TCO History
Ms. Betty U. Lus Story
Before any franchise dealers were established in Mindanao,
Toyotas Vehicle sales were directly handled either by Metro Manila
dealers or the one in Cebu. As the number of units naturally grew by the
years, the needs for servicing, parts replacement and even repeat-sales
were strongly felt.
It took various interested parties to apply for a Toyota dealership
just to fill the wide-ranging needs of the customers. The problem was quite
a big concern that had left much to be desired even with the presence of
Toyota Davao. In other words, customers from Mindanaos northern and
western parts had to continue clamouring for more accessible centers.
Driven by her intention of making a contribution to bridge the gap
between Toyota and customers, Ms. Betty U. Lu came into the picture.
Likewise she has observed that all the car manufacturing companies have
arrived in Cagayan de Oro City, Except Toyota
For a gifted businesswoman that has led her marketing group to the
pole position of selling Goodyear tires, Ramcar batteries and other
accessories, the next target is heading a car dealership business. Setting

for no less than the best n her business she would go for her next project
provided it must be Toyota and nothing else.
Hence as early as 1992, Ms. Lu embarked on her Toyota
dealership quest that was marred by several challenging circumstances,
ironies and even near misses. She recalled having to walk alone, with her
high heeled shoes and under the big hot sun, as her borrowed car broke
down almost close to an important TMPC appointment.
During her earlier visits she would also be mistaken either as the
husbands advance party or his representative that left her wondering if it
was among TMPCs dealership requirements to have a husband.
At times she had to sleep at three or four in the morning just to
complete some needed requirements and chase planes just to reach
Manila for some important meetings. However, according to TCOs EVP
and General Manager Peter Lim Lo Suy, If something is intended for
someone, then no matter what he or she will really have it in the end.
True, for their group eventually received the awards of dealership
from a rich field of at least fifteen other eager groups of aspirants. Again
true, for originally and at several times frowned at becoming the General
Manager, but had to agree finally in the spirits of serving the best interest
on the company and the customers.
Ms. Betty Lu and the rest of TCOs Board members have
consistently been united even as they had to undergo a series of credit
checking and double-checking, character and background investigations,
site visitations and inspections and the like.
So through was TMPCs research work that even Ms. Lus sleeping
and waking hours are no longer a secret to them. In between those
10

procedures and formalities there were some intriguing lulls and patient
waiting. Nevertheless, all those hardships and excitements ended with a
final interview sometime in AUGUST 1995 and on March20, 1996 the
provisional agreement was signed between TMPC and TCO.
Soon after the building contracts were inked, the site construction
works were set to a full blast. With Ms. Lu at the helm of Toyotas
thirteenth dealership, TCO has therefore scored a milestone in Toyotas
history in the Philippines. The Lady President holds the reputation as the
first and only woman dealership president to date. Which bodes so well for
the entire business picture as many believe that a woman heading any
trade in 1997 will surely succeed.
At Toyotas showroom and service center the TCO management
and workforce offer all customers and clients the best of vehicle sales,
parts and accessories sales and complete servicing jobs. With this
assurance comes our personalized after-sales service.
This is Toyotas dedication to Number 1 Quality and Number 1
Customer satisfaction which goes beyond the service and working lanes.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Toyota Cagayan de Oro crafted various programs and activities as
part of our Social Responsibility. These are activities to uplift the spirits of
our needy brothers and sisters in the community, promote education,
voluntary blood donation, enhance environmental preservation and many
more.

11

This is TCO's quest for CS excellence, and so every TCO team

member is tasked to memorize the CS...

Oath of Customer Satisfaction!

We pledge to treat all of our customers with respect
We Will honor all commitments made
We will provide each customer with the Toyota quality experience
We will see to it that their experience exceeds their expectations
We will always keep in mind and in heart
Toyota's corporate philosophy of number one customer satisfaction
WE WILL DO THE EXTRA MILE, TO EARN THE CUSTOMER'S SMILE!

12

CHAPTER 3

Narrative Experience
A professional is a product of training. A competitive professional is
a product of a good training, together with values and experiences. I have
a lot of memories when having my training at Toyota Cagayan De Oro Inc.
First, I thought that the people working in this place were strict and
serious especially the technicians in the service department but when I
knew them, they are so fun to be with. The other trainees from different
schools also made my days so memorable. That is the reason why even a
single absent I have never done because I dont want to miss a single
moment with them. When it comes to work, I am very active on it because
I dont want to waste my time and I want to learn. I will make sure that the
learnings Ive gained in this establishment will never be wasted because
this is really related to my course.

13

Inspect engine oil, replace engine oil, replace engine oil filter,
inspect engine coolant, inspect exhaust pipes and mountings, replace
spark plugs, inspect battery, inspect air filter, inspect brake pads and
dises, inspect brake line pipes and hoses, inspect power steering fluid,
inspect steering wheel and linkage, inspect transmission oil/fluid, cleaning
of oil tank, inspect brake and clutch fluid, inspect brake pads and dises,
inspect drive belts, drain fuel, replace full down steering relic and pinion
assembly, replace shack absorber, inspect drive belts, group study in the
training room, assign in a tool room, list the distributed and returned tools
by the technicians, monitor the tools and the savings of excess oils,
monitor the available stocks on hand to create a purchase request to
determine if the stocks are low, computing charge sales invoices and
creating transmittal for charge sales invoices that is computed were some
of works that I enjoyed most because it is so challenging and interesting. If
I will be given another chance to have my training I refer to work here
again because you can learn a lot of things in Toyota Cagayan De Oro Inc.
and the people here were fun and one of a kind.

Observation
In fact, my working area is a place where I can develop my self trust and confidence. An on the job training helps a trainee to become
independent. I have observed that the trainings done inside the car
industry creates a mutual goal for the future. It puts a student into
progress and gives knowledge where we can hardly get from other
experiences.

14

Participation
Since I am reassigned in a tool room, my participations were help
to monitor the tools and the savings of excess oils and then monitor the
available stocks on hand so that we could create a purchase request if the
quantity of the stocks are low.
Interaction
During the training at Toyota Cagayan De Oro Inc., I learned to
interact with other people. We know that people have different
characteristics and attitudes; however, making friends with the other
trainees and co-workers doesnt make difficult.
Even though I was only a trainee, they dont treat me like others.
And as a trainee, I dont feel uncomfortable as I worked with them. From
the interaction made with them, the later learned to work with patience.
Although thoroughly working on something was time consuming, the
quality of the output product is the most important. I also learned from coworkers experiences and mistakes then apply them whenever I needed it.
They also encouraged me to go on with his studies until he become a
professional.
Although I worked and interact with them for a short period of time,
I learned a lot to them; the skills and techniques that they shared with me
that cannot be find on the books.

Challenges
Challenge is test of one's abilities or resources in a demanding.
Challenges are always present and a part of a training to become more
active and ready whatever things that might happen. However, life doesnt

15

always cooperate. Stuff happens that causes to feel angry, afraid,

ashamed and discouraged but we dont have to resign because everything
is going to be alright if we have the courage to do what is appropriate
During the on-the-job training, I met some challenges that push to
work much better. First is when one of the co-workers challenged me to be
greedy in learning new things and skills. That is also the time when the
supervisor said that if the later want high grade, I must work like a real
employee. That was a big challenge for me. I was only a trainee, so the
supervisor must supervise and not to let him handle a situation than I
didnt know. And because of that, I learned to put a dedication to my work.

Problems Met and Solutions Offered

The only problem I have during on the job training is lack of selfesteem. Trainees are being trained and not expected to know everything
in one day. Experience is gained through time. The longer we do
something the more we learn. The faster we gain knowledge & become a
productive employee.

16

CHAPTER 4

Accomplishment and Contribution

For a month of working in a car industry, I have accomplished many
things according to what I have to accomplish and what my supervisor
instructs me to do and I guarantee that I have made my accomplishments
properly.

Competencies Gained
The training inside the famous car industry is a learning experience
each day. The trainee learned to appreciate the lessons studied in school.
And also to understand that everything that was thought inside the school
can be a tool that can be used in future career.
As a trainee that was working at Toyota Cagayan De Oro Inc., I
learned to become a hard-working person. Time to complete the output
product is not important, but the quality. I also learned to follow the
instructions as what the superiors said and to accept opinion that they
suggested.
At the school, being late is better than absent. But as what the
trainee learned at Toyota, being absent is better than being late. Being
17

absent can be a cause of emergency situations like sickness, unpredicted

travels and phenomena, while, being late is a cause of misbehaviour and
unable to manage the time.
Lastly, the trainee learned that on-the-job training is not just only a
subject to be passed or a requirement to be completed but on-the-job
training is an opportunity to show what skills, talents and techniques that
the student learned from the school and also an opportunity to experience
the life outside the campus; serving companies like a professional on the
field of the students specialization.

Projects/Output
At the end of the training, I was able to repair different types of
engine and able to help in solving different kinds of engine troubles. I was
also able to handle assembling. For me, all the equipment that were used
inside the company were output project.

Impact to Field of Specialization

The training served as the stepping stone of the trainees to the real
life of a professional auto mechanical technician. It served as the
beginning the real life of being an employee. The trainees have realized
that learning is a lifetime commitment that is continues even you already
have a job. The training gave the students more initiative to their chosen
career. The students were more encouraged to pursue the Automotive
Mechanical Technology course. The training inspired the trainees to
enhance their skills and knowledge in the field of mechanical technology.
The trainees were given some ideas what could be the feeling or situation
being an employee. The training enriched their individuality as a beginner
18

and created the foundation of being a good worker. The best thing that the
trainees have gained inside the company was the good orientation of the
person having the higher positions.

Conclusion
I conclude that on the job training is one of the most important
subject to pursue by the students in order to prepare themselves for the
future. Its sometimes hard but it is much harder for the less - trained
students to adopt the real environment in the future.
As a result of my training, I also found out that there are no hard
things to do if we know it and we are interested to learn about it. Training
like what I have experienced helps us to become courageous and a better
student, apparently.
Recommendation
The company created a good service to their clients and gave the
best training for the students. The students must have a good company
that would give them a good training ground and would enhance their
knowledge and capabilities. The school must have the good coordination
for some companies that offer an annual On the Job Training inside their
company.
The school should provide more budgets given to the OJT
coordinators to have the best monitoring of the training the students are
taking. One of the best ways of training is the provincial trainings that

19

would give different experiences to the trainees. An out of town training

would give more self-esteem to the students.
The students taking up the course BSAMT should be interested in
what they are doing. They should take the OJT as part of their growth not
just as a requirement in school. They should face the trials but should not
forget all these things are neither boring nor waste of time. They should be
interested: thats the coolest way to grow in their field.
