Hi Guys,

Member
Join Date: Sep 2010

I have a Ultra-Hi-Definition Video which is 435 MB and 1920x1080 Resolution Video. I wanna play it in the iPad-2 which has a
Native Resolution of 1024x768. So I believe converting it will only be able to play it in iPad-2 right ?
Out of the available presets in Handbrake apart from the Preset for iPad any other preset that will give me still more rich picture
quality and at the same time play in iPad. Anything else that I can choose from the available presets which will give me further
better picture quality ? The Original Video I have is 1920x1080 so if I wanna convert it to say 1280x720 what Preset should I
choose in Handbrake ?
Thanks !

If you want an optimal picture on the iPad you use the iPad preset. If you use 1280x720, the iPad would need to scale horizontal down to
1024 and and scale vertical up to 768. Both re-scalings will lower displayed picture quality.
What is the source of this 1080p video? What frame rate? Are you certain it isn't 1080i? If so it will require deinterlace or inverse telecine.
The iPad can only handle 30p (29.97) frame rate.

If for some other reason you wanted a 1280x720 downscale, here are the settings I use as my abc/espn/fox/pbs Handbrake preset.

Frame rate and encode quality settings are under the Video tab. Constant quality default is 20. For better quality lower this number. For
smaller files increase the number.

A file created with the iPad preset will play in most other media players or on a computer.
FYI here is the tech spec for iPad video from the Apple site.
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps,
48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second,
Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion
JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

Most likely your 1080p source file is 16:9 aspect ratio or wider. The iPad screen aspect ratio is 4:3. 16:9 source will be scaled down to
1024x576 letterbox in a 1024x768 frame.

As far as I know if iPad-2 shoots video and playsback video shot in 720P will that also not make it play the 720P video ? How do I
customise the fields in the first tab that is the picture area after I have added a customised preset just the way you have added 1280 x
720 for me all the fields in the picture area are greyed out how do I get it enabled ?

So in this case where my File size is 435 MB, should I select the lowest, like 5 ?

When I imported the 1080p WMV source file into Handbrake and selected the iPad preset, these were the resulting settings.

Convert 1080P to 720P using Handbrake !

PS: The resulting file also plays in my Sony BX-37 (S370) Blu-Ray player which upscales it to 1080p. The original WMV-HD (VC-1/WMA)
file also plays in native 1080p but without audio.

1280 x 720 for me all the fields in the picture area are greyed out how do I get it enabled ?

The iPad specs (posted above) say that it will play h.264 files up to 1080p with frame rates up to 30 fps.
It will play MPeg4 (specific codecs not named) 640x480 30 fps 2.5 Mbps max.
Also MJPEG up to 1280x720 30fps 35 Mbps.
There is no support for VC-1 or wmv9/10.
You will get the best picture on the iPad if you render to native 1024x768 display resolution.

I did the whole WMV-HD to iPad thing above and it seemed to work. Beyond that I don't know what you are trying to do. You haven't
provided the mediainfo data from your source file.
In general when you open a file, Handbrake presents an automated estimate then you modify that.

Consult the user manual

https://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/HandBrakeGuide
I mostly use Handbrake to convert DTV captures to h.264. I've created presets for most broadcast formats and aspect ratios including
480i/1080i (various deinterlace or detelecine modes), 720p (various quality levels 60p/30p) and for DVD source.

How I did what? I included the Handbrake setup screens for the iPad conversion above.
Load your file under "source", select iPad preset and then push the start button.
You can download mediainfo here
http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en
After it is installed, drag your file to it, then view results as text, then cut paste info here like I did above.

If I wanna convert it to 1280 x720 there is no preset available for that. I was talking about the first 2 screenshots that you have put not
the one in which you have selected iPad as your preset, the one before that.

1. I imported a 1920x1080 60i TS source file (from CBS)

2. I typed in 1280 width and 720 Height.
3. To get the new setting to show in "Display Size" I used the up arrow on PAR Width then the down arrow.
4. Since this file is interlace, I selected the Deinterlace Slow filter. (skip this step for 1080p)
5. Under Video tab, I made no changes. But you can play with CQ, bit rate or target size.

BTW: 1280x720 is not optimal for the iPad but it should play.

The resulting 1280x720 30p file looks fairly poor at CQ RF=20. Average bit rate is 2.938 Mbps.
If you want better quality, lower the RF number to 18 or less.

Yes. That way you just scale H&V once during encoding.
1280x720 would need H downscaling in the iPad to 1024 and V upscaling 720->768.
Every time the image is scaled, the quality drops. Upscaling is particularly damaging.

Close Handbrake then open and re-import the file. The settings should be available.

If you don't use presets, you can modify at will. Maybe you need to reinstall.
