Influence of 19th century Philippine society and European enlightenment
During the 19th century, Spain invested seriously for the education and
infrastructure of the Philippines. They establish of a free public school system that used
their language for teaching, leading to increasing numbers of educated Filipinos. Also the
opening of Suez Canal gave a quick travel time to Spain, which was facilitated by some
Filipino illustrados that have been able to expand their educations in Spain and Europe.
The Philippine economy was living ahead to most of its Asian nationals and even
many European countries at that time because of several infrastructure projects during the
19th century. Manila was seen in the 19th century as a model of colonial governance that
effectively put the interests of the original inhabitants of the islands before those of the
colonial power. The Philippine revolution against the Spanish Era culminates the
establishment of the first Philippine republic. It was formed after the Philippine
declaration of independence and the events of the collapse if the Spanish rule over the
Philippines. The constitution was approved by delegates to the assembly of
representatives and sanctioned by Aguinaldo the next day. By the late 18th century,
political and economic changes in Europe were finally beginning to affect Spain and thus
Philippines. It mirrored the Filipinos desire for reforms, an intellectual movement in
Western Europe that emphasized reason and science in philosophy and in the study of
human culture and the natural world. During the Philippine Revolution in 1896, Rizal
was mistakenly associated in the outbreak of the revolution and executed for treason in
1896. Spanish friars revolts broke out in several provinces around manila.
Rizal as a religious man, did not believe in the catholic doctrine that salvation was
only for catholics and that outside Christianity; salvations was not possible even if
catholics composed only a small minority of the worlds religious groups. This shows that
he opposes the catholic teaching of money indulgence for the forgiveness of sins. Though
Rizal was born in a catholic way, he still fought for what is genuine.
We often like to think of heroes in how they changed a civilization or how they
dissented against the situations of their day. But, the significance of those events and
actions lies in how they reverberate with individuals. Someone like Rizal, with his works
and words inspires me as a young Filipino to lead a life committed to serving others or to
benefit my fellow man or even fight for joint ideas.
Jose Rizal, in my own thoughts, articulates me the value of certain things to be
successful in life. Rizal proved to us that pen is mightier than a sword, he fought a war
with a pen and paper and his brilliant mind. His capabilities in literatures enable him to
convince his whole fellowmen to attain justice instead of destroying an empire.
I learned that you must not fight fire with a fire because it will just make the fight
more immense. Rizal inspired me to study even better because of what he did in the past.
It is of great importance that students like us to understand the justification behind having
to take up a Rizal course in college. It is an issue today whether to teach Rizal course,
looking at the present times, many are now questioning the relevance of the subject. But
as for me, Rizal subject will always be important. It had been our mirror from the past
that had helped us know the identity that we are today. If we will learn eventually the life
of Rizal aside of he as the hero of our country, we would be motivated, inspired and
amazed on how he become one of the great leaders that we had in our nation. Learning
about the life of Rizal is like learning about the lives of our parents. We may not be
interested for the reason that it is an additional burden to our student life, but still as
someone who is born a Filipino it is a must to know about his life.
It is important to study how Rizal became a hero because this has a great impact
on our present. It explains why are we in certain situation and what events led to that
situation. Studying the origin of our heroes makes us true Filipinos.
Having said all this, I learned so many things about Jose Rizals life and his works
and just got inspired by everything that he said. I would start reading his novel so that I
turn to be like him, to inspire a lot of people and take the responsibility to spread the
word for the next generations.
