SLIDELL FAMILY HOMESCHOOLERS CO-OP

ABOUT US
Mission Statement
Slidell Family Homeschoolers Co-op exists to provide educational opportunities,
support, and social events for homeschooling families with school-age children by means of
weekly parent-taught classes during the fall and spring semesters, monthly field trips
throughout the year, and frequent social activities such as parties, park days, and moms
nights out.
What is Slidell Family Homeschoolers Co-op?
Slidell Family Homeschoolers Co-op (SFHC) offers homeschool families opportunities
to get together and enjoy social and educational interaction in an environment that is familyoriented and safe. Parents in the Co-op may choose to teach a class about something they
enjoy or are passionate about. Parents may also choose to just enroll their children in
classes and help out in other ways, such as being a substitute or outside monitor or helping
with set-up or clean-up. In choosing to join SFHC, families will also be agreeing to submit to a
set of guidelines that apply while at the Co-op or Co-op functions. These are not meant to
impose on anyone, rather to protect the values of the families that are making the sacrifice
to educate their children themselves for whatever reason it may bereligious or otherwise.

SLIDELL FAMILY HOMESCHOOLERS CO-OP

GUIDELINES FOR PARTICIPATION
1. RegistrationIn order to register for classes with SFHC, the semesters membership
dues as well as all class fees must be paid. Also, children need to be at least four years
old by October 1 for the fall semester or February 1 for the spring semester. Families
registering older siblings who have children younger than 4 years old may register them
in the Preschool Program provided to the younger members. The Preschool Program
provides care and learning to younger siblings who are not yet old enough to join the
regular Co-op classes and to four year olds who are not yet ready for the regular Co-op
classes.
2. Parental Responsibilities
a. Children are not permitted to be dropped off at Co-op. Parents or a responsible
adult are required to be present at the designated location for the duration of
time that children are in attendance.
b. Families are expected to attend at least two of the three hours of classes. Part of
the benefit of the Co-op is the community that develops amongst members.
Committed participation leads to deeper and more beneficial relationships for
members. Attendance for all three hours is highly encouraged, but we understand
other commitments and the challenges that come with younger children make
that length impossible during certain seasons of life.
c. It is the parents responsibility to change all diapers and handle all wiping
assistance in the bathroom for nursery and preschool children. Childrens
bathroom needs should be handled before Co-op, between classes, and during
lunch.
d. Every parent has a job to help Co-op run smoothly. Parents can either teach/coteach a class or sign up as a volunteer. We will need nursery workers, substitutes,
and lunch helpers. Parents will be required to sign up for some of these positions
or for set-up and/or clean-up throughout the semester. The number of classes in
which parents are volunteering will determine the number of tasks they will have.
If someone needs to be out for any reason, it is his or her responsibility to have
those roles covered by someone else. The sign-up form for volunteer positions will
be available on registration day.
e. Every family will have to miss from time to time due to travels, sickness, and other
unavoidable issues; however, in order to respect the whole membership, families
missing four or more weeks in a semester (except in the event of an unforeseen
circumstance) or missing more than two weeks without contacting a replacement
for his or her positions will be contacted by two directors. In the case of excessive
absences, the family will be on probation the following semester and will not be
allowed to volunteer in a teaching position. If excessive absences continue in the
second semester, the family will be asked not to return to the Co-op. In the case
of two or more absences without warning, the family may be asked to leave the
3

Co-op; and fees will not be refunded. This policy is for the protection of all our
members. Teachers freely give many hours each week to planning and
preparation for their classes, and excessive absences from students cause a
hardship. Also, volunteers who are frequently absent cause much more work and
stress for everyone else.
3. Mutual CourtesyPlease be respectful of the different lives each family leads. There
is to be no foul language used at any time during Co-op hours or Co-op events. Please be
respectful of others religious beliefs or lack thereof. No one should be imposing his or
her views on anyone else, especially on others children. We believe firmly in freedom of
speech and would not request that these subjects be off limits. Rather, treat those
around you with respect and choose your words carefully when talking about sensitive
subjects. If it is found that someone is being consistently disrespectful or careless in
their words (again, especially around children), they may be asked to leave the Co-op;
and fees will not be refunded.
4. Smoking PolicySmoking is not allowed around SFHC members, especially children,
during Co-op hours. Members are expected to abide by the smoking policies in place at
our meeting location as well as other field trip and event locations. Due to children with
allergies, we ask that any smokers use caution when working closely with children; since
strong, lingering cigarette smells on hair and clothing can trigger an allergic reaction.
5. Dues and FeesThe membership dues and all class fees need to be paid at
registration in one sum and are non-refundable after the teachers meeting or two weeks
prior to the first day of Co-op classes, whichever comes first. This deadline allows our
teachers the opportunity to get their class fees and purchase any supplies necessary
before classes begin. Members will receive a receipt for all dues and fees paid to SFHC.
6. Dress Code (for adults and children)Common sense and modesty should be
used when dressing for Co-op. Shorts or skirts should be no shorter than fingertip length.
Please do not wear low-cut or very tight shirts. Any holes in clothes should not be
exposing anything the clothes were originally meant to cover. Please do not wear clothes
with offensive language, pictures, or statements.
7. Behavior ContractsAll students old enough to write their names will be required to
sign a behavior contract in which they will agree to abide by certain rules. These
contracts are not meant to be a hardship, but are simply to ensure all members of SFHC
can enjoy class time and other activities and represent SFHC in the best way during field
trips and community activities. Disciplinary actions will be outlined in this document.
Parents will also sign the contract agreeing to oversee the behavior of all of their
children, including those too young to sign, and hold them to the expected behavior
outlined in the contract. Parents are also expected to watch over their children outside of
class time (during lunch, as well as before and after Co-op class hours and on any field
trips, park days, or extra events sponsored by SFHC). If a child causes continuous and
uncontrolled disruption during classes or at other events and activities, the family may
be asked to not participate in future activities or be asked to leave the Co-op. If a family
is asked to leave, fees will not be refunded.

SLIDELL FAMILY HOMESCHOOLERS CO-OP

GENERAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
1. Registration ProcessRegistration occurs before each semester in the fall and
spring. Information on registration will be shared on our Facebook Group,
www.facebook.com/groups/SlidellFamilyCoop, and website, www.slidellfamilycoop.com,
prior to the beginning of the semester. Membership dues for each family are required to
join the Co-op and are non-refundable after the teachers meeting or two weeks prior to
the first day of Co-op classes, whichever comes first. Individual class fees vary and are
for each enrolled student; they are also non-refundable after the teachers meeting or
two weeks prior to the first day of Co-op classes, whichever comes first. When registering
for classes, your childrens ages will be based on their ages as of October 1 for the fall
semester and February 1 for the spring semester.
2. Class Structure and Teacher ResponsibilitiesAll classes must be approved by
the Board of Directors. Once approved, each teacher is responsible for setting his or her
own fees and making sure that his or her classes will be covered in case of absence.
When setting fees, teachers should try to keep fees as low as possible and keep records
of expenditures (including receipts) to turn in to the Board at the end of the semester.
Any supplies purchased with class fees are for class use only. Any non-consumable
materials purchased with class fee funds should be turned in to the Board at the end of
each semester for use in future classes. Also, when planning classes, teachers should
take into consideration if they will be missing weeks. Co-teachers should be up to the
task if the teacher will be out during scheduled Co-op meetings. Finally, to minimize
difficulties in creating semester class schedules, all teachers must commit to being
available for all three class hours of Co-op. SFHC meets each Thursday of the regular
semesters at Journey Fellowship Church in Lacombe.
3. Discipline Policy and Behavior PlanIn an effort to keep Slidell Family
Homeschoolers Co-op safe and running smoothly, we ask that all family members who
will be participating in Co-op abide by the discipline policy and behavior plan of SFHC.
Please see page 15 to review the discipline policy and to sign the behavior contract.
a. Discipline Policy: 3 Strikes System
i. At first disruption, you will be warned by your teacher and your parent will
be notified.
ii. At second disruption, you will be asked to sit with the Board Members on
duty and will have to stay there for the remainder of the class until your
teacher dismisses you.
iii. At third disruption, you may be asked to leave the Co-op.
iv. If a childs actions result in the injury of another member or members of
the Co-op, the families involved will need to meet with the Board of
Directors to determine an appropriate course of action.

b. Student Responsibilities: CPR

i. Care: Help take care of our building. Clean up after yourself. Be careful to
use indoor actions and voices. Show a caring attitude toward everyone at
Co-op.
ii. Participate: Be an active student in your classes. Ask questions. Answer
questions. Keep technology and toys in your backpack during class time.
iii. Respect: Be respectful of the classroom and class property. Give the
teacher all of your attention during class time. Only one person should
speak at a time. Be respectful to everyone at Co-op.
c. Parents Responsibilities:
i. Parent(s) will be expected to speak with a teacher who has sent their child
to the Board Members on duty.
ii. It is the parents responsibility to ensure that their children adhere to the
behavior contract and to oversee the behavior of all children, including
those too young to write their names.
iii. Parents are solely responsible for their children during lunch break, in
between classes, and before and after co-op as well as during any field
trips, park days, or other events sponsored by SFHC.
4. Supply List and BackpackPlease provide the items below on the supply list for
each of your children ages 4 and up (younger siblings in the Preschool Program will have
a different supply list). Label all items that come to Co-op with your childs first name and
last initial (including supplies, wipes, extra clothes, lunch boxes, etc.). These items
should be brought to Co-op on a weekly basis.
a. Backpack or bag to carry materials
b. Pens and/or pencils
c. Notebook paper
d. Folder with pockets (for class handouts)
e. Crayons
f. Colored pencils
g. Washable markers
h. Child-safe scissors
i.

Gluestick and regular glue

5. NametagsAll children (ages 4 and up) and adults are required to wear nametags
while at Co-op. The childrens nametags will identify the childs name, class schedule,
and any other pertinent information, such as allergies and emergency contact
information. Adult nametags will list their names and emergency contact information.
Children will wear nametags on a lanyard. Adults may wear lanyards or a clip-on badge
reel. The last hour teachers will collect the childrens lanyards so that we can store them
at the Co-op location. Set-up volunteers will ensure they are available for children each
Co-op day. Adults are responsible for their own nametags.

6. Pertinent Child Information Taken at RegistrationYou are asked upon

registration to provide any pertinent information about your child. This information can
include allergies, food intolerances, chronic illnesses, medications, special needs, etc.
Only the MOST pertinent of information (such as life-threatening allergies) will be listed
on your childs nametag. However, it would be helpful if you would share any other
information such as special needs like autism, diabetes, etc. This will allow us to better
work with your child and be aware of any special considerations we need to make
concerning lessons, activities, etc. You are not required to share this information. Only
share what you feel would better your familys experience in the Co-op. Many of us have
children with special needs and chronic illnesses or disabilities, and we want your
experience with the Co-op to be the best!
7. Medication PolicyParents are responsible for administering any childrens
medications that are necessary during Co-op hours. If the medicine is known to cause
any adverse reactions, alert your childs teacher to that. Except in extenuating
circumstances, please do NOT leave any medicines in backpacks, diaper bags, or purses
where children can gain access. If your child MUST have his or her own medicine with
him or her at all times (such as an inhaler or EpiPen), parents must notify the teacher
and discuss usage instructions.
8. NurseryA nursery is available for children 2 and under whose parents are teaching or
co-teaching. It is also available for parents who need a quiet place to bring their babies
to nurse, rest, etc.
9. VolunteeringSFHC simply cannot operate without everyone volunteering in some
manner in at least two volunteer roles. Any parent not in an assigned role at any given
time may be called on to assist in a class or elsewhere.
a. TeachersTeachers design, plan, and implement a class for one semester at a
time. All classes are approved by the Board.
b. Co-teachersCo-teachers assist the teacher in class and lead the class when the
primary teacher is absent. Co-teachers and substitute teachers are also
responsible for leading children from class to class to keep hallways as quiet as
possible during transition times.
c. Nursery VolunteersNursery helpers watch the babies and toddlers and handle
any feeding and playing needs. Nursery helpers will NOT diaper a child. Only
parents may diaper their own children. This policy also applies to our preschool
teachers and preschool students. Any diapering or assistance with wiping in the
bathroom must be done by that childs parents. The ten minutes between classes
and lunch time are perfect opportunities for a quick change or bathroom run!
Nursery helpers for the 10:00 hour need to arrive at 9:45 to allow teachers to
prepare.

d. Set-up VolunteersSix set-up volunteers will prepare the building for Co-op
classes by turning on any lights, setting out nametags, and verifying tables and
chairs are set up in classrooms and the lunch room. Teachers set up their own
classrooms, but the set-up volunteers should transport tables and chairs and help
teachers when done with initial set-up. Two people should watch the children of
the set-up volunteers while the other four set up. Set-up should be completed by
9:50 a.m. in order for the first class to begin on time. In case of absence, a set-up
volunteer must alert fellow volunteers and find someone to take his or her place if
necessary.
e. Clean-up VolunteersSix clean-up volunteers will break down any initial set-up,
pick up nametags, turn off lights, and do any necessary cleaning, such as wiping
tables, sweeping, vacuuming, cleaning the bathroom, etc. Two people should
watch the children of the clean-up volunteers while the other four clean. In case
of absence, a clean-up volunteer must alert fellow volunteers and find someone
to take his or her place if necessary.
f. Lunch HelpersThese volunteers will help keep an eye on the outdoor play area
during lunchtime, monitor childrens behavior, keep children from littering, and
verify all children are present and return inside in time to clean up for their last
classes. They will also help clean the lunchroom once lunch has ended.
g. Substitute TeachersEach class will have two designated substitute teachers. In
case of the absence of either the lead teacher or co-teacher, these volunteers
should be familiar enough with the class to help teach.
10. Field TripsPart of the fun of joining SFHC is attending the monthly field trips. These
will always be made as a Facebook Event in order to keep track of attendance. Some
trips will require advance payment. Members will be notified ahead of time as to the
specifics of the field trip.
a. Field Trips are on the second Friday of every month unless otherwise noted in the
calendar.
b. Both members and non-members may attend field trips and receive any
discounted rates we receive. Non-Members will ONLY be allowed to attend if a
member vouches for them. If pre-payment is required to attend the field trip, nonmembers MUST pre-pay as well.
c. Families will have the option to purchase a SFHC T-shirt to wear on field trips. One
of our students, Nathan Lorenzen, created a beautiful logo for us to use. While it
is not required that you order a T-shirt, it is strongly recommended. When it is
time to order T-shirts, we will post ordering information in the SFHC Members-Only
Facebook Group.
d. Please notice that the behavior contract includes students behaviors on field
trips. Often we will have the opportunity to visit some great museums and other
locations where proper behavior is expected. We would like to present a positive
image for our Co-op and maintain great relationships with all these locations for
future field trip possibilities.
8

11. Set SchedulesSFHC will have two regular semesters per calendar year: one fall
semester and one spring semester.
a. Registration will be held at least 3 weeks prior to the start of the semester.
b. Registration (including class changes) ends by the second week of classes, as
space allows.
c. Fall semester begins the first Thursday after Labor Day.
d. Spring semester begins the first Thursday of February.
e. Each semester will include 12 weeks of classes and a final week for a party.
f. Proposed classes are due to the Board of Directors eight weeks prior to
registration.
12. Board of DirectorsThe Board of Directors meets monthly (typically on the first
Friday) to plan and prepare for classes, registrations, events, etc. They serve to handle
policies and procedures and ensure the Co-op runs smoothly and all members are
participating equally. They will also delegate responsibilities for extra activities and
events to other SFHC members. At least one Board member will be off each hour to
handle any issues that may arise during the weekly Co-op classes.
13. CommunicationsMost SFHC communication will be handled via the SFHC MembersOnly Facebook Group. This is the easiest way to communicate throughout the entire
membership and is strongly encouraged. If a member is unable to access Facebook, he
or she needs to discuss this with the Board and discuss alternate options.

SLIDELL FAMILY HOMESCHOOLERS CO-OP

ILLNESS POLICY
Although we meet only once per week, illnesses do happen. We ask that you adhere to these
illness policies to ensure the spreading of illness is minimized. Please keep your child home
in the event of these illnesses. Also be sure to alert one of the Directors and find
replacements for each of your Co-op tasks.
1. Fever of over 101If your child has had fever, they should be fever-free for 24
hours before returning to Co-op, field trips, or other activities. Mild fever due to
teething in infants is up to parental discretion.
2. Vomiting and DiarrheaVomiting and diarrhea due to illness is often highly
contagious. If your child is vomiting or has diarrhea, please keep him or her home. If
your child begins to vomit or have diarrhea while at Co-op, you will be alerted to
remove your child. If you are a teacher, a substitute will take your place. If your child
has been vomiting or has had diarrhea during the week prior to Co-op, please ensure
your child has been free of it for at least 24 hours prior to returning to Co-op.
3. Coughs and ColdsThese are a normal occurrence of childhood, but we
understand this can be allergies. While we know the symptoms a child exhibits can
varyincluding some less-than-appealing symptoms such as green, mucousy
dischargewe also know not every symptom is a sign of a contagious illness. If your
child has a history of allergies and non-contagious illnesses, please let your childs
teachers know.
4. RashesRashes are another aspect of childhood that can appear suddenly and
without warning. Some rashes are mild and allergic in nature, while others can be a
sign of a more serious illness. If your child has a rash during Co-op, he or she will be
brought to you for clarification. If your child gets a recurring, non-contagious rash,
please just alert your childs teacher to that.
5. LiceIt is possible that a child who attends the Co-op will get lice. Contrary to
popular myth, having lice is not a sign of being filthy and dirty. Lice are common and
relatively harmless. They can be difficult to get rid of, and a variety of methods to do
so can be found online. If it is discovered your child has lice while at Co-op, we will
very discreetly alert you and ask you to leave. We will have to alert the other Co-op
members that there has been an occurrence of lice, but we will never identify the
family affected. Please ensure your child is nit- and egg-free before returning to Coop. To minimize the possibility of lice, remind your child not to share hats,
headbands, hair accessories, or dress-up clothes.
6. AllergiesIf your child has life-threatening allergies, you must alert us during
registration. Allergies will be noted on the childrens nametags so that all teachers
are aware of any special concerns. Please verify the emergency contact information
on your childs nametag is correct. If your child requires something like an EpiPen,
please alert the Directors, as well as your childs teachers, so that an emergency plan
can be worked out.
10

7. ImmunizationsPlease be aware that NOT every family in the Co-op vaccinates

their children for a variety of reasons. Vaccinations are not required by Louisiana
state law for entry into public schools, and we follow that same policy. If you DO NOT
vaccinate your child, you are taking responsibility that should an illness or outbreak
occur, your family will NOT be allowed to return until the outbreak has passed. You do
not need to identify yourself as non-vaccinating. Please also be aware that at any
given time we could have pregnant women who are more susceptible to certain
illnesses. Please use caution when returning to the Co-op after any contagious
illness. If your family does get vaccinations, please note that children can have
reactions such as soreness, fever, and rashes after an immunization. Please alert
your childs teacher if they recently received an immunization.

Regarding illnesses: When in doubt, sit it out!

11

SLIDELL FAMILY HOMESCHOOLERS CO-OP

EMERGENCY POLICY
In the event of an emergency, the following procedures will be followed.
1. Accidents/IncidentsAs careful as we try to be, accidents and incidents do occur.
When your child has an accident or is involved in an incident, you will be alerted.
When an accident results in bleeding, broken skin, head injury, vomiting, or any other
serious injury, an accident form will be completed. If the injury is the result of a
childs behavior, the behavior plan will be followed. (See Discipline Policy and
Behavior Contract on pages 4-6.) Parents can request that a report be filled out for
any accidents or incidents that occur during Co-op hours.
2. Bad Weather/School ScheduleAs a general rule, we follow the St. Tammany
Parish School Boards policy on bad weather and school closures. Please visit
www.stpsb.org, and you will find options to have emergency alerts phoned or texted
to you. You can also find their calendar for holidays. If we choose to close for bad
weather or any other reason when the public schools are open, we will announce it
via the SFHC Members-Only Facebook Group. Please keep a copy of our Calendar of
Events since we do have several breaks each semester.
3. Emergency Plan for Sudden Weather or CatastropheShould we find
ourselves surrounded by severe and dangerous weather while at the Co-op, we will
follow any parish and city recommendations. Please visit here
http://stpgov.org/departments/homeland-security-emergency-preparedness to sign
up for emergency alerts and preparedness information. We will also follow the
procedures of the facility in which we meet. The Board members and teachers will be
aware of fire escape plans and other emergency plans. Teachers and co-teachers will
lead all children in their care out of the building by proper exits or to the appropriate
sheltered areas. Parents are required to follow the buildings escape plans to exit or
take shelter as quickly as possible and leave their children in the care of the
teachers. This will reduce chaos in a difficult situation.
4. Emergency Contact, Leaving Children, and AttendanceSFHC is NOT a
drop-off program. You MUST remain on the premises at all times with your child. You
are considered the emergency contact for your child, and your immediate contact
information will be listed on the childs nametag.
a. Attendance is taken at the beginning of every class, including nursery and
preschool classes. Every teacher and co-teacher will keep an ongoing
headcount of the children in their classes. Please do NOT remove your child
from class without alerting the teacher.

12

b. There is always one in-charge person at every scheduled Co-op class day or
event. This person will make any necessary emergency decisions and
delegate responsibilities to SFHC Directors and teachers.
c. SFHC is not a drop-off program, so you are responsible for your child
throughout the entirety of the Co-op day. We realize that in some instances
another parent may take your child home after classes. SFHC Board does not
get involved in these arrangements. We also understand that in some cases
there could be a custody issue between parents. Please note that if there is a
non-custodial parent listed on the birth certificate, then they have a legal right
to take your child unless you provide legal documents otherwise. We would, of
course, be monitoring and questioning any unfamiliar person around the
children and alerting you of any issues. If you have any concerns or issues
involving custody or similar issues, please alert the Board of Directors so they
can be aware and inform your childs teachers of any important issues.

All policies are effective as of January 9, 2015.

These policies and procedures have been reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors
of the Slidell Family Homeschoolers Co-op. Policies and Procedures will be reviewed semiannually and updated as necessary.
