Wild about life

DONNA Zabinskas is Moorabool Shire Councils 2015

Citizen of the Year.
Ms Zabinskas founded the wildlife rescue organisation
BADGAR (Ballarat and District Greendale Animal
Rescue) 17 years ago and has helped rescue, rehabilitate
and release tens of thousands of native animals including
koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, raptors, birds
and more.
Its a real honour and extremely unexpected. Therere
so many other people worthy of it (Citizen of the Year),
Ms Zabinskas said.
Although she started the shelter with her family,
BADGAR now has 12 animal foster carers and five
dedicated volunteers who work from the not-for-profit
organisations headquarters in Greendale.
Its a beautiful group of people Im working with. Its
like one big happy family, she said.
She said BADGAR managed on average four or five
phone calls every day, but during busier periods it rose to
20 30 calls, including calls from Ballarat and Melbourne.
She works closely with the CFA, Parks Victoria and
DEPI to co-ordinate wildlife rescue throughout bushfire
emergencies and trains people all over Victoria in
wildlife rescue and fireground rescue. Generally my
only holidays are going out to different firegrounds, she
said.
As well as her involvement with wildlife, Ms Zabinskas
is the 3rd lieutenant at Greendale CFA, the secretary/
treasurer of the Greendale Fire Brigade support group
and has worked for the Department of Human Services
as a carer for the intellectually disabled for 30 years.
She said she kept going because she was passionate
about animal welfare and knowing that theres an
animal in need.
All the people around me also keep me going. Ive
always been community minded. I just think that people
should be involved. If they are then the community is
better off. There are some really good people in Moorabool
Shire. My neighbours are really tolerant, considerate and
passionate about wildlife, she said.
The apple doesnt fall far from the tree for this motherof-three. Her adult children have forged careers as a zoo
keeper, a vet nurse/practice manager and a CFA captain/
builder.

owner Matthew Prince is
Moorabool Shire Councils
Young Citizen of the Year for
2015.
The 24-year-old was nominated by family friend
Raelene Hawkins for helping to change the lives of
young people in Moorabool
through his health and fitness business Royale Fitness,
which aimed to improve
health, wellbeing and selfesteem in people.
I thought he was very inspiring and worked very
hard. He is what he walks
and talks, Mrs Hawkins
said.

to promote kids fitness. This

program assists in the development of relationships with
peers and helps to reduce
the amount of bullying by
emphasising team work and
respect through health and
fitness.
Matthew began his business out of his mothers garage and now runs two Royale Fitness gyms with a team
of four his fiance Chantal,
Ashby, James and Lisa and
has 210 clients each week.
He said a lot of his motivation came about following
the death of his younger
brother Nathan in 2011. After he died it took me a few

months to pull myself out

of a slump, and I realised
I could be negative or do
something positive.
He said Royale Fitness focussed on creating a positive
culture for clients through a
good screening process.
Were pretty particular on
who comes into Royale Fitness. We will bring in people
who want to do the work.
We want to create a win-win
atmosphere for our clients
and trainers, he said.
I do a lot of videoing and
writing about nutritional
and training advice to help
people stay motivated.

Court in action
By Jessica Howard
A Bacchus Marsh woman
who was close to eight times
over the legal blood alcohol
limit, has lost her license for
a period of four years. Jacqueline Allen, 38, admitted
to consuming two bottles
of vodka before travelling
down the Western Highway and crashing into a
guardrail on April 9, 2014.
Police were contacted after
concerned drivers witnessed

the accused swerving between lanes. Allen was intercepted near Wallace, where a
blood alcohol sample of .388
was registered. She pleaded
guilty to drink driving, failing to wear a seatbelt and
dangerous driving, and received a 12-month community corrections order with
conviction.

Meanwhile, a Bacchus
Marsh dog owner may be
charged with breaching the

Domestic Animals Act, after

his two Staffordshire Terriers allegedly attacked an
alpaca, resulting in its death.
The two dogs, which were
not legally registered under
the Moorabool Shire council, were seen attacking the
alpaca in June 2014, shortly
before it was euthanised
due to horrific wounds. The
dog owners defence lawyer
stated that the identity of the
animals had, and could not
be 100 per cent proven. The

Alleged Gordon arsonist,

Robert Wallace has been
granted a further adjournment in order to finalise his
psychiatric analysis. Wallace will plead guilty to one
charge of arson after attempting to set the Gordon
General Store on fire in 2014,
and will appear at the Sunshine Magistrate Court on
February 3.

Users fight council for

use of lane
By Kate Taylor
Nearly one hundred users
of a lane have signed a petition asking council to cancel
an agricultural licence in
Myrniong.
The Wednesday 3 December council meeting saw
councillors vote to officially
receive the petition and have
council officers prepare a report on the issue.
The 96 users of the section
of Lohs Lane in Myrniong,
which is under the licence
area, signed the petition

which also came with three

letters of support from emergency service agencies.
A resolution from a council
meeting in May 2014 reads
That Council considers it
not desirable or in the public
interest that (the agricultural
licence) be cancelled.
The signatories on the petition are requesting that
Council consider declaring
that Lohs Lane is not an unused road, stating that they
have a legitimate purpose to
use the road and require unobstructed 24/7 access.

President Joel Murphy (background). Photo Helen Tatchell

On May 10, 2014 Dunne

was playing for Dunnstown
against Springbank when
he was injured during an
unintentional collision. The
accident left him with a spinal injury and symptoms
including intense pain in his
neck and lower back and no
feeling in his lower legs.
Eight months later he has
surpassed doctors expectations and walks unassisted
despite still no feeling in his
lower legs.
The pain is still the same
and not getting any better,
but Im doing rehabilitation
and trying to get into the
Ballan Hospitals rehab centre every day. I want to keep
proving them all wrong, he
said.
Dunnstown Football Club
president Joel Murphy said
former
Under-18
coach

Johnno Leoncini had moved

to a role in the Central Highlands Football League as interleague coordinator for the
Under-17s.
Its great to have Cam back.
He was a very good footballer, Murphy said.
Matt is new to the club
and has a terrific football
background
playing
in
premierships at Skipton and
coaching the reserves in the
Maryborough league.
Andy Peterkin is also the
new coach for Dunnstowns
Under-15 football team.
Murphy said: Andy has
been involved in the junior program for quite some
time and will no doubt be a
huge asset in building on the
skills of our young players.
Hes really good with the
young kids.

Moorabool residents are

being warned about Bathurst Burr and its not
the sound that V8 Supercars
make as they race around Mt

Its a nasty weed that
comes up after good summer rain, explained Moorabool Landcare Network Facilitator Max Coster.
With close to 75mm of rain
dumped around Moorabool
in the last two weeks Mr
Coster said that its not a
weed to mess with.
Bathurst Burr has vicious spikes that can cause
animals to go lame, it is a

Spokesperson for the Bacchus Marsh SES unit Bill

The single vehicle incident

last Tuesday on the Bacchus

lost in the
Lerderderg
A very dehydrated 43 year
old Roxburgh Park woman,
not wearing shoes, has been
found by campers in the Lerderderg State Forest.

Missing for three days,

police said emergency service crews stretchered the
woman out of the forest to
waiting ambulance crews
around 11.30am on Sunday
18 January.

The area is pretty rough

and the track was also pretty
slippery and not very well
defined.

Search and Rescue crews,

that included two vehicles
from the Bacchus Marsh
SES, reached the woman on
Sunday morning around
8.30am, after responding at

2am.

Bill Robson from BM SES

said the terrain in that area
was steep and rough resulting in a very challenging
and time consuming rescue
operation.

Crews used a specialist

pulley system supplied by
Victoria Police, as well as
man power to get the patient
to safety.
The Rescue spanned several hours and was exhausting for all crews involved,
he said.

The woman was taken to

the Northern Hospital in a
stable condition after suffering from exposure and
minor injuries.

Dr Christine Durham is the 2015 Australia Day ambassador for Moorabool.

Dr Durham will visit Moorabool Shire
at the Australia Day celebrations to be
held at the Public Hall, Bacchus Marsh
on January 26, 2015 as part of the Australia Day ambassador program.
Dr Durham was named the 2014 Victorian Senior Australian of the Year. The
life of this gifted teacher was turned
upside down after she sustained a
severe brain injury in a car accident.
Determined to return to teaching, she
used her experience of acquiring a
brain injury to inspire her students to

think. Her pioneering approach and

subsequent book, Chasing Ideas, led
her to gain an international reputation
as a professional learning presenter.
Dr Durham also wrote an autobiography, Doing Up Buttons, which was a
deeply personal yet practical account
of acquired brain injury. At age 67, she
completed a Doctor of Philosophy at
RMIT University, examining ways to
empower people with acquired brain
injury.
Moorabool Shire mayor Paul Tatchell
said Dr Christine Durham would play
an important role in local celebrations.

Volunteer auditor
acknowledged

Nick Myrianthis received his award from (L-R) Mayor Paul Tatchell, Cr. John Spain and Cr.
Tonia Dudzik at the December meeting.
By Kate Taylor
Bacchus Marsh local Nick
Myrianthis has been presented with a Certificate of
Appreciation for his work
for a council committee.
Mayor Paul Tatchell presented Mr Myrianthis with
the acknowledgment, at the
December council meeting,
for his dedication and commitment to the Audit and
Risk Advisory Committee.
But for Mr Myrianthis it
was all in a days work he
already volunteers on the
Greendale Reserve Committee, on school boards and

also served as Treasurer on

the Ballan Kindergarten
Committee.
I was reported to external
and internal audit bodies of
the council, as well as risk
management reports I then
provided advice and recommendations, he said of his
role.
Well qualified for the job,
Mr Myrianthis is an accountant who had served
as an auditor at the Auditor
Generals office, as well as
auditing for Victoria Police.
Having served 10 years on
the committee, he has now

moved on since being replaced in the paid role as his

personal work has evolved
into his own accounting
and bookkeeping business
Nick Myrianthis Accounting Services - which he runs
from his home, and which is
a bit removed from the auditing area.
I was quite excited - it was
a bit hard leaving the role,
but I felt appreciated for the
work that I did.
I like the idea of helping
out in the community, it just
makes you feel like youre a
part of it.

Dear Editor,
On behalf of The Salvation
Army, Id like to take this opportunity to thank everyone
in the local Moorabool community for their support this
Christmas. Thank you to
local businesses and members of the community who
volunteered their time at
Christmas lunches, collected

donations or gave financially. Your generosity allowed

us to assist 300,000 people

in more than 8,000 meals on
Christmas Day with people
in our community with nowhere to celebrate.
This year Victorians also
kindly donated 99,090 gifts

Army to help brighten the
Christmas of individuals
and families in need.
Thank you for your ongoing
support to allow The Salvation Army to do its work.

Aussie has the

taste for TV

By Renee Robinson

BACCHUS Marsh motherof-three Dyna Eldaief has

become an international
television star on The Taste
Middle East.
Mrs Eldaief is currently appearing on Al Nahar television across the Middle East
as a cooking contestant on
the popular reality television series.
Up until they sent me a
plane ticket two days before
I flew out (September 30,
2014), I thought it was all a
hoax, Mrs Eldaief said.
The media company pursued me for about a year, but
I kept ignoring them because
I thought it was a hoax. Then
after I had my third baby
and had just come home,
I was up at 2am and got a
phone call from Lebanon.
She said her parents were
both Egyptian and she
wanted to document her
mothers recipes before she
passed away in 2005. She
then started posting YouTube clips and blog posts of
those family recipes, which
caught the attention of the
Lebanese television production team.
Mum never operated off
recipes, just out of her head,

so it took me ten years to collect the recipes, she said.

Normally there is an application process for the show,
but I was head-hunted.
She said the show was delayed for about eight months
because of extremist group
activity in the Middle East,
and for the safety of everyone it was filmed in Cairo,
Egypt instead of Lebanon.
Mrs Eldaief became one of
35 contestants on the show
which included competitors from Lebanon, Tunisia,
Egypt, Jordan and Saudi
Arabia.
Even though I was born in
Australia, during the whole
show I said I was EgyptianAustralian. My language
was a major barrier because
I didnt speak Arabic until I had my first child and
wanted to speak it to him.
My verbal Arabic is very basic. I couldnt even read my
contract and had to wait for
my dad to read it for me,
she said.
She said during filming
her peripheral senses became heightened because
of the language barrier and
she became very flexible,
even though I normally like
things to be planned.
I made it through the live

auditions and through the

first two group and solo
challenges, when they were
down to about 14 contestants, she said.
It was just surreal, crazy
and awesome. The best
thing about it was the people that I met. We still keep
in touch. People were so interested in Australia and it
really surprised me. I was
so happy to hear how much
they liked Australia and the
people here.
Mrs Eldaief said she flew
home on October 24 and the
program began airing on
Egyptian prime time television on Boxing Day.
Im really excited by it.
Its a life-changer. This sort
of thing doesnt happen to
people like me. The friends
I made in Egypt tell me that
Im really liked over there,
she said.
She said the experience had
encouraged her to pursue
her dreams of publishing
a cookbook of her mothers
recipes.
Its just about doing something and once you start you
never know where it will
lead. You really shouldnt hit
stop just because someone
says what youre doing is too
niche.

Residents of Roch Court and Blow Court in Ballan held an inaugural Christmas street party
on December 22, with up to 45 people attending.
Organisers Bridget Sims and Noela Kersley did a letterbox drop for residents and set up
tables and chairs to encourage residents to come out and mingle.
Ms Sims said some residents had lived in the streets for five years while others had recently
moved there and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Well look at doing something like this again, she said.

www.arbeerealestate.com.au

Homeowners planning to
break out the tool box and
spend the summer on DIY
household
improvements
often think they are adding
value to their home.
But inferior DIY work can
not only make a poor first
impression, but have buyers
worrying about what else
has been poorly done. And
DIY done well will not add
value if the home is overcapitalised that is, more spent
on it than could be recouped
in a sale.
The popularity of DIY has
increased as a result of our
love affair with home improvement programs such
as The Block and House
Rules. Business information analysts, Ibisworld, last
year forecast that within five
years Australians would be
spending more than $60 billion a year on home renovation and maintenance. Already spending figures are
close to $55 billion a year.
The analysts said the hardware store sector would
grow most, with projected
growth of 16 per cent. Kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor
areas are most commonly
upgraded.
A recent British survey has
found that poor DIY can
knock up to 11 per cent off
the selling price of a home,

with nine out of 10 homebuyers saying they would

lower their offer if they spotted botched home improvements. Translating those figures to Victoria, that would
mean up to $35,000 off the
regional Victorian median
house price of $324,000 and
about $70,000 off the Melbourne median house price
of $649,000.
A key lesson is that work
should be done well if it is
to add value to a home. That
means being sure you have
the skills and experience for
the tasks and, if not, getting
professional tradespeople to
do the work. Also, it is not
cost-effective and is potentially dangerous to attempt
work such as wiring and
major plumbing jobs.
Real estate agents regularly
see the results of the how
hard can it be? This ranges
from poor painting, often
the result of poor preparation; dangerous decks and
fences with poor joinery
and often lacking planning
permission to second-rate
kitchen and bathroom tiling
and even home-done electrical jobs.
They also see the result of
overcapitalising, so it is important to check with your
local real estate agent that
planned work will increase
the price of your home.
But DIY can be fun and satisfying and can add value
to your home if it is done
well. YouTube is a valuable
source of tutorials about everything from preparation for
painting to tiling. The right
tools for the job and a couple
of hours on the computer
can mean the difference between a second-rate finish
and a professional look and
enthusiastic buyers.

Why More RAM is better

When it comes to improving the performance of your

What does RAM do?

AUTOMOTIVE

Your computer uses Random Access Memory (RAM) to

hold program code and process instructions that you
give your software when computing. When you turn your
computer off, RAM loses the data that was used during
the computing session. When you restart your computer
the data from the operating system and the programs
you start is once again loaded into the computers RAM.

The more RAM the better performance. It pays to have

as much RAM as your computer can cope with. All

BATCHELOR, Lesley
The Ballan Community House has lost one of its longstanding and committed volunteers. Lesley Batchelor
led the Watercolour Group at the House for many years.
She encouraged and taught her students always with
wit and enthusiasm. Lesley was a friend to many in the
Ballan and Ballarat Communities.
The Committee of Management, the members and the
staff and volunteers of the Ballan & District Community
House would like to express their sadness at Lesleys
passing.

Big day in
Gippsland

The Warragul meeting held

on Monday January 12 was
good for Bacchus Marsh
and Melton, with four of the
eight winners coming from
the area.
Parwan
trainer
Craig
Demmler and reinswoman
partner Jodi Quinlan recorded a terrific victory with
much improved five year old
Art Major/Her Sparky Self
gelding Intergalactic in the
Warragul Sporting & Social
Club Pace for C4 to C6 class
over 2210 metres.
Despite being very wide
on the final bend, Intergalactic ran home strongly to
score by 1.9 metres from
Princeofthieves
(one/one)
and Jeans Mattjesty which
trailed the pacemaker, using
the sprint lane to no avail.
The mile rate 1-58.7.
Hopetoun Park duo Ross
and Greg Sugars have a great
record at Warragul meetings
and landed the Jacob Mccallef Pace for C1 class over
2210 metres with consistent

four year old Armbro Operative/Visual Reality gelding Montu in a rate of two
minutes even.
Taken wide on the home
turn, Montu finished full
of running to register a 4.5
metre margin over Bobby
Fabulous which kept giving
under hard driving, with
Apollo Thirteen holding
down third.
Youthful Rockbank reinswoman Taylah Schembri
brought up her first winner,
when successful aboard the
Gaita Pullicino (Rockbank)
owned and trained Wilcos
Cosby/Longtan
Sultress
eight year old gelding Longtan Tigerman in the Happy
50th David Gower Pace for C1
class over 1790 metres.
Long Forest husband and
wife Andy and Kate Gath
snared the winningformula.
net.au 3-Y-0 Pace over 1790
metres with Looks Like
Heaven, a filly by Lombo
Mandingo from Liberty
Belle Lombo in a mile rate of
1-59.8.
Leading out from gate
three, Looks Like Heaven
always had the race in her
keeping, scoring by 8.5 metres over Bad Boy Cullen and
Madam Miranda.
At Geelong on Tuesday,
Toolern Vale trainer Gary
Hoban and reinsman son
Craig could be excused for
shedding a tear or two when

Modern Art/Sierra Tango

filly
Dancingwithsierra
greeted the judge on debut
in the James & Son 2-Y-0 Pace
over 1609 metres.
Gary and Craig lost their
father and grandfather former trainer/driver Frank
Hoban aged 90 only a few
days earlier following a long
illness.
Easing away from the markers on straightening, Dancingwithsierra finished determinedly to gain the day
from Sahara Sunrise (one/
one three wide home turn)
also on debut, with Miss McBurn a tough third.
Andy and Kate Gath landed
the Angove family Winemakers Pace for C2 class
over 2100 metres with former Kiwi Mister Mundaka, a
5-Y-0 Bettors Delight/Regret
gelding.
Leaving his rivals standing
on the final bend, Mister
Mundaka had 13.3 metres to
spare at the finish in a rate
of 1-59 over Clark Griswold
with Bettor Than Best third.
Andy and Kate Gath were
again winners at Wednesdays Shepparton fixture,
producing another former
Kiwi by the name of Our
Danger Mouse to take the
Neatline Homes 3-Y-0 Pace
over Michael Vincent from
near last and Big Shot Bob in
a blanket finish.
There was a host of area

winners at Kilmore on
Thursday - quality filly Viva
Safari for Michael Azzopardi and reinsman Nathan
Jack, Ropeburn for Ross
and Kylie Sugars, Westwind
Gamble (Rod Petroff and
Casandra Troon) and Admiral Joy for Meltons Sue
Hunter and Greg Sugars.
At the Wedderburn fixture
held at Maryborough during
the afternoon, Parwan duo
Craig Demmler and Jodi
Quinlan snared the Wedderburn Fish & Chips Pace
for C0 class over 1690 metres
with Glenferrie Arch.
Friday nights Ouyen HRC
meeting held at Tabcorp Park
Melton saw more area winners salute, the most popular
being Craig Demmler and
Charlie Machsheen in the
Goodform 2.0 Pace for C7 or
better class over 1720 metres.
Others to salute on the night
were Outrageous El (Adam
Kelly and Gavin Lang) and
Exotic Native (Ian McMahon
& Chris Alford).
Meetings for the week:
Wednesday Yarra Valley/Mildura, Thursday
Charlton/Kilmore, Friday
Terang @ Melton, Saturday
Shepparton (Gold Cup
meeting), Sunday Geelong,
Monday Stawell, Tuesday
Cranbourne.
Horses to follow: Mister
Independent, Jaccka Wilco,
Sundons Comet, Dentona,
Clark Griswold, Clancys
Fobwatch, Vinny Chase.

Division 5 travelled to Central Wendouree with Avenue

having the difficulty on their
non-preferred grass surface.

The opposition started well

in three of the four rinks,
with only Bob Delaneys
rink showing any form in
the first few ends.

The loss makes the sides

position in the four very
shaky with the next round
against the top side.
Final score - Avenue 88 lt

The club returned to competition last Saturday, after
the Christmas break, and although numbers were a little
down due to school holidays,
those in attendance enjoyed
being back on the track and
catching up with many of
their friends again.

Thompson set the first record for 2015, increasing his
