Woodmont in 2015

by Clay Stauffer
Life groups should try to incorporate these things: Prayer, Spiritual Growth,
Fellowship, and Mission. Not every group will have all four but this is the
goal. We are now looking for courageous leaders who are willing to recruit
and facilitate these groups. Please let Mary Clare Pyron or me know if you are
willing to head up one of these. The commitment is roughly six months. Small
group ministry at any church is completely dependent on having committed,
proactive leaders, and that is what we are now looking for in 2015.
3. WORSHIP Worship is essential to what we do as a community. At
Woodmont, we offer three distinct worship styles: Relaxed worship at 9:30,
Traditional Worship at 11:00, and Contemporary Worship at 5:15. Emerson
once said human beings are hard wired to worship and if we dont worship
God we will find something else to worship money, social status, power,
possessions, ourselves, you name it. This year, we are going to take a hard
look at our worship services, what we are currently offering, and what we
hope to offer in the future. Our 9:30 service is often over-crowded and we
must address this and the logistics of it. We want everybody at Woodmont
to find a worship style that is meaningful and commit to it on a regular
basis. Our leadership is continuing to wrestle with our worship schedule
and how we can maximize it in the future.
There will be more said about these three focus areas but I wanted to
communicate them and ask for your prayers and support in helping us grow
in each of them. Please let us know if you want to recruit and lead a life
group. It will greatly enhance your faith and spiritual life.
Blessings,

We are off and running in 2015. Every January

at Woodmont, we identify three AREAS OF
FOCUS for the New Year. I want to say a word
about each of these.
1. BEING MISSIONAL This past fall we started
to emphasize what it means to be a missional
church. Our Elders have been reading Reggie
McNeals book Missional Renaissance. Being
Missional involves much more than just having
mission and outreach ministries (which we
certainly do). It is a fundamental way of viewing the church and its role
in the world. The church is not just a place or a building. Its not just
somewhere we go to gather. The church is a body of believers united by
Christ sent to change and transform the world with Christs love. The church
is called to be externally focused and not just internally focused. The church
is called to develop disciples and not just programs. We are called to be
the church not just on Sundays but everywhere where we live, work, and
interact with others. Being missional is a way of living and being. It is a
mindset. Jesus said, As the father has sent me, so I send you. (John 20:21)
Our first Missional Wednesday dinner is this week, Jan 7th, focusing on
our amazing ministry in Guatemala which involves sponsorships, building
houses, and another trip planned for October 10-17th 2015. Let us keep
wrestling with and talking about new ways for us to be a missional church.
2. LIFE GROUPS We have some amazing small groups at Woodmont that
span all ages and all walks of life. We want to build on this by starting a
number of LIFE GROUPS. Life groups will consist of 6-12 people who get
together either weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly to experience life together.

WCPS Construction Underway!

by Clay Stauffer
Johnson, Clayton and Michelle McWhorter, John and Sandra Carpenter,
David and Karen Conrad, Brian and Christy Waller, and Tate and Nora Rich.
The Preschool has also raised significant funds over the past few years
through fundraising events like Carnival and Auction. John and Joan Rich
hosted the last two auctions at their house on Love Circle, both of which
were very successful. If you would like to donate a brick paver in honor or
memory of a loved one to be included in the new entrance, its still not too
late. They are $100 and will help this project. Please contact Sheila Mathias
(smathias@woodmontcc.org) in the Preschool office. We are very excited
about this significant facility upgrade which will help keep our preschool
one of the best in Nashville. Here is a rendering of what the outside will
look like when complete.

Woodmont Christian Preschool has been a vital part of our church for
decades. Over the years it has brought numerous families into the life of
our congregation and continues to do that today. As a preschool parent, I
can tell you that these children are being shaped and molded for life every
day at our church. We have a phenomenal new Director Martha Duff,
who has a great vision for the future of the school. The reality is we have
neglected our facility for many years while other schools in town have
remodeled and updated theirs. This makes it hard to stay competitive. Part
of the Strategic Planning process last year was a clear realization that we
had to do something about this and quickly, so we did! We have now raised
close to $650,000 for this project. Construction started in December and will
run through the spring. I want to thank the following people for making
significant lead contributions to this important effort: Milton and Denise

A Modest Proposal

by Thom Schuyler
Here is a link to the BibleGateway Reading Plans website: www.
biblegateway.com/reading-plans. For those that accept this invitation, here
are a few personal tips from a fellow traveler whose lips move when he reads:
Although Bible Gateway can/will send you an email with the daily text,
Id suggest using an actual Bible.
Have a highlighter handy to identify passages that lift your spirits.
Have a highlighter handy to identify passages that dont make sense.
If/when you miss a day or two (or more) dont get bogged down in
trying to catch up - just jump back in on the reading for the day.
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any twoedged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and
spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts
and intentions of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12
Happy New Year!
xo - Thom

I am writing this at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday,

December 31, 2014. You are probably reading this
almost a week later and that has some bearing on
the proposal I am making. About 30 minutes ago
I read Malachi chapters 1 - 4 and Revelation 22,
thus completing a resolution I made a year ago:
reading The Bible through in 2014. This time I was
successful; many other attempts in the past have
ended prematurely.
Well, Im determined to do this again in
2015 and Im floating this invitation to all of you to join me. No pressure,
of courseI wont be calling you with questions or quizzes about kings or
covenants or prophecies.
Should you choose to proceed Id suggest you follow a pre-designed
Reading Plan. The website www.BibleGateway.com is an excellent resource
- but only one of many. Although BG lists about a dozen plans I humbly
suggest choosing the Old/New Testament design which offers a bit of both
on a daily basis. (Note: I tried the Chronological Plan a few years ago and
Jesus didnt enter the picture until October. That was tedious).

Love Rescue Me

by Andra Moran
clenching her hand, her blue eyes wide. Dear God, I want to pray for Clare. I
pray that she never gets lost in the woods or skins her knee. The end.
Maybe this is what Paul was talking about when he wrote the letter to the
Thessalonians. May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each
other, and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.
In that circle, love was overflowing. Diana was offering up her most earnest
prayer that Clare be safe and happy. Each week, the love increased among the
children and the adults who were blessed to be with them. Our hearts were
strengthened and encouraged to be brave and bold, to share the love wed
discovered in our midst.
These are topsy-turvy times in our world. My prayer is that we will be
encouraged as we leave the Advent season and journey toward Epiphany;
that we can watch for hope with the return of Christ; that we actively work
together for peace; that we be strengthened by love to be loving to those
around us. Lost ways and skinned knees happen, but so do miracles.
I dont know about you, but most miracles Ive seen are the direct result of
a love overflow. Christmas, for example.

For five years before I came to Woodmont, I

had the joy of being the Childrens Music Director
at Vine Street Christian Church. The childrens
choir met on Wednesday nights, usually about 25
of us, all different. The smallest were four years
old. Miss Julia, the church organist, who has
seen it all before, and can usually tell you how it
will pan out, is more than 15 times that. We were
bound together by a love for music, but more than
that, we were bound by a love for each other.
At the end of each childrens choir rehearsal that first school year we were
together, I gathered us in a circle and asked for us to pray for the person next
to us by their name. In our first few rehearsals, the prayers were awkward:
I pray for JP, that he doesnt beat up his sister because shes nicer than he is
anyway, followed by some giggles and an indignant growl.
It didnt take long.
Three weeks into the school year, something changed. The pace of our
circle prayers slowed. Maybe it was because of Diana, one of the blonde,
curly-mopped twins who are the youngest among us. She sat next to Clare,

HELP NEEDED FOR ROOM IN THE INN ON

1/23, 1/30, 3/20 AND 3/27

CLOTHING NEEDED FOR ROOM IN THE INN

Room In The Inn has opportunities for you to serve locally for one night
in mission. We need two dinner hosts on January 23. We also need two
overnight hosts (couples often serve together) on January 30, March
20 and March 27. Top of the line air mattresses and individual private
spaces with locked doors are provided for hosts. After supper, you may
relax at South Hall (please stay at South Hall). Contact Christine Reed to
sign up at contactingchristine@gmail.com or 615.794.1054.

Happy New Year from your Room in the Inn team! As we start off 2015 please
consider making a clothing donation to the RITI closet. As winter gets colder, we are
opening the Woodmont doors extra nights during the week and have more guests
in need of warm clothing. We always have a need for boxers, gloves, scarves, long
underwear, coats, and jeans. Large and XL are the most requested sizes but we are
seeing more men that need size 2XL and larger.
If you dont have time to go shopping you can always donate a Walmart gift card so
we can shop for these items. Our guests appreciate every bit of kindness and often
say "Woodmont is known for its generosity!" Please dont forget that you can donate
other items year round to our Thriftsmart donation bin in the parking lot by South
Hall (ex: women/kids clothing, mens professional attire, housewares, linens, books,
etc.) Thriftsmart empties the bin every week and gives us a small percentage to use
to shop for the closet at their store. Thanks again to everyone for your support and
willingness to show Christs love to our guests through the cold winter!

The printed version of the 2015 Woodmont Directory is currently in production and will be available soon! This volume, created cover to cover here at
Woodmont, contains over 65 pages and is printed in full color! Families or individuals pictured in the directory will receive one free copy. Additional
copies are available to all for $3.00 each. Information on dates of distribution coming soon.
