1.

Be familiar with the Course Requirements and the Key Terms used at NTU
Programme refers to the field of study or the Major that you are admitted into: e.g.,
Chinese, Economics, English, History, Psychology, Philosophy, Public Policy and
Global Affairs, Linguistics and Multilingual Studies or Sociology.
Each programme in HSS requires that you complete a distribution of courses, which
are
individual
modules.
Visit
the
HSS
website
at
http://www.hss.ntu.edu.sg/Pages/Home.aspx for the course requirements for the
Major offered by your Division. Students admitted to NTU since 2011 are following
the new BRC curriculum.
You can also opt to take up a Minor (or up to 2 Minors) in another discipline in HSS
or any other School. The Minor allows you to pursue your other interests or to
complement your Major. A Minor typically requires completion of 5 courses in the
chosen discipline.
Each course carries weights called Academic Units (AUs); each course typically
makes up either 3 or 4 AUs.
To graduate, students must complete a minimum number of AUs. With effect from
2011, all HSS freshmen will require 126 AUs to graduate.
Each course consists of 2 sets of requirements:

Courses you must take to fulfill your Major.

Courses you take under NTUs General Education Requirements

(GER), which introduce you to courses beyond your specialization.

There are 3 types of courses:

Core courses (C) i.e. compulsory courses. There are Major-Core

courses and GER-Core courses.

2.

Prescribed Electives (PEs) i.e. a pre-determined list of courses that you

can choose to meet the requirements for your Major or GER. There
are Major-PEs and GER-PEs.

General or Unrestricted Electives (UEs) i.e. courses that can be

selected from any School. These can be courses to meet your GER or
your Minor requirements.

The Courses You Have to Take in Semester 1 2014/2015

The normal load for Year 1 students is 5 courses per semester, which is the maximum.
You can take one more course in your first semester to make it 6 courses, but this will be
subject to case-by-case approval from your Division.
When you matriculate, you will find that for Semester 1, you have been pre-registered
for 2, 3, 4 or 5 courses depending on your Major, and your time-table for these courses
have been fixed (you are not allowed to drop or reschedule). The courses are:

Registering for Courses during the Add/Drop Period

The Add/Drop Period will be from 11 August to 24 August 2014, 10 am to
10 pm daily.
During this period, you may wish to register additional courses
from a combination of any of the following:

GER-Prescribed Electives (GER-PEs)

GER- Unrestricted Electives (UEs)

For a list of all courses (contents and pre-requisites) offered in these categories, visit:
https://wis.ntu.edu.sg/webexe/owa/aus_subj_cont.main

GER-Prescribed Electives (GER-PE)

HSS students admitted in 2014 are required to complete 5 GER-PE courses
distributed over 3 categories:

1 from General Education in Liberal Arts (LA)

1 from General Education in Science, Technology and Society (STS)
1 from General Education in Business and Management (BM)
Remaining 2 from any of the 3 above categories
2

You can fulfill these requirements at any time during your undergraduate studies in
NTU.
Students with Polytechnic Diplomas are eligible for exemptions from up to 2 of the
GER-PEs above. The School will be getting in touch with the Polytechnic graduates
on the details of the exemptions.
GER-Unrestricted (General) Electives (UE)
You can choose any General Elective that has no prerequisite.
Note that some General Electives go towards fulfilling the requirements of a Minor.
If you wish to obtain a Minor in another discipline, check out the Minor requirements.
Minor
For information on all the Minors offered in NTU, please visit:
http://www.ntu.edu.sg/Services/Academic/undergraduates/academicprogrammes/Pages/
MinorProgramme.aspx
Minor courses are to be registered as General/Unrestricted Electives.
Second Major
You will receive an invitation to read a 2nd Major only at the end of your 1st year of
studies and only on condition that you perform sufficiently well in your 1st Year.

4.

Normal Load and Overload

Normal Load would mean reading 5 per semester for Year 1s. Overloading means
reading more than 5 courses in a semester for Year 1s. The registration system will
allow you to register a maximum of 5 courses. In excess of that you will need the
Divisions approval. You will be prompted when you register as to whether you have
exceeded the allowable overload.

5.

Planning and Preparing for Registration

Registration is done through the Student Automated Registration System (STARS)
Planner. You can only access the STARS Planner from 11 August 2014 to 24
August 2013.

Before 11 August 2014, plan the courses you would like to take.
Step 1.

Check out the content of courses offered in Semester 1 at the following

website: Content of Courses
For example for the list GER-PEs offered in each of the three categories,
scroll down to General Education in [e.g. Business and Management],
select, and click on Load Contents of Courses. You may, in the same
way, view courses offered for any of the Minors.
Make a list of courses you would like to take, noting the course code.
Choose courses that do not have any pre-requisites.

Step 2.

Print a copy of the examination time-table at the following website:

Exam Timetable
Make sure that the courses you have selected in Step 1 do not clash with
the exam time of your pre-registered courses.

Step 3.

Check out the class schedule of courses offered in Semester 1:

Class Schedule
Lectures and different tutorial groups are assigned index numbers. Select
classes that do not clash with your pre-registered courses. Take note of the
index number. You need it to register.
Course code is used to identify a particular course. For example, HE1001
is the course code for the module Microeconomic Principles.
Index Number is a 5-digit number used for course registration purposes.
It identifies that particular combination of lecture group + tutorial group
that you must attend if you register for its corresponding index number.
Note: You will get the time-table of your pre-registered courses only when
you matriculate.

Step 4.

Finally, familiarize yourself with STARS PLANNER. You may download

information from the following website:
STARS & STARS Planner User Guide

6.

Upon Your Matriculation on 30 July 1 August 2014

7.

After you matriculate, print a copy of the time-table of your pre-registered

courses.
