Caribbean Football
Union title when they
defeated Haiti 3:0 in
the 2001 Copa Caribe
final on 25 May at the
Hasely Crawford National Stadium in
Port-of-Spain.
Dale Saunders sent the 8,000 fans
cheering the host nation with a 28thminute goal, before Brent Rahim and
Arnold Dwarika struck in the second half
to secure a remarkable sixth title in the
last seven Caribbean championships for
Trinidad & Tobago.
T&T were hardly threatened by the
Haitians, who failed to reproduce the
dazzling form which saw them whip
Martinique 5-0 in the semifinals.
Trinidad & Tobago had advanced after a
2:0 victory against Cuba.
The semifinal victories gave both
countries automatic berths in the 2002

Guatemala finally
captured the country's
first-ever Central
American championship 3 June, defeating Panama 3:1 in the
final match of the final
round of the 2001 UNCAF Copa de
Naciones in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
At times playing with more heart than
technical skill, Guatemala used first-half
goals from Dwight Pezzarossi and Mario
Acevedo to forge a lead, then after Jorge
Dely Valdes caused a tense final period for
the Guatemalans, Fredy Garcia sealed their
title with the third just before full time.
With the victory, Guatemala finished
off the final round in unbeaten fashion,
opening with a scoreless draw against El
Salvador before defeating Costa Rica and
Panama to end with seven points.
Guatemala had finished as runner-up in
the last three editions of the Central
American championship.

FC REFEREES IN CONMEBOL
WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS
As part of the referee
exchange program with
other confederations, FC referees recently had the experience of officiating matches in
South American qualifying.
For the Paraguay-Chile match on 2
June in Asuncion, Rodrigo Badilla led a
Costa Rican team, with Jose Barrantes and
Erick Mora assisting, Olger Mejias serving
as the fourth official. Antonio Marrufo of
Mexico ran the center for the Peru-Ecuador
match in Lima the same day, with Hector
Delgadillo and Victor Osorio assisting and
Gilberto Alcala as the fourth.
In later months, more FC referees will
preside over World Cup qualifying matches

FC Gold Cup, the championship of the

Football Confederation. In the third-place
match, Martinique stunned Cuba thanks to
a controversial penalty in the 74th minute
converted by Marcel Gibon.
In the final, Nottingham Forest FCbased striker Stern John made the first goal
for the Soca Warriors. He took on the
Haitian defense with an enterprising dribble and fired a shot which goalkeeper
Gteau Ferdinand deflected, only for
Saunders to tap in from close range.
Rahim deflated Haiti in the 68th minute
when he knocked in a long cross from
Mickey Trotman on the right to make it 2:0,
six minutes later, Saunders found Dwarika
unmarked in the six-yard box and he slid
the ball past Ferdinand to complete the win.
Trinidad & Tobago also claimed two
individual awards, as lanky defender
Dennis Lawrence was named Most Valuable
Player of the tournament, and Clayton Ince
grabbed the Best Goalkeeper award.
Cuba took the Fair Play Trophy, and
Haiti's Golman Pierre got the Golden Boot
Award as the top scorer with five goals,
thanks mainly to a four-goal beaver trick
against St. Kitts & Nevis in group play.
In group play, Martinique stunned
Trinidad & Tobago with a 2:1 victory - that
left fellow World Cup final round participant Jamaica out of the hunt.
The surprising victory from the French
dependency, on the final day of play in
Group A, left all three countries deadlocked
atop the group with six points each. But
earlier that same day, when Jamaica was
able to manage just a 2:1 victory against
Barbados, the Reggae Boyz were left with a
poorer goal differential and out of the
semifinal places.

Martinique is no stranger to Copa Caribe

win the 1993 competition in Kingston on
penalty kicks after a scoreless draw, then
finished runner-up to Trinidad & Tobago
the following year. Their most recent success was a third-place finish in 1996.
In Group B, Haiti and Cuba played to a
scoreless draw on the final day of group
play as both advanced to the semifinals as
well. Both countries were held to surprising
draws in their second matches, Haiti by
Suriname and Cuba by St Kitts & Nevis, but
the draw on the final day left both with five
points in the group, one point clear of St.
Kitts & Nevis.

QUARTERFINAL DATES SET FOR

INAUGURAL FC GIANTS CUP
The dates for the two remaining quarterfinal series still to be
played in the inaugural FC Giants Cup, along with the kickoff times
for the semifinals and finals, have been set.
The first leg of Quarterfinal Series 2, matching CD Guadalajara
of Mexico and CSD Comunicaciones of Guatemala, will be played
Wednesday 25 July in Guatemala at the Estadio Mateo Flores
beginning at 8 p.m. local time. The return leg will be played
Wednesday 1 August, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, with
kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. local time.
Quarterfinal Series 3, matching CF America of Mexico and CSD
Municipal of Guatemala, will have its first leg played on Sunday 8
July in Guatemala, also at the Estadio Mateo Flores, with the
match beginning at 11 a.m. local time. The second leg will be played
Tuesday 31 July, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. local time.
The semifinals are set for Friday 3 August, also at the Los

along with Guatemala sealed automatic
berths in the 2002 FC Gold Cup, to be
played early next year. Panama, which finished fourth, faces a playoff for the final
Gold Cup spot.
"We had so much fight, so much inspiration to win the match. We had more
will, more heart, and that was the important thing," Garcia said. "Guatemala
demonstrated that it could do what was
needed and thanks to God, we have the
tournament in our hands."
Pezzarossi said the victory "has left us
happy for all Guatemalans." But the Chilebased striker also pointed the contribution
of captain Erick Miranda and midfielders
Cesar Trujillo and Claudio Rojas, dismissed
from the team after leaving the team hotel
prior to the final round.
"I dedicate (the victory) to God and our
companions who could not finish with us,
but are fundamental part of this, the championship." Pezzarossi said.
In group play, Guatemala suffered a
shock in a 3:3 draw with Belize, needing an
85th-minute penalty from Garcia to snatch
their share of the spoils. But with Costa
Rica's earlier 4:0 win against Belize, that left
Guatemala needing only to avoid losing by
four goals, a feat they managed despite playing a man down for the final 10 minutes.
On the final day of play in Group A, a
stunning stoppage-time equalizer from substitute Deris Umanzor gave El Salvador a
1:1 draw with Honduras and eliminated the
host country from the Copa de Naciones.

and 9 p.m. local time. D.C. United of the USA will meet the winner
of the Guadalajara-Comunicaciones quarterfinal in one match,
while CD Saprissa of Costa Rica will face the winner of the
America-Municipal series in the other match. The exact order of
the semifinals will be announced at a later date.
The semifinal winners will meet at 3 p.m. local time on Sunday
5 August in Los Angeles for the first Giants Cup title, preceded by
the match for third place. But the finalists will have already booked
places for the first FC Clubs' Cup, set for early 2003, a qualification
tournament for the next FIFA Club World Championship.

sealed the guanacos' berth, to join Panama
in the final round.
For the first time since the tournament
began in 1991, Honduras - twice champion
and twice runner-up of the UNCAF Copa de
Naciones - will not participate in the FC
Gold Cup, set for 19 January - 3 February
2002 in the USA. The top three teams in
the UNCAF Copa de Naciones earn automatic places, with the fourth-place team
playing a Caribbean side in a playoff.
El Salvador opened the tournament
with a victory against Nicaragua, then posted their first surprise of the competition
with a 2:1 victory against Panama. Also on
the first day, Panama put the first crack in
the armor of the host nation with a 2:1 victory, in the end forcing the final day drama.

WARNER TO HEAD CFU FOR ANOTHER FOUR YEARS

The two FC representatives

ended a dismal FIFA
Confederations Cup run with
defeats to conclude their participation at the group stage. On
June 3, France qualified for the
semifinals in style, the world
champions securing their spot by
easily beating defending champion Mexico 4:0 in their last group
match up in Ulsan, Korea.
Mexico, winners at home in 1999,
ended in last place in Group A
with three losses, one goal for and
Mexico fell to host Korea 2:1 in the eight against.
2001 FIFA Confederations Cup
Then June 4 in Niigata, Japan,
Cameroon rebounded from two defeats to knock off Canada 2:0.
Though Canada failed to score a goal, they had a point from the
three matches after the scoreless draw with Brazil.
Mexico's campaign to repeat as champions got a wakeup call in
the first match, falling to Australia 2:0, then they fell to a late goal
from host Korea in a 2:1 defeat.
Japan struggled to break down the resolute Canadian defense
before winning 3:0 to open the tournament, but Brazil couldn't
manage the same feat, and the defending Gold Cup champions
snatched a 0:0 draw in the high point of the tournament for the
Confederation's sides.

Jack Warner, who holds the offices of President of the Football

Confederation and FIFA Vice President, was re-elected President
of the Caribbean Football Union for another four-year term at the
CFU's XXIV Ordinary Congress held 14 May, just prior to the start
of Copa Caribe.
Warner, who has headed the CFU since 1982, was elected

Burrell was elected First Vice President, while Guyana Football
Federation President Colin Klass was elected Second Vice
President, both also running unopposed.
Elected to the four positions on the CFU Executive Committee
were Osiris Guzman (Dominican Republic), Yves-Jean Bart (Haiti),
Chet Greene (Antigua & Barbuda) and Lionel Haven (Bahamas).

HUMBERTO TORRES ELECTED NEW PRESIDENT OF UNCAF

Humberto Torres of El Salvador was named the new president
of the Union Centroamericana de Ftbol (UNCAF) at the organization's congress 2 June in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
Torres, 63, in September was elected as president of the
Normalizing Commission for the El Salvador Football Federation.
Julio Rocha, President of the Nicaraguan Football Federation, also
ran for the position.
Alfredo Hawit, General Secretary of the Honduras Autonomous
Football Federation (FENAFUTH), was elected as UNCAF
President in 1999. However, he was forced to vacate the position
when named a member of the Executive Committee of the Football
Confederation last November, under UNCAF statutes.
