AMAZinG GRACe

ePheSiAnS 2:1-10 (niV)

As for you, you were dead in your
transgressions and sins, 2in which you used
to live when you followed the ways of this
world and of the ruler of the kingdom of
the air, the spirit who is now at work in
those who are disobedient.3All of us also
lived among them at one time, gratifying
the cravings of our flesh and following its
desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were
by nature deserving of wrath. 4But because
of his great love for us, God, who is rich
in mercy, 5made us alive with Christ even
when we were dead in transgressionsit
is by grace you have been saved. 6And God
raised us up with Christ and seated us with
him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,
7
in order that in the coming ages he might
show the incomparable riches of his grace,
expressed in his kindness to us in Christ
Jesus. 8For it is by grace you have been
saved, through faithand this is not from
yourselves, it is the gift of God 9not by
works, so that no one can boast. 10For we
are Gods handiwork, created in Christ Jesus
to do good works, which God prepared in
advance for us to do.

Verse 1
Amazing grace!
How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me;
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind but now I see.
Verse 2
Twas grace that taught
my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.
Verse 3
Through many dangers,
toils and snares
I have already come;
Tis grace has brought
me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me Home.

ePheSiAnS 2:1-10 (The Message)

It wasnt so long ago that you were mired
in that old stagnant life of sin. You let the
world, which doesnt know the first thing
about living, tell you how to live. You filled

your lungs with polluted unbelief, and then
exhaled disobedience. We all did it, all of us
doing what we felt like doing, when we felt
like doing it, all of us in the same boat. Its
a wonder God didnt lose his temper and
do away with the whole lot of us. Instead,
immense in mercy and with an incredible
love, he embraced us. He took our sin-dead
lives and made us alive in Christ. He did
all this on his own, with no help from us!
Then he picked us up and set us down in
highest heaven in company with Jesus, our
Messiah.
Now God has us where he wants us,
with all the time in this world and the next
to shower grace and kindness upon us in
Christ Jesus. Saving is all his idea, and all
his work. All we do is trust him enough to
let him do it. Its Gods gift from start to
finish! We dont play the major role. If we
did, wed probably go around bragging that
wed done the whole thing! No, we neither
make nor save ourselves. God does both
the making and saving. He creates each of
us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he
does, the good work he has gotten ready
for us to do, work we had better be doing.

live like people of this world. You followed

the rule of a destructive spiritual power.
This is the spirit of disobedience to Gods
will that is now at work in persons whose
lives are characterized by disobedience. 3At
one time you were like those persons. All
of you used to do whatever felt good and
whatever you thought you wanted so that
you were children headed for punishment
just like everyone else.
However, God is rich in mercy. He brought
us to life with Christ while we were dead as
a result of those things that we did wrong.
He did this because of the great love that
he has for us. You are saved by Gods grace!
6
And God raised us up and seated us in the
heavens with Christ Jesus. 7God did this
to show future generations the greatness
of his grace by the goodness that God has
shown us in Christ Jesus.
4-5

You are saved by Gods grace because of

your faith. This salvation is Gods gift. Its
not something you possessed. 9Its not
something you did that you can be proud
of. 10Instead, we are Gods accomplishment,
created in Christ Jesus to do good things.
God planned for these good things to be
the way that we live our lives.

A Word From The Pastor

21

They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus

went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22The people were
amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had
authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23Just then a man in
their synagogue who was possessed by
an impure spirit cried out,
24

What do you want with us,

Jesus of Nazareth? Have you

come to destroy us? I know who
you arethe Holy One of God!
25

Be quiet! said

Jesus sternly.
Come out
of him!
26

The impure

spirit shook the

man violently and
came out of him with a shriek.

A Word From The Pastor

The Vision: A Christ-Centered Church
Pastoral Vision for 21st Century Ministry
i. A Christ-Centered Church

A WoRD FRoM The PASToR

We are called to be a Christ-centered church. Our public and private lives are ever
seeking to be in line with the unconditional love of God embodied through the person
of Jesus Christ. In order to reach this goal, we are called to practice, live, and teach the
power of prayer and fasting. This vision can only be realized through the teaching of the
Word of God and active participation in Bible study.
A Christ-centered church teaches with authority
A Christ-centered church Is honest in admitting there is hell in holy places
A Christ-centered church looks beyond the problem to see the person
A Christ-centered church ministers with compassion

Our Reset focus for 1Q 2015 is on this first point of our Vision, A Christ-Centered
Church.
Questions for all of us to consider:
1. Am I currently in a Bible study so I can learn to teach with authority?
2. What is the hell in your life that is holding you hostage from a holy encounter?
3. When were you faced with a person with a problem, but were unable to see the
person created by God because of your focus on their problem/issue?
4. If you were given a second chance, how would you deal with them today?
5. When were you on the receiving end on a great act of compassion? How did it
make you feel?
6. How are you contributing to making Trinity a Christ-centered church?
7. What will you do this week to demonstrate compassion to a person in need?

this Quarter's book (and a personal favorite of Pastor Moss!),

As part of the growing literature on theology and the arts, god's mind
ind in That music
explores the substantial theological insight expressed in the music of jazz legend John Coltrane.
Focusing on eight of Coltrane's pieces, themes under consideration include lament ("Alabama"),
improvisation ("My Favorite Things" and "Ascension"), grace ("A Love Supreme"), and the Trinity ("The
Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost"). Built around a focused listening to John Coltrane's music as
heard against the background of his life and social context, and interacting with the work of a range of
writers including James Baldwin, Dorothee Soelle, Jeremy Begbie, and James Cone, god's mind in that
music will be of interest not only to those interested in the intersection of music and theology, but also
to Coltrane fans, students of jazz studies, and anyone who believes that music matters.

Maafa 2015
Journey of Remembrance
During the month of February, as the nation celebrates Black
History Month, Trinity United Church of Christ takes this time to
inform, educate and . . . remember, the Maafa.
Make plans now to be in the house of the Lord each Sunday in February,
and remember to invite your friends and family, as the Trinity Sanctuary
is converted into the Amistad. You will be transported through worship,
song, dance, prayer and sermonic theme, from the shores of western
Africa, the plantations of the Caribbean, to the port of New Orleans, and
through the great migration north to cities such as St. Louis, Chicago,
Detroit, and New York.
