Year One

January 2015
Dear Parents/Carers,
The year 1 team thought you may find it helpful to know about what we are planning to
teach this half term and some of our learning objectives with ideas of how you can help
your child at home.

Numeracy

Literacy

In numeracy we will be focussing on a

range of mathematical skills including
finding more/less than a number, pairs to
5,6,7 and 10, doubling numbers, 3D
shapes and their properties, counting in
2s, 5s, 10s and addition and subtraction
strategies. Please continue to encourage
your child to use their
mathematical knowledge
to
solve problems, for
example at dinner time
We have 6 people for dinner how many knives and forks do we
need?

In literacy the children will be writing non

fiction facts about Chinese New Year and
recounting their visit to the church as well
as retelling traditional stories such as the
Gingerbread Man. They will ensure their
stories have a clear beginning, middle and
end. We will be encouraging the children
to say out loud their sentences before
writing them down and
also, to re-read their
work to check they have
included: capital letters,
full stops and interesting
words.

Science
We will be learning about Materials and
how to sort them according to their
different properties. It would be helpful if
you could talk about what different things
are made from in your home and
encourage your child
to describe the texture
(how they feel.)

History
We will be investigating homes from the
past and comparing them to homes today.
We will also be looking at homes around
the world.
It would be lovely if you shared your
experiences of homes
in different countries.

ART

P.E.

The children will be learning about natural

and man-made patterns in the
environment. They will be designing and
printing their own patterns, such as
paisley.

Remember your child is taught PE every

week and need to wear their PE kit for
each lesson. Please ensure that their
names are written on their kit/bag.

Linking to the topic of homes

we will be creating our own
South African Ndebele houses.

Dolphins- Monday
Sharks - Tuesday

PE days are:

Turtles -Tuesday
Seahorses- Thursday

Cooking
Your child will be cooking throughout the
year in various curriculum areas. If you
have not already done so, we would like to
ask you to make a voluntary
contribution of 1 towards the cost of
purchasing resources. Please
give the donation to your
childs class teacher.

It would also be helpful if you:

Make time to share a book with your

child every day.

Help your child to learn her/his key

words by playing games such as,
pairs, snap, looking for the words in
books, displaying them around your
home etc.

We will also be teaching aspects of Computing, Music, RE and PSHE as the term
progresses. Our planning is linked across the curriculum and most subjects will be taught
alongside each other.
Watch out for fundraising events later this term. These will be held in order to
raise money for trips this year.

We hope some of these ideas will be helpful to you. If you have any questions, queries or
concerns we are always willing to talk them through with you. If we are unable to answer
your question immediately, we are always willing to make an appointment for a more
suitable time.
On behalf of the Year 1 team, thank you for your support
Ms Murphy (Year Group Leader)
