Global Warming

The evolution

What is global warming?

Global warming is a significant

increase in the Earth's climatic
temperature over a relatively short
period of time.
There is a scientific consensus
that this rapid climate change is
mainly due to human activities.

How is global warming caused?

Global warming is
caused by the emission
of carbon dioxide (from
automobiles) and other
polluting gases such as
methane by a
phenomenon called
greenhouse effect.

How is global warming caused?

Green House Effect
Consider a
greenhouse made of
glass.

How is global warming caused?

Green House Effect

Sun

Sunrays comprising of
infra-red radiations of
short wavelength enter
it. Infra-red radiation is
responsible for the
heat of sunlight.

Green House Effect

Sun

Glass allows this infrared to enter and heats

up the surroundings.
The plants then begin
to radiate infra-red
radiation of longer
wavelength.

Sun

Glass does not allow

this radiation to
escape and makes the
greenhouse hotter.

and other heavy gases
such as methane form a
glass like layer around the
Earths atmosphere and
trap heat.

Effects
Rising sea levels

The rising temperatures

melt the polar ice-caps
and glaciers. This
increases the sea levels
worldwide.

Effects
Heat wave

Frequency of heat waves

has increased in the last
decade.

Effects
Storms and floods

The increased evaporation

has led to stronger storms
and floods, depleting
freshwater resources and
causing devastation.

Effects
Drought

On the other hand, some

parts of the Earth are
parched due to this
excessive heating.

Effects
Loss of biodiversity

The extinction of marine

life and mammals in the
Arctic ocean and is round
as their habitats are
steadily being destroyed.

What can I do about global warming?

Reduce, reuse and recycle

By recycling half of your

household waste, you can
save 2,400 pounds of
carbon dioxide annually.

What can I do about global warming?

Use less air-conditioning

Using less air-conditioning

will drastically cut down on
power consumption.

What can I do about global warming?

Use Compact Fluorescent Lights

CFLs last 10 times longer

than incandescent bulbs,
use two-thirds less energy,
and give off 70 percent
less heat. .

What can I do about global warming?

Drive less, drive smart

Less driving means fewer

emissions. Besides saving
petrol, walking and biking
are great forms of
exercise. Explore your
communitys mass transit
system, and check out
options for carpooling to
work or school.

What can I do about global warming?

Plant a tree

A single tree will absorb

approximately one ton
of carbon dioxide
during its lifetime.

Kyoto protocol
The Kyoto Protocol is an international environmental treaty
produced at the United Nations Conference on Environment and
Development (UNCED), informally known as the Earth Summit,
held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 314 June 1992 and adopted
at Kyoto, Japan in 1997.
The Kyoto Protocol establishes legally binding commitments for
the reduction of six greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane,
nitrous oxide, sulfur hexafluoride, hydrofluorocarbons, ) produced
by industrialized nations, as well as general commitments for all
member countries.
