ENGINEERING 6713
Fall 2010
Hydraulics

Objective:

To increase knowledge on the application of basic hydraulic principles to the

analysis and design of pipelines, pumping, and open channel flow systems.
The principles learned are useful for both the flow of water as well as any other
fluids.

Faculty:

Dr. Leonard M. Lye, Professor and Associate Dean (Graduate Studies)

Room EN 4036, Tel: 864-8900, Email: llye@mun.ca.

TA:

Ms. Shabnam Mostofi Zadeh

Procedure:

Material will be covered by lectures, laboratory demonstrations, and tutorial

problems. Students are expected to read the notes and/or texts and tutorials
thoroughly.

Laboratory:

Laboratory demonstrations will be carried out as needed. Some labs may be

computer labs. Online software Excel may be used.

Evaluation:

There will be two (2) midterm tests, 2 assignments, and a final exam. Material

covered on the tests and exam will include all handouts, assignments, lecture
notes, outside readings, and laboratory work. All work must be your own.
Marks will be distributed as follows:

Tutorials:

Tutorials problems are given out during the start of the term. It is important that
you work out each problem by yourself without looking at the solutions. Do not
deny yourself the joy of self-discovery!!

Absences:

If you are absent from a test or exam, it is your responsibility to contact me

regarding make-up or a grade of 0 will be assigned for the missed test or exam.

Text:

Main text is the same as Engineering 5713 or any book in Fluid

Mechanics or Hydraulics that you can beg or borrow.

Optional supplementary material and software: These will be posted on the course website at
www.engr.mun.ca/~llye/Hydraulics. Check this website for tutorial problems and
solutions, assignments, and other goodies.
Good luck - you may need it!
