INTRODUCTION
A skeleton in the closet can be found in the hospital setting. Hospital-acquired diseases,
poor appetite, taste alterations and fatigue may accompany a patient once admitted.
Because of the change in environment, it may or may not affect ones health status.
Food intake of the patient is a major consideration in the hospital. Some tests or
procedures may limit the diet of the patient to avoid interfering with the results. The
after-effects of other procedures can alter the patients sense of taste. Others just do not
have a big of an appetite to finish their food.
The goal of the clinical dietitians is to gradually help bring back the appetite of
hospitalized patients by providing nutritious and palatable meals with the proper
planning of dishes. Aside from offering food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, patients
with specific diets are also given snacks two or three times a day.
Snacks, as defined by the Oxford Dictionary, are a small portion of food eaten between
meals and, therefore, could technically include all types of food in small quantities.
The Ministry of Justice New Zealand has proposed a list of potential ready-to-eat
prepared foods for inclusion in the definition, but this will not be a prescriptive list.
The elements that are proposed to form the regulation defining snack food are:
a. has characteristics of a food normally considered to be a snack food (that is,
small proportions and eaten between meals) AND
b. is prepared food sold in a form for immediate consumption AND
c. includes but is not limited to:
potato chips, crisps, sticks or straws, corn crisps or chips, pretzels and other
similar products
bacon or pork crackling or prawn chips / and other similar products
ice-cream, ice-cream cakes, ice-creams and ice-cream substitutes, sold as
individual items
food known as muesli bars or health food bars, and similar foodstuffs sold as
individual items
food that is, or consists principally of, biscuits, cookies, crackers, pretzels,
cones or wafers sold as individual items or as part of a snack pack product
seeds or nuts that have been processed or treated by salting, spicing,
smoking or roasting, or in any other similar way sold in quantities less than
50gms
popcorn

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

(WHY IS THE HOSPITAL GIVING SNACKS FOR PATIENTS? CONCERNS IN GIVING
SNACKS TO PATIENTS ESP. THOSE WITH SPECIFIED DIETS. WHY IS THERE A
NEED TO REVIEW THE EXISTING SNACKS CYCLE MENU?)

THE IMPORTANCE OF SNACKS

Consuming snacks is an effective way to provide extra nutrients to your body and
prevent you for eating too much at mealtimes. Based on a study from The Journal of
Nutrition conducted in 2010, 97 percent of Americans snack, with almost 24 percent of
their calories coming from snacks.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SNACKING?

Prevents Overeating
Snacking helps keep you from getting overly hungry in between meals and then
overeating at your next meal. So next time you start to feel hungry a couple
hours before lunch or dinner, don't try to wait until the meal. Instead, eat a small
healthy snack to tide you over.

Keeps Blood Sugar Levels Steady

Healthy snacking helps keep your blood sugar levels even, especially if you eat a
consistent amount of carbs at each meal or snack. This is especially helpful for
diabetics, but also beneficial for people without diabetes, since large spikes and
dips in blood sugar levels may make insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes, obesity,
heart disease and high blood pressure more likely over time.

Provides Nutrients
As long as you choose nutritious snacks, snacking will also help you meet your
nutrient needs for the day. Most of your snacks should consist of nutrient-dense
foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy and nuts or seeds.

Considerations
Don't snack right before a meal, and only eat a snack if you are truly hungry.
Snacking out of boredom or for other emotional reasons isn't healthy and can
lead to overeating and weight gain. Most snacks should be around 100 calories,

but if you need to use a snack in place of a meal, eat a slightly larger snack
containing about 250 calories, recommends MayoClinic.com.

WHO ARE GIVEN SNACKS IN THE HOSPITAL?

Diabetics

SNACKING WHEN YOU HAVE DIABETES

When you have diabetes, you need to control your blood sugar. Insulin or diabetes
medicines, as well as exercise, will lower your blood sugar.
To balance this, the food you eat will raise your blood sugar. The three major nutrients in
food are carbohydrates, protein, and fat.
Your body quickly turns carbohydrates into a sugar called glucose. This raises your
blood sugar level. Carbohydrates are found in fruit, cereal, bread, pasta, and rice.
Protein and fat can change your blood sugar too, but not as fast.
If you have diabetes, you need to know how to eat carbohydrate snacks during the day.
This will help balance your blood sugar. This is especially important if you have type 1
diabetes.
Learning how to count the carbohydrates that you eat helps you plan what to eat. It will
also keep your blood sugar under control.
Your health care provider may tell you to eat a snack at certain times of the day, most
often at bedtime. This helps keep your blood sugar from getting too low at night. Other
times, you may have a snack before or during exercise for the same reason. Ask your
health care provider about the snacks you can have.
You will also need to ask about what snacks to avoid. You also need to know how to
control your diabetes when you do snack.

Wheat germ, Vitamins & minerals (A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, Calcium carbonate, Iodine
(Potassium Iodide) 7 Iron (Ferric pyrophosphate)), Leavening/raising agents
(Ammonium hydrogen bicarbonate (E503ii), Sodium hydrogen bicarbonate (E500ii),
Potassium bicarbonate (E501ii)), Yeast, Emulsifier (Sodium stearoyl lactylate (E481i)),
Salt and enzyme/flour treatment agent (Amylase). May contain milk.

ANALYSIS: Jacobs cracker is initially good to use as a snack for therapeutic

patients. Based from the current cycle menu, Jacobs cracker is given to all patients
who have snacks specifically to those with dairy restrictions. However, as seen on
the packaging of the product, it is produced in a factory handling milk and can
therefore be mixed with the product itself, which is contradicting to the planning on
no dairy patients.

ANALYSIS: Jello gelatin dessert is for patients in regular liquid diets. However, it is
not recommended for those who are diabetic since it has sugar as its ingredients. If
used as snacks for patients who are in regular diets, it would be better if cooked
fruits are incorporated in the jello to make it more appetizing for patients.
