grew up in the car culture of

Southern California in the
1960s, attended many drag
races and custom car shows, and
developed a love and appreciation
for classic muscle cars of that era.
I first became involved in practical

shooting as a member of the original Southwest Pistol League in Los Angeles
in the mid-1970s and was introduced to one of the all-time-classic firearms,
the Colt 1911A1. That attachment to handguns and classic firearms has
continued to this day.
Ive owned examples of the classic 1911A1 pistol, in one form or another,
for most of my adult life. I think one of the reasons I tend to choose handguns
over anything else is because of the challenge they provide. To be sure,
hitting the 10-ring of a high-power rifle target while trying to dope the wind
and mirage at 600 yards is extremely difficult, and being able to smoke
a clay pigeon using a finely fitted shotgun has its challenges as well.
But for me, because of the various types of competitions available for

of the century, through the Thompson submachine gun of the 1920s, the M1
Garand and then M14/M1A of WWII, through the pre-1964 Winchester Model
70 bolt-actioned rifle, and continuing on through the other classic Winchester
of that era, the Model 12-pump shotgun.
Current classic firearms would arguably include the Remington M700 rifle,
the Glock pistol, the S&W Model 10 revolver and the Remington 870 shotgun.
I think thats what I enjoy the most about firearms, other than shooting them,
is the rich history and appreciation of the finely engineered classic guns from
then to now.

can turn into a classic of your own.

here are few niches in the firearm
market that are more competitive
than the full-size tactical pistol
segment.
Perhaps more than any other type of
firearm, these guns serve as life insurance
for thousands of uniformed military and
police officers on a daily basis, and gun
companies invest millions in the design,
production and manufacture of these guns
in an effort to offer a competitive option.
There are some very good guns that dont
get the recognition they deserve in this
arena. Case in point, CZs high-capacity P09 semiautomatic, the latest offering from a
company that produced one of Europes
favorite service guns, the CZ-75.
The P-09 may trace its heritage back to

the 75, but it is its own gun, a thoroughly
modern combat handgun with the goods to
compete in this crowded field. There are a
lot of reasons to love the CZ and here are
nine of them.
VERSATILITY
The P-09 was designed to

accommodate a variety of
different tastes.
For starters, it features an ambidextrous
design, so left- or right-handed shooters
can operate the controls on this pistol
equally well.

and forth relatively easily. The large
accessory rail offers plenty of space for
mounting lights or lasers, and the oversized
trigger guard makes it easy to shoot the gun
even while wearing tactical gloves.
The P-09 comes with three interchangeable back straps (sized as small,
medium and large) so its easy to customize
the grip with components provided with the
initial purchase of the firearm. Theres also a
version with a threaded barrel for suppressors.
Combat pistols are thoroughly

tested and that testing requires
heavy abuse to ensure that the gun will
perform under any and all conditions. The
CZ is a quality-built gun all you need to
do is pick one up and cycle the action a few

times to feel how smooth and well-made
this pistol is.
The large extractor offers peace of mind
and the gun that I tested went through
several hundred rounds of ammunition, both
rapid and slow fire, without a single
malfunction. I did my best to give the CZ
every opportunity to fail, firing rapid shots
with a limp-wristed grip, shooting full
magazines in rapid succession, shooting lowpower loads and cheap, dirty ammo. It is a
hammer-fired gun, which offers some peace
of mind over a striker-fired pistol because the
slide doesnt have to be pulled back to fire
the gun in the event of primer failure.

DEPENDABILITY

The Crimson Trace Rail Master makes an excellent addition when mounted on the P-09.
groups at 25 yards off a fixed bench, which
is excellent for a production pistol. But
bench-rest accuracy and real-world tactical
accuracy are two different things, and thats
an important distinction to make. Mounting
a handgun into a machine rest will tell you
how well the chamber is cut, how uniform
the rifling is and what the pistols inherent
accuracy is.
Field accuracy is harder to quantify and it
is affected by grip shape, balance, the
quality of the trigger pull, the shooters
influence on the handgun when delivering
the shot and so forth. The P-09 is accurate
from the bench, and its ergonomics and
design make it an easy gun to shoot well in
the field, too.
CAPACITY
If youre relying on a gun to see

you through a real crisis, its good
to know that it holds 20 rounds of 9mm
ammunition (19+1, 15+1 in .40 S&W).
Thats a lot of shooting, and if you carry a
loaded 9mm pistol with a spare magazine,
youd have more than three dozen rounds
ready for action.
For concealed carry or home defense
guns, thats overkill, but duty guns are a
different story altogether. That prodigious
capacity doesnt cause the grip to expand to
the size of a liter soda bottle either; the grip

additions, here are some ideas:
I. CUSTOM SIGHTS
CZ Custom offers a wide selection of iron sights for the P-09,
including ber optic, duty and tactical rear sights, and ber optic
front sights. Finding a set of iron sights that allow you to shoot over
a suppressor can be tough but CZ also offers a set of higher sights
designed for use with pistols that are outtted with suppressors.

II. LASER AND LIGHT OPTIONS
Crimson Trace offers a wide selection of different laser and light
options, including the new Rail Master Pro that features both a
laser (red or green) and a high-intensity LED light. This unit is
compact yet it serves as both a laser and a light, maximizing the
space available on the accessory rail. The Rail Master Pro has an
MSRP of $279 with a red laser and $379 with a green laser.

III. LASER DOTS
LaserLytes new Center Mass laser offers a ring of eight laser dots
that surround a central aiming point, providing for rapid target
acquisition even in low light. The unit is very light and extremely
durable. The cost is $164.95.

remains relatively thin, given the magazine

capacity, and is comfortable for shooters
with a wide range of hand sizes.
BALANCE
TRIGGER
SLEEK PROFILE
SIZE
Because it holds 20 rounds, the

P-09 needs to be appropriately
balanced, it is just that, and with a full
magazine it points naturally. Even when the
magazine is loaded to half-capacity, the gun
is still well-balanced. The grip helps things;
it has an appropriate angle and is wide
enough to absorb recoil and narrow enough
to be comfortable. The low slide and
excellent sights make target acquisition
easy, and accurate double-taps can be
delivered very quickly.
The CZs fire controls were set close to the frame, making for a slim profile, yet were
easy to manipulate.
The smooth trigger and generous area around the trigger on the P09 make for
effective shooting with gloves on.
The P-09 uses the tried and true three-dot sight system, which is fast and effective.

The P-09 utilizes the Omega

DA/SA Trigger System. In doubleaction mode, the pull is a relatively heavy
10 pounds; in SA mode, it breaks at slightly
less than 4 pounds. Its a clean, smooth
trigger and one of the best Ive found on
any standard production gun, especially
given the price point. The trigger contour is
also well thought-out; it features a straight
center section with a steep angle on the
bottom.
The low bore axis means that

there isnt a lot of gun above the
CZ P-09s polymer frame. That helps make
the gun easier to shoot quickly by
transferring the recoil up the shooters arm
rather than around the axis of the wrist, but
it also has an additional benefit of reducing
its overall height. This helps with recovery
during recoil and aids in delivering faster
follow-up shots.
The front edges of the slide have been
angled, and the slide stop, decocker (or, if
you prefer, the manual safety) and the
magazine release button are all low-profile
and wont snag.
The sights also have a smooth, lowprofile design. This is obviously a gun that
was engineered with special attention to
creating a sleek, smooth, easy-to-draw
profile.

combat pistol. Thats not to say its heavy (it
weighs just under 30 ounces unloaded) or
that it is oversized and unwieldy. That
simply means its a full-frame, highcapacity, manageable pistol with a
relatively long barrel and plenty of gripping
surface, a purpose-built gun that was
designed with tactical applications in mind.
PRICE
The CZ P-09 is priced between

$530596, making it
unequivocally one of the best bargains in
the world of tactical pistols.
I shot several hundred rounds at the
range before I checked the specifications
from CZ and was surprised that the gun
retailed for under $600. I would have
guessed it at a $700 or even $800, and the
CZ P-09 has the look and feel of any gun in
that range. Actual price in stores may vary,
so you might find one under $500. If you do,
buy it. You wont be sorry. GW

he business of manufacturing of firearms isnt always

smooth and trouble-free. As such, in the 1960s and
throughout the 1980s, Savage Arms struggled against an
onslaught of competition.
During that era, ownership of the company changed frequently
before finally culminating in a bankruptcy filing in 1988. Many
feared this would be the final blow to the Savage legacy, but we
now know that didnt happen. The credit for the companys
survival goes to Ron Coburn. As president/CEO of Savage, he
immediately implemented a series of carefully laid strategies and

production changes that brought the company back from the brink.
A large part of the Coburn plan was to continue the companys
efforts to construct affordable and high-quality rifles and to make
sure they had a high degree of accuracy. The Axis series centerfire
rifles are a perfect example of that, as I learned when I had the
chance to review the Axis II XP.
THE AXIS II XP PACKAGE

When the Axis was first released a few years ago, it quickly
became one of Savages most-popular hunting models. Being so

well received by the worlds shooters, the

company recently decided to take the rifle
to a new level by offering a slightly
modified version in a ready-to-shoot
package called the Axis II XP.
This package included a Weaver Kaspa
3-9x40mm scope, which comes from the
factory already mounted and boresighted,
but the benefits dont stop there.
Rather than possessing a traditional-style
trigger like the original Axis, the new Axis II
XP comes equipped with an AccuTrigger.
The AccuTrigger is a great system that
allows the rifle to be adjusted to very light
trigger pull weights and still be safe to use
in the field for hunting.

adjustment tool, which comes with each
rifle, is inserted into a hole located near the
rear of the trigger assembly. A turn in one
direction will increase the weight of the
pull; when turned in the opposite direction,
it lessens it. The test rifle came from the
factory with the trigger already adjusted to
2.68 pounds (five-pull average), and the
consistency between those five pulls was
extremely good, varying by a mere 3.2
ounces.
The action design on the Axis II XP is a
common one used on many Savage rifles
and was developed in an effort to limit the

Less factory machining equates into less
production cost and those savings are
passed on to the customer in the form of
lower rifle prices.
This design results in the rear portion of
the bolt being a bit larger in diameter than
most other actions. While not necessarily
unattractive in appearance, it does make
Savage centerfire rifles easy to recognize. In
recent years I have shot many Savage rifles
that possessed this action and have always
found them to function very well and the
accuracy to be very good.
It is a push-feed design with plungertype ejectors located within the recessed
face of the bolt. Twin locking lugs are
present, which have been positioned up
front. The cast metal bolt handle comes
non-checkered with the knob being
uniquely oval-shaped. I particularly liked
the fact that the Axis II action was designed
so that bolt could be opened without
needing to take the safety off. This is a
great safety feature.
Removing the Axis II bolt from the
receiver was a little tricky and to do so
essentially became a multi-hands operation.
After making certain the rifle is completely
unloaded (chamber and magazine), the
procedure detailed here must be followed.
Place the safety in the off position and
raise the bolt handle. The bolt release
(located along the right side of the receiver)
should now be pushed forward while
simultaneously pulling the trigger and
drawing the bolt rearward. This releases the

The Axis II XP is available in a wide
range of popular hunting calibers, including
.223, .22-250, .243, .25-06, .270, .30-06,
.308 and 7mm-08. Each rifle comes allinclusive with an AccuTrigger, a synthetic
stock, a detachable box-type magazine,

pad. I chose the .223 for testing, which, in
my view, would make a perfect choice for
the hunting of a wide range of small- to
medium-sized game and predators. I like
the hunting versatility that comes with this
particular cartridge and believe it would be
a near-perfect choice for anything from
prairie dogs, ground squirrels, foxes, coyotes
and marmots, all the way up to the hunting
of feral hogs, with the right
ammunition.
The magazine capacity
was listed at four rounds by
the factory, but I found I
could easily squeeze in a fifth

round. Quite likely this increase in magazine

capacity over that purported by the factory
is due to the smaller overall physical size of
the .223 cartridges versus the other
available caliber choices. Be aware that
trying to squeeze in extra ammunition
beyond what is listed from the factory can
sometimes induce malfunctions.
The removable magazine is secured into
place by way of an integral plastic latch
system that consists of the same molded
plastic material as the magazine floor plate.
The synthetic stock is matte black, which
perfectly matches the finish of the 22-inch
carbon steel 1:9 twist rate barrel. This
barrel is rifled with a 1:9 twist rate, which
is perfectly suited for the wide range of
bullet weights this rifle is intended to use.
The 1:9 twist rate will stabilize the heavier
.224 caliber bullets (up to the 6970 grain)
that handloaders like to use in order to get a
little extra range out the .223 caliber, and
will also handle the more-standard 52-55grain bullet weights that are more-common
to this caliber. The heavier bullets will
retain their velocity at longer ranges.
BURNING RANGE POWDER

After running a few solvent-soaked
patches down the bore to clean out any
left-behind debris from the manufacturing
processes, I headed out to my private range
for a powder-burning episode.
The boresighting had already been
completed at the factory so my first zeroing
rounds were already on paper. From there it
was an easy operation to fine-tune the
scope so my bullets were impacting
precisely where I wanted them.
For my testing, I chose to shoot factoryloaded Federal Premium ammunition, which
had been loaded with the excellent 43grain Speer TNT Green bullets. Id used this
same ammunition previously on a prairie

dog shooting-palooza a short time back and

found it to be very consistent and accurate.
With this ammo sighted in to hit point of
aim point of impact at 100 yards, the bullets
would drop -2.7 inches at 200 yards and
drop -11.9 inches as they reached the 300yard mark.
It didnt take long before I became
impressed by the accuracy of both the
Savage Axis II XP rifle and my Federal
ammo. Averaging all of the three-shot
groups produced a mean size of 1.45 inches
with the smallest group measuring a mere
0.69 inches and the largest coming in at
1.875 inches. I felt these results were quite
good, but Im sure after the rifle has been
fully broken in, and when shooting
handloads that have been specifically
tailored to the rifle, those group sizes could
easily be squeezed down even smaller.
BARGAIN, QUALITY
The Savage Axis II XP is a great bargain
for the money. While it might not be quite
as pretty as some other rifles that have
been adorned with a fancy walnut stock,
high-gloss bluing and a slightly more
elegant features, I really liked the simplicity
and ruggedness of this particular rifle.
Its weather-resistant exterior is perfectly
matched to the harsh conditions frequently

encountered in many hunting environments.
Even though the Kaspa riflescope supplied
with this rifle essentially resides at the
bottom of the Weaver hierarchy of products,
I found the view it offered to be
exceptionally clear and, overall, the scope
functioned perfectly throughout my testing.
Obviously, the Axis II XP rifle/scope
combo package was never intended to
compete as a high-end collectable firearm.
However, with an MSRP of only $489 for
the entire rifle/scope package and the high
degree of accuracy and performance that I
experienced with it, I would be surprised if
anyone could find anything to object about.

Any rifle that can consistently group as well
as this one did right out of the box while
shooting factory-loaded ammunition is a
great value.
For those shooters who dont want to
take the time to find an appropriate scope
base to fit the rifle, locate the proper height,
size and color of rings, bore sight the rifle
and even select and mount a scope, I would
think the Axis II XP would be the perfect
match for that individual. GW
