To HR:
I am pleased to be able to submit my resume for consideration for jobs involving business
sustainability and sustainability management. I have worked in the field of sustainability, in one form
or another, my entire working career. As a biologist by training, I have a passion for all living things as
well as the planet that supports them. As a father, husband, and member of my community, my
concern is maintaining an environment that allows all people to lead healthy, productive, and happy
lives.
In the area of sustainability management I have worked to improve the environmental, social, and
economic aspects of products and associated supply chains. My work includes the reporting of
carbon, energy, water, and waste to both regulatory and voluntary programs, evaluation of resource
sustainability, energy efficiency, packaging, and distribution through the use of sustainability metric s
and life cycle assessments. I also led the effort to set up a team that is the exclusive scoring team of
the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) which scores the submissions of thousands of participating
companies.
Over the years I have filled a variety of other roles from developing products with environmental
benefits, to measuring the environmental benefits of products, developing and reviewing compliant
green claims for products, actively working with procurement managers seeking environmentally
preferable products, and reporting corporate sustainability accomplishments. I have also participated
in a number of industry, trade, technical, and government committees defining what makes
something green or EPP and what processes are needed to verify the accuracy of environmental
and sustainability claims.
All of the work mentioned above is based on a solid technical foundation. I am trained in Life Cycle
Assessment or LCA by the late Dr. Ian Boustead, one of the foremost LCA practitioners of his time
(considered the father of LCA). I have applied the processes and thinking of LCA to numerous
projects and programs to better understand the specific environmental benefits of processes and
products. For example, I applied LCA to improve the environmental metrics of the sports stadium
built in Sydney for the 2000 Olympic Games. I have also applied LCA thinking and practices to
develop evaluation systems, product certification standards, and the requirements for eco-labeling. I
was part of the team that developed the standards for the first Type III Eco-Label under ISO14044.
I am also a practiced and polished communicator. I have presented technical studies, sustainability
projects, and conference papers to both national and international audiences internationally. I have
also been interviewed as an expert on sustainability for radio, television and print.
I trust you will find my abilities nicely match the needs of firms seeking true sustainability
professionals.
Sincerely,
Chet Chaffee, Ph.D.
