1. Read through the Activity Listing.
2. Discuss with your child his/her first two choices.
3. Complete the tear-off form below.
What if there are too many students signed up for the spots?
1. Students have two choices in order to increase their chance of getting an activity they would like.
2. If you want student in both activities please state both; if you want student in one activity please
state only one.
3. Parents please keep copy of activities. Please have student return bottom half of this page only.

SAT Math Prep: prep for juniors and seniors who are intending to take the SAT this year. This Activity can raise your math
score.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)


FBLA membership prepares students for real-world professional experiences. Students will develop leadership, confidence
and character as they establish occupational goals and create an
interest and understanding of business enterprise. Students will
have the opportunity to participate in state competitions.

MS Math Enrichment: This program will support classroom


instruction as well as prepare students for CMT. The class will
afford the students one on one and small group tutoring for students participating. This activity will be voluntary and as well as
by invitation.

Competitive Slam Poetry: Poets will be expected to write,


share, perform and submit original work for publication Poets
interested will try out for the official CT Slam Team in hopes of
competing in Brave New Voices, an international poetry competition.

Student Abolitionist Stopping Slavery: This group learns


about issues relating to modern day slavery and advocates for an
end to this type of oppression. Students will also run the Abolitionist Fair and have fundraisers for the Free the Slaves organization.

to the wall. The mural design will be approved by the administrators before we begin painting. We will work on the design

Hartford Middle School Debate League: Get heard. Get


skills. Get rid of those public speaking jitters and join the inaugural Dragon Debaters debate team. Students should have good
critical thinking skills and enjoy arguments. One debate each
month will be held on Saturdays in February, March, and April

Chinese Culture & traditional board game: : Classic Chinese games are a very important part of Chinese culture.
When traveling in China, you stroll through the streets and
you'll see and hear people playing Chinese traditional games
for relaxation. A brief introduction will tell you in this afterschool activity what games Chinese play for relaxation and
mental stimulation.

SAGE (Sexuality and Gender Empowerment) :


previously known as GSA, will focus on creating a safer
school environment for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered
and questioning youth. We will work on several events including Day of Silence and activities which promote respect
for the LGBT community.

Young Women Leadership Corps (YWLC): is a practical,


life-based youth development program for teenage girls. It
includes a series of fun afterschool workshops which empowers young women to acquire skills in personal growth, financial literacy and career and college readiness. You will gain
confidence and knowledge needed to be successful now and
throughout your future.

to supplement their math class and help on their homework.

Jazz Band & Drumline: The ensemble is designed to introduce students to improvisational music. The focus will be on
swing, bebop, and rock/funk styles.
We will be learning percussion technique and playing marching percussion with the plan to perform at school based functions. Students with an interest in learning both Mallet and
Snare drum are encouraged to sign up.

CMT Reading Excel: This activity will offer students the


support they need to improve their reading skills. Students
will learn and practice reading strategies which focus on the
skills necessary for reading comprehension, DRP, and Edit
and Revise. Students will also work on the READ NATURALLY computer program which will help improve their
reading fluency.

game you want to bring!

Great Explorations program: Introduction/Overview: The


students will be introduced to what the program offers. They
will then trace the outline of a body on large paper and work
with us to fill in bones and organs while discussing body
systems.
