PROJECT INITIATION - REVIEW SU,:'.ARY

PnOJ^CT TITLE: riung Beans

TECN`,ICr;L OBJECTIVE: To define optimal conditions for the commercial production of mung
bean sprouts.

VALUE: Since mung bean sprouts constitute a major portion of the contents of Chung King
products, and since factory yields of sprouts are erratic, improved yields would mean a
significant savings in factory costs.

PROGRESS; STATUS: Good progress has been made in defining the optimum growth conditions.
Sev^r
- aT-critical factors have been identified and are now under study.

TcCf:NICt;L 03J`C`,-:!'S: To develop and evaluate a machine which will expose experimental animals
to cigarette smoke in a manner which simulates human smoking as nearly as possible.

VALUE: Primarily defensive. If a "standard" set of conditions for exposing experimental

animals to smoke can receive general acceptance in the scientific community, there would be
fewer spectacular, anti-cigarette studies reported in which wholly unrealistic smoking
conditions were employed.
PROCPESS; SinMUS: The RJR machine shows signs of being one of the best designs to the present
time. Several improvements are contemplated and will be incorporated as fast as possible.

a compound can be sold for commercial.purposes.
VALUE: The identification and characterization of useful properties of chemical compounds.
could provide new business opportunities for the Company.
