Module 6
Written Assignment
Goal:
Students will be engaged in collaborative problem solving and will gain 21st century
skills to increase student achievement. This will be addressed by implementing projectbased learning and increasing student technology use in the classroom.
Objectives:
By June 2016, students and teachers at Knapp Elementary will increase the use of
technology in K-2 classrooms to improve student achievement by:
1. Increasing student access and use of technology from sixty minutes per
week to a minimum of three hundred minutes per week, or sixty minutes each
day.
Methods:
Implementing the one-to-one initiative in the classroom will allow for students to
have more access to technology. Providing access to technology will allow for the use of
instructional tools including, but not limited to, the use of Google Apps for studentstudent and student-teacher collaboration as well as individualized web-based
applications such as Odyssey Compass Learning for English Language Arts and Math,
ST Math, and First in Math.
2. Implementing project-based learning in K-2 classrooms.
Methods:

Project-based learning is an instructional model that allows students to discover

and apply new knowledge while responding to a complex question, problem, or
challenge. Essential elements of project-based learning include rigorous content derived
from the standards, 21st century skills, in-depth inquiry, a driving question, an entry
event that provides background knowledge and provides a purpose for the project,
student voice and choice, revision and critique, and a public audience to share the final
product. Through this teaching model, students will learn essential 21st century skills
such as problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity
and innovation. Project-based learning allows students to meet the rigor and demands
of the Common Core State Standards while producing artifacts to demonstrate their
learning and understanding.
Project-based learning will be implemented by providing professional
development opportunities for teachers to understand the shifts required by the
Common Core State Standards, to develop project-based learning units that are aligned
to the Common Core State Standards, and to successfully implement project-based
learning in the classroom.
3. Improving student academic performance in English Language Arts and
Math on state and district assessments (PALS, NWEA MAP) by fifty percent.
Methods:
Student achievement will improve when they are engaged in learning
opportunities that meet the demands and rigor of the Common Core State Standards.
The implementation of one-to-one technology devices will allow for students to
consistently meet minimum time requirements on the web-based individualized

applications (Odyssey Compass Learning for English Language Arts and Math, ST
Math, and First in Math). In addition, students will be able to use technology devices to
engage in learning opportunities that will allow them to build skills to prepare them for
future success including collaborative projects through the use of Google Apps and
through the implementation of project-based learning. All of these things together will
help to improve student achievement on state and district tests.
