1000 Crore Raymond Ltd acquired 74%stake in Chennai based ColorPLus Fashion
Pvt Ltd. To strengthen its position in the premium branded apparel market.

The textile major Raymonds branded apparel is pegged at around Rs. 180 core
By the end of the financial year 2008-09, ColorPlus is aiming at a turnover of Rs.
192crore.

Things you didnt know about ColorPlus:-

The name ColorPlus is a happy accident. It was coined after the production of a batch
of over-dyed shirts, early in the life of the brand.

The ColorPlus logo is actually a stylised rendition of the Greek letter Phi. It was
designed on a cocktail napkin by Rajan Mudaliar, one of the founders of the company,
during a flight across the pacific.

QUALITY STANDERD

With a mix of high quality cotton and a riot of colours and styles, ColorPlus became one of
the fastest growing brands in the market. In fiscal 2002, ColorPlus posted a profit before tax
of Rs 6.5 crore on a turnover of Rs 50 crore. On the domestic front, ColorPlus has around 125
retail outlets. There are plans to add 15 to 20 franchisee outlets a year. We expect substantial
synergies between the existing marketing and distribution network of Raymonds and the
product portfolio of ColorPlus.
The acquisition of ColorPlus has pushed up Raymonds ranking in the mens wear business.
According to a survey by retail consultancy firm KSA Technopak, the total branded
readymade mens wear market is upwards of Rs 5,000 crore. The largest segment is shirts,
which accounts for 35 per cent of the market followed by trousers at around 15 per cent.In
branded apparel, Madura Garments leads with a share of 10 per cent followed by Raymonds
at 4 per cent. The latter has a 60 per cent market share in the Rs 1,400 crore worsted suiting
category. Says an analyst: Raymonds has survived on the equity of its brand. Whether it can
sustain it is debatable.
Interestingly, all the majors in the Rs 6,400-crore ready-to-wear industry will tell you that
many brands -- of course, barring theirs -- are up for sale and they are bidding their time to
lap up those brands that sync with their existing product portfolio.
Be that as it may, Colorplus Fashions, true to its fashion of being first in the country in
several categories, is all set to launch garments made out of Supima cotton, a special cotton
variety grown only in some parts of USA. It may be mentioned that the company is credited
with many firsts -- introduction of pre-wash, wrinkle-free, golf-ball-wash, stain- and wrinklefree, stretchable and Celanese acetate fibre garments.Further, in line with the competitors
moves, Colorplus Fashions is entering the ladies garment segment. "We will be mainly in
western wear category," says Mr Bhatia.
However, unlike some of its competitors, Colorplus Fashions will launch its ladies wear
under the existing Colorplus brand. "First we will exhaust the market opportunities for our
brand and before we think about launching a new brand. Our various products are welldifferentiated 80 per cent of the women's western wear is accounted for by tops.
Interestingly companies like Indus League, launched its ladies wear under the Scullers tag,
while Pantaloon Retail (India) Ltd, created two exclusive ladies wear brands viz, Annabelle
(western office / casual wear), Srishti (salwar kameez, readymade blouse)Last, the
management has not forgotten the need for expanding its reach.
Strengthening the existing brand and introduction of newer ones aside, the company is now
concentrating on expanding its reach throughout the country. Presently Colorplus brand is
available in 90 outlets of which 5 are company-owned and 11 are franchisee-owned outlets.

PRODUCT PROMOTION

ColorPlus stands by itself. The product does the talking. This attribute beats every other form
of promotion. ColorPlus has now moved into larger format stores to showcase its widening
range and vibrancy. Understanding the significance of the proliferation of shopping malls and
weekend shopping, ColorPlus is present across all major malls and shopping plazas in India
and abroad. Being a premium brand has given it a distinct advantage in positioning itself
favourably in areas of high fashion
