JesusoftenspokeinparablesthathadhiddenmeaningsasisthecasewiththePhariseeand
thePublican(oftenreferredtoasthetaxpayer).Aftertellinghisparableshewouldtellhis
disciples(theapostles),inprivate,thetruemeaningoftheparable.InLukechapter18the
parableofthePhariseeandthePublicanclearlydemonstratestheLordsdisdainforself
righteousness.AtthebeginningofthechapterwefindthatJesusencouragesthepeopleto
prayandbestrong,nottoloseheart.
Jesusencouragesthepeople
Jesustoldthepeoplethatmenshouldalwaysprayandnotfaint,fromtheVinesdictionaryof
NTwords,pg.400wefindthewordfaintisEnkakeowhichmeanstoloseheart,tohavea
lackofcourage.
Andhespakeaparableuntothemtothisend,thatmenoughtalwaystopray,andnot
tofaintLuke18:1
GodhearsthecryofHispeople
JesusmadeitclearwithhisexampleoftheunjustjudgeandthewidowthatGoddoeshear
us,isprotectiveoverus,andwillavengeus.
Saying,Therewasinacityajudge,whichfearednotGod,neitherregardedman:
Luke18:2
Andtherewasawidowinthatcityandshecameuntohim,saying,Avengemeof
mineadversary.Luke18:3
Andhewouldnotforawhile:butafterwardhesaidwithinhimself,ThoughIfearnot
God,norregardmanLuke18:4
Yetbecausethiswidowtroublethme,Iwillavengeher,lestbyhercontinualcoming
shewearyme.Luke18:5
AndtheLordsaid,Hearwhattheunjustjudgesaith.Luke18:6
AndshallnotGodavengehisownelect,whichcrydayandnightuntohim,thoughhe
bearlongwiththem?Luke18:7
Itellyouthathewillavengethemspeedily.NeverthelesswhentheSonofmancometh,shall
hefindfaithontheearth?Luke18:8
Thereweretwomenwhowentintothetempletopray.OnewasaPharisee(priest)andthe
otherapublican(taxpayer).Onemanwasrighteousandonemanwasselfrighteous,thereis
adistinctdifferencebetweenthetwo.

 Andhespakethisparableuntocertainwhichtrustedinthemselvesthattheywere
righteous,anddespisedothers:Luke18:9

TwomenwentupintothetempletopraytheoneaPharisee,andtheothera
publican.Luke18:10
ThePharisee'sprayerwasfullofconceitandselfrighteousness,ashespokehisprayeras
thoughheknewotherswerelistening,orifhedidnothewassoselfrighteousthathecould
notseethathisprayerwashatefulanddisdainful,becauseheactuallyplacedhimselfhigher
thanthepublican,evengoingsofarastoinsultthepublicanwhowasalsoprayingthere
besidehim.HedidthankGodbutinsodoingheinsultedthepublicanandsinnersbecause
heexaltedhimselfbyimplyingthatheisabetterpersonthanthepublican,extortioners,
unjust,andadulterers.
ThePhariseestoodandprayedthuswithhimself,God,Ithankthee,thatIamnotas
othermenare,extortioners,unjust,adulterers,orevenasthispublican.Luke18:11
Thepublicanwashumbleduringhisprayer,beatinghischestandaskingGodtobemerciful
tohimbecausehewasasinner.HewasunconcernedwiththePhariseesselfrighteous
prayerbecausehe(thepublican)wasprayinginearnestinarighteousprayertoGod.
Thepublican'sprayerwasverydifferentfromthePharisee'sbecausehewasnotconcerned
withmaterialthingsofthisearth,ofbeingbetterthananyoneelse,hisonlyconcernwasto
pleadwithGodtobemercifultohimbecauseadmittedlyhewasasinner,asweallare.
Andthepublicanstandingafaroff,wouldnotliftupsomuchashiseyesuntoheave,
butsmoteuponhisbreast,sayingGodbemercifultomeasinner.Luke18:13

JesusTellsWhichMansPrayerisJustified
Jesusclearlystatesthatthepublicanwouldbejustifiedratherthanthephariseebecause
everyonethatputshimselfhigherthanotherswillbeabased(broughtdown)andeveryone
whohumblesthemselvesbeforeGodwillbeexalted(broughtup).
Itellyou,thismanwentdowntohishousejustifiedratherthantheother:foreveryone
thatexaltethhimselfshallbeabasedandhethathumblethhimselfshallbeexalted.

ThemeaningoftheparableofThePhariseeandthePublicanisclear:Whoeverputs
themselveshigherthansomeoneelsewillbebroughtdownandwhoeverhumbles
themselveswillberaisedupintheeyesofGodWearenottoholdourselvesinsuchhigh
esteemthatwethinkwearebetterthanother's.
Itellyou,thismanwentdowntohishousejustifiedratherthantheother:foreveryone
thatexaltethhimselfshallbeabasedandhethathumblethhimselfshallbeexalted.
