Mercy and Compassion Pope Francis Visits the Philippines January 15-19
Since last year the Philippines has been very excited and busy preparing for the visit of Pope
Francis this year. After super hurricane Haiyan hit my island in Leyte in November 2013,
where thousands of people were reported dead and thousands more injured and homeless, the
Pope expressed his intention to visit the area. This is the main reason for his visit which
explains the theme Mercy and Compassion. He arrived in Manila direct from his visit in
Sri Lanka January 15 at 5:25 in the afternoon. The bells of all the Churches throughout the
nation ring as his plane landed at the airport where about a hundred thousand were already
crowded to greet him. As he emerged from the plane, he was greeted by government officials
and Church dignitaries, while thousands of students from nearby parishes performed a song
and dance on the side of the tarmac. On the motorcade to the Philippine Nunciature, his
official residence in the country, around a million were lined up on the route (about 6.9 miles)
to get a glimpse of him and receive his blessings. During his visit, his itinerary includes:
Welcome Ceremony at the Office of the President, a mass at the Cathedral, and meeting with
families in the afternoon. Saturday he is in my home island in Leyte. He will celebrate the
mass in an open field where a million people are expected to attend. This is followed by lunch
for the poor and survivors of calamities, then later during the day is the blessing of the Pope
Francis Center for the Poor funded by a donation from the Vatican, and right after that will
be the meeting with priests, consecrated persons, seminarians, and families of Hurricane
Haiyan survivors. The following day he is back in Manila. He will be celebrating an outdoor
mass in the biggest outdoor field in Manila where an estimated 5 million faithful will be
accommodated. He will also visit the University of Santo Tomas (the university from which I
graduated) where he is scheduled to meet the youth. This university is the oldest in Asia being
established in 1611 and has the mandate of the Pope. Hence it is called a Pontifical university.
There was a report that a religious organization commissioned a well known artist to paint
Pope Francis surrounded by a group of Filipinos. The painting is entitled Salubong or
Welcome. However, the people used as models for the painting were prominent and famous
Filipinos politicians, actors/actresses, prominent businessmen. The report said that the Pope
politely refused the painting, saying I would rather be painted with the poor and unknown
people in the Philippine society. I wish I was there, especially being he will be in my island!
Priests from my diocese, including my nephew who is a priest in Leyte, will certainly get a
chance to get closer to him, much more get a selfie with the Pope. But I am happy for them.
It is indeed a great blessing for them. Please include the success of the Popes visit in your
prayers! Viva Il Papa!

A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up
throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer,
may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from
every Christian community, from every group and association, from
every family and from the heart of every believer. - Pope Saint John
Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, no. 100.
Those words ring true still today. January 22, 2015 will mark 42
years of legal abortion in the Unites States of America. This day
means time for prayer and witness to express our outrage to this
horrific tragedy in our country. Please continue to include this
intention in your prayers for an end to abortion, particularly the
reversal of the law, and also for the safety for all those who will be
joining the march in Topeka and Washington, DC.
In the past years, it has been our practice to print a summary of all
parishioners contribution. This is primarily done as many of you
use it for the filing of your income tax. I have observed however, for
several years now that there are lots of envelopes left at the entrance
unclaimed, which certainly means these parishioners dont need it.
Because of this, I decided to change our system this year. We will no
longer print all of them as practiced. If you need your summary
contribution you have two options: there is a sign up sheet at the
entrance of the Church, kindly write your name, or you can call the
parish office and leave your name and we can print and mail your
summary. This way we can save time and resources. Thank you for
your understanding.
Thank you!
Thank you to all who stayed last Sunday and helped us take down
our Christmas decorations: Nancy Hofer, Denny Heidrick, the Paoni
Family Dr. Adam, Faith, and Teddy, and Doug and Marita
Lopeman. Though there were only a few of them, they managed to
take all the decorations down and store them for next year. God bless
you all! Fr. Roger
For those of you who are beginning to make summer plans, save the
dates of June 14 through 19 for Totus Tuus! Thank you to Paula
Sevart, Totus Tuus coordinator, for reserving our week.
If you are interested in having Masses said for your loved ones,
please call the parish office to schedule them. We have lots of
openings, but if you have a specific date you want, the sooner you call
the better. We fill the Masses on a first come, first served basis. Also,
as a reminder, the Mass stipend is now $10.00 per Mass. You can also
put your Mass requests in the collection basket--please put your
name, the name of theperson the Mass is intended for, the date, and
the stipend in an envelope clearly marked Mass intention. Thank
you.
