Hepatoprotective Activity

Statement of the Problem:

1. What are the Pre-test and Post-test mean levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT)
in the silymarin-treated hepatotoxic albino rats?
Table 1. Pre-test and Post-test mean levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in the
silymarin-treated hepatotoxic albino rats

The table above showed that the mean pre-test level of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in
the silymarin-treated hepatotoxic albino rats was 75.0356 U/L while the mean post-test levels of
alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in the silymarin-treated hepatotoxic albino rats was only
30.3233 U/L.
2. What are the Pre-test and Post-test mean levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT)
in the camachile leaf extract treated hepatotoxic albino rats using the following
doses:
a. 250 mg/kg
b. 500 mg/kg
c. 750 mg/kg
Table 2. Pre-test mean levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in the 250mg/kg,
500mg/kg, and 750mg/kg Camachile-treated hepatotoxic albino rats

The table above showed that the mean pre-test level of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in
the Camachile-treated hepatotoxic albino rats were the following: for 250mg/kg was 88.0311
U/L; 500mg/kg was 102.1422; and for 750mg/kg was 94.0578.

Table 3. Post-test mean levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in the 250mg/kg,

500mg/kg, and 750mg/kg Camachile-treated hepatotoxic albino rats

The table above showed that the mean post-test level of alanine aminotransferase (ALT)
in the Camachile-treated hepatotoxic albino rats were the following: for 250mg/kg was 31.6122
U/L; 500mg/kg was 34.9289 U/L; and for 750mg/kg was 30.0189 U/L.
The post-test levels were significantly lower compared to the pre-test levels.

3. Is there a significant difference on the mean level of alanine aminotransferase (

ALT) between the silymarin treated hepatotoxic albino rats and the camachile leaf
extract treated heatotoxic albino rats using the following doses:
a. 250 mg/kg
b. 500 mg/kg
c. 750 mg/kg
Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to determine if significant difference existed
for the mean level of alanine aminotransferase ( ALT) between the silymarin treated hepatotoxic
albino rats and the camachile leaf extract-treated heatotoxic albino rats using the doses of
250mg/kg, 500 mg/kg, and 750 mg/kg.
Significant difference existed if significance (sig) is less than 0.05.

Table 4. ANOVA Table: Significant Difference in the mean level of alanine

aminotransferase (ALT)

Results above showed that there is no significant difference (sig=0.960) between the
mean level of alanine aminotransferase ( ALT) in silymarin-treated hepatotoxic albino rats and
the camachile leaf extract-treated heatotoxic albino rats using the doses of 250mg/kg, 500 mg/kg,
and 750 mg/kg.
This no significant difference means that control groups and treatment groups have the
same effect when it comes to reducing the level alanine aminotransferase ( ALT). In other words,
3

the silymarin and camachile extracts of different doses have the same effects in the level of
alanine aminotransferase ( ALT).
