Linear motors
Direct drives for linear axes
Overview
Linear motors are highly dynamic, high-precision motors for
linear traversing motions. Accordingly, linear motors are the
preferred motor type for use in applications with stringent
requirements in terms of productivity and accuracy. By virtue
of their design, however, linear motors are also extremely
robust, wear-resistant motors which are easy to maintain.
Siemens offers two different linear motor designs for different
application classes.

Fully assembled linear axis (type LTS) supplied by SKF, with built-in
naturally cooled 1FN3 motor helps machine builders get started in the
field of highly dynamic, highly precise linear technology.
Applications
1FN3 and 1FN6 linear motors are therefore ideally suited to all
applications that require high acceleration rates and velocities
for highly productive handling or machining of parts.

System integration
Linear motors of the 1FN3 and 1FN6 series merge perfectly
into the system landscape of the SINAMICS S120 drive system.
Thanks to the plug connector mounted on the front, the preassembled power and signal cables mean that the drive is
ready to use in the shortest time possible.

Torque motors
Direct drives for rotary axes
Overview
Torque motors are direct drives for rotary axes with which precision and force are required at relatively low speeds. Because
their maintenance and space requirements are minimal, they
are often used as an alternative to geared motors.
Siemens offers two different motor types for these types of
application. The 1FW3 torque motor is a complete torque
motor which, mechanically speaking, needs only to be flangemounted to the machine and the rotor connected to the
machine shaft.
1FW6 torque motors are built-in motors. The stator and rotor
can be supplied as individual components and integrated
directly in the machine. They are available with jacket cooling
or an integrated cooling system.
Built-in torque motors must be precisely integrated into the
machine. Our mechatronics experts will be happy to advise
and support you in finding the right arrangement for your
application and with integration in the machine.
Both motor types feature a large hollow bore. The motor can
therefore be pushed onto the machine shaft. Alternatively,
media or mechanical components can be guided through the
cavity in the rotor.
Operating principle
The 1FW3 and 1FW6 torque motors are synchronous motors,
which basically operate in a comparable manner to rotary synchronous servo motors. Consequently, the rotor is equipped
with permanent magnets, and the stator contains the motor
windings. The multi-pole design of the windings endows the
motor with maximum torques at low speeds. For speed and
position control, the 1FW3 motor has a built-in shaft encoder;
this must be fitted to the machine for 1FW6 motors.
The torque motors are water-cooled as standard in order to
achieve a high power density. This cooling method also reduces the amount of heat transferred into the machine.
Applications
Torque motors are ideally suited to the precise operation of
rotary axes when high torques are required.
1FW6 built-in torque motors are used, for example, in machine
tools for
rotary tables
swivel axes
fork heads
rotary indexing tables
tool turrets
lathe spindles
1FW3 complete torque motors are used, for example, in production machines for
main drives for extruders
worms for injection molding machines
roller drives for paper machines
winders for packaging and paper machines
handling and assembly systems

Overview
Direct drives demand new solutions in the mechanical design
of motors and the selection of new system components.
Traditional complete motors have a clearly defined interface
to the machine. In contrast, direct drives in the form of builtin motors require the motor and encoder to be integrated
mechanically into the machine. Specially trained consultants
(mechatronic experts) are ready to provide you with the
support you need in designing a direct drive.
Our "Mechatronic Support" service offers an additional bonus.
Even while a machine is at the design stage, this service
models and optimizes all the mechanical, electronic and information technology systems included in the design for their
functionality within the overall drive before they are implemented for real. Mechatronic Support is thus the intelligent
alternative to "trial and error". Innovative machine concepts
are mutually compared, modified and optimized at the outset
a process which of course also takes account of your ideas
for new mechatronic components.
Scope of services
Support during machine development, from conception to
machine acceptance:
Comparison and analysis of machine concepts with
regard to static and dynamic precision, control loop
dynamics and rigidity
Mechatronic modeling and machine simulation
(Finite Element methods)
Computer-aided optimization of machine structures
Optimum dimensioning of all motor and control loop
components
Commissioning and control loop optimization
Analysis and optimization of existing tool and production machines on site
How you benefit from our Mechatronic Support:
Shorter development times quicker to market
Reliable achievement of development objectives
