Come On In!
Mark 1:14-20

Again this week I want to encourage you to participate in a small

group that will begin in February. The last details are being nailed
down now, the on-line sign-up will open January 25, the kick-off
dinner is Thursday, February 5, and the groups will begin meeting the
week after that.
Through our Vision 2020 small groups, many of you experienced the richness of
small groups, but for those that are not familiar let me summarize what was shared
in Sundays sermon. Much of the following comes from Richard C. Meyers book,
One Anothering.
1. Small groups are biblical. One of Jesus first acts when he began his public ministry was to form a small group, the twelve disciples.
2. A small group allows us to learn from one another. We learn from the experiences and insights of others.
3. A small group gives me a place to talk about spiritual things. Life is too short to
not think and talk about ultimate questions. Small groups are a safe place.
4. A small group helps me to experience the power of prayer. How rich it is to
give and receive the gift of praying for one another asking, How can I be with
you in prayer this coming week?
5. A small group provides me with much-needed support and encouragement.
God has created us (humanity) in community, and small groups can provide
authentic community.
6. A small group keeps me accountable. Simply sharing our hopes, burdens, and
goals with others makes us more likely to act on them.
In short, small groups give us the opportunity to experience and practice Gods
presence, while also growing in authentic relationship with one another.
To learn more, visit eastminsterpres.org and click on Small Groups at EPC in
the lower right corner. For questions, contact Caroline Bennett, Small Group Director, at cbennett@eastminsterpres.org or 256-1654.
In joy,

Brad

20 new Small Groups that will launch in unison with a six-week Lenten
study. If you are interested in either facilitating or joining a new Small Group, contact Caroline Bennett at cbennett@eastminsterpres.org. On-line group sign-ups begin January 25.

Family Promise at Eastminster

Family Promise, an exciting new ministry that serves homeless families, began hosting
families in the Columbia area in December. Eastminster has joined 15 area churches to host
these families two or three times a year, one week at a time. Our first hosting week is February 15-22, 2015. There are many volunteer opportunities, but there is a specific need for
overnight and weekend volunteers and drivers. If these are of interest to you, please contact
Elizabeth Barber (ebarber77@gmail.com) or Lucy Corley (lcorley2@sc.rr.com)with questions,
or to volunteer to help with this ministry.

the program. Needed items: Sketch pads (any size), Colored
Pencils, Poster Boards (Assorted Colors, Black and White),

Celebration of Faith Coming to EPC

Please hold the dates of March 14 & 15 on your calendar for this years Celebration of Faith. The adult education speaker will be Rev. Dr. Richard Boyce,
Dean of Union Presbyterian Seminary at Charlotte, NC. Faith formation for
youth and children and a creative arts component will be offered, as well.

Souper Bowl Parent/Youth Football Game

Calling all youth and parents of youth for a free church-wide fellowship
event the annual Parent/Youth football game at AC Flora on Sunday, February 1, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. It is time for the parents to reclaim their title! For
the first time in our history, the youth won the game last year! Remember - if it
rains, the game is cancelled!

Souper Bowl of Caring - February 1

A simple prayer: Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us
be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat is inspiring a youth-led
movement to help hungry and hurting people around the world.
This prayer, delivered by Brad Smith, then a seminary intern, gave birth to
an idea. On Sunday, February 1, Eastminster will have youth at the doors of the
church following worship with soup pots to collect donations to be given to a
local charity of their choice.
