Rumors of Potential
Sale of DuPonts Paint
Business Intensify

ccording to several industrial sources and mainstream media outlets,

U.S.-based chemical maker DuPont has launched the preliminary sale
process of its car paints business, which is anticipated to bring in more
than $4 billion.
Reuters reported the companys adviser on the agreement, Credit Suisse
Group had sent nancial resources connected to the unit sale to concerned
clients and the potential sale is also expected to draw interest from several
chemical companies.
DuPonts coatings business reported sales of $1.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011.
The primary customers of DuPont include Maaco and other auto paint renishers while Ford Motor and General Motors are also key customers.
DuPont could sell just the OEM component, keeping the more lucrative
paint renishing business.
The performance coatings operations contributed about 12 percent of the
companys $31.5 billion revenue last year and 5.1 percent of operating income.
Coatings for renishing vehicles accounted for almost $1.7 billion of sales
last year, new car coatings totaled $1.2 billion and sales of powder and liquid
coatings were about $950 million.
While reporting better-than-expected rst quarter results, U.S. paint major
Valspar said it is not in the race to bid for the DuPont paint business. Gary
Hendrickson, chief executive of Minneapolis-based Valspar, said the DuPont
unit was a little too big a bite for us.
Other large paint manufacturers, such as AkzoNobel, along with privateequity rms are seen as potential buyers for the business unit.
Hendrickson said the company still faced a sluggish U.S. housing market as
well as other demand challenges, notably in Europe and China.
He said the Chinese market is expected to pick up in the second half of the
year after a at performance in the latest quarter, and Valspar also sees costs for
raw materials such as the titanium dioxide used to whiten paint rising by midsingle digits this year.
Valspar reported prot of $55.8 million for the quarter to compared with
$33.4 million a year earlier.

manufacturing, heat transfer technology
and engineering and design services, announced plans for its coil corrosion protection coatings expansion into Mexico.
ElectroFin E-coat is recognized internationally by HVAC/R equipment manufacturers
as the best corrosion protection for n-tube
and micro-channel heat exchangers in
coastal environments said the company.
Luvatas HVAC/R coil corrosion protection coatings include both factory-applied ElectroFin E-coat and spray-applied
Insitu, which retain the operating efciency of units longer while reducing
maintenance, replacement and operating
costs, ultimately extending the length of
service of HVAC&R systems. Luvata is
now bringing both coil coating options
closer to the growing community of
HVAC manufacturers in the Monterrey,
Mexico area.
With our customer base growing in
Mexico, its important that we continue to
grow with them, said Luvata CEO John
Peter Leesi. This expansion helps us and
our customers save on energy, freight and
logistic costs, while opening up capacity
for Luvata in the United States.
Although the exact location of the facility has not been decided, plans include
a 50,000 to 60,000 square foot building
to serve HVAC/R manufacturers in the
Monterrey area. Targeting to be fully operational by the first quarter of 2013,
Luvata estimates 40 to 50 employees
will be needed for operating the facility
at full capacity.
The new facility in Mexico, joins Luvatas two other full service coil-coating

International Paints products

pass key tests
International Paint said its principal anticorrosive primers and shop primers have
successfully passed the very demanding
IMO PSPC COT laboratory tests in accordance with the IMO MSC.288 (87)
SOLAS regulations for cargo oil tankers.
These regulations, approved at
MSC87 in May 2010, become effective
for new cargo oil tankers from January
1, 2013 under the International Maritime Organisations Performance Standard for Protective Coatings of Cargo
Oil Tanks (IMO PSPC COT). Similar to
the requirements of the IMO PSPC for
sea water ballast tanks, these regulations
are designed to ensure the longevity of
cargo oil tanks and stipulate that applied
coatings must remain in good condition
for a minimum of 15 years, as defined by
the International Association of Classification Societies.
For a cargo oil tank coating to comply, all coatings must be tested by Class
Society approved testing facilities and
have a Class Society Type Approval Certificate (TAC). The award of a TAC
means the product has demonstrated the
expected in service performance, the
quality of the supplied material is assured
and the product supply location has met
regulatory requirements.
The successful International Paint
products passing laboratory tests include
products from the Interbond, Intergard,
Interplate and Intershield product ranges.
Approved laboratories carrying out the
testing include COT bv based in the
Netherlands. COT bv was the rst laboratory in the world with specic Lloyds
Register approval to carry out testing in
accordance with the IMO MSC.288 (87)
regulations for Cargo Oil Tankers.

Daubert Chemical develops

new coating for bus company
With the help of Dauber Chemical,
Collins Bus Corporation of Hutchinson,
Kan., recently implemented LEAN manufacturing principals. Daubert contributed
improved product performance, improved
packaging and reduced downtime.
On peak days, Collins Bus used multiple 55-gallon drums of undercoating per
day said the company. The problem was
the company was experiencing excessive
overspray of its undercoating. The overspray drifted into the plant creating a hazard for plant personnel. Whats more, the
overspray fell onto nished buses, causing
additional clean-up and thus additional
production delays.
In addition to these issues, the 55-gallon drums, installed in the spray booth,
caused further production delays, because when a drum emptied, spray operations had to stop until another drum
could be installed. This took a half-hour
or more out of production for each
changeover to a new drum.
Daubert took a proactive role in helping Collins Bus achieve its objectives by
rst examining how it could solve the
overspray situation. The result was a reformulation of the undercoating which
became Tectyl 6430, a water-based asphaltic coating with a chemical additive
that reduces product drag, offers greater
atomization at the spray gun tip and thus
reduces the overspray of the product.
12 | Coatings World

The new product was formulated at a

lower viscosity allowing the use of drums
or 330-gallon totes for packaging.
These and other modications saved up
to one and a half hours of downtime per
day in changeovers, eliminated the complications of clean up due to the previous
overspray problems, and improved plant
safety. In fact, in December 2010, the company was recognized as a national model
for workplace safety and health by the
Kansas Department of Labor and OSHA.

New Bayer waterborne

polyurethane technology
provides fresh coatings for
hospital facility managers
Bayer MaterialScience LLC scientists have
developed a waterborne polyurethane

coatings technology for healthcare facilities that offers hospital facility managers a
durable coating low in VOCs, is resistant
to harsh cleaners and disinfectants.
The Centers for Disease Control and
the Joint Commission on Accreditation
of Healthcare Organizations issued
stricter guidelines for the safe operation
of healthcare facilities requiring areas
with higher contamination risk, such as
emergency, operating and procedure
rooms, to be cleaned more often and
with harsher cleaners. Due to these revised protocols, hospital facility managers and architects are limited in their
design palette when considering traditional acrylic latex wall paints. Bayers
new coatings technology addresses the
tougher requirements while maintaining

AkzoNobel forms partnership with The University of Manchester

AkzoNobel has formed a partnership with the Corrosion and Protection Centre (CPC) at
The University of Manchester (UoM), to strengthen its ability to deliver corrosion protection solutions.
The ve-year partnership between the world's largest manufacturer of corrosion protection coatings and the world's largest academic unit dedicated to the study of corrosion is due
to commence in April 2012. This will allow for work to be undertaken to help tackle the annual $2.2 trillion (1.39 trillion) global annual cost of corrosion, accounting for over three
percent of the worlds GDP.
Key features of the agreement will include:
The appointment of Professor Stuart Lyon as the AkzoNobel Professor of Corrosion Control, based in the School of Materials, to oversee an agreed research program to be supported by research staff within UoM;
Directly employing several post-doctoral researchers and PhD students to work on projects with active AkzoNobel technical involvement; and
Allowing AkzoNobel access to the sophisticated and state-of-the-art specialist measurement
equipment and techniques developed by the CPC, as well as consultancy and training.
With annual sales of more than 1.5 billion in the eld, AkzoNobel has leading positions
in the supply of corrosion inhibition coatings and specialty chemicals to the transport, oileld
and construction markets.
The partnership will allow the CPC to extend its knowledge about the mechanisms of corrosion formation, as well as enhance its ability to explore the underpinning science and to develop technology platforms for its prevention.
It is anticipated that the partnership will gear AkzoNobel's capabilities and resources by
attracting additional funding from external sources as well as strengthening relationships with
key customers, many of whom already collaborate with the CPC.
The research will address a number of key challenges including:
What causes some paints to prevent corrosion and others to fail?
What are the coating-substrate interactions which prevent corrosion?
How to predict the lifetime of coatings; and
How can corrosion be detected before it is visible?

other desirable qualities as well

said the company.
Hospital facility owners, architects and consultants shared three
main attributes for hospital wall coatings:
low odor, durability and price. The Bayer
scientists tested several architectural waterborne acrylic latex wall paints, two-component waterborne polyurethane resin
systems and waterborne epoxy coatings.
The coatings were applied to wallboard
panels primed with a standard wall primer,
coated with the test materials and aged for
seven days to eliminate the effects of cure
time. After the aging, several tests were performed to ensure the desirable attributes
were achieved.
Testing revealed that the use of the new
waterborne polyurethane technology allows hospital administrators to reduce the
number of repeat painting cycles. It also
makes it possible to achieve a low-gloss or
matte nish, which is sought after in healthcare facilities, without sacricing durability.

Drr to build sustainable

automotive paint shop in
China for FAW-VW
Drr has been contracted to build an automobile paint shop in China for the FAW-VW
joint venture. This automotive paint shop
which Drr says will have the lowest emissions in all China and a capacity of 34 vehicles per hour will go into operation to paint
various Audi models starting in March 2013.
The plant will have completely automated primer, base and top coat application and has expanded the joint ventures
capacities in Changchun.
Drr is responsible for the construction of the complete paint shop, including
application technology and exhaust air
purication. The company will use its
EcoDryScrubber system for the dry separation of overspray that it says reduces enwww.coatingsworld.com

ergy consumption up to 60 percent in

comparison to conventional spray booths
by using air recirculation. Fresh water and
coagulation chemicals can be completely
dispensed with and overspray bound by
limestone powder can be reused.
The use of water-based paints in the
primer and basecoat section is also new
and environmentally friendly as well.
The Ecopaint RoDip M rotational dip
coating process, which is already used
around the world in 46 different paint
shops for PT / ED applications, will be
used in pretreatment and electro dipping
in Changchun. With this Drr said the rotation of the entire body in the tank optimizes the dipping, ooding and draining
process. By eliminating the entry and exit
ramps the tank volume is decreased, reducing the need for energy and chemicals.
Prior to the ller and basecoat applications, the car body is cleaned by six
EcoRS Clean robots and sword brushes.

population energy needs. Our thermal insulation coatings are being used to insulate equipment to reduce heat loss and
increase energy efciency in existing nuclear facilities.
Additionally, there is a need for lead
abatement in facilities that are being decommissioned, said Crolley. Nansulate
coatings provide cost effective thermal insulation properties that stand up well to extreme environments, as well as the ability
to easily encapsulate lead contaminated
surfaces for environmental remediation. We
have already begun initial projects in the
U.S. with facilities using our nanotechnology-based products. Power generation facilities, including nuclear, coal, oil and gas,
wind, wave, and solar will continue to be a
market focus of ours this year to expand
the foot print of sustainable nanotechnology and the benets it can offer for energy
efcient power generation.
The U.S. Department of Energy estimates the world commercial nuclear generating gross capacity could increase
from 2005 levels by 35 percent in 2015
and by 70 percent in 2030 (U.S. Department of Energy, 2006.). Of approximately 439 nuclear power plants that
currently operate in thirty countries, the
United States, France and Japan operate
about half. Currently, an additional 33
plants are in the process of being constructed with another 94 planned, and
222 proposed by countries ranging from
China to South Africa, according to a
2008 report by The Wharton School,
University of Pennsylvania.

International Paint offers a choice of

silyl and copper acrylate technologies

VLCC coated with Intersmooth 7465Si SPC.

18 | Coatings World

International Paint has introduced Intersmooth 7465Si SPC and Interswift 6900Si
silyl acrylate antifouling coatings.
Aiming to improve and enhance customer choice, International says it is the
rst and only global manufacturer to offer
both copper acrylate and silyl acrylate antifouling coatings within a comprehensive
range of fouling control technologies.
In 2006, International Paint patented
silyl acrylate technology for use with
products of less than 400g/l VOC. This
technology is incorporated into Intersmooth 7465Si SPC and Interswift 6900Si
and allows delivery of the same high levels of proven in-service performance as the
current Intersmooth 7460/5HS SPC and
Interswift 6800HS copper acrylate antifouling coatings.
Both new silyl products have solvent
emission levels of less than 400g/l VOC.
Designed for deep sea vessels at newbuilding and maintenance and repair, Intersmooth 7465Si SPC features 55
percent volume solids. Compared to
lower volume solids products, this results in shipyard benefits of faster application, reduced wastage and pail
consumption and lower solvent emissions to the atmosphere. Reduced overspray leads to lower contamination
levels in dock and reduced applicator exposure. For the vessel operator, the product
delivers
predictable,
high
performance fouling control for up to 90
months and its inherent self-smoothing
action potentially reduces fuel use by
four percent, cutting operational costs,
lowering carbon dioxide emissions and
improving vessel operating image said
the company.
Interswift

Oxford Advanced Surfaces

unveils its new technology
Oxford Advanced Surfaces Group Plc
(OAS) has produced a solvent resistant
oleophobic and hydrophobic coating system using its proprietary technologyOnto
XL Highly Reactive Chemistry. The technology has been used to modify the wetting
and surface energy characteristics of both
glass and plastic substrates, but could also
be utilized on other materials. A common
approach for simultaneously imparting
both hydrophobic and oleophobic functionality to a surface is to coat it directly
with a uoropolymer but there are often associated problems with the stability of the
lm towards solvents, especially on plastic
substrates. Using Onto XL technology in
conjunction with a uoropolymer prevents
delamination to result in an oleophobic/hydrophobic surface that is stable to solvent
exposure said the company.
The coating is applied in two layers
from non-uorinated solvents by common
wet chemical processing techniques, giving it scope to be printed and therefore
patterned. This technology has the potential to be used in several applications
but we believe that one of the most important markets will be organic electronics, said Sarah Vickers, product
marketing scientist at OAS. The use of
Onto XL to anchor a coating to a substrate is not conned to uoropolymers
and has the potential to be used in conjunction with other types of coating.
OAS is an innovative research and development company delivering highly advanced materials solutions in optical
coatings and highly reactive chemistry. Its
proprietary technologies, Onto highly reactive chemistry and VISARC anti-reective
coatings, deliver performance-enhancing
processes, opening up new markets for the
most desirable high-performance advanced
materials said the company. Initial applications include adhesion promotion, surface
treatment and anti-reective coatings used

Cortec launches microcorrosion

inhibiting coating
Cortec Corporation has introduced VpCI386, an organic water-based acrylic coating
that provides a multimetal corrosion protection in harsh, outdoor, unsheltered applications. Since it can be used as a direct-to-metal
coating or as a nish coat, it reduces costs
associated with corrosion said the company.
The complex mixture of non-toxic, organic inhibitors offers protection that Cortec
said is more effective than most paints and
zinc-rich primers. The product is low VOC
and non-ammable. The company said
VpCI-386 has an advantage over coatings
formulated with inorganic pigments because
the resistance has been improved by replacing pigments and metal oxides with more effective micro-corrosion inhibitors.
The combination of additives in VpCI386 provides a composite polymer barrier
that retards the reaction of metal ionization.
A protective lm is adsorbed onto metal sur-

faces and VpCI microcorrosion inhibitor

molecules form a very thin micro-layer that
reaches every area of the metal, protecting
even hard-to-reach surfaces against microcorrosion. VpCI-386 forms a fast-drying
thixotropic coating that is resistant to sagging
or running off and protects against corrosive
electrolytes in most aggressive environments.
It is a clear coating that allows visual inspection of the metal surface after application. It can be easily pigmented with pigment
dispersions. The coating is washable, has
good chemical resistance and is UV resistant,
giving optimal outdoor performance without cracking or chipping upon prolonged exposure to sunlight. It is effective over wide
array of substrates; galvanized, carbon and
stainless steels, cast iron, aluminum, copper,
concrete, wood, plaster and masonry.

empel has opened its rst Latin American marine and protective coatings factory in Buenos Aires with plans to
supply much of the region with its production,
according to Lars Johansen, the companys
group vice president for the Americas, at Conroe, Texas, near Houston. The $17 million factory will ramp up production this year to 155
liters of paint per man hour from its planned
stafng level of 30, or to 10.5 million liters per
year, expected by years end.
While much of the paint and coatings for the
Latin American market came from Singapore,
the Copenhagen-based company also operates a
factory in Houston, which has supplied Mexico
and the Central American sub-region.
Well be better placed to serve existing and new
customers in the region, as well as develop and
customize products faster, said Johansen.
While there is a free trade agreement in place
in the Southern Cone of Latin America, Mercosur, Brazil still has domestic content rules in
place for bidders seeking government contracts.
Youve got to have a presence in Brazil to really
attack the market there, said Johansen, who declined to say whether the company has future
plans to add capacity in Brazil.
Consultancy ABP Offshore notes that it has
worked with Hempel to plan for capacity in
Brazil, stating, ABP Offshore contributed in the
study of the logistics set-up for Hempel Tintas

market. Evaluations regarding the usage of

bonded warehousing as well as cost calculations
for third-party warehousing at the start-up phase
were an essential part of the study to lay the base
for Hempel to take further decisions on where
to start operations in the Brazilian market.
The company indicated that the Argentine
plant features conical dissolvers that enable
flexible production runs down to 20 to 30 percent of maximum capacity. To control the
speed at which the powder is fed into the machine from the bags, a sonic system monitors
the frequency generated from the dissolving
process and adjusts the powder feed accordingly. To reduce emissions from the cleaning
process, all the tanks are linked to a closed circuit cleaning system, which is sealed during the
cleaning process.
The company also notes that it is especially
known for [its] proven performance with [its]
epoxy urethane exterior system and [its] lining
systems for molten sulphur and plastic pellets.
Apart from Argentina, Hempel serves the
region with offices and warehouses in
Ecuador, Chile and Mexico. In Canada, the
company has offices in Surry, British Colombia; St. Albert, Alberta; and Montreal.
Hempel serves the energy, maritime, mining
and rail markets among others, with projects including oil production rigs, windmills and
pipelines. Hempel claims a 30 percent share of
the global market for container coatings. Among
notable Hempel customers in the region are YPF;
Total; Chevron; Minera Alumbrera; Pascua

No Stopping Luxury Brand Growth

Long-term
prospects look more
positive than the
current pressure car
markets are facing.

22 | Coatings World

by Sean Milmo
Europe Correspondent
milmocw@rodpub.com
n the face of it the outlook in Europe
for OEM automobile coatings looks
grim at the moment.
The region is estimated to have a 20 percent
overcapacity in car manufacturing so that plant
closures are seen to be sooner or later inevitable.
PSA Peugeot Citroen of France, which
made an operating loss last year, and OpelVauxhall, the European business of General
Motors, appeared in February to be on the
brink of forging an alliance in the region,
which analysts say could lead to at least two
plants being shut down.
Fiat of Italy, which lost 500 million ($665
million) in 2011 is also under pressure to close
uneconomical capacity.
Automobile sales in the European Union
have still not recovered from the 2008 nancial
crisis. Last years car registrations in the EU
were at the same level of 1997 and around 2.5
million below that of 2007.
However in the longer term prospects for automobile coatings in Europe are much healthier
than they would appear to be from sales and
overcapacity gures.
The current acute problems with the European car industry are mainly conned to its high

www.coatingsworld.com

volume, lower priced cars, which are the most

susceptible to competition from outside Europe,
particularly Asia, and are mostly being built in
Western European plants.
In neighbouring Eastern Europe including
Russia, which is classied as part of the worlds
emerging economies, car production has been
recovering quickly after a post-2008 downturn.
Most of the leading Western European car
companies and several Asian automobile manufacturers have plants in the area to take advantage of its low costs. Kia of Korea, which has a
large plant at Zilina, Slovakia, increased its European sales by 21 percent last year.
Premium brands, particularly the big German three of Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volkswagens Audi, are doing well, especially in
non-European export markets.
Germanys sales of exported cars went up last
year while those of the UK rose by six percent despite a slide in its domestic automobile sector. The
UK has become the export base for non-European
car manufacturers such as Nissan, Toyota and
Honda of Japan and Tata Motors of India.
A thriving export market for European-made
cars has enabled Europe to maintain its position
as a developer of new automobile technologies,
including coatings, which are ultimately rolled
out across the world.
Europe is ahead of most regions in the world
in implementing regulations curbing emissions
from cars of CO2 and other global warming
gases as well as of particulates. As a result the

European car sector and its suppliers are

pioneering new light-weight, energy-saving materials, such as plastic compounds
requiring new types of coatings.
BASF, Europes main OEM coatings
producer whose major competitors are
PPG Industries and DuPont, has just celebrated the 25th anniversary of being the
rst paint manufacturer to introduce waterborne OEM basecoats, which it estimates were applied to 35 million vehicles
worldwide last year.
The company is continuing to use Europe as an R&D platform for new coatings
concepts aimed at the global market, such
as mirror effect paints, primer and basecoat
integration, cathodic e-coatings and
scratch-resistant paints. New technologies
helped BASF achieve increased automobile
coatings sales last year in Europe.
We are very satised with our [automobile coatings] business, said Kurt
Bock, BASFs chairman, at the companys
annual press conference at Ludwigshafen,
Germany, in February. It is protable and
is well positioned all over the world.
Its OEM coatings operation in Europe
ts with the companys strategy in the region of aligning itself with customer businesses, which are in the higher ends of
their markets. These are companies that
are growing and exporting their products
all over the world, said Bock.
Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) announced in January that it is building a

plant at Leverkusen, Germany, to make

hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and
isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), which are
used mainly as raw materials for highquality low-solvent polyurethane topcoats for automobiles.
We must adjust our capacities accordingly if we are to meet the rising demand for coating and adhesive raw
materials, said Daniel Meyer, head of
coatings, adhesives and coatings at BMS.
The rapid growth in Europe of an export-orientated luxury cars sector, based
on some of the regions leading historical
brands, has been encouraging the development of new materials and design concepts in coatings, particularly for
personalized versions of the vehicles.
At Bugatti, Molsheim, France, now
owned by Volkswagen, porcelain coatings,
developed by the well-known porcelain
maker Koenigliche Porzellan-Manufaktur
(KPM) of Berlin, have been put on the exterior of a version of the Bugatti Veyron
Grand Sport model.
Ceramic coatings have been used on the
engine exhaust systems of high performing
sports cars and on motor racing vehicles.
This appears to be the rst time they have
been applied to the outside of a car.
At Bentley Motors in the UK, another
traditional luxury brand whose global
sales rose by 37 percent last year with
sales to China virtually doubling, innovative ideas on the design and application of

www.coatingsworld.com

coatings inside the vehicle are being

tested. A design company headed by
David Linley, a leading UK designer and
nephew of the countrys Queen Elizabeth,
has placed traditional wood inlays with
different types of veneer on fascias, consoles and waist rails in the interior of
Bentley models.
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, now a BMW
subsidiary whose global sales rose 31 percent last year, is intent on maintaining old
traditions of paint craftsmanship at its
plant at Goodwood, southern England.
We are continuing the grand tradition
started centuries ago by the coach-building industry with at least ve layers of
paint and clear lacquer coating being applied to each [vehicle], said Nigel Wonnacott,
Rolls-Royces
product
communications manager. Between each
layer technicians sand the body by hand.
Following application of a nal coat, the
body is meticulously hand polished for
ve hours to achieve the glossy luster normally associated with a grand piano.
As part of its program, coatings colors can be specified by customers
through a Rolls-Royce iPad App, which
enables the colors to be applied to a virtual car on the screen.
The revival of Europes luxury car sector is indicative of new opportunities in
the region for coatings innovations in automobiles, whether based on novel technologies or traditional practices. CW

Market Reports

KN&G study says U.S. paint and coatings

market worth $23 billion in 2011

According to a new study by the consulting firm Kusumgar, Nerlfi &

Growney, in 2011 U.S. consumption of
coatings is projected to be 1.4 billion
gallons, containing 7.8 billion pounds of
solids, worth $23 billion.
The industry saw its peak consumption
in 2006 and has only partially recovered
from the lows of the 2008-2009 recession.
In 2011 coating solids remain down 18
percent from the 2006 peak. A 1.5 percent
annual rate of increase is forecast for coating solids through 2016.
Coating consumption in dollars is only
three percent lower compared to 2006 because of the sharp rise in prices during
2010-2011. Coating raw material price
escalation has only partially been passed
along by the coating producer and margins have come under pressure.
Architectural coatings are the largest
segment with some 3.9 billion pounds of
solids worth $9.1 billion expected to be
consumed in 2011. New house production remains at extremely depressed levels
and home sales have yet to recover to
hoped for levels.
Coating demand from original equipment manufacturers (OEM) in 2011 is
projected at 1.98 billion pounds of solids
valued at nearly $8 billion. OEM coatings
have rebounded strongly since the recession but many end uses are still down signicantly from 2006. Special purpose
coating consumption in 2011 is expected
to be 1.95 billion pounds of solids with a
sales value of $6 billion. Roong, industrial maintenance, and trafc paint are the
large volume outlets. The decline in commercial construction and reduced spending by state and local governments is a
drag on consumption.

Study says EU alkyd resins

market slowing down
According to a new BAC report recently
published by MarketPublishers.com, demand for acrylic resins in the European
Union (EU) is trending downward. In 2010,
the demand amounted to 471,800 tons.
Within the 2006-2010 period, alkyd resins
consumption decreased by 30 percent. The
decline is caused by the economic challenges of the last few years and the decline
in demand for acrylic coatings in favor of
more environmentally friendly materials.
EU producers are working mainly to
cover the domestic market, while export
supplies share 7-10 percent in total output. Therefore, a decrease in demand domestically leads to a decline in domestic
production.
Germany covers 37 percent of EU production and consumption of alkyd resins.
In 2010, Germany produced 190,000 tons
of alkyd resins and provided 45,000 tons
for export. The other signicant Western
European manufacturing facilities are
concentrated in Italy and France.
Alkyd resin is a complex oil-modied
polyester that is included as the lm-forming agent in some paints and clear coatings.
Alkyd resin products are used in a wide
range of paint products with applications
in decorative, maintenance, and contractor
paints where excellent gloss and good durability are required. Alkyd coatings still remain the leaders of the EU coatings market.
The report, Alkyd Resins: European
Union Market Outlook 2011 and Forecast till 2016, was prepared by BAC and
recently published by The Market Publishers Ltd. For additional information,

anti-grafti, self-cleaning, moisture absorbing, gloss retention and chemical and
mechanical properties are improved signicantly using nanostructured materials.
Global revenues for nanocoatings in
2011 were estimated to be $1559 million
the report said.
Despite the market being affected by the
global economic recession, product innovation and the need to meet stringent environmental regulations is driving market
demand across a wider range of markets.
Global revenues for nanocoatings in
2017 are estimated to be $7,821 million,
a CAGR of 27.25 percent. Conservative
estimates put the 2017 market at
$4371.2 million.
The market for nanocoatings will grow
across all sectors over the next ve to 10
years, with the medical, electronics and
displays (especially smart phones), interior
and exterior household coatings and food
processing markets all experiencing signicant growth, driven by the need for improved sanitary facilities and also pushed
by the vast improvements nanocoatings
offer, from both a protective and destructive perspective. The military market will
remain the largest market with anti-corrosion coatings increasingly applied. Anticorrosion coatings and super hardness
will also drive revenues in the oil and gas
industry, for protective surfaces in
pipelines and harsh environments and on
drilling equipment. CW

Trade Secrets and Employees:

Are you covering your Ass(ets)?
By Beth McDaniel, JD
& Steve McDaniel, PhD JD
Technology Litigators
ecret formulas, manufacturing processes, nancial information, future
product plans, customer listswhat
are your trade secrets and what are you
doing to protect them from inadvertent or
intentional misuse or misappropriation by
your own employees? Trade secret protection is afforded to you as employer, but only
if you the employer take reasonable steps to
treat this information as condential and
you provide notice to employees of the status of the materials.
So, how do we protect sensitive, condential material and processes in the face
of iPhones and ash drives in the hands of
our employees? Its no longer good enough
to lock up the secret formula under lock
and key. Everything from a secret formula
to an entire manufacturing process can be
uploaded and emailed, recorded or photographed in an instant. An employee can
literally walk out the door with the company in her pocket.
Taking measures to prevent theft or inadvertent disclosure of trade secrets is imperative in industries such as the paint and
coatings industry that rely heavily on
closely held manufacturing processes and
formulae. So, in order to limit exposure to
accidental disclosure or intentional misappropriation of the company jewels, you
might be considering audio, video or computer monitoring of your employees.
What is the line between the legitimate
protection of trade secrets and invasion of
employee privacy? A prudent employer will
know the answers to several touchy questions. The laws relating to integrated employee monitoring are complex at times and
vary from state to state, but it is generally
recognized that the prevention of theft or
misappropriation of condential business information is a legitimate business reason for
monitoring employee workspace. It is the

26 | Coatings World

employers job to implement a suitable policy that falls within the connes of the law.

Can you record employee

conversations?
Generally yes, but proceed with caution.
Both federal and state laws govern the use of
electronic equipment for purposes of wiretapping or eavesdropping (listening to conversations of others). There are both civil
and criminal penalties for violations of these
laws, and the laws vary from state to state.
The federal law allows the recording of
phone calls and other electronic communications so long as one party to the conversation consents to the recording. A majority of
the states have adopted wiretapping statutes
based on the federal law. There are twelve
states, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan,
Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Washington which have
adopted more stringent standards, in which
consent by all parties to the phone call is required. These twelve states are often referred
to as the two-party states, however, if there
are more than two parties on the call, all parties need to give consent. Although most of
these statutes address wiretapping and eavesdropping, they also tend to apply to phone
calls and in-person conversations. Regardless of the state, it is illegal to record a conversation to which you are not a party, dont
have consent and could not naturally overhear. In most states, it is also illegal to disclose the contents of any illegally obtained
call or communication.
Courts have recognized employee consent through the use of written consents
and policy manual provisions. The most
important thing is that the consent is clear
and unequivocal as to the employers actions. At all times, however, caution
should be taken in taping employee calls,
in that employees may be speaking to people in multi-party consent states.

Can I monitor my employees

using hidden cameras?
In most cases the answer is yes. Twenty-four
www.coatingsworld.com

states have laws outlawing the installation or

use of hidden cameras in private places. A
private place is one where a person may reasonably expect to be safe from unauthorized
surveillance. A number of these states specically outlaw the use of hidden cameras in
bathrooms and locker rooms or for the purposes of viewing nudity. In states where no
specic law exists, the interests of the employer in using hidden surveillance cameras
will be weighed against the employees expectation of privacy. In all cases, the expectation of an employees privacy in a bathroom
will outweigh any interest of the employer.
On the other hand, courts rarely nd
that there is an objective reasonable expectation of privacy in any public place. Where
an employer hired a private investigator to
use surveillance equipment to videotape his
employee while he was in his car in a parking lot at a wedding reception and while he
was entering and leaving his home, the court
found that such surveillance was lawful because the employee-plaintiff did not allege
intrusion into any private place. See Salazar
v. Golden State Warriors, No. C-99-4825
CRB, 2000 U.S. Dist LEXIS 2366, at *2, 56 (N.D. Cal. March 3, 2000).
So you cannot catch your employees
with their pants down (literally), but what
about when the employee is in a restricted
area of your manufacturing plant? With
the exceptions listed above regarding
bathrooms and locker rooms, quality control and theft prevention are legitimate
reasons for videotaping employee activity.
Courts rarely recognize a reasonable expectation of privacy in the workplace. See
Marrs v. Marriott Corp., 830 F. Supp.
274, 283 (D. Md. 1992) (holding that
where an employee was videotaped picking a lock on a desk drawer, the employee
had no reasonable expectation of privacy
in an open ofce); Cox v. Hatch, 761
P.2d 556, 563 (Utah 1988) (nding no
reasonable expectation of privacy in a
common workplace).
Keep in mind, however, that the audio
portion of any videotape would be governed by the wiretapping laws.

Preventing employees from

downloading sensitive
information
In March 2010, a computer-monitoring system helped save a hedge fund, Citadel, from
a trade secret misappropriation of great proportion. A quantitative engineer,YihauBen
Pu, working with proprietary trading formula and strategies had uploaded condential material onto two virtual machines he
had created on his Citadel computer in order
to bypass computer security systems. When
asked what had occurred, he responded by
saying he was just uploading music, but the
system could detect activity inconsistent with
his story. Pu later attempted to discard the evidence by dumping the hard drives in a canal
maa-style, but the evidence was recovered
and he was subsequently arrested.
This is a perfect case to illustrate how the
benet of a network-monitoring system can
aid in the detection of the access and uploading of condential material. In order to
protect sensitive data, an employer can utilize both Intrusion Detection Systems and Intrusion Protection Systems. These systems
monitor for malicious network activity,
tracking use of the system and keeping
records of access, including specic les accessed and any modications made to them.

Are an employees emails

private?
In most cases, no. The employer owns the
email system at the workplace and is allowed
to examine its contents. This goes for both
intercompany emails as well as emails sent
to or received from another source. Even in
the case where an employer assured its employees that the emails would be kept condential and privileged and would not be
intercepted by the employer, and then proceeded to intercept an employees email for
the purposes of determining whether or not
the employee was making inappropriate or
unprofessional comments, the court concluded that the interests of the employer in
determining the professional conduct of the
employee outweighed any expectation of
privacy the employee might have in his email
communications. Smith v. The Pillsbury
Company, C.A. 95-5712, (E.D. Pa. 1996).
This rule generally includes private, webbased email accounts such as yahoo and
gmail. Even a password-protected account
March 2012

is not likely to create an expectation of privacy. In another case, an employee used an

eBay account with a password to sell goods
he stole from the employer, then claimed
that the employer breached his privacy by
obtaining his password. Ok, so you have to
admit the guys got some nerve. Anyhow, the
court stated there would be no absolute expectation of privacy in records kept or accessed on his workplace computer, even if
password protected. Further, the court recognized there would be no reasonable expectation of privacy with a computer usage
policy that advised its employees that their
computer activities on the ofce system
were monitored. Dwayne Campbell v.
Woodard Photographic, Inc., et al., 2006
U.S. Dist. LEXIS 36680.
However, it should be noted that a recent case in which some employee privacy
rights were recognized by the New Jersey
Supreme Court challenges that standard.
In 2010, the New Jersey Supreme Court
ruled that an employers attorneys that read
emails of an employee sent to her counsel on
a company laptop through her personal
password-protected Yahoo email account violated her privacy. Stengart v. LovingCare
Agency, Inc., 2010 WL 1189458 (N.J.
March 30, 2010). However, this case was decided on the basis that the emails were protected by the attorney-client privilege, and
did not address whether the employee would
have a reasonable expectation of privacy
with a non-lawyer.

tive information, emailing condential information, working remotely, traveling

with laptops and other data bearing devices, and the protection and return of
condential information. There should be
a signature page for the employee to indicate consent to all policies. The following items should be addressed:
a. Electronic monitoring of employees.
b. The monitoring of phone calls. The
policy manual should clearly state that
all phone calls are subject to recording
and that the employees have no personal privacy rights in the phone calls
that are made from company phones.
c. No expectation of privacy in emails
sent from the company computer system, even from private email accounts.
3. Mark condential materials clearly and
limit access to restricted areas of the
computer.
4. Put locks on doors and le cabinets.
5. Issue employee ID badges.
6. Train employees and contractors to understand their responsibility in the protection of trade secrets.
7. Password-restrict and require user identication in order to access sensitive
areas of the company les.
8. Regularly remind employees of their
obligations towards trade secrets.
9. Conduct exit interviews with employees upon termination.
10. Consider getting a professional trade
secret audit to reveal any gaps in company policies.

So whats an employer to do?

Protect, inform, get consent, maintain and
remind employees of your trade secret
policies. Employees need to know the
boundaries of their access to trade secrets,
how to treat trade secrets and the consequences if breached. It is important that
these policies are set forth in clear and unambiguous language.
1. Non-Disclosure Agreements. Each employee should sign a non-disclosure
agreement at the time of employment.
2. Company Policy. The company personnel
manual should set out the companys
policies towards the treatment of trade secrets. Among other things, some specics
that should be covered are the policies towards accessing and downloading sensiwww.coatingsworld.com

Keep in mind that union contracts may

alter the privacy expectations of employees. Furthermore, the standards for employee privacy herein apply to private
sector employees, rather than public sector or government employees.
Although there are no guarantees that a
companys trade secrets wont be misappropriated or stolen by its employees, there are
certain things you can do to protect your
trade secrets from rogue employees. Monitoring employees on the computer, phone or
in the ofce can be done legally, if consistent
with state and federal laws. Clearly setting
out your trade secret policies and getting
employee consent for electronic monitoring
will help you both PROTECT and COVER
your . . . assets. CW

The company attributed a part of this
growth to the favorable market environment in the global automotive coatings industry, where it served increased demand
from customers in Europe and Asia, especially China.
For 2012 BASF said it is looking for its

BASF is working to develop functional
materials and solutions that will contribute to the vehicles of the future
whether for cars with classical internal
combustion engines, hybrid drives or electric ones, according to Russell.
In conjunction with the trends mentioned above, coatings solutions from
BASF are designed to help improve the
productivity and environmental performance of carmakers. For example, BASF introduced the environmentally friendly
cathodic e-coatings CathoGuard 800 and
900 product lines. Cathodic e-coating,
which is the rst paint layer applied to a
body, forms the basis for perfect automotive surfaces, said Russell. It protects the
cars surfaces, edges and cavities from corrosion. The innovative new paints also
contain less than one percent solvents.
Also on the technology front BASF

General Motors uses eco-friendly water-based

three-wet paint process for Chevrolet Sonic
For the production of its subcompact Chevrolet Sonic, General
Motors brought online a new paint shop at its Orion Assembly
Center that features a "three-wet" paint process. The process
eliminates the need for a primer bake oven, normally used between the primer and color-coating layers. The Orion Assembly Center allows three layers of paint to be applied one after
another while still wet before a single trip though the oven.
This process reduces the paint shop footprint by 10 percent,
said GM. It also provides additional floor space and reduces
the energy needed to heat and cool these areas.
"Cutting our greenhouse gas emissions and reducing our
energy consumption were key to implementing our waterbased three-wet paint process," said Mauricio Pincheira, paint
manager at Orion. "We want to provide a durable paint that
impresses our first-time Sonic customers and maintain the
tough environmental standards we have across the company."
Orion's new paint shop was engineered to minimize energy
use while reducing solvent emissions. By using the three-wet

Surfactants manufacturers focus on environmental issues and developing greener

urfactants are a key ingredient in paint and coatings formulations. Ceresana Research estimates that the global surfactant market will generate revenues of more than $41
billion in 2018translating to an average annual growth of 4.5
percent. With a roughly 37 percent share of global consumption,
Asia Pacic is the largest surfactant outlet, followed by North
America and Western Europe. According to Ceresana Research,
over the next eight years, shares in demand of the individual
world regions will shift signicantly. The analysts from Ceresana
forecast countries in Asia-Pacic to increase their shares in global
surfactant demandmainly at the expense of Western Europe
and North America. In addition, South America will see strong
growth, predominantly because of massive increases in production and consumption in Brazil.

Asia is a rapidly growing region, especially in demand for

APEO-free offerings. This is especially evident in China for
two reasons, said Shiona Stewart, additives marketing manager, Dow Coatings Materials. First, a new standard (HJ/T
201-2005) is scheduled to come into legislation soon, requiring paint manufacturers to offer APEO-free paints in order to
comply with and pass the certification for China Environmental Labeling. Dows Ecosurf surfactants offer the compliance
solution and are generating tremendous interest from the regions major paint manufacturers.
Additionally, recent high prole introductions of ultra low
odor, low VOC paints by several of the Asia Pacic regions top
manufacturers are driving a signicant market adoption trend.
The largest volume gains in architectural coatings are coming from emerging economies such as China and India, but they
have also been impacted by the overall economic downturn,
said Shruti Singhal, global marketing director, coatings special-

ties, Ashland Specialty Ingredients. With nearly 20 percent of

Ashlands annual sales coming from these emerging regions, we
are continuing to focus on capital investments in manufacturing
and R&D, such as supporting our customers with new laboratories in China and India.
Although emerging regions represent great growth potential,
developed areas offer opportunities as well.
Developed geographies where customers are moving to more
and more waterborne and solvent-free systems present a great
opportunity for innovations in surfactant technology, said Jim
Stange, North America coatings marketer, Dow Corning Corp.
Customers are looking for more environmentally friendly products with lower VOCs and BTX-free that help to meet more
stringent regulations and customers requirements. Products with
less environmental persistence are required. From an economics
standpoint customers are looking for surfactants that can solve
multiple problems, allow the coatings to keep up with faster
processes in manufacturing and may also be effective at low
usage levels.
Paumer Brothers sees good prospects for growth in applications for higher performance coatings such as epoxies,
polyurethanes and polyaspartics. We see continued advancements in 100 percent solids coatings where new surfactants offer
an opportunity to decrease viscosity and/or increase loadings of
pigments and llers, particularly where this increase represents a
greater efciency in manufacturing or a direct reduction in raw
material costs, said Craig McNair, COO and director of technology, Paumer Brothers. Formulators of paints and coatings
are being asked to improve manufacturing efciency and reduce
costs. Its as simple as that. New surfactants that reduce viscosity and improve application properties in 100 percent solids coatings represent an important opportunity because the formulator
can substitute lower-cost raw materials, including solvents, pigments and llers into the formulation.
Environmental regulations have had a profound effect on the
surfactants market. Increasingly strict regulations are driving the
need for low and zero VOC products.
Environmental and regulatory issues remain a prominent
factor in the development and marketing of surfactants, particularly with regards to compliance with REACH standards, said
Izzy Colon, VP, general manager additives, VP science and technology, Troy Corp. The elimination of APE surfactants (alkyl
phenol ethoxylate), which have been the workhorse of the industry for years, creates serious formulation issues. Some suppliers have invested in developing green products in
anticipation of these concerns. Troy, for instance, offers a full
suite of green, environmentally friendly Troysol wetting and
ow and leveling additives with multifunctional benets. These
products have proven to be sustainable and highly effective.
According to Singhal, stringent regulations to move to
lower-VOC and APEO-free formulations are driving the global
change in demand for surfactants with unique performance attributes. In addition, customers want to combine functionality such as substrate wetting, better flow and leveling with
performance attributes to reduce the total number of raw maMarch 2012

terials used, he said. This reduces the number of steps required to achieve desired formulations, thereby lowering overall costs. One example would be Ashlands offering of Dextrol
and Strodex phosphate ester surfactants (PES), which help
meet these customer needs.
Environmental regulations have been the impetus for the inux of green products being offered to formulators of paint
and coatings. Facing both regulatory pressure and consumer demand, coatings manufacturers need to offer products that offer
the best of both worlds: the same high quality and surface characteristics as those historically offered, and green attributes, such
as low VOCs, said Colon To help coatings manufacturers
achieve these goals, additives suppliers such as Troy are focusing
more on multifunctional additives, that is, single additive products that accomplish the tasks of several additives.
For instance, Troys Z line of performance additives, many
of which are multifunctional, is engineered specically for low
VOC, APE-free coatings systems in which compliance and maximum coating performance are imperative, said Colon. Troys
multifunctional additives enhance multiple coating properties,
including surface wetting, improved adhesion, surface ow and
leveling, color development, surface slip and defoaming.
All new developments in our company are geared at helping
our customers meet their green standards, said Singhal. We understand that the denitions are different around the world, so

Ceresana Research Publishes Market Study

on Surfactants
According to a new study from Ceresana Research, global
demand for anionic surfactants was approximately 6.5 million tons in 2010. Anionic and non-ionic surfactants combined account for roughly 85 percent of global demand for
surfactants. The firm expects non-ionic surfactants to see
the strongest growth between 2010 and 2018. Despite this
global trend towards non-ionic surfactants, anionic surfactants will remain the second-largest product group, especially in Africa, the Middle East and Asia countries, with the
exception of Japan and South Korea.
The report analyzes how surfactant consumption will develop in the individual markets. Most important buyers
worldwide include manufacturers of household cleaners and
detergents. Industrial cleaners accounted for just less than
nine percent of global consumption in 2010. Body care
products and cosmetics had a 9.5 percent share. Other industrial applications, such as agrochemicals, photo chemicals, oil field chemicals, construction materials, food-stuffs,
adhesives, lubricants as well as metalworking, mining, and
pulp and paper, accounted for approximately 11 percent of
worldwide consumption.

Surfactants Update

we have developed close partnerships with our customers to help

them meet their goals. As we pursue strict regulatory targets, we
are doing so with a very strong emphasis on increasing performance properties such as stain resistance, hiding, appearance
and gloss, thereby focusing our efforts around paint quality and
durability as well.
According to Salvatore Monte, president of Kenrich Petrochemicals, Inc., some key issues facing the surfactants market
include cost performance, environmental compliance regulations such as REACH, biodegradability, green and sustainable products.
Kenrich is meeting its customers environmental needs with a
number of sustainable products. We are making more efcient

use of raw materials through the use of organometallic titanate,
zirconate and aluminate to couple and electro-chemically bond,
catalyze and functionalize two dissimilar interfaces.
Rhodia also works alongside its customers to design products
and solutions with reduced impact on health and the environment.
Our rst step is to understand what our customer means by
greener, said Mechelle Engemann, sustainable development manager, Rhodia Novecare. As part of the Rhodia Way, the groups
approach to corporate social responsibility, Rhodia uses procedures that monitor its products throughout their life cycle.

Performance Matters
Developing environmentally compliant products that meet
performance requirements is a constant challenge for surfactant manufacturers.
Regulations in this area can increase the formulating challenge for stability, said Stewart. Weve anticipated these challenges and were working closely with our customers to deploy
the solutions to help them successfully address the new regulations balanced with their performance objectives. As a result,
were seeing much greater optimization of formulations that
maintain performance within these more stringent requirements.
The new regulations are driving the industry to rethink formulation strategy, which in turn, is driving adoption of new surfactants and other additive technologies and product offerings.
34 | Coatings World

Performance is always key, said Pierre Hennaux, global

market manager for emulsion polymerization, Rhodia Novecare.
As the market is evolving toward zero-VOC systems, new surfactant technologies are needed to maintain high performance.
Rhodia has seized this opportunity to create additives that improve resistance in zero-VOC systems. Sustainability is a theme
underlying most discussions in the coatings industry. Conversion
to APE-free products in picking up in the Americas and Asia.
Another key trend is cost reduction.
The principal issue today in the industry remains the economy, the rising cost of oil and chemical raw materials, an issue
that causes coatings manufacturers to look for better ways to
cut these costs, said McNair. Profit margins for coatings are
reduced in some cases to about one-half of historical levels,
and manufacturers are looking for lower cost sources of chemical raw materials, including products that are normally used
in relatively small quantities in a formulation, such as additives and surfactants.
Coatings manufacturers remain resistant to accepting price
increases on raw materials such as pigments and surfactants,
even when faced with shortages and allocations, McNair said.
However, prices of raw materials imported from China, India
and other parts of the Far East are entering a new phase of
global competition with the trend towards higher prices. It even
costs more today to ship raw materials from the Far East to the
United States.
Changing economies are creating a world of new opportunities for binder technologies and the surfactants that enable
them, said Hennaux. For example, on one hand you have the
rising costs of key raw materials, such as acrylic monomers and
titanium dioxide. On the other hand you have an inux of shale
gas to the market, which seems like an attractive long-term economic advantage for derived monomer. This changing economic
landscape is exciting for paint and coatings manufacturers who
can potentially reduce their costs with the help of solution
providers like Rhodia. For example, specialty surfactants have
been used to enable Vinyl VeoVa, binders to substitute styrene
acrylics in high PVC formulations.
This is a very exciting time for formulators. At Dow for
example, were introducing an expanded additives innovation
platform that offers much deeper formulating insight including
relationships with our binder and opaque polymers, said
Stewart. Formulators have access to increasingly sophisticated products and accompanying research to help them
achieve their objectives. Included are new surfactant offerings
that can represent a lower risk, higher yield investment for customers balancing environmental objectives, raw material costs,
and performance.
Dow has been dedicating significant R&D and commercialization emphasis on broadening its Ecosur surfactants
portfolio, which balances the ongoing need for high performance with the growing need for low-VOC options. All
of our Ecosurf surfactants are APEO-free; the majority are
also readily biodegradable and several are low in aquatic toxicity, said Stewart. CW

New Ross laboratory

ribbon/paddle blender
Ross has introduced a new Ribbon
Blender Model, the 42NSD-1S, a multipurpose unit equipped with interchangeable double ribbon and paddle agitators.
With a maximum working capacity of
one cubic foot, the 42NSD-1S is ideal for
most laboratory and pilot-scale blending
requirements. This vacuum-rated blender
also comes with a discharge extruder assembly installed along the bottom of the
trough to enhance mixing, eliminate
dead zones and enable 100 percent complete discharge.

New Ross Model 42NSD-1S

44 | Coatings World

Ross Ribbon Blenders are used for

blending dry powders, granules, pellets and
other solid forms. The agitators inner and
outer helical ribbons are pitched to move
material axially, in opposing directions,
and also radially. This combination promotes fast and thorough blending. Paddle
agitators deliver gentler mixing which is
more suited for shear-sensitive and friable
applications. Both systems also function as
paste mixers, vacuum dryers and granulators/coaters - evenly coating a liquid or
very ne solid component throughout the
surfaces of larger particle ingredients.

Arkema Coating Resins

introduces Celocor opaque
polymer for partial
replacement of TiO2
Arkema Coating Resins has introduced
Celocor opaque polymer, a voided latex
product that imparts hiding and functions
as a partial replacement for titanium dioxide (TiO2).
The company said when compared to
competitive opacifiers with similar functionality, Celocor opaque polymer offers
a more balanced approach to performance attributes such as tint strength,
gloss development, burnish resistance
and scrub resistance.
Celocor opaque polymer can help reduce raw material costs and improve hiding in a wide range of products, including
interior or exterior coatings from flat to
semigloss. Additionally, this product
meets the standards of Arkema Coating
Resins EnVia program and is designed to
help formulators achieve
their sustainability and
regulatory goals in finished coating products.
Celocor opaque polymer has low odor, contains no added APE
surfactants or formaldehyde and is compatible
with low VOC (0-50 g/l)
formulations.

Dow Coating Materials offers

dimethyl carbonate pre-mix for
low-VOC concrete coatings
Dow Coating Materials has introduced
Paraloid B-66 thermoplastic acrylic resin
in dimethyl carbonate (DMC), a pre-mix
that is ideal for low-VOC concrete sealers.
Dow said the Paraloid B-66 acrylic resin
family of products features the benets of
ultra-low VOC as supplied, while providing a lower-cost alternative to VOC-exempt products in t-butyl acetate or
PCBTF. Forming clear solutions, which
air-dry fast to form hard, colorless lms
displaying block resistance and color retention, the new DMC offering affords
coatings manufacturers equal performance with the added advantage of facilitating VOC compliance said the company.
Paraloid B-66 DMC also exhibits moderate evaporation rates and should give similar solvent compatibility as Paraloid B-66
resins in xylene and toluene.
In addition to Paraloid B-66 DMC,
Dow Coating Materials offers a full
range of solutions for concrete coatings,
including Maincote HG-31, a waterborne acrylic for cementitious substrates
where water barrier properties are important, as well as a variety of Rhoplex
Resins to meet performance needs such
as good exterior weatherability, reduced
water vapor permeability, dirt resistance,
low solvent capability, low odor and
APEO-free, being manufactured without
the use of APEO surfactants.

Cytec offers eco-friendly epoxy

dispersion
Cytec Industries Inc. now offers a new solvent-free waterborne epoxy dispersion
that allows for formulating very low VOC
systems for topcoat and primer applications on metal and concrete. The Beckopox EP 2384w/57WA resin, has been

MNYCA Hosts Workshop on Social Media

Strategies and the Coatings Industry

The Metropolitan New York Coatings Association (MNYCA) recently held a workshop on Social Media and the Coatings
industry. The workshop provided a
forum for professionals involved with the
coatings industry to learn the benets of
using social media, such as Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin, as well as tools for
optimizing a companys website and
search engine results.
According to MNYCA, in 2009, 59
percent of the network users in the United
States had created a social network prole. Facebook alone had 750 million
members as of August 2011. This presents
a huge opportunity for companies to get
their message out.
The workshop featured three speakers
well versed in the ins and outs of developing a social media platform to best suit
a business.
Andrew DellAglio, regional sales
manager of Yellowbook360, began the
workshop with a presentation focused
on the changes and advancements that
the Internet brings to local business
owners. He outlined the various New
Media products that are available for
local business owners.
Matt Koenig, a regional manager of
Yellowbook360, gave a presentation on
print and interactive online marketing.
The primary focus of his presentation was
on how small- and medium-sized businesses can attract the most potential customers. Koenig offered his expertise on
effective web design and the role of search

engine optimization principles to allow

businesses to reach the rst page of
Google and other search engines for their
desired target audience.
The workshop ended with a presentation from Mike Walker, CEO of WalkerTek Interactive Marketing. Walkers
presentation mainly focused on the
ways to make Twitter, Facebook,
Linkedin, Youtube and other social
media work for a business. During his
talk, he focused on developing a social
media program for a company and explained why social media content makes

a difference. He also offered suggestions

on choosing the right social media platforms and how to tie different platforms
together to form a comprehensive social
media platform.
I think an important concept to keep
in mind is that your customers can do social media without you, so at a minimum,
you need to keep an eye on what is being
said, either about you, or your industry in
general, said Walker. For companies that
are actively involved in social media, it is
important to add value to the community,
and not just be self-serving. CW
