INTRODUCTION
A skeleton in the closet can be found in the hospital setting. Hospital-acquired diseases,
poor appetite, taste alterations and fatigue may accompany a patient once admitted.
Because of the change in environment, it may or may not affect ones health status.
Food intake of the patient is a major consideration in the hospital. Some tests or
procedures may limit the diet of the patient to avoid interfering with the results. The
after-effects of other procedures can alter the patients sense of taste. Others just do not
have a big of an appetite to finish their food.
The goal of the clinical dietitians is to gradually help bring back the appetite of
hospitalized patients by providing nutritious and palatable meals with the proper
planning of dishes. Aside from offering food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, patients
with specific diets are also given snacks two or three times a day.
Snacks, as defined by the Oxford Dictionary, are a small portion of food eaten between
meals and, therefore, could technically include all types of food in small quantities.
The Ministry of Justice New Zealand has proposed a list of potential ready-to-eat
prepared foods for inclusion in the definition, but this will not be a prescriptive list.
The elements that are proposed to form the regulation defining snack food are:
a. has characteristics of a food normally considered to be a snack food (that is,
small proportions and eaten between meals) AND
b. is prepared food sold in a form for immediate consumption AND
c. includes but is not limited to:
potato chips, crisps, sticks or straws, corn crisps or chips, pretzels and other
similar products
bacon or pork crackling or prawn chips / and other similar products
ice-cream, ice-cream cakes, ice-creams and ice-cream substitutes, sold as
individual items
food known as muesli bars or health food bars, and similar foodstuffs sold as
individual items
food that is, or consists principally of, biscuits, cookies, crackers, pretzels,
cones or wafers sold as individual items or as part of a snack pack product
seeds or nuts that have been processed or treated by salting, spicing,
smoking or roasting, or in any other similar way sold in quantities less than
50gms
popcorn
Prevents Overeating
Snacking helps keep you from getting overly hungry in between meals and then
overeating at your next meal. So next time you start to feel hungry a couple
hours before lunch or dinner, don't try to wait until the meal. Instead, eat a small
healthy snack to tide you over.
Provides Nutrients
As long as you choose nutritious snacks, snacking will also help you meet your
nutrient needs for the day. Most of your snacks should consist of nutrient-dense
foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy and nuts or seeds.
Considerations
Don't snack right before a meal, and only eat a snack if you are truly hungry.
Snacking out of boredom or for other emotional reasons isn't healthy and can
lead to overeating and weight gain. Most snacks should be around 100 calories,
but if you need to use a snack in place of a meal, eat a slightly larger snack
containing about 250 calories, recommends MayoClinic.com.

ANALYSIS: Jello sugar-free gelatin dessert is a very good snack for all therapeutic
patients as it is low in calories and sodium. This is especially recommended for
diabetic patients who are currently in liquid diets.

ANALYSIS: Jello gelatin dessert is for patients in regular liquid diets. However, it is
not recommended for those who are diabetic since it has sugar as its ingredients. If
used as snacks for patients who are in regular diets, it would be better if cooked
fruits are incorporated in the jello to make it more appetizing for patients.
