Should have hot

and cold running
water

Must be clean

The
Water
Supply

Not be mixed
chemistry with
water that has a
very high chlorine
content.

Must be reliable

If too slow, and the

tap is open, there
may be partial
bloackage, or
maybe low pressure
of water.

Water
Flow
Test
Takes only 15 minute
to make four changes
in one hour.

adjust water flow

accordingly.

Cleaning the
Tanks

Drain the developer and fixer tanks.

Ensure that chemistry and contaminated water

disposed in safe manner.

Wash the tank. Use different brush pad for

developer and fixer.

At Start Up ( Daily )

Feed a 35 x 43 cm waste unprocessed film into the processor to clean any deposit in rollers.
Ti may be necessary to feed in a second film if you feel it is necessary.
Do not use processed film as this will be too hard and may contain redisual fixer.
Do not proceed with the daily workload until you are satisfied to rollers you clean.
At Shut Down
Remove or clean all crossover rollers or plates.
Wipe off chemicals deposits on or around the processor. take special care with film feedtray

Developer
It affects the density, contrast and amount of base fog of a radiograph.
Fixer

Developer/Fixer Tank

Dissolves all unwanted film emulsion.

Makes image permanent
Temperature and fixing time is not critical as developer.

Stir the tank before use

Check the tank temperature
Adjust the temperature to pre
determined standard if necessary
Check if their is a leakage in the tank
The film storage must be away from the
tank.

Developer Activity Test Using pH Paper ( Litmus Paper )

Can be used for freshly mixed developer. But is more useful to show contamination or
oxidation

Hold a strip of test

paper in develepoer
approximately 10
seconds

observe colour change

Compare with control

strip.

Evaluation:
a.
b.
c.
d.
e.

Note manufacturers recommended pH range ( usually around 10.0 10.5

)
Compare test strip to recommended range.
A reading of more than .4 below manufacturers recommendation suggests contamination.
Reading below .8 suggest oxidation.
Replace developer if reading is too high or low.

Fixer activity using Hydrometer test

Specific gravity of the fixer is in the region of .004 ( see manufacturers
recommendation )

Place
hydrometer in
fixer tank

Note the
reading at the
surface of the
fixer

A high specific
garavity reading
means not
dilute enough.

A low specific
gravity reading
means too
dilute

1. Film Hangers.

It must be check everyday

Must be different size and shape for different film size.

Larger hanger sizes have loop guides to hold the bow spring and top clips in
line and maintain proper tension
Be sure that the hangers dont have any damage

Must be quality strong stainless steel construction that will last for year
Report if damage is spotted.

2. Darkroom Luminous Interval Timer

Interval timer is important to control the time of development and fixation

Developer is 68 - 70= 5 minutes.

Optimal for most films.

Developer is 64 - 66 = 7 minutes

Depending on
temperature of
developer

Developer is 72- 76 = 4 minutes

If the result is inconsistent, you can check

your timer.

3. Darkroom Thermometer

Radiographic

it is recommended that only a digital

thermometer be used.

Darkroom

Avoid the use of a glass thermometer

as they are easily broken in the
processor.

Thermometer

NEVERuse a thermometer that

contains mercury since the mercury
is photographic contaminant.

4. Darkroom Mixing Paddle

Separate paddles or agitators should be
provided for the developer and fixer. If the
paddles are washed thoroughly and hung
up to dry immediately after use, the danger
of contamination when they are employed
again will be virtually nil

. A motor-driven stirrer with a stainless

steel propeller is a convenient aid in mixing
solutions. In any event, the agitation used in
mixing processing solutions should be
vigorous and complete, but not violent.

Paddles or plunger-type agitators are

practical for stirring solutions. They should
be made of hard rubber, stainless steel, or
some other material that does not absorb
or react with processing solutions.
