approaches, Im nervous. But after my maid of honor gently pins my satintrimmed veil into my hair, I step out onto the lanai overlooking Sunset Beach

immediate sense of tranquility. Who could feel anxious in one of the most
beautiful places on Earth?
When my father comes to fetch me for our walk down the rose-petalstrewn aisle set up on a lawn above the beach, Im ready. All the details have

I make our way past my closest friends and family. At the end of the aisle awaits my soon-to-be husband,
Joel, wearing a white silk aloha shirt and a traditional maile lei. Standing alongside him is a local kahu

An hour later, as husband and wife, we toast to our marriage, as the spectacular sunset the beach is
named for paints the sky with hues of rose, violet and gold.

we had so many fond memories
of vacationing together in the
islands during the five years
before we wedincluding hiking
the rugged 11-mile Kalalau Trail

Many other couples from the
mainland, and around the world,
choose Hawaii as the locale for
their ceremonies, too. According to the Hawaii State Department of Health, of
the 22,872 marriages conducted in the islands in 2009, 61 percent were
between nonresidents.
Much like us, some couples plan a destination wedding in Hawaii because,
after spending time in the Aloha State, it is near and dear to their hearts. Other
couples have never been to Hawaii, but choose to get married in the islands
because of the year-round sunny weather; beautiful, diverse scenery; and convenience of planning a ceremony from a distance in a state where wedding

are so abundant.
With todays technology, backed by a long list of
talented wedding professionals, planning a Hawaiian Island wedding from afar has never been easier,
says Christina Farrow, founder and president of
Pacific Aisles, a company that specializes in planning weddings throughout Hawaii.
An additional benefit is the ease of traveling for
guests, since Hawaii is only about a five-hour flight

Plan ahead: Many wedding professionals advise that you begin the planning
process a year in advance.
Choose your date: Venues will be more difficult (and, often, more costly) to
book at certain times of the year, including late spring and summer. According
to Denise Black, a wedding manager at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea,
other busy times include holidays (such as Christmas and Valentines Day),
spring break and dates significant in numerology, such as 11/1/11 and 11/11/11.
Consider your budget: Figuring out from the outset how much money you
want to spend on your wedding will help streamline the planning process. As is
true for any event locale, you can plan a Hawaii wedding in any price range.
One consideration of a destination wedding is the cost of airfare and lodging
for your guests. Alaska Airlines offers discounts off the lowest available fare for
guests attending your special day, for parties of 10 or more; you can find more
information at www.alaskaair.com. Many resorts also offer discounts on rooms
booked for wedding guests.
Get a marriage license: Couples must apply together, in person, for their marriage license. Some marriage-license offices and agents are open only Monday
Friday (some are closed on Friday); others require an appointment. Once the
$60 license is issued, there is no waiting period, like there is in some states,
before the ceremony can take place. Visit www.hawaii.gov/health/vital-records/
vital-records/marriage/index.html to download the license application.

Mind the rules: Private venues often have specific rules, regulations and
requirements regarding permits and insurance. Having an experienced wedding
planner by your side will help you make sense of it all, says Christina Farrow,
founder and president of wedding-planning company Pacific Aisles. Also, use of
many of Hawaiis beautiful, all-public beaches requires a right-of-entry permit
from the state. For information on obtaining a permit to hold a beach ceremony,

bride and groom also have the convenience
of island hopping for their honeymoon, if
they choose.
And, of course, there is Hawaiis undeniable romantic allure. When you consider the clear skies, crystal-blue water,
beautiful sandy beaches, swaying coconut
trees and starlit nights, its no wonder
Hawaii is considered one of the most
romantic places on Earth, Farrow says.
The striking settings in which to hold a
wedding in Hawaii range from elegant
resorts to lush parks and botanical gardens, to the states sandy, all-public
beaches. Such diversity offers couples
plenty of options for finding a site that
suits their tastes and budgets.

legendary Hana Highwayan approximately 50-mile road that twists and turns
through lush scenery to connect central
Maui with the quaint town of Hana on
the islands east shore.
After a romantic overnight stay at the
serene Hotel Hana-Maui, Eric tucked a
bottle of champagne into his backpack,
and the couple set out to hike the Ppwai

destination was the nearly 200-foot-tall

the cascade, Eric presented a diamond ring

Delightfully Unexpected.
Truly Unforgettable.

The couple agreed that they wanted to

plan a destination wedding somewhere
tropical and that Maui was the natural
choice. In addition to getting engaged on
the island, both had treasured memories of
vacationing there with friends and family.
With that decision made, the next step was
deciding on a venue. Eric and Krissys short
list of desired criteriaa beautiful setting
not directly on the beach, but on a lawn
right above it, with gorgeous sunset and
ocean viewsled them to the Wailea area
and the luxurious Four Seasons Resort.
The Four Seasons is amazing, Eric
says. Every pebble on the ground looks
polished and perfect.
Eric and Krissy worked with Denise
Black, a wedding manager at the Four
Seasons, to plan the ceremony, communicating with her via regular phone calls
and e-mail exchanges. Black walked
them through every step of the planning
processfrom picking out table linens to
the cake selection via a private tasting.
When I have my initial conversation
with a bride, I say, Give me your dream
scenario, says Black. The next thing I
ask about is the budget. Then I work with
the couple to make the dream a reality.
Maybe some things are more important
to them than others, and we can spend
less money in one category and put it
toward another.
With most of the details arranged
before their trip, Eric and Krissy spent
several days leading up to their wedding
having fun with the 45 friends and family
members who flew out for the ceremony,
through activities such as zip-lining, kayaking and a luau.
Some of the couples guests stayed next
door to the Four Seasons at the Grand
Wailea, where Eric and Krissy arranged a
special group rate. Another popular Maui
resort for weddings, the Grand Wailea is
home to the Seaside Chapelan intimate
setting featuring colorful stained-glass
murals depicting scenes of traditional
Hawaiian life, created by local artist
Yvonne Cheng. In addition to holding their

some pre-wedding pampering.
Thanks to Blacks meticulous planning,
Eric and Krissys wedding went off without
a hitch. Held just before sunset, the ceremony began with a lei exchange honoring
family and friends, and the blowing of a
conch shelltwo Native traditions.
The guests stood for Krissys grand
entrance to Pachelbels Canon in D, performed by a solo violinist. A vision in a
drop-waist mermaid dress and an elegant
birdcage veil, Krissy was escorted by her
brother down a staircase from the hotels
adult-only infinity-edge pool to the oceanview lawn where the ceremony was taking
place.
She looked beautiful. Our eyes locked
through the crowd, says Eric.
Once the couple was pronounced husband and wife, they enjoyed a cocktail
reception with their guests, followed by a
seated dinner catered by the resort and
dancing to a four-piece quartet.
I was a calm, happy bride, because all

Thats exactly Denise Blacks goal. The
Four Seasons only hosts one wedding ceremony per day, so the bride truly is the
focus of our attention, she says. We offer
small, intimate dream weddings in a beau-

tiful, magical place that is like nowhere else

on Earth.
Hawaiis magnificent resorts span all of
the islands, with many offering wedding
packages that simplify the process of planning a ceremony and reception by providing a bride and groom with everything
they need. The Yonkers, for instance, chose
the Four Seasons Plumeria Wedding Package, which included the services of an
officiant, Krissys bouquet, a solo musician
for the ceremony, two hours with a wedding photographer and Blacks services.
Black provided the Yonkers with a list of
preferred photographers and other vendors
to choose from. She also worked with the
couple to personalize their weddingfor
example, by making sure guests had a CD
of Hawaiian music waiting in their rooms
upon arrival and overseeing the construction of a bamboo cross for the ceremony.
Selecting a hotel and a package can be
one of the most difficult parts of the planning process, because the options are so
numerous. Following are a few examples of

For some couples, the appeal of working

the opportunity to design a truly customized wedding experience. For example, Joel

use a small, local catering business specializing in kalua pork and other traditional
