BELFAST

Ever wanted to visit the Game of Thrones

world? Now you can by touring locations
around Northern Ireland used in the show
Unless youve been living under a rock the
past five years, you wont have missed the
Game of Thrones phenomenon. Perhaps the
most popular fantasy TV series of all time, it
centres round the power struggle between
the various tribes of Westeros. Now fans of
the show can step into the realm of the Seven
Kingdoms by visiting Belfast one of our
newest destinations where the fifth season is
currently being filmed at Titanic Studios.
From the Northern Irish capital you can
visit a host of places that appear in the show,
such as dramatic Murlough Bay, the gorgeous
Antrim plateau where Ned Stark slew a Night
Watch deserter, and the Castle Ward estate

whose 16th-century ruins stand in for Winterfell;

here you can even take archery lessons in the
spot where Jon Snow taught Bran.
Tour companies have started to take
advantage of the Game of Thrones craze.
Brit Movie Tours (britmovietours.com) comes
particularly recommended with stops at seven
different locations. You can creep around
County Antrims Cushendun Caves where Lady
Melisandre gave birth to the shadow baby.
Or skulk beneath the eerie portico of trees, Dark
Hedges, near Armoy, known in the show as the
Kings Road. The tour weaves local legend with
Games of Thrones lore to the extent that, by the
end, you wont be sure whats fact or fiction.
Whether a fan of the show or not, you should
visit the UNESCO-listed Giants Causeway
and rugged coasts of Northern Ireland without
delay. After all, winter is coming.

Longest Black Run

Its hard to get going on the worlds

longest black from atop the Sarenne in Alpe
dHuez. Not only because youre peering over
the edge of a terrifying drop, but because the
vast panorama from up here is so spectacular.
Youll stand transfixed for a few moments
before you realise that youre shivering
after all, its pretty cold at the 3,330m
summit of Pic Blanc, where the run starts
at which point youll know its time to blast
downhill. Snow conditions at the top of the
Sarenne are almost always good, but soon

your thighs will start burning on this, the

most demanding part of the massive 16km
descent, so dont be afraid to pull over to
take in the extraordinary vista once again.
Way down below you can see the Gorges
de Sarenne, and if youre up early enough,
the high crags that surround you might have
chamois (mountain goats) leaping across
bare expanses of rock.
A little further down, the pitch of Sarenne
gradually eases, although as you continue
to descend, the lower stretches should be

classed more as red than blue. Once you

hit the tree-fringed Gorges de Sarenne, its
smooth and cruisey just as your aching
quads are crying out for a rest.
The Sarenne actually gets its black
status more from its length and vertical drop
than from any seriously steep declines or
treacherous moguls. So any adventurous
intermediate skiers should be able to
conquer it and enjoy the bragging rights of
completing the worlds longest black run.

LONDON

Cereal Oenders
Spoons at the ready Londons first
cereal cafe opens this December.
But will it be grrrrrreat?
Stuck in a breakfast rut? Get yourself down
to the Cereal Killer Cafe on Brick Lane,
East London, from 10 December. Set up by
identical twin brothers Gary and Alan Keery
from Northern Ireland, this unusual eatery
is offering just one thing: cereal. It will be
the UKs first restaurant dedicated to the
morning staple. We felt a cafe like this was
well overdue, says Gary. We love cereal and
wanted to celebrate it in a way that has never
been done before.
At this trendy cafe youll find more than
100 different cereals to choose from, with
options from Australia, the US, France, South
Africa and South Korea. The boys have 12

milk options (strawberry milk, anyone?),

20 toppings including fruit, marshmallows,
M&Ms and mini Oreos, and even 18 flavours
of Pop Tarts. Its a sugar-coated nostalgia trip
back to your childhood.
When I was a kid, I used to eat Banana
Bubbles, which are like banana-flavoured
Rice Krispies, says Gary. Sadly they were
discontinued in the 90s. The cafe does have
South Africa's Strawberry Pops, like strawberry
Rice Krispies, as well as hard-to-finds like
Oreo Os, once a popular global breakfast
treat, now only available in South Korea. Two
thirds of Brits eat cereal every morning, so
were hoping it will be a hit, he adds.
The cafe is open from 7am8pm every day.
Garys tip? Anything peanut butter-flavoured:
The peanut butter and chocolate Reeses
Puffs are my favourite. cerealkillercafe.co.uk

BUDAPEST

Feeding Time at the Zoo

We visited Budapests wildest new cafe,

where you can snuggle with a snake as
you eat some tasty cake
Im sitting sipping a cappuccino when,
unannounced, a yellow-crested cockatoo soars
through the air and lands on my companions
shoulder. She waits a moment before nibbling
at the button on his shirt. Kali is such a
flirt she loves the boys, laughs Krisztina
Balotay, owner of Budapests Zoo Cafe.
Chatting to Krisztina over squawking,
purring animals, she explains that she
opened this unusual venue in September. An

extension of the cat-cafe concept springing

up across Europe, Krisztinas locale is
home to a whole host of unusual critters. As
well as parrots, Kali the cockatoo and six
cats, there are hamsters, cats, hedgehogs,
snakes, lizards, spiders and an aquarium
filled with fish. Customers can get up-closeand-personal with most of the animals, as
long as they are respectful, and dont try
to feed them. We have a full-time animal
caretaker here who keeps a watchful eye on
all goings-on, says Krisztina while Kzmr
the chameleon clings round her neck.
Krisztina used to be the owner of the first

cat cafe in Budapest, but decided that she

could do something even more unusual. She
hunted around and found a large building
(123m2), and then set it up as the animals
new home, allowing them a few months to get
used to the space before the grand opening.
The animals are very friendly and the cafe
is a huge hit with kids. The snakes came
from a school, so theyre used to children
holding them, says Krisztina. We serve
paninis, wraps and cakes. Although food is
made off-site, the cafe kitchen is the only
place the animals arent allowed!

GERMANY

Magical
Markets
Youll find them all across Europe, but
the biggest and best German Christmas
markets are still to be found in their
native homeland. Heres our top three

DORTMUND
Fly to Dortmund
Go because: Dortmunds Christmas Market
has some impressive stats: not only does
it proudly stake claim to the worlds tallest
Christmas tree, standing 45m high (the top
4m is made up of a towering angel), it also
uses a whopping 48,000 lights to give it
that special festive glow. Looking for gifts?
You're spoilt for choice, there are some 300
stalls to peruse.
Dont leave without: Trying the Westphalian
ham, a regional speciality produced from
acorn-fed pigs that are dry-cured and smoked
over juniper branches.
On until: 30 December, ruhr-tourismus.de
MUNICH
Fly to Munich West/Memmingen

Go because: If anyone knows how to do a

Christmas market, its the city of Frankfurt,
where the main Weihnachtsmarkt can be
traced all the way back to 1393. Back then
there was no Christmas tree (it only arrived in
the early 19th century), but religious mystery
plays were performed for the public. These
days, a key draw is the Bethmaennchen a
local bite-sized marzipan and almond pastry.
Dont leave without: The 2014 edition
glhwein (mulled wine) mug its the
ultimate collectible Frankfurt souvenir.
On until: 22 December, frankfurttourismus.de

Go because: Most Christmas markets

will see Saint Nicholas make a special
appearance, but few host the Krampus an
antihero figure in Bavarian folklore said to
punish badly behaved children at Christmas
time. Whether youve been naughty or nice,
its worth visiting Munichs renowned market
to see the menacing character race around
the stalls causing havoc on 14 and
21 December.
Dont leave without: Munichs Neuhauser
Strasse is home to Germanys biggest manger
market, so a nativity set is a must-buy.
On until: 24 December, muenchen.de

Top 3 Winter Warmers

In winter, Germans often drink

Flights to one of our newest
winter destinations, Poprad, started
this October, but we might have to
wait a little while longer before we can

hotel. Designed by Czech architecture
firm Atelier 8000, the Kezmarsk Hut
was thought up for an international
design competition, and not yet built.

The five-storey building, which looks

like a giant ice cube fallen into the

contemporary look, has been designed
to fit in with its intended surroundings:
the beautiful mountain peaks of the

IN FOCUS

Judit Polgr
Judit Polgrs life reads like
a Hollywood film script.
The phenomenal product of an
educational experiment carried
out by her father in socialist
Hungary, she became the
youngest ever chess grandmaster
at 15, was rated the number-one
female player for more than
25 years and led the charge
for womens rights by playing
and beating the pants off men
around the world. Surely, Jennifer
Lawrence is practising her
Hungarian accent as we speak?
There has been some talk
about turning my life into a
movie but Im not pushing for it,
chuckles Polgr, who this year
decided to retire from competitive
chess at the age of 38. It would

be interesting and funny but at the

moment, I just want to live my life
and do my own thing. Im certainly
not dying for a film to be made.
Its understandable that Polgr
would want to shun the spotlight
as much as possible. She has,
after all, been in the public eye
almost since birth. Growing up in
Budapest, she was home-schooled
alongside sisters Susan and
Sophia as part of a controversial
plan by her father Lszl to
prove that children could achieve
greatness if they are educated in
one specific subject from a young
age. The Polgr sisters received
a heavy dose of chess and the
results were remarkable. Susan
became a grandmaster and
Sophia an international master.

But it was little Judit who really

stood out, achieving international
success aged just nine at 1986s
New York Open.
From the beginning chess was
not just a game for me; it was
like a second language, Polgr
explains. I started playing at
five and by the age of 12, I was
the only girl participant at the
events I entered. I was raised to
believe that women are able to
get the same results as men. So
it was natural for me that I was
representing these ideas of equal
rights and it is a nice feeling
that some people look up to me
because of that.
While Polgrs career featured
some amazing individual
accomplishments, including

beating the legendary Garry

Kasparov in 2002, she rates
playing as part of the Hungarian
team in 1988 at the 28th Chess
Olympiad in Thessaloniki as
particularly memorable. Flanked
by her sisters and fellow chess
star Ildiko Madi, she won the first
ever gold for her country in the
womens team event after they
were blocked from competing
against the men. Polgr remained
devoted to Hungarian chess right
up until her retirement, helping the
mens team win silver at the 41st
Olympiad in Troms last August.
Its important that people in
Hungary continue to see chess as
something valuable, she says. In
the past there has been debate
over whether chess really is a sport,

but increasingly its being seen as

such. Its also entering education
systems around the world in
schools, it's really booming.
Polgr has played no small part
in popularising chess in education.
Her Chess Palace program,
which uses the board game as
a cognitive learning tool for
children, is now part of the national
curriculum in Hungary. And through
the Judit Polgr Foundation, she
organises chess festivals where
kids are introduced to the game
and parents can learn more about
her approach to education.
I believe chess improves the
ability of childrens minds to
structure things, plan ahead and
take responsibility when they make
a move, Polgr says. When they

WIZZ52_020_View_Judit DLSC.indd 21

make a bad move they lose, a

good move and they win. It also
makes them more creative.
Polgrs own children Oliver,
10 and Hanna, who is eight are
big fans of her chess festivals and
one cant help but wonder how
long it will be before they follow
in their mothers footsteps and
start toppling kings. But if they do
become brilliant players, it wont be
because of a pushy mother.
They like chess but they are
not attracted to it as much as
I was, she says. They grew up
having a mother going away
because of chess, so I dont know
if they see it as positive or negative.
But now that I have retired, its just
important that I spend quality time
with them. They need their Mum.

Whether its top chefs,

same approach, says Michelinstarred chef Wojciech Modest
Amaro, founder and creative force
behind Warsaws Atelier Amaro.
We do not serve the best dishes.
We plan dishes according to

Last June, on the 25th

happened to be US President
Barack Obama. When I heard
that he would visit our restaurant,

I felt very proud and excited, said

Amaro. On such occasions, you
feel honoured and focus on doing
your job the best you can.
For Amaro, Obamas visit was
as prestigious as the award of a
Michelin star for the second year

also the highlight of a career that
has taken the Silesian chef to the

Protocol didnt allow Obama

said that the President was very
impressed. The plates came back

Most people dont realise

that you can get truffles
from Abruzzo, says Aldo Zilli,
holding a truffle the size of a fist
(about 300s worth) beneath my
nose. In fact, many people from
Alba, the home of Italian truffles,
come to Abruzzo to get theirs!
The scent of the truffles earthy,
sweet and slightly sulphuric is
heavenly, and its making my
saliva glands work overtime.
Luckily Zilli has promised that Ill
soon be trying it (albeit just four or
five paper-thin slivers) with buttertossed, fresh Abruzzan pasta.
Aldo Zilli, currently head chef of
Londons two Cichetti restaurants
(sancarlocicchetti.co.uk), hails
from Abruzzo. This rugged, green,
bucolic region of Italy, about
90km east of Rome, is famous
for its food and wonderfully fresh
produce, and as such is often
called the store cupboard of Italy.
I ask Zilli to tell me more about
the food of his childhood home.
Abruzzo is self-contained, he
says. We dont need anyone
else. We have everything: our
own wine, our own truffles. We
have trabocchi, the wooden
fishing-shack restaurants built
on top of the sea, serving clams,
razor clams, monkfish, mullet,

bass... But it is also a shepherding

region, so if you go into the
countryside, you can eat mutton,
goat, goats cheese, lamb, deer
and suckling pig.
To prove his point about how
special and specific the food
from Abruzzo is, Zilli is creating a
feast from his childhood, just for
us. The pescatrice adriatica aqua
pazza (monkfish and tomatoes in
a wine broth) reminds him of when
he used to work at a fishmongers
(he used to get paid in monkfish).
As for the succulent arrosticini
(mutton skewers), these were
always on the table. We had an
open fire outside and we used
to cook a lot of meals. And the
melanzana al cinghiale (wild boar
wrapped in aubergine) was one
of his favourite dishes. I was the
youngest of nine, and as a child
I was often left with my mum. We
had no money, no luxuries and
food was incredibly important. So
I learned to cook, says Zilli.
After bringing the final dish,
the sweetly scented truffle pasta
to the table, he pours a glass of
full-bodied Montepulciano de
Abruzzo. Its famous all over
the world, Zilli says, and any
Abruzzan meal is incomplete
without it. aldozilli.com

fingers, slowly adding more
and more flour from the well to
the mixture. Keep going until
the entire mixture resembles a
roughly combined dough.
3. Now its time to get to work!
Start kneading the dough with
your hands. The longer and
harder you knead the pasta
dough, the springier and more
al dente it will be when cooked.
4. When the dough feels smooth,
youll know that its time to stop.

Roll it out with a rolling pin until

its long and thin. Now its time to
place the dough on the chitarra.
Cut any overmatter carefully and
place the dough on top of the
chitarra strings, then press down
firmly with the rolling pin and roll
up and down. The pressure of the
rolling pin on the strings cuts the
dough, leaving you with perfectly
cut spaghetti alla chitarra. Cook
in a pan of salted boiling water
for two to three minutes and
serve with rag or baby pork

to cover the best bits in two days.
As for accommodation, hotels
are good for couples or young
families, but if you're travelling
in a larger group, an apartment
is a smart choice, offering
independence, generous space,

better value-for-money and greater

flexibility. We found as much when
we stayed at Crystal Suites Old

These five-star flats are stylishly
furnished and kitted out with
mod cons high-tech kitchen
equipment, free Wi-Fi and
flatscreen TVs. Then theres the
real selling point the central

of the park-fringed Old Town, a

five-minute stroll from the medieval
Rynek Glowny (the main square),
the Renaissance-era Cloth Hall
and St Marys Basilica. Theyre also
10 minutes from Krakows highlight,

BUCHAREST

People said we were mad to open a

club on a street that was little more
than a building site, says Michael
Fraser, the British manager of Mojo, one of
Bucharests top live music venues. The council
had begun to repair the road but then work
suddenly stopped. Our punters had to clamber
over an improvised wooden walkway to get to
the front door.
That was in 2009. Last October, Mojo
celebrated its fth birthday. The street it stands
on, Strada Gabroveni, has been repaved and is
packed with a vibrant mix of pubs and clubs
and although a few of the old buildings look on
the brink of collapse, its a far cry from the past.
Weve come a long way, Fraser says, and the
Old Town with it.
Hes not wrong. The Romanian capital has
changed immeasurably over the past decade,
and its Centru Vechi, or old centre, has seen a
total overhaul. Centred around Strada Lipscani
(in fact, the whole area is often called Lipscani),
its one of very few parts of old Bucharest that
survived more or less intact the modernisation
of the city in the 1980s.

Before the demolitions began in 1984, much

of the area south of the Old Town (including
the zone now occupied by the monstrous Casa
Poporului, or Palace of the Parliament) looked
much like the venerable district, with elegant
18th- and 19th-century houses nestled in
among shops, churches and cafes. Communist
Party head and Romanian leader Nicolae
Ceauescus desire to remodel Bucharest in
his own image saw almost a fth of the capital
destroyed between 1984 and 1989, and the
Old Town itself may not have survived had the
revolution of December 1989 not intervened.
In the late 1990s, Centru Vechi was
something of a ghost town. While the rest of
the city was growing at a pace unmatched even
today, the Old Town was ignored. It resembled
an abandoned lm set, seeing little footfall
by day and even less by night. If you had said
then that this would become the most visited
part of the Romanian capital and the citys
liveliest entertainment district most residents
wouldnt have believed you.
I remember walking around the Old Town
shortly after I arrived in Romania, back in

Its the vision of local

entrepreneurs that has
brought back the life
and bustle of the 30s

2001, says Jerry Van Schaik, whose Amsterdam

Grand Cafe was the rst modern venue to open
its doors in the area. There wasnt much going
on, and it wasnt the kind of area you wanted
to spend much time in. But it made me think
of the Jordaan in Amsterdam, which had just
seen a transformation from no-go area to most
happening part of the city. So we decided to
take a gamble.
Opened in 2002, Amsterdam immediately
became a focal point of the Old Town, and a
pioneer of its revival. Now Van Schaiks latest
venture, Grand Cafe Van Gogh, has seized that
baton, becoming Bucharests meet you there
venue, while his Rembrandt, which launched

next door in 2005, is one of the most successful

boutique hotels in the city. Often full, its
an example of how the areas 19th-century
buildings can really shine after restoration.
Benetting from one of the most recent Old
Town renovations is the handsome building
dominating Strada Selari, which is now a
brasserie and beerhall called Republic. The
brainchild of local entrepreneur Bebi Oprea,
the aim was to make the best use possible of the
buildings original, enormous cellar.
Ive been operating in the Old Town in one
way or another for a decade, says Oprea. Back
then the area was not in great shape, to say the
least. At one point we almost lost faith. Then we
decided to open a small bar, and since then we
really have seen it all.
Although the city has played its part
pedestrianising much of the area, for example
its the vision of entrepreneurs like Oprea thats
done most to bring back the life and bustle of
the 1920s and 30s, when this was Bucharests
thumping commercial heart. The National Bank
of Romania, a neoclassical masterpiece, looms
opposite Van Schaiks properties, while nearby

is the gorgeous Macca-Villacrosse Passage. The

rst covered shopping arcade in the city, built
in the 1890s, today its a warren of cafes and
bars. Strada Lipscani itself was once a thriving
hub of textile merchants, some of whom are
still going.
Full of admirers of the eclectic architecture
by day, its at night that the Old Towns
metamorphosis really shines. Mojo and
Republic are just two of more than 100 venues
that now populate the buzzy area. Even too busy
for some at times, the area has done wonders to
boost Bucharests prole as a destination.
Aside from bars, theres theatre especially
the much-loved Comedy Theatre and
some ne-dining options, such as awardwinning restaurant Artist by Dutch chef Paul
Oppenkamp. You can even nd cabaret and
burlesque at Bordellos, another Bebi Oprea
venue, which used to be a brothel many decades
ago. Look out for the vintage softcore adorning
the walls a cheeky touch!
Despite modernisation, the areas beautiful
historic churches are still one of its biggest
draws. Dedicated to the patron saint of

changed forever. Tucked away between Oslo
and Bergen amid endless lakes and peaks, the
tiny mountain town had long been hard to
reach. Then in 1907 the railway station
opened and the tourists started to arrive (now
less that three hours from Bergen), attracted by
the prospect of fresh snow, big skies and clean
mountain air. New hotels opened, and before
long, Norways rst proper ski resort was born.
But as time passed, bigger, slicker ski
resorts opened across the country and Geilo
could no longer claim to be unique. Well, not
until 1999, when a local musician began a
bold experiment. His idea? To make musical
instruments out of ice.
When I heard the sound for the rst time
I found it extremely beautiful, says Terje
Isungset. An experienced percussionist, he
grew up in Geilo and now performs his oddly
haunting ice music at venues around the globe.

I thought, why not make a festival where

everyone has to deal with ice and snow? he
says. A meeting point for people who want to
work creatively, and see ice as a resource.
A decade on from its inception, the Ice Music
Festival (icemusicfestival.no) that Isungset
founded is gearing up for its biggest year yet.
From 58 February 2015, musicians from
around the world will join the festival still
hosted in Geilo for a four-day celebration of
ice and music.
With open-air concerts, an ice-carving
demonstration and a seminar about the
evolution of Arctic ice, organisers are hoping to
attract tourists to the town from as far aeld as
Australia and Canada. New instruments will be
created. And new sounds will be discovered.
But how do you organise a music festival
when the instruments, stages and seats are all
made out of frozen water? To nd out, we speak
to some of the people involved.

The Sculptor
A trained chef, Connecticut native Bill Covitz
began making ice sculptures to accompany
buffets and banquets. Then, after a stint
working with a master ice carver in Boston, he
decided it was time for a career change.
At that moment I really knew what I
wanted to do, he says. I fell in love with the
art, and I fell in love with the work. Not the
backbreaking, grunting part of it, he jokes,
but the creative side.
Covitz went on to open his own studio in
Connecticut, creating elaborate ice carvings
for weddings and corporate functions. One
day, an American marimba player got in touch,
saying that hed been asked to perform at an
ice festival in Norway. Covitz flew along to
lend a hand (ice instruments dont travel very
well, after all) and hes been involved with the
festival ever since.

Armed with a modied chainsaw and

precision power tools, he crafts fully
functioning instruments out of Norwegian ice.
Harps, horns, cellos, drums you name it, hes
created it for the festival. There arent too
many instruments I havent been able to do yet,
he says. Although with the string instruments,
were cheating a bit you have to put real strings
on them. I cant make ice strings!
The ice Covitz uses comes from two main
sources: big blocks are hauled in from another
part of Norway, while higher-quality ice (essential
to make the likes of marimbas and chimes really
sing) is sawn out of a lake near Geilo.
Sometimes its great, sometime its not,
says Covitz. Thats the really beautiful thing
about ice: you never know. Every year is
different. Even from one pond to another, the
ice can sound completely different.

BELOW: THE VENUES ARE
DESIGNED TO EMPHASISE
HOW MAGICAL A PLACE
GEILO IS

The Architect
Everything starts with a sketch, says Helder
Neves, the architect who designs the festivals two
outdoor venues (a third, warmer venue is inside
a local church). We then have to gure out the
amount of snow that were going to need.
When building the small stage hosting a
midnight concert during this years festival,
snow should be easy to come by. In the
wintertime, theres always plenty of fresh stuff
dumped onto the mountains. Its a completely
isolated, magical place, says Neves. For two
years weve been designing it so the audience
will be able to see the musicians playing and, at
the same time, watch the full moon rising.
Building the festivals other outdoor venue
in the middle of town could be a little more
difcult. This is the festivals main stage, with
dreamy mood lighting and reindeer skins

covering seats made out of snow. A team of

volunteers will be brought in to help build the
arena, which will seat up to 200. But even with
their help, the projects expected to take a week.
Were dealing with the power of nature,
says Neves. With snow, it takes very little for
things to change. But its also a very rewarding
material: you can reuse it; its never destroyed;
and its easy to rebuild or improve things.
Neves love affair with ice and snow is
surprising considering that hes originally from
sunny Portugal. He moved to Norway in 2007
to complete a masters degree in architecture
and now runs an aurora-spotting company in
Troms. Would he ever consider leaving for
warmer climes? My whole life depends on
snow and natural phenomena, he says. Both
of those happen in Norway.

The Musician
You might think that frozen ngers and lips
would be the biggest worry for a musician playing
instruments made out of ice. But Terje Isungset,
founder of the Ice Music Festival, says its the fact
that all of the instruments are unique that takes
some getting used to. You always have a new
instrument, he says. Theyre also very fragile,
so if you hit them too hard, theyll break.
Making and using an ice horn (imagine the
cone-shaped part of a gramophone and youre in
the right ballpark) is rarely a problem, Isungset
says, but you need better-quality ice. And there
are only a few places that have ice that really
sounds good. Ideally, it needs to be free from
imperfections and have been frozen naturally
(apparently, the movement of rivers and lakes

helps to keep bubbles out of the ice).

Isungset says at least two new instruments
will be tested at this years festival: a kind of
bass cello and an African-style drum. Also, for
the rst time ever, electronic sounds will be
mixed in with some of the ice music. But dont
expect Geilo to turn into the Nordic Ibiza.

1. Alfama
Its 5am and the rst tram of the day crawls
out of the depot. The yellow, single wooden
car is chugging up the hill, whizzing around
hairpin bends, and skimming just millimetres
from blue-tiled buildings (the street called
Escolas Gerais seems barely wider than the
tram). And then we grind to a halt. Supervisor
Paulo Birra opens the window, folds in the
wing mirror of a van that were perilously
close to, and then bangs on the side. Theres
a guy sleeping in there, he laughs. Every day
is an adventure. We know how it will start,
but we have no idea how itll end. No sooner
has he nished talking than we stop again.
This time its a power cut. The street is lit only
by the dawn sky.
Lisbons trams date back to the 1930s, and
their tracks are among the steepest in the
world. On the east-to-west route, they pass
just about everything in the city worth
seeing. After leaving Martim Moniz, the
heart of multicultural Lisbon with its
Tanzanian and Mozambican cafs, we
head uphill. The wide avenues give way to

WIZZ52_040_Feature_Lisbon DLC.indd 52

the narrow, cobbled streets of Alfama, the

oldest part of the city, which is home to the
white-stone Pantheon and Lisbon Cathedral
(the citys oldest building). Elderly women sit
in doorways, kids chase each other through
alleyways, and washing hangs between the
centuries-old buildings.
Route 28 skirts above Alfama, looking
down on the red-tiled houses stretching
to the River Tagus. But none of the
cameras pointing out of the trams
windows are snapping Alfama. Theyre
all looking in the other direction: at the
Castelo de Sao Jorge.

Every day is an adventure.

We know how it will start,
but we have no idea how
itll end Paulo Birra, tram driver

2. Castelo de So Jorge
Sitting at one of the highest points in Lisbon,
Castelo de So Jorge can be seen from almost
anywhere in the city. And while it looks
remarkably intact from the outside, this
Moorish citadel was badly damaged in the
great earthquake of 1755, which nearly flattened
the city. Its still possible to climb up the ramparts
for 360 views, but many of the walkways dont
have any barriers, so its not for the faint-hearted.
Before rushing back to the tram, we take a detour to
pop into Resto do Chapito. As well as commanding
views of the Tagus, theres the added attraction of
the circus school occupying the rest of the building.
On leaving, were invited to watch the trainee
clowns practising a slapstick routine.

3. A Brasileira
The tram heads downhill, through the flat plazas
of downtown, and then uphill into Chiado. As well
as being the shopping district, this is also a creative
neighbourhood home to the citys arts and cinema
schools. We alight here to meet Portugals most
famous poet, Fernando Pessoa, who spent almost
all of his life within the city limits, and is a Lisbon
icon. His bronze statue sits cross-legged at a table
outside his favourite coffee shop, A Brasileira,
presumably waiting for his usual: an espresso and a
grappa. Writers still come here to meet and talk,
waiter Victor Porto tells me, which is tting given
that Pessoa produced some of his work inside the
grand caf and under 75 different pseudonyms.
He invented backstories for each of these imaginary
authors, and wrote in radically different styles for
each. The grappa mustve helped.

4. Bairro Alto
One stop along from Chiado is Bairro Alto, and if
Pessoa couldnt get enough grappa in A Brasileira,
he wouldve found it here. This little network of
pedestrianised streets is the heart of Lisbons
nightlife. Avoid the waiters hawking foreign
menus, and head into one of the fado bars. These
are the places to hear the traditional melancholy
Portuguese folk singers, and they arent hard to
nd: the whole neighbourhood is lled with their
crooning every evening. In recent years, though,
the cool kids have left this nightlife stalwart behind
and headed downhill to the port area of Cais do
Sodre. Until a couple of years ago, Cais do Sodre was
the citys red light district, frequented by visiting
sailors. Locals kept well away. Now, the whole area
turns into a Brazilian-style street party every night.
The longest queues are outside Pensao Amor (the
Love Hotel), but this burlesque-themed bar is well
worth the wait.

5. Mercado da Ribeira
In the early hours, while street cleaners gather up
the empty bottles in Cais do Sodre, fruit-and-veg
traders in the neighbouring Mercado da Ribeira
are pulling up the shutters. Before May, the only
hipsters youd nd here were those still up from the
night before. And then Time Out moved in, took over
half of the market, and invited some of Portugals
nest chefs to set up shop. The result is the citys
best food market and Time Outs rst. Head straight
to celebrity chef Alexandre Silvas stall for a plate of
thick-cut, raw salmon on a bed of guacamole, tomato
and lettuce. Or try Marlene Vieiras bacalhau (salted
cod) on a chickpea mousse with cornbread and
spinach. The market is open until 2am at weekends
perfect for stopping at before or after partying.

6. Bica
Just outside the market is the Ascensor da Bica,
a tiny 19th-century funicular that climbs up
the ridiculously steep hill away from the Tagus.
Cars and kids play a game of cat and mouse
with the little funicular, which is a sister of
number 28. Like a toy-town version of the tram,
it is also a functioning form of public transport,
and was declared a national monument in 2002.
The steep-gradient hill that it climbs is full of
hole-in-the-wall bars, cafs and design shops,
but a better option is to head a couple of streets
west to the Santa Catarina viewpoint. Populated
almost exclusively by locals (the tourists are all
at the Santa Luzia viewpoint on the other side
of town, near the castle), this is the place to
drink as the sun goes down.

7. Prazeres Cemetery
Perhaps because the western half of the route
doesnt have the cobbled streets and obvious photo
ops of the castle-side, the tram is beginning to
empty. Towards the end of the line it grows deadly
quiet, maybe because the 28 runs out of track at
the Prazeres Cemetery, Lisbons answer to Paris
Pre Lachaise. We enter this city of the dead just
before closing time to admire the huge mausoleums
lining the wide tarmacked avenues. Rich dynasties
attempted to defy the adage that you cant take
wealth with you by building colossal family burial
houses. A smaller mausoleum in the shadow of one
of these grand structures looks like it hasnt seen
fresh flowers for a century; its partially boarded
up with doors prised off, while a notice reads
abandoned. I peer inside, but theres a rustling...
And so I beat a retreat through the huge metal gates
of the cemetery. Heading back past stalls selling
tram-themed paraphernalia, I catch a ride back
across town just as dusk begins to fall over the city.

Make a pig of yourself at this weekend-long

festival celebrating Hungarys hairy hog the
Mangalica. Begun in 2008 to promote sales
of the once-forgotten shaggy breed, the event
has grown substantially since then, and the
pigs notoriety has boomed with it. Budapest
now even has a shop, the Hspatika, or Meat
Pharmacy, purely dedicated to the delicious
product. Mangalica dominated the domestic
market until the 1950s then it all but died out,
says owner and festival co-founder Attila Vgh.
In 1991 there were only 200 left. The pigs are
now so popular that the event has been upscaled
and moved to the main downtown square of
Szabadsg tr, where music, folk dancing and
entertainment accompany the cheerful chomping
of prime pork. Stuff your own sausages, sample
Mangalica burgers and meet the producers to
thank them in person at this yummy festival.

Not only is Cluj the cultural hub of Romania, but

its also 2015s European Youth Capital. Taking
over the reigns from Thessaloniki in Greece, Cluj
will host a number of initiatives throughout the
year, all aimed at having long-term benets for
young artists and creatives in Transylvanias de

the umbrella of EYC 2015 takes place over six days
in March: ClujShorts. Now in its third year, this
cinematic festival of short lms, documentaries
and animation will be including a new category to
mark the EYC festivities, Young Europe. Already
there are awards for lm, documentary and
animation. Of the 600-plus works submitted in
2014 from auteurs in Germany, US and Moldova,
prizes went to lms about border guards, urban

Uupis is more than just a

neighbourhood in the Lithuanian
capital. The suburb is a state
within a state, with its own
constitution, currency and
national anthem. Its flag changes
colour according to season and
a smiley face features on its
border sign. A dilapidated hub
for bohemians, Uupis declared
independence from the Soviet
Union along with Lithuania
itself in 1990, and in the spirit
of goodwill, the parliament in
Vilnius allows Uupis to celebrate
statehood once a year. The 7,000
residents gather to party, beer
flows freely, and a procession
winds its way around the
self-proclaimed microstate.

Kutaisi Electronic Music Festival
Fly to Kutaisi
This festival attracted some big names to
western Georgia when it kicked off last June.
Darlings of the London indie scene Vondelpark,
New Yorks languid electronic jazzster Slow
Hands, and Georgian dance master Gacha
gained top billing. Its second year promises to
be even bigger. The event takes place south of
Kutaisi in Baghdati, a bucolic village beside the
Khanistsqali river at the edge of the Ajameti
forest. Baghdatis only real claim to fame is the
birthplace of renowned Soviet poet Vladimir
Mayakovsky. Now the festival, with its edgy
electronic music, might just change that.

Under the working title of Bond 24, Britains

most famous secret agent returns to UK
screens in time for the half-term holiday in
October. Current Bond star Daniel Craig is at
the centre of the action yet again, while Sam
Mendes returns to the directors chair, and
many of the other key gures on the $1-billion
(802m)-grossing, Oscar-winning Skyfall
are rumoured to be involved. Otherwise,
like 007 himself, Bond 24 is wrapped in
mystery. Details of plot, villain and leading
lady are currently as secret as the lming at
Pinewood Studios, which lies just outside the
capital. Home of the real Secret Intelligence
Service MI6 in Vauxhall, London has always
played a major role in the crafting of the spy
legend. With that in mind, Bond fans can
take a three-hour tour (britmovietours.com)
of locations used for Skyfall, Goldeneye and
Tomorrow Never Dies to see how and where
the lms were made. Meanwhile, the London
Film Museum (londonlmmuseum.com) is
hosting Bond in Motion, a unique exhibition
of device-enhanced vehicles used by the secret
agent, due to run into 2015. As for Bond 24, all
will be revealed when the red carpet is rolled
out at Leicester Square in October so prepare
yourself for a massive PR blitz around London.

attracted an anti-fascist following and fans from

Views, booze and

easy blues in Cervinia
The Aosta Valley is one of the most beautiful
regions in the Alps. Its also one of the smallest,
which means you can easily visit a few different ski
resorts in one week. We suggest you pick up a hire
car at Turin airport and get exploring...
Start in Cervinia. Park your car and head
straight for the Bontadini chair lift which will take
you to the top of the 3,295m Theodul Pass. Here
the premier league of 4,000m-high European
peaks spread out for miles and miles before you,
including Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, Liskamm,
Breithorn, Dent dHerens and, of course, the
Matterhorn itself. You dont get the classic
view of the Matterhorn from Cervinia that
honour is held by Zermatt over on the Swiss
side of the mountain but ski down the Plateau
Rosa to Zermatt for the Toblerone-wrapper
image. Travelling between the two resorts is
straightforward, and you will save money if you
buy your Cervinia/Zermatt card in the former.

Runs in Zermatt tend to be busier and more

challenging than in Cervinia, but theyre worth it
for the views. Try the Stafelalp run, which curves
round the base of the Matterhorn its guaranteed
to make you feel small. Just dont forget to take
your credit card; not only is Switzerland more
expensive than Italy, but you may not be able to use
euros in the bars and restaurants.
Back in Cervinia, follow the sun around the
west-facing slopes on a selection of blue and red
runs (including the resorts classic 12km Ventina).
Or maybe youll try the Indian terrain park, right by
the Fornet chair lift. Its one of the largest and best in
Italy, with a good mix of kickers, rails and walls.
The aprs ski isnt exactly banging in Cervinia,
but for a well-earned pint or grappa, theres
plenty to keep you entertained. Enjoy happy-hour
at the Yeti (yeticervinia.it) or try the Aprs Ski
Bar at Hotel Principe delle Nevi (principdellenevi.
com) for cocktails and live music.

Drive for about 90 minutes southwest through

the Aosta Valley from Cervinia and you will
reach La Thuile. Its another multinational
ski destination, with the French resort of La
Rosire an easy mornings skiing away on the
other side of the valley. If the snow is sketchy
in La Thuile, the chances are itll be good in
sunny La Rosire, and vice versa, which means
excellent skiing is pretty much guaranteed.
La Thuile and La Rosire share about 160km
of pistes between them. La Thuile has wide,
open slopes above the tree line and more
sheltered terrain lower down among the trees,
while the runs tend to be steeper than La
Rosire. Black Number 3 is a good example
there are few groomed runs in La Rosire that
will match this steep little number, which at
times tilts 35, making it one of the steepest
pistes in the Aosta Valley.
A few blasts down Black Number 3 is hungry
work, and a great place to relax and refuel
is Maison Carrel (maisoncarrel.com). This
friendly, unpretentious mountain restaurant on
the lower slopes of 2,379m Gran Testa serves
heart-warming Italian and French fare. Check
out the tagliere misto di salumi valdastani,
an excellent selection of dried beef, venison,
pork, ham, blood sausage, black bread and
particularly tasty honey chestnuts. It goes
beautifully with a bottle of LAtouyo Torrette
Superieur, a lovely red from the nearby
Aymavilles Valley.
A last titbit about Maison Carrel: the
proprietor, Giorgio Carrell, is a direct
descendant of Jean-Antoine Carrel, the rst
man to climb the Matterhorn from the Italian
side in 1865.

Challenging runs and ice

climbing in Courmayeur
Just 30 minutes from La Thuile is Courmayeur,
where youll nd an appealing mix of speedy,
groomed slopes, seriously challenging off-piste
(its a regular venue for the fast and frenetic
Freeride World Tour), and some of the most
spectacular mountain panoramas in the Alps
after all, youre right beneath the towering Mont
Blanc. Add to that an attractive little town centre
and some ne restaurants, and whats not to like?
The resort caters for intermediate and expert
skiers, so start off by bombing down the red
and black pistes below the 2,624m Cresta Youla
and the 2,256m Col Checrouit. Theres plenty
to recommend them both, not least because
the views of Mont Blanc are so fantastic. From
afternoon, head for the trees above Val Veny,
where theres usually a good chance of nding
powder. One of the best runs is the descent
from Cresta Youla to Zerotta, over 1,100m of
quiet terrain with a mix of respectably steep
reds and blacks winding down and around the
mountain. If youve worked up an appetite,
head for the rustic and friendly Chateau

If you fancy something a little different,
why not give ice climbing a go? Each winter,
the waterfalls clinging to the various rock

mountain guides (guidecourmayeur.com) offer
ice-climbing experiences to everyone, from
beginner to expert, with axes and crampons

A ROMANIAN
WORK OF ART
Visitors to this quaint town in Satu Mare
County will find it perfectly preserved, full of
authentic buildings and artistic passions
n the northwest corner of Romania, amid the lush
countryside of Satu Mare County, lies the town of Negreti
Oa. The settlement, just 50km from the centre of Satu
Mare, upholds the traditional customs of the Oa people especially
their artistic heritage and unique architecture. Its name, according
to documents dating from 1270, comes from the black colouring of
the gube a thick, longhaired coat worn by the townsfolk. Although,
some historians argue that its named after the dark oak forests that
surround the town.
The towns status developed steadily from 1389 and throughout
the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries it was ruled by various wealthy
families. Notably, by Drag the descendant of Drago, a warlord from
Maramure County from 1389 and the well-known Hunyadi family
from 1452. Throughout the 18th century the whole county was under
Habsburg rule and, according to an 1809 document by author Antal
Szirmay, Negreti Oa was the largest Romanian settlement in the
area, with 300 houses stretching over 77 hills. It was only in 1964 that
the settlement received the title of a town.

Experience the rich heritage of Negreti Oa

Visitors wanting the most authentic history of the town should check
out the Museum of Oa Land, which sits on the main Victoriei street.
Established in 1966, the ethnographic museum was designed to depict
a typical Oa town. The permanent exhibition features folk art and
costumes from the Oa region, as well as fabrics, pottery from Vama,
furniture, elements of architecture and photos by I. G. Andron, whose
interwar work represents the last images of an archaic world. The art
collection includes the work of painter Ioan na.
The open-air museum sits in the centre of town, on the banks of the
Tur River, and features monuments of peasant architecture from the
17th to the 20th century. The most remarkable pieces include houses

from Cmrzana and Raca, two unicellular houses and a shed from
Ghera Mic, the sheep shed and storage room from Bixad, the
circular coop from Negreti and the wooden church from Lechina,
dating from 1604.
The biggest attraction is the living part of the museum. The
section, made of technical installations, features a mill, whirlpool
and mill machine operated by water, the blacksmith workshop,
the pottery workshop and the operational machine for making the
local brandy, plinca. The journey through the museum ends in
an exciting pottery workshop, in a beautiful wooden house from
the beginning of the 20th century. The workshop has six electrical
pottery wheels, two kilns, a masticator and plenty of furniture to
accommodate its guests.
The pottery tradition
This long-standing tradition of pottery that first appeared under the
influence of the Byzantine empire is further maintained in the Vama
commune, which lies to the east of Negreti Oa. Archived documents
suggest the practice was around before 1850 and the number of
potters in this area slowly dwindled to just one today: Geza Istvanfi.
After learning the craft from his father and grandfather, Istvanfi
dedicated his life to this passion. In his workshop you can watch how
the potters wheel transforms the clay into jars and plates.
Ceramics from Vama are decorated by geometrical motifs points,
lines, circles and spirals. Formerly, the potters used to carry their
goods in horse-drawn carriages to the fairs that used to take place in
Negreti Oa. From here, the goods were often bought by tradesmen
and sold in Sighet, Carei, Satu Mare and Zalu.

Romanian architecture
In addition to the countrys artistic roots, its also known for its
traditional architecture, notably the commune Corund, which has a
wooden church dating from 1723, dedicated to the archangels Michael
and Gabriel. The church was initially built on a hill in the middle of the
cemetery, but in 1868 it was moved using blocks to the centre of the
village 300m away. The church has a rectangular form and is the oldest
folk art monument in the Codru area. Visitors can recognise the church
from far away due to its tall, slender tower. The entrance portal feels
grand, while the interior features tempera murals by iple Popa. The
painting starts in the narthex, depicting the Last Judgment from the
Byzantine empire. Painted to the right of the entry is Lucifer, while the
vault resembles western baroque art. The church is sacred in terms of art
and literature, housing religious book from the 18th and 19th centuries.

LE ADING BUSINESS EDUC ATION

The CEU Business School wants to bring international growth to central and eastern Europe

ver the past 25 years central and eastern European

countries have become globally competitive, transforming
the area from a socialist region into a successful market
economy. Mel Horwitch, dean of the Central European University
(CEU) Business School in Budapest, believes business schools
are essential in continuing this international growth and helping
central and eastern Europe realise its full potential.
At present, Horwitch thinks the effort is only halfway there,
since the most prominent international indices of innovation,
competitiveness and business development still rank central
and eastern European nations somewhere in the middle. This
might seem surprising for a region that emphasises educational
attainment, cultural achievement and world-class scientific
discovery. The CEU Business School believes the reasons behind
this lag are not only political, social or macroeconomic in nature
such as government policy, poorly performing educational systems
and unease with risk-taking.
While tackling these issues are important, CEU Business School
believes that these CEE countries require a broad commitment to
innovation and managerial professionalism and so its programmes
work to create trained managers and sophisticated entrepreneurs.
Founded in 1988 by George Soros, this dynamic school provides
top-notch professional management and entrepreneurial
education, while also emphasising relevant current knowledge
of real-life operations. Ever since its inception the school has
proudly contributed to the central and eastern European region
and beyond. Its programmes, fully aligned with western practices,

Kozep_Decv3.indd 11

strive for superior performance throughout a business-school

value chain: teaching, curriculum and programme development
and extensive research. CEU Business School was the first
educational institution in this region to offer a programme that
finishes with an American MBA.
Horwitch and CEU Business School now look to the next 25
years and the school is committed to advancing the regions
international growth. By focusing on a quality academic core for
innovation, entrepreneurship, integrity in management and global
leadership, it aims to succeed. Through its work with partners
across the region, the school hopes to play a vital role in creating
dynamic and successful new clusters of global competitiveness.

rowing numbers of couples across
European and Scandinavian countries are
searching for quick, reliable ways to solve
infertility. For many, their dreams are threatened
because of laws, restrictions and long queues in
their own countries. Whether theyre over 40 or a
same-sex couple, many are travelling overseas for
access to egg donation, IVF treatment and ICSI.
The EGV Clinic in Riga, Latvia can fulfil these
dreams and offers a fast service. First opened in
1998, its founding doctors have around 15 years
of experience in infertility treatments.
Egg donation is often the best solution for
patients struggling to get pregnant through
traditional fertility treatments and the procedures
at the EGV Clinic have had amazing results. In
fact, the success rate in 2013 for egg donations in
patients over 40 was 45%.
Unfortunately, for women in many countries
there is a lack of egg donors, forcing more patients
abroad. Dr Modrite Kraujina, one of the clinics

physicians, says, If a woman is over 40 she gets

placed at the back of a life-long queue. The same
goes for women who have gone through several IVF
treatments but are still struggling.
At the EGV Clinic, there is a large pool of local
donors for both eggs and semen, and all female
donors are healthy locals aged 18-30. The process
guarantees full anonymity and discretion patients
define their criteria and the EGV clinic will propose
donors, which meet these as closely as possible.
International patients are prioritised, which
makes a treatment at the EGV clinic fast and easy.
Dr Modrite Kraujina believes the clinics global
popularity is a result of the convenience, quality
and focus on the patient experience. She says, Its
our mission to help you get your long-awaited
baby. Often we find solutions in cases where other
doctors have said that it is impossible.

WINTER GUIDES

PESCARA Italy
TOUCH DOWN
Pescaras biggest draw is its
16km stretch of sandy beaches
along the Adriatic, although
youd be wise to wrap up warm
if you decide to walk astride the
long promenade, Viale della
Riviera, at this time of year. And
in the heart of the city lies Piazza
della Rinascita, an expansive,
palm-tree lined square. Apart
from being a great location for a
morning cappuccino and cornetto
(Italian-style croissant), its also
an ideal spot to watch Abruzzans
go about their daily business.
GET OUT
Keen to find out some of the
history of this beautiful region?
Then make a bee-line for the
Museo delle Genti dAbruzzo.
This charming little museum tells

the story of rural Abruzzo through

a number of traditional objects,
including shepherds caves,
carnival masks, authentic local
costume and more. Much of the
information is in Italian, so pick up
an audio guide at the entrance for
details in English. gentidabruzzo.it
EAT WELL
They take seafood very seriously at
Marechiaro da Bruno. This fish
restaurant on Pescaras bustling
promenade offers lightly grilled
octopus salad, salmon carpaccio,
black cuttlefish risotto, spaghetti
alle vongole, langoustines
flambd in Cognac, and many
more delicious seafood dishes.
Non-fish fans can try the tomato
and ricotta ravioli, veal escalopes,
or steak with green peppercorn
sauce. ristorante-marechiaro.eu

DRINK UP
Dance to a Brazilian beat at
Samboa, a South Americanthemed bar and restaurant in
the centre of town. The potent
caipirinha will soon have your
hips wiggling to the irresistible

salsa music, while there are great

empanadas if you get peckish.

PRAGUE Czech Republic

TOUCH DOWN
It might not have the gravitas
of the many German Christmas
markets, but Pragues beautiful
festive fairs are certainly worth
investigating. There are two
main markets a short walk from
one another one at the Old
Town Square and the other
at Wenceslas Square. Order
a svaren vno (mulled wine)
and a homemade gingerbread
biscuit, or some sausage and
sauerkraut. Then stroll past the
dozens of stalls selling local-made
Christmas gifts decorations,
jewellery, scarfs, hats and more.
The markets run until 11 January.
GET OUT
Prague is hardly short of sensational
architecture (the Astronomical
Clock, the Charles Bridge, Prague

Castle), but a short drive away

youll find Cesk Krumlov. This
beautiful town contains more than
300 historic houses, a castle and
a chateau enough to make it a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Dont miss the medieval, Disneyesque red-roofed castle, positioned
above the Vltava River and
surrounded by landscaped gardens.
EAT WELL
For modern Czech cuisine, try
Stoleti (stoleti.cz). The menu
has traditional fare, but
modernises its dishes with
clever mixes of spices, creating
wonderfully unusual flavours.
Jama (jamapub.cz) remains
one of the most popular informal
options in town thanks to its
Czech-Mex menu, succulent burgers
and hearty American-style brunches.

DRINK UP
For a location that cant be beaten,
youll find Klub Lvka (lavka.cz)
right by the Charles Bridge. This
stylish locale hosts regular live
music, themed club nights, and even
theatre. For something a little more

luxe, try Duplex (duplex.cz), a club

with a great spot elevated above
Wenceslas Square. Dress to impress.

RIGA Latvia
TOUCH DOWN
Visible from nearly anywhere in
Rigas Old Town, the towering
spire of St. Peters Church
(peterbaznica.riga.lv) is a good
place to get the lay of the land
with its 72m-high observation
deck. The 13th-century house of
worship was destroyed by fire a
number of times, most recently
during World War II. Thankfully,
its new spire was rebuilt with a
lift this time, which means you
dont need to be an athlete or an
alpinist to enjoy fantastic views of
the Latvian capital.
GET OUT
If youd like to get into the
yuletide spirit this December,
theres no better place than
the Christmas Market (vzt.lv)
on Doma laukums (Cathedral

Square). Youll find a plethora

of stalls selling authentic Latvian
crafts, from wool mittens to amber
jewellery, all in the shadow of
the largest church in the Baltics.
Expect live music in the square,
as well as dance performances
and regular visits by Santa until
9 January 2015.
EAT WELL
For a contemporary take on Latvian
cuisine, try Valtera Restorans
(valterarestorans.lv). From organic
meats to vegetables grown on
sustainable farms, the restaurant
is focussed on local produce,
served in a beautiful whitewashed
space that dates back to 1702.
Meanwhile, wine aficionados
can pair refined international dishes
with the perfect pinot or cabernet at
stylish Vina Studija (vinastudija.lv).

DRINK UP
Latvians love their beer, so join
the crowd and choose from eight
different craft brews at Labietis
(labietis.lv), all created on the
premises. Start with a flowery IPA
or a fruity raspberry brew and

move on to dark concoctions with

names like Tapeworm Killer and
Beekeepers Widow.

SOFIA Bulgaria
TOUCH DOWN
Dominating the centre of town,
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
took nearly 10 years to build, with
construction beginning shortly after
Bulgarian independence at the turn
of the 20th century. Capable of
holding up to 7,000 people, this
monumental church was erected
in honour of the Russian Tsar,
whose troops defeated Bulgarias
Ottoman overlords.
The Sofia Art Gallery focuses
mainly on works by Bulgarian painters
and sculptors from the last century.
Depictions of Sofia, including its
markets and public figures, are given
pride of place in the high-ceilinged
halls of this former casino. sghg.bg
GET OUT
With shows at least three nights
a week, the Sofia Live Club is

one of the best places in town

for music lovers. Opened in

and jazz the main genres on offer.

EAT WELL
Traditional best describes Pod

classic Bulgarian dishes are

A highlight is the kojlyuvski stew,
comprising pork, onions, tomatoes,

The Hadjidraganovite Houses

restaurants in a complex created
by a 19th-century merchant,

TIRED OF THINNING HAIR?

This new pill could boost your hair and self-confidence
cientists in Oxford believe they can
help keep your hair thick and healthy.
Their pill TRX2 is currently one of
Europes best-selling hair supplements and
is sold in over 90 countries. TRX2 is a food
supplement based on organic compounds
and compared to medicinal products has no
apparent side effects whatsoever. Oxford
Biolabs CEO, Dr Thomas Whitfield, claims it
does what it says: Your hair will look much
bigger; it becomes heavier and thicker. You
maintain your healthy hair,
Hair treatments often promise a lot without
delivering, but TRX2 has been thoroughly
tested. Three of the key ingredients in TRX2
selenium, zinc and biotin are recognised

by the European Commission as contributing

factors to the maintenance of normal, healthy
hair. When its successful, the effects can be
impressive. Start TRX2 as early as possible and
address your hair problem before it is too late.
TRX2 is suitable for men and women of all
ages. The crystalline white capsules come in a
brown glass bottle, which is sufficient for one
month of treatment and costs approximately

TAKE OFF TO TUZLA

Wizz Air announced the
opening of its latest base in Tuzla
on 6 November. New flights from
the pretty north-east Bosnia
and Herzegovina town will go
to four destinations, Munich,
Oslo, Frankfurt and Stockholm,
from June. Prices start from BAM

39.99 (20). That brings the

total number of Tuzla routes
up to nine in five countries! As
the Bosnian tourism and aviation
industry grows, Wizz Air hopes
to be the top choice for a
country with plenty to offer
visitors. Beautiful Sarajevo is

the main draw and less than

a two-hour drive from Tuzla.
But Tuzla itself boasts a thriving
cultural life, in part thanks to
its sizable student population.
It is also the only city in Europe
with a salt lake. Book your flight
now at wizzair.com.

NEW ROUTES

Fly to the Netherlands

Wizz Air adds two new Dutch cities to
its ever-growing destination list:
Groningen and Maastricht
On 28 October, Wizz Air launched new routes
to the Netherlands the low-fare airline now
offers an impressive 18 routes to three airports
in the country. The flights are twice-weekly
from Katowice to the south-eastern city of
Maastricht, and from Gdansk to northern
Groningen. Prices start from 19.99 one way.
Groningen and Maastricht are both
dynamic, lively destinations, and have plenty
to offer new visitors. Historic Groningen
may surprise you often thought of as

just a quaint and pretty town, its fast

becoming one of Europes most enterprising
destinations, thanks to its young population
and start-up culture. Maastricht has a
reputation as the Netherlands foodie
capital, largely because it has five Michelin
stars a fantastic achievement for a city
with only 120,000 people.
We are thrilled about these two new
routes, says Diederik Pen, Wizz Airs Chief
Operations Officer. We are certain that our
passengers from Poland will enjoy visiting
the Netherlands, while Dutch travellers can
discover more of Poland by flying on one of
our new Airbus A320s.

BACK TO TEL AVIV

Not only has Wizz Air added one weekly
flight to its existing services from Budapest
and Bucharest to Tel Aviv, but the Warsaw-Tel
Aviv service has also been reinstated earlier
than expected. Wizz Airs Daniel de Carvalho
says that there is a growing demand for
routes to the Middle Eastern city: Were
looking forward to welcoming ever more
passengers on our greater number of flights
from Tel Aviv with the low fares that our
customers love, he adds.

Wizz Air has been growing

its services and popularity in
Romania to the extent that it now
boasts a whopping 97 routes to 15
countries from its eight airports in
the country! The newest addition is
Iasi, with a route from Iasi to Venice
Treviso (pictured) launching on 20
December, which will be followed
by Iasi to Milan Bergamo in
February 2015, and Iasi to LondonLuton in June 2015. Ticket prices
start as low as RON129 (29) one
way. There will also be new routes
from Bucharest to Pescara and
Stockholm Skavsta starting in the
summer. Book now at wizzair.com.

Come Join
Our Club!
Recently, Wizz Air celebrated
its 500,000th member to the

all flights starting from 19.99,
and other benefits such as a 5
saving on each piece of large

lucky 500,000th member was
Romanian Mihaela Cuciureanu,
on her way to Spain: This is
such an amazing surprise,
especially on my birthday, she
said. I have been flying with

WIZZ AMBASSADOR

This Is My City: Kiev

One of WIZZs two brand Ambassadors for
Ukraine, Alla Melnychuk, tells us whats so
fantastic about her hometown, Kiev
Ive been working as a flight attendant for
Wizz Air for more than three years now. I love
my job, no two days are ever the same! New
people, new horizons and new challenges are
always arriving. But there is one thing that is
a constant: my family at Wizz Air. Without a
doubt, we have the best team in the world,
and being part of it is such an honour.
I couldnt believe it when I was chosen
to be an Ambassador, I was really touched
by everyones support. The role requires a
great deal of responsibility: representing the
company at different events and inspiring
others, both colleagues and passengers.
Ive lived in Kiev since I was a child, but
Im always discovering something new about

this city. I say for first-time visitors, take a

short walk through Andrews Descent. Not
only does this area have a lot of famous
historical buildings, but its the heart of Old
Kiev. The golden domes and majesty of St
Andrews Cathedral, St Michaels monastery
(pictured above) and St Sophias Cathedral
will impress and fascinate everybody.
But its not just the beautiful architecture
that is such a draw, the food here is
delicious! Chicken Kiev (kotleta po kievsky)
is probably the most famous dish, and I
think whenever youre in Kiev, you must try
it! Spotykach restaurant (16 Vladimirskaya
St) is one of the best traditional Ukrainian
restaurants. Here they make a fantastic
Kievsky cake, a cake named after our city.
Kiev is also one of Europes greatest
cultural cities. The Pinchuk Art Centre
(pinchukartcentre.org) is one of the largest

contemporary art museums in Eastern

Europe, with exhibitions showcasing work by
Ukrainian and international artists.
Whenever Im in the mood for some
fresh air, I go to the outdoor museum of Folk
Architecture and Life of Ukraine, Pirogovo
(pyrohiv.com.ua). This open-air exhibition
tells the story of life in Ukraine from the 16th
century to the present day.
But Ukrainian winters can be cold!
If like me you prefer to enjoy the snowy
scene from inside, try cozy restaurant-bar
Dyvan (festrestdivan.com.ua). This is the
perfect place to come with friends for daily
performances of popular bands, unusual
movie screenings and live jazz.

crew? Find out more on our Facebook page
