EQUIPMENT BUSINESS UNIT MANAGER

2000 Series
Achieves
Certification to
UL/CSA
Magnaflux equipment is designed with safety in
mind. We use good engineering standards in
our design and monitor the pertinent codes and
specifications when updating our equipment.
The result is a state-of-the-art machine, focused
on meeting process requirements, ergonomic
needs, and electrical codes.
We always strive to follow the National
Electrical Code (NEC) and NFPA 79 (National
Fire Protection Association Code for Industrial
Machinery), but we have never gone after the
Holy Grail; certification from Underwriters
Laboratory (UL). We have flirted with UL and
their sister from Canada (CSA), but never ourselves obtained a listing. We assisted customers if
it was a local requirement, and we worked with
our Canadian Service Center to modify the
machines we delivered up north. Modifications
were done on an individual basis and in
many cases we found
the judgment/interpretation of individual
inspectors varied. There
was nothing wrong with
the varied interpretations,
we understood why the modifications were requested,
and we knew how complicated the standards can
become. We learned, we
evolved, and we changed
the machines.

Now Available:
Option to Upgrade to
UL/CSA Certification
The result is a better machine all the way around.
We can now certify any of our 2000 series
machines to meet UL Std 61010-1, or CSA std
C22.2 no. 61010-1. There is a real cost associated
with certification; additional modifications, testing, and labeling are required. Since this is not a
common requirement we do not feel everyone
should pay. So we offer a new optional upgrade for
our standard MPI 2000 series units. The choice to
upgrade allows us to place a label on the machine
certifying that an outside body has reviewed, audited, and tested our machines to their limits. The
outside body (with the recommended additions)
certifies our unit is safe and meets the UL/CSA
standard.
We now control how the unit is modified; we
avoid modifications in the field; and we have a
more consistent interpretation of the requirements.
It was no easy task to obtain this status, just as it
will be no easy task to maintain the certification. I
think the most interesting thing we learned is just
how durable our machines are. As part of the certification process we pushed the
machines harder, longer, and farther then we have ever done
before. The tests strengthened
our confidence. We did not
reach the limits. Trust me, if
you witnessed the tests you
would have been nervous during
the process, and impressed with
the results. Ask your local
Regional Sales Manager or
Representative for your new
equipment to be certified to
UL/CSA. For more information

Aqueous Cleaner Chemistry

Cleaning as a process is often taken for granted. Whether we are
talking about removing soot from critical engine components, or
wiping down a body panel for painting, how well we clean is often
the most important part of a process. But often times, little thought
is dedicated to cleaning correctly.
With aqueous cleaning, there is no perfect cleaning solution.
In all cases, there is a balance that needs to be struck between performance, environmental, and economic issues. Add to that the
sheer breadth and variety of cleaning techniques and equipment, and
finding the best answer to your cleaning problem seems impossible.
Often, the single most important factor in finding the right aqueous cleaner is whether or not the process is governed by Aerospace
specifications. If so, then only spec-compliant cleaners need to be considered. To assist with finding the cleaners that fit your needs, we have
compiled a quick-reference chart listing each Daraclean formula that is
aerospace spec-compliant and the specification numbers.
On the other hand, just because your process is not subject to
Aerospace specifications does not mean you cannot use a cleaner
that is Aerospace compliant. Spec-compliant cleaners often have
the best corrosion resistance and tolerance available, but they also
come at a premium price. Using a non-spec-compliant cleaner can
often mean a significant difference in chemical costs, since extensive third-party corrosion testing is not needed.
In either case, care should still be exercised to match the correct
chemistry to the application, not just finding the lowest price available. When comparing different formulas, it helps to have some basic
knowledge of the chemistry of cleaning to find the right solution. In
general, all aqueous cleaners are composed of water with various
chemicals added to enhance the cleaning ability of the solution.
Here are the basic types of chemicals used in aqueous cleaners:

SOAPS

AND

SURFACTANTS

As everyone knows, soaps and surfactants are the most common

cleaning agents used with water. Surfactants act as an intermediate
agent between water and soil, making oils coalesce and lift off surfaces and stabilizing particles in the cleaner. Soaps and surfactants
also tend to form foams. In some cases, this is beneficial to the cleaning processfoam can assist with penetrating hard-to-reach areas of
a part, or getting into constrained part geometries. But in other
cases, foam can be bad, particularly in spray washers or automated
conveyor systems. In these cases, a low-foam cleaner is preferred to
keep the process running and in control. The proper foam level for a
cleaner is dictated by the cleaning method and equipment. Most
Daraclean formulas can be used in any application and equipment.
Some simply work better in certain situations than others.
For immersion applications,
cleaners with higher foam levels
generally work better. Immersion
applications are the simplest
using a tank of cleaning solution
and submersing the parts to be
cleaned. Agitated systems, recirculating tanks, and ultrasonic tanks
all fall under the category of
Immersion.

by David Geis
DARACLEAN PRODUCT MANAGER
For spray applications, cleaners with lower foam levels generally work better. This follows from common sense; in a highly agitated system, a foaming cleaner will quickly build up too much foam,
and the process will stop working. Some low-foam cleaners are formulated with low levels of surfactant, while others are blended with
an anti-foam agent to control the formation of foam.
PH AND

ALKALINITY

The pH scale is a measure of how acidic or alkaline a water solution

is. Under typical conditions, acids will etch and corrode metal. For
that reason, most water-based cleaners are either neutral or alkaline
in nature. Stronger cleaners will have higher pH and alkalinity levels, meaning they have a greater amount of chemistry to break
down and remove soils.
However, not all metals will react in the same way. While
some metals like steel may be tolerant to high pH levels, other metals such as aluminum or zinc are not. Daraclean has formulations at
four different pH levelsNeutral, Alkaline, High Alkaline, and
Causticto provide a range of options for each application. Often,
there is a balance that needs to be struck between removing soils
quickly and leaving part surfaces bright and undamaged.
Two key alkaline builders used in aqueous cleaners are silicates and phosphates. Silicates provide reserve alkaline power for
cleaning, and also work to protect surfaces from corrosion. By using
silicates, aggressive pH levels can be used on softer metals, such as
aluminum. When using a silicated cleaner, though, special care
should be taken to fully rinse parts before allowing them to dry.
Otherwise, a thin white film can develop on part surfaces.
Phosphates have a similar trade-off. While phosphate cleaners have
excellent detergent action, able to clean carbonized soils and tars,
phosphates will react with yellow metals. In some areas, phosphates
are also subject to disposal regulations.

ADDITIVES

AND INHIBITORS

In addition to the basic ingredients of surfactants and alkaline

chemicals, most industrial cleaners will have a variety of additives
and inhibitors. These components play a variety of roles, and fall
into a few basic categories.
Corrosion inhibitors are the largest class of additives. These
compounds protect metal surfaces from corrosion by the water and
chemicals in the cleaning solution, and may leave a monomolecular
film to provide longer-term protection. Chelation agents are chemicals that trap hard water ions and metal ions, preventing them from
interfering with the cleaner chemistry. Rinse aids lower the surface
tension of the cleaner to help it sheet off the clean surface instead
of beading up into droplets. Dyes and fragrances are also used to
provide more pleasing conditions for operators.
Each individual application has its own unique requirements.
Thats why we have so many different Daraclean formulationsto
meet everyones individual cleaning needs. We would be happy to
discuss your application with you and help you find the best solution for your cleaning needs.

The Y-6 Yoke with AC Magnetization

Utilizing an Alternating Current (AC) magnetic field, the
Magnaflux Y-6 portable yoke is ideal for detecting cracks and flaws
which are open to the surface of the piece under inspection. With
its adjustable legs, the Y-6 can be set up to fit almost any object,
and with its AC magnetic field, it is particularly effective in testing
for surface cracks in thick or irregular items such as unfinished
castings or forgings. The Y-6 can also be used to demagnetize parts.
The Y-6 has an ergonomic design, reducing user fatigue for
the highest productivity and testing accuracy. The power switch is
located on the bottom, where it is easy and natural to reach, and
the yoke itself is the lightest in its class.

The Y-7 Yoke with AC and/ or DC

Magnetization
The Magnaflux Y-7 portable yoke has all the features of the Y-6,
with one important addition: It is capable of testing with a pulsed
Direct Current (DC) magnetic field. DC magnetic field testing
penetrates the workpiece, thereby detecting defects which are
located just below the surface. Surface defects are also detected.
The Y-7 provides complete AC magnetic field testing as
well, for great versatility in the inspection of all types of ferromagnetic items. The Y-7 can also be used to demagnetize parts.

We now have a slim line yoke light available for our Y-6 and Y-7
yokes. It fits easily on the leg of our magnetic particle yokes and
illuminates the inspection area. The light works in AC mode
when the yoke is activated. It allows the inspector to use the
yoke in a darkened area.
The light meets and exceeds ASTM-E-1444 specifications for
visible light (minimum 100 ft. candles in area between the legs of
the yoke, when yoke is in direct contact with part.)
