Questions

Simulation

PURPOSE
Create rigorous mathematical steady state or dynamic models for:

Equipment design
Equipment rating
Operational improvement
Process optimization

Calculate the thermodynamics of a chemical process

Generate heat & material balance

Simulation

USES
Generate h&mb

Overall plant design

Process optimization study

Generate heat curve

Determine saturated conditions
Provide physical property data

Equipment design
PSV calculations

Generate flash calculations

Simple heat transfer
Simple hydraulics

Process Flow Diagram

PURPOSE
Summarize the process design and present the basic process
equipment, process streams, operating conditions, and material
balance from which the mechanical design is based
Illustrate the basic process control scheme

Process Flow Diagram

FORMAT

PFDs may contain H&MB information, but more often use stream
numbers to reference a separate H&MB document

Project specific
Often several operating cases simulated
Utility PFDs often show only key temperatures or pressures

Process Flow Diagram

CONTENT

All major pieces of equipment

Equipment Information

Standard equipment names & numbers (match Equipment List)

Equipment name, equipment number
Static equipment info on top of page
Rotating equipment info on bottom of page
Main process parameters (project specific)
Vessels (ID & T/T length)
Rotating Equipment (flow, head, motor hp)
Heat Exchangers (duty, area)

Logical flow from left to right

Process Flow Diagram

CONTENT

Equipment depictions

Standard equipment blocks (project specific or see CADD)

Equipment type (pumps, compressors, exchangers)
Orientation (horizontal or vertical, boot)
Internals (number of trays, tray type, feed tray, weir, baffle)
Exchanger orientation (shell side, tube side)

All major process lines between equipment

Arrow heads indicate flow direction

Heavier weight lines for primary process lines
Lighter weight lines for minor process lines or utility lines

PFD Connectivity

Process connectors
Utility abbreviations

Process Flow Diagram

CONTENT
Stream numbering

Provide for inlet and outlet of all major equipment

Documentation of equipment design or rating

Process Control Scheme

Control valves (not numbered)

Simplified instrumentation (not numbered)

Notes

Clarify operating conditions

Clarify equipment design basis (2 x 100%, 2 x 50%, etc.)

Other

Line priorities

Break vertical lines that cross horizontal lines

Break instrument lines that cross process lines

Normally no flow labels (NNF)

Product analyzers

CONTENT
PFDs often do not include:

Minimum flow bypasses on pumps

Utility purge lines
Manual block valves
Vortex breakers
