CourseDescription:
Thiscoursecriticallyexaminesselectedreformsfromtheperspectiveofoneormoreofthefoundationdisciplines.Theaimisto
developinthecareereducatorabroaderanddeeperunderstandingofthetensionbetweenideasandpracticeindynamic
socialenvironments.ThisgraduatecourseisrequiredforallnewEducationalStudiesstudents.
Educationalreformisthetermmostoftenusedinreferencetoattemptstoimprovethecurrentsystemofeducation.There
seemstobenoendtoattemptstochangewhatexistsintosomethingnewanddifferent.Thisprocesshasbeengoingonsince
thebeginningofformaleducationandwillnodoubtcontinue.
InthiscoursewewillreviewandevaluateeducationaldevelopmentprimarilyintheUnitedStatesandsomeoftheattemptsto
bringaboutchangesandimprovementsinthesystems.Wewillengageincriticalanalysisofsomeofthesereformsandtryto
determinewhysomeworkedandothersdidnot.Inadditionwewillalsopresentourownreformagenda.
WeeklyReadingsandPresentations:25%
Tworeadingswillbeassignedeachweekforthetotalclass.Inaddition,twostudentswillbeselectedtoreadanalyzeand
critiquethereadingsfortheweekandmakeapresentationtotheclass.Thepresentationshouldnottakemorethan15
minutescoveringkeypointsfromthereadingsandquestionstobeputforthfortotalclassdiscussion.Theinstructorwillserve
asfacilitatorforthediscussion.
CourseAssignments:
CRITICALREACTIONPAPERS(25%):Youwillwritethreeshortpapersonsomeaspectofeducationalreformfromthe
readingsandclassdiscussion.Thepapersshouldbeapproximately3pagesinlength(doublespaced).Thesepapersshould
focusonthereadingsandspecificallysomeaspectsthatyoueitheragreeordisagreewith.Thepaperswillmorefullydescribe
yourpositionsinreferencetothoseoftheauthors.

topicrelatedtoeducationreformandapprovedbytheinstructor.Thepapershouldbeaminimumof12pagesdoublespaced.
AonepageproposalforyourpaperisdueonTuesdayFebruary24th.
Classparticipationandattendance:Regularclassattendanceisexpected.Agreatdealofourlearningwilltakeplace
throughinteractioninclassbyengaginginclassdiscussion,whichwillcontributetoourownandeachothersunderstanding.
Thequalityoflearninginthisclassissomethingthatwewillallbeabletocontributetoasparticipants.
