LO Social Responsibility d-e

To have good citizenship means to live life in a way that is respectful and helpful to
those around you whether it is people, pets, or the environment. Civic engagement
requires one to know what needs to be done and the means to accomplish that.
Civic engagement entails helping the community by volunteering and making it a
better place and being a good citizen. Volunteering can be in many things and must
involve donating time to interact with the community and help where it is needed
and be continuous with it. I have volunteered in many places the most being at an
organization called the Webb Foundation. It is a faith based organization that puts
on events to bring the community together. I volunteer at their Islamic school on
Sundays. I also volunteered at Elmhurst hospital in the ER, assisting the staff and
patients.

LO Global Perspective
Naturally people rely on connections with each other in order to accomplish a
variety of tasks. Causes and motives bring them together and separate them at the
same time. It is important to understand other cultures and perspectives because it
helps build deeper relationships and stronger connections and makes
communication easier. That is why it is also important to understand communication
methods between different cultures. Different cultures have different means of
introduction like shaking hands or bowing. It is important to know this because
sometimes it can be offensive to others if the wrong action is taken. A person has a
responsibility to their community to help those around them. A person is like a cell,
an individual cell is part of a larger system of a tissue, an organ, an organ system,
and an organism. All these little cells seem minuscule but they all play a very
important part to make success happen on a larger level. In todays world that is
connected extremely well it is important to be able to communicate in a different
language in order to make peoples lives easier and to get the message across
effectively. Being an internationals student has helped me become more aware of
different communication channels. Volunteering with many different organizations
has helped me learn to communicate with different people and to help communities
large and small alike. Being bilingual and learning Spanish has helped me
communicate with many different people. On certain occasions during volunteering
I have had to serve as a translator for people.

LO Breadth of Knowledge
It is important to be knowledgeable in many different fields. This is because
knowledge helps people relate to each other and shows intellectual capacity.
Connections and comparisons between different disciplines shows that a person has
a good intellectual capacity and can think critically. They can use those skills to
learn more information about specific topics to boost their knowledge. It is very

important to apply what is learned in class to the real world because that is what
college is preparing for. I had to use various areas of studying when preparing for
the MCAT verbal section. I use classroom knowledge in my internship and research
to accomplish tasks and learn why certain things occur.

LO Personal Growth
The want to learn in me has always been something thats always been there. I get
curious about random things usually. A thought will pop up in my head and I will
start researching about it to get more information, which will lead me to look at
more things. This has helped me increase my knowledge and helps keep a balance
in learning what is taught in class and me teaching myself new things, like using
Microsoft Excel. Almost all of what I know how to do on Excel is learned. I was
taught a few things in Stats class and in Biology lab but everything else I know like
formatting a cell to perform specific calculations is stuff that I needed to learn on
my own so that I could be more productive and efficient at work. Throughout my
time at Benedictine I have taken on many roles of leadership at school and outside
of school. I have been on the board of a club, a student senator, and outside of
school I have taught and lead an organization for high school students. I have an
appreciation for art and music but I could develop it more but my creativity is a
valued trait of mine not just in an artistic sense but also in many other aspects of
problem solving.

Preparing to present yourself

Show progress-how much my work and thinking has improved

o The biggest part of learning and reflecting is to see the growth that has
occurred over a long period of time. I did not really notice how much I
had improved until I went through and looked at my work I had done
previously. I learned how to write a proper thesis. I learned that the
most important question I had to ask myself when coming up with my
argument was why. If I could answer that then I would have direction
on my paper.
Persistence-ability to stick with a project over a long period of time.
o The three things I have worked for over a long period of time are my
running, webb foundation, and mist. Running is something that has
helped me learn about patience because of injuries that I have had
that have set me back and I have had to overcome them. I have
worked with webb foundation, a faith based organization which
emphasizes community service, for 10 years, starting as a student,

then a student leader, TA, intern and a teacher. I have worked with
MIST, a competition for high school students, I have been on the
competitions committee for the past three years, revising any
competitions that need that done, also I had to help come up with
topics for some of the competitions.
Flexibility-ability to write in different styles or voices
o I have learned many different writing styles and improved upon them. I
learned how to write a narrative, autobiography, analytical, critical
thinking, reviews, articles, research papers, and I have also learned
how to communicate with peers, professor, and coworkers in a proper
manner.

Difficult LO
The Benedictine and Catholic Social Teaching learning objective was the hardest one
for me because we covered it freshman year first semester and it was covered in
my religion/ethics class second semester of freshman year and since then it has not
been covered that much. I have been to the opening mass but besides that I have
not had much exposure to it. The posts about communication were helpful. I think
all of them helped equally under communication as everyone has their own
effective means of communication. The breadth of knowledge and integrative
learning will be the LO that is improved upon the most as I am taking at literature
class and the honors humanities class will open up new experiences to me.

Revised Narrative
Walking into the worship area of St. Procopius Abbey for the DuPage Interfaith
Thanksgiving Service I was thinking to myself I wonder what is going to be
presented there. It was a dark and peaceful night, slightly chilly. I could hear and
feel the crushing of the fallen leaves as I walked from my car towards the main
entrance. From the outside the monastery didnt seem very big. It has an old small
wooden door. The buildings do not seem very tall. As I entered the lobby I noticed
that I was very dark and had low ceilings. That all changed as I walked into the
worship area of the monastery. The ceiling rose so incredibly that I had to crank my
head all the way back in order to see it completely. As I walked through the hallway
into the worship area it opened up into a massive hall. I could see why it would be
designed as such because it shows how miniscule a human is compared to God. At
the service I got to see representatives of Theosophical, Roman Catholic, Jewish,
Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, Zoroastrian, Baptist, and Bah traditions give a
short prayer. I had sat in on a First United Methodist and a Catholic religious service
before but never any of the other ones besides Islam obviously. I had an epiphany
that even though religions are all practiced in their own ways but they serve a
common purpose, which is to bring people closer in the remembrance of God. As a
result of these four events I have found an interest in attending the services of other

religions and interfaith dialogues to increase me in my knowledge and to get rid of

my ignorance and to expand my comfort zone and understanding. Also I have
learned by going to different services helps eliminate tons of stereotypes.
