PREREQUISITE: SDS 211

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is the first course in Clinical Removable Prosthodontics. It consists of
didactic, clinical, and laboratory components. The course is limited to the teaching of
conventionalcompleteandRemovablePartialDentures.
The didac c component is delivered in 30 lectures. It covers the theore cal
backgroundfordifferentphasesoftreatmentwithRemovablePartialandCompleteDentures.
Syllabusincludesdiagnosis,treatmentplanning,treatmentprocedures,andfollowupofthe
treatment. Lectures focus on the basic concepts, principles, indications, and limitations of
theseclinicalprocedures.
Theclinicalcomponentcomprisesof30sessionsheldforoneacademicyear(oncea
week),utilizedtopracticecommonclinicalproceduresforpatientsexamination,motivation,
andtreatmentwithcompleteandremovablepartialdentures.
During laboratory sessions (held once a week), students are instructed to do all the
laboratoryworkrequiredforRPDandCDfabricationfortheirclinicalcases,withtheexception
of"frameworkfabrication",andprocessingofacrylicdentures.Thesestepswillbedoneby
thecentrallaboratorypersonnel.
COURSE CREDIT: 6 Credit Hours
2CreditHoursTheore cal=onehourlectureweeklyfortwosemesters
2CreditHoursClinical=threehoursweeklyfortwosemesters
2CreditHoursPractical=threehoursweeklyfortwosemesters
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To familiarize the student with clinical management of edentulous and partially
edentulouspatients,throughteachingbasicclinicalproceduresandtheirintegrationwiththe
procedurestaughtinthepreclinicalcourseSDS211.
1

At the completion of the course, the student should be competent in the basic
scientific knowledge pertaining to the treatment of edentulous and partially edentulous
patients; skilled in all laboratory procedures used in the construction of conventional
complete and removable partial dentures; and proficient in the clinical management of
uncomplicatedcasesrequiringcompleteandremovablepartialdentures.

COURSE METHODOLOGY:
1. DIDACTIC:

A weekly lecture for one academic year covers the fundamental

principlesofRemovablePartialandCompleteDentureconstruction.

2. CLINICAL:

One weekly session where the student will be given demonstrations

bythefaculty,followedbypracticeoftheseclinicalproceduresbythe
studentsonpatients.

3. LABORATORY:

Thelaboratorysessionshavebeenstructuredasfollows:

a. StudentsarerequiredtocarryoutalllaboratoryproceduresfortheCompleteand
Removable Partial Denture construction following their clinical sessions every
week;exceptRPDframeworkcastingandprocessingofremovabledentures.
b. At the end of each lab session, the students should submit the completed
laboratoryprocedureoftheirclinicalcasestohisinstructorforgrading.Students
willbegradedforthequalityofthelaboratoryandclinicalproceduresperformed
andfortheircompletionontime.
i) Students will be provided with a model of Class III set up, in addition to a
lecture and they will then perform the arrangement of teeth for complete
denturesinClassIIIjawrelationontheirown.Theinstructorsmayonlyguide
thestudentsduringthesetup.
ii) Students will practice the designing of the RPD on their own and submit the
worktotheirinstructorsforassessment.
COURSE EVALUATION:
i) Minimum requirements to pass this Course are to fabricate prostheses for:
1. Twopartiallyedentulousarches.Singleshortedentulousspacesarenotaccepted.
