1 Introductory Remarks
Installation may only be carried out by a qualified installation contractor in compliance with current rules and
regulations and the instructions in this manual.
Do not install the heat pump in rooms that may be exposed to frost!
Ensure that the floor and substructure are capable of sustaining the weight of the unit! Remember that the
weight of the unit should include the water-filled water heater (see Technical Specifications).
The unit may only be installed on a firm and level foundation.
The outdoor unit must be positioned on, and secured to, a stable base.

Thermia Atria Installation instructions 9680-56538001 - Page

2 Positioning and removal of packaging

Make the necessary preparations in the room where the heat pump is to be installed.
Position the unit and level it with the help of the adjustable feet. Remove the front panel.
Decide on which side of the unit the chilled water lines should be connected.
Observe clearance requirements on p. 8.
Connect a condensate drain hose between the drain-pan pipe and the floor drain. The drain-pan pipe discharges
through an opening in the bottom plate of the unit. The hose diameter must be 14/10 mm.
Preparation of the installation area for the outdoor unit.
Determine the position of the outdoor unit. It does not have to be positioned in any specific direction.
Noise is produced from the outdoor unit when the fan is in operation, remember this when positioning to reduce
disturbance in your own home as well as to any neighbours.
When the outdoor unit is defrosting, water will drip straight down under the unit. The area around the outdoor unit
must therefore be properly drained in order to catch the water.
Remember that the outdoor unit must have a certain amount of room in order to function and for servicing (see page 11).
Complete water piping installation.
Fill the water heater. Then fill and bleed the radiator system.
Complete electrical installation.

2.1 Preparations before installing heat pump

If the coolant pipes are to be routed above ground, make holes in the walls for the
coolant pipes.
The coolant pipes must be insulated all the way along from the heat pump, through the
walls and on the exterior of the house up to the outdoor unit in order to prevent condensation and heat losses when hot brine circulates around the system when defrosting.
If coolant pipes are to be laid underground see the instructions below.
Open up holes in the wall for the conduits (1) for the chilled water lines. See Fig.
5 on page 12.

Separate holes should be drilled for the chilled water feed and return lines.
If there is a risk of groundwater infiltration, special insulated tubes should be
used.
Insert the conduits (1) through the wall openings from the inside making sure

they have a slight downwards slope of at least 1 cm per 30 cm.

To prevent rainwater from entering, cut off the conduits at an oblique
angle (see Fig. 1 1).
Ensure that there is sufficient distance between the conduits to allow
for further installation work.
Insert the chilled water lines (2) from the outside through the conduits.
Fill the gap between conduit and wall with mortar (3).

3
2
3

Check that the chilled water lines (2) are well centred inside the conduits (1), so
that the thermal insulation is evenly distributed on all sides.
Seal the conduits with a suitable sealing agent (foam plastic) (4).

2.5 Unpacking and installing the outdoor unit.

The outdoor unit is wrapped and delivered in a wooden crate.
Start by unpacking the unit from the wooden crate.
Check that the delivery is complete, it must contain the actual outdoor unit as
well as a pack containing the disassembled stand including necessary screws,
nuts and washers.
For the location of the outdoor unit note the following.
The outdoor unit does not have to be positioned in any specific direction.
Noise is produced from the outdoor unit when the fan is in operation, remember
this when positioning to reduce disturbance in your own home as well as to any
neighbours.
When the outdoor unit is defrosting, water will drip straight down under the unit.
The area around the outdoor unit must therefore be properly drained in order to
catch the water (approximately 2 litres per defrost).
Remember that the outdoor unit must have a certain amount of room in order to
function and for servicing, see page 11.

Thermia Atria Installation instructions 9680-56538001 - Page

2.6 Installing the stand on the outdoor unit.

Start by screwing the two horizontal plates (1) to the two legs (2).
The curved edge of the horizontal plates must be facing downwards. Screws and washers for installation are included in the
delivery.
Now remove both side panels from the outdoor unit, they can be
removed without tools as they are secured by snap fasteners at
each corner.
There are pre-drilled holes in the base plate where the stand is to
be secured (3).
Screw the stand into place on the outdoor unit using 2 screws
each side.
NOTE! Before the stand is secured to the outdoor unit, ensure that
the upper horizontal strut is facing forwards (4) and that the lower
strut (5) is facing backwards.
The outdoor unit and its stand must be positioned on a secure base
such as wooden blocks, paving slabs (6) or cast footings. There are
two holes (7) in the bottom of the stand for securing the stand to the
ground mounting.
NOTE!
Remember that the water that drips from the outdoor unit during
defrost must be able to drain (8), the outdoor unit must therefore not
be positioned on asphalt or completely covering slabs where water
cannot drain easily.
Remember that the outdoor unit can move during defrost, use two
suitable, flexible hoses for connection to the end of the pipe from the
heat pump and the pipes on the outdoor unit.

Thermia Atria Installation instructions 9680-56538001 - Page 10

2.7 Space required around the outdoor unit.

6 Outdoor Air Temperature Sensor

The outdoor sensor should be placed on the north or north-west side of the house.
In the case of houses up to three storeys high, the sensor should be placed at a height of about 2/3 of the house to get as
exact a reading of outdoor air temperature as possible.
In the case of buildings taller than three storeys, the sensor should be placed between the second and third storey. It should
be mounted in a spot that is neither completely protected from the wind nor exposed to direct draught.
It should be placed at least 1 m from ventilation outlets or similar devices radiating heat.
If the sensor is embedded, the conduit should be air-tight to prevent the sensor from being affected by draught.

7 Electric installation
Connections

All electrical wiring must be carried out according to existing

local and national codes and regulations under the supervision

of a certified electrician. The connection of the heatpump to the

mains supply shall be a hardwired connection, and a multi-pole

switch (safety switch) with a minimum contact opening of 3 mm

must be installed in the power supply line to the unit.

(Max load for external units is 2 A.)
Electric Current!

Power is supplied to the connecting devices and may cause

electric shock. Therefore disconnect the power supply before

starting the electrical installation! The heat pump is factory

wired internally. Therefore the electric installation is mainly

limited to the following:
Connecting the mains supply
Remove the front panel to get access to the terminal blocks.
Pass the mains lead to the terminal blocks through the bushing
provided in the top plate.
Connect the mains lead to the terminal block (see fig. 8)

ATTENTION: The mains lead may only be connected to the

terminal block that is provided for this purpose. No other

terminal blocks may be used.

ATTENTION: Dont forget to adjust the value for max. capacity

of auxiliary heater (see p. 41:Factory Settings).

7.3 Optional Functions

When installing Thermia Atria, the heat pump can be reconnected,
if necessary, to produce hotter water for the heating system and
domestic warm water system.

This is carried out by:

Moving the standard grey cables that are mounted on pressure
switch A to B.
The pressure switches are installed on the delivery line of the
compressor.
NOTE!
Never reconnect the heat pump for higher temperatures if the
heating or warm water system does not require it.
Higher temperatures put greater loads on the heat pump.

Thermia Atria Installation instructions 9680-56538001 - Page 24

8 Filling the chilled water system

When you fill the chilled water circuit, the chilled water pump must be running. Therefore, the electrical installation must have been carried out
before filling.
Ethylene glycol or ethanol with anti-corrosion protection additives of 45 percent volume must be used as anti-freeze, which corresponds to
freeze protection to minimum -32C. This mixture withstands temperatures of a minimum of -50C before risk of cracking. It is very important
that only ethylene glycol is used, other types of anti-freezes are too viscous at coolant temperatures of -10C and below. We recommend that
the coolant is mixed and that it can withstand temperatures of at least -32C and is checked before filling the system.
The volumes of the coolant system are as follows:
Heat pump (exchanger, pipe and outer jacket) approximately 47 litres
Expansion tank approximately 3 litres
External section approximately 7 litres
28 mm pipe (between HP & outdoor unit) approximately 0.5 litres per metre of pipe
Note that it is important for the installations function and reliability that the coolant side is completely bled in connection with operation.
Remember to also bleed the outdoor unit several times during operation.
Remove the right side panel from the outdoor unit, there is a bleed nipple at the top on both collection pipes for bleeding the outdoor unit.
Select operating mode Off (see p. 45).
Mix the correct proportions of water and anti-freeze liquid in a container (66) (e.g. plastic tub).

ATTENTION! Each filling must be well mixed. Then fill the system with the chilled water mixture from the tub (66) with the help of an external
pump (67) strong enough to vent the chilled water loop. (See diagram on the following page.)
Remove the venting vessel and connect the discharge side of the pump to the charging connection at the shut-off valve (62).

Close shut-off valve (57).

Open shut-off valve (62) and (64).
Open shut-off valve (61) and connect a hose between the valve and the chilled water tub.
Start the external pump (67) to fill the chilled water loop. Then start the chilled water pump (29) manually from the
display menu Manual Test

Volume in outdoor unit:
7 litres
Total:
67 litres

WARNING!
Ethylene glycol must be handled in accordance with
the instructions on the package!

Thermia Atria Installation instructions 9680-56538001 - Page 26

Run the chilled water pump and the external pump in series until the liquid coming out of the return hose from
shut-off valve (61) is free of air.
Stop the chilled water pump (29) from the display menu Manual Test but let the external pump go on running.
To eliminate air between the valves (61) and (62), open valve (57) (external pump still running).
Close valve (61) and pressurize the system by means of the external pump. ATTENTION: No more than max.
300kPa (3 bar).
Close valve (62).
Stop the external pump (67) and disconnect the filling arrangement.
If there is any chilled water mixture left, keep this available in a suitable plastic container to be used for later filling of the system
(to be left with the customer).
Start the chilled water pump (29) manually and check that the level in the expansion/venting vessel stabilizes.
ATTENTION! If the system has to be refilled, the chilled water pump (29) must run. To refill the system, remove the safety valve (60)
and fill the vessel through the safety valve connection to about 2/3 of the vessel. Then reconnect the safety valve.
Keep the chilled water pump (29) running until all the air contained in the system has assembled in the expansion/venting
vessel. During this procedure, the water level in the vessel will sink and more chilled water must be added. (See above.)
Open the safety valve (60) to discharge positive pressure, if any. The water level should not be less than 2/3 of the
vessel. Check that valve (61) is closed.
Provided the heating system has been filled with water, change operating mode from

to the desired position.

9 Preparations and checks before start-up

The installation may only be put into service after the heating
system, the warm water circuit, if applicable, and the chilled water circuit have
been filled. Otherwise the pumps risk being damaged.
Should you wish to use auxiliary heating exclusively, first make
sure that the heating system has been properly filled. Then
make sure that neither the chilled water pump nor the compressor
can start. Do this by selecting the operating mode ADD on the
control panel.
Please pay attention to the safety instructions!

In addition to this, check the following items before start-up:

Check all connections for leakage.
Start the compressor and check its rotation direction. If it rotates in the wrong
direction, this will be indicated on the control panel; the message
PHASE ORDER will be displayed.
If this is the case, two of the mains supply phases must be reversed
(e.g. L1 and L3).
Adjust the factory setting to the customers heat load.

9.2 Conditions for start of heating mode

9.2.1 Heat pump (compressor)

The integral value is lower than the value selected for Integral HP and
more than 5 minutes have elapsed since the heat pump was stopped and
the re-starting delay as set in Hpinterval has expired and
the regulating pressure switch is closed (=1) and
the outdoor temperature is below the value selected for heating stop.

9.2.2 Auxiliary heating

The integral value is lower than the value of Integral HP + Integral ADD and
the actual feed line temperature is more than 3 lower than the setpoint value and
the regulating pressure switch is closed (=1)
Additional heater Stage 4 (12 kW) and 5 (15 kW) are only activated when the temperature is -21C or colder.
These 2 stages are never activated when the compressor is in operation. Applies only to the 400V version.
The 230V version does not have stages 4 and 5.

9.3 Conditions for stop of heating mode

9.3.1 Heat pump (compressor)
The integral value is higher than 0 min or
the return line temperature is higher than or equal to the value selected for maximum return line temperature or
the outdoor temperature is higher than the value selected for heating stop.
When defrosting starts, the compressor stops and remains inactive during the defrosting period.
The compressor stops automatically when the outside temperature is -21C or colder, heat is then produced
by the additional heater.
9.3.2 Auxiliary heating
The integral value is higher than the value selected for Integral HP or
the actual feed line temperature is more than 3C higher than the set-point value.
Thermia Atria Installation instructions 9680-56538001 - Page 30

9.4 Conditions for start of warm water production

9.4.1 Heat pump (compressor)
The warm water temperature is equal to or lower than the value selected for start of warm water production (WH.start) or
the warm water temperature exceeds the setpoint value for WH start by no more than 2 when heating mode is stopped (referred
to as Top-Up)
9.4.2 Auxiliary heating
The compressor stops automatically when the outside temperature is -21C or colder, warm water is then produced
by the additional heater.
Normally, auxiliary heating (ADD) will not be used for warm water production except in the following cases when the VL system was
selected:
1. ADD is already running at the start of WH mode.
2. TOPHEAT mode (legionella function): ADD is added 2 minutes after start of WH mode.
3. Operating mode ADD was selected.

9.5 Conditions for stop of warm water production

9.5.1 Heat pump (compressor)
When the regulating pressure switch has been open for more than 5 seconds (40 seconds during the two first minutes after start
of WH mode) or
When there is a simultaneous heating demand (operation will then alternate between heating and warm water production according
to the preset values for Heattime and WH time) or
When the maximum WH time of 45 minutes has elapsed; after this, the demand for heating will be checked for 5 minutes.
When defrosting starts, the compressor stops and remains inactive during the defrosting period.
The compressor stops automatically when the outside temperature is -21C or colder, warm water is then produced by the additional heater.
9.5.2 Auxiliary heating
In the case of the VL system, WH mode is stopped:
when the set value for TOPHEATstop has been reached, or
when operating mode ADD was selected and the temperature is equal to the preset value for WH ADD.

10.3 Control System - Possible Operating Modes

The menu OPERATE - displayed on the control panel - allows you to choose between the following five operating modes:
OPERATION OFF: Heat pump is off. Under OPERATION, the display shows the symbol

If this operating mode is selected in winter for extended periods of time, please note that the heating system must
be emptied of water to avoid any damage caused by temperatures below zero.
OPERATION AUTO: In this mode, operation of heat pump and auxiliary heater is regulated automatically by the
control computer. On the control panel, the message AUTO will be displayed under the heading OPERATION.
OPERATION HEATPUMP: In this mode, the heat pump unit (the compressor) only is allowed to operate. On the
control panel, the message HEATPUMP will be displayed under the heading OPERATION.
OPERATION ADD: In this mode, the auxiliary heater only is allowed to operate. This mode may be useful when in a
new heat pump installation the chilled water system is not yet filled and ready to take into service.
On the control panel, the message ADD will be displayed under OPERATION only. No heat will be sent to the
heating system. On the control panel, the message WARMWATER will be displayed under OPERATION.
How to change operating mode:

10.4 Heating System

10.4.1 Adjustment of ROOM value
By adjusting the ROOM value you can modify the heat curve and, as a consequence, the room temperature. If you modify
the heat curve by changing the ROOM value, this doesnt affect the gradient of the curve, which is the case if you adjust the
CURVE value. Instead, when the ROOM value is changed, the whole curve undergoes a proportional parallell shift: is the
ROOM value changed by 1C then the heat curve will shift by 3C. The relation feed line temperature -outside air temperature
will not be affected as the change in feed line temperature will be the same along the whole curve (see diagram).
Adjustment of indoor temperature by changing the ROOM value as described above is only good for temporary changes.
Long term adjustments of the indoor temperature should be effected by adjustment of the heat curve itself, this being the
most cost and energy efficient method (please refer to Adjustment of Heat Curve on the next page.) Factory setting of the
ROOM value is 20C.

10.4.2 How to change the ROOM value:

1 Press the plus (up) or minus (down) button once
to open the ROOM value.

Increase or reduce the ROOM value to the

desired temperature, using the plus (up) or
minus (down) button. Wait for 10 seconds

10.5 Adjustment of Heat Curve

10.5.1 Adjustment of the CURVE value
You can adjust the heat curve by changing the CURVE value. This value indicates the feed line temperature to the
radiators at 0C outside air temperature. If the outside air temperature is lower than 0C, the temperature of the
feed line will be higher than 40C. Is the outside air temperature higher than 0C, the feed line temperature will be
lower than 40C. If you increase the value for CURVE, the heat curve gradient will become steeper; if you reduce the
value the gradient will level out.
This is the best way to make long-term adjustments of the indoor temperature as it is both cost and energy efficient.
If you wish to make a temporary adjustment of the temperature, you should change the ROOM value (see
Adjustment of the ROOM value on the preceding page).
Factory setting is 40C at 0C outside air temperature. The value is adjustable from 22C to 56C.

10.5.2 How to change the CURVE value:

1 Press the left- or right-hand button once to reach the main menu
INFORMATION. The cursor will be at the Operation menu.

10.6 Maximum Return Line Temperature for the Heating System

Factory setting of the maximum return line temperature is 48C. This value must be adapted to each individual installation. For a new value to be entered, the heat pump must be in heating mode and operating in
a stable manner.
The value of the maximum return line temperature will be adjusted in the Service menu under
HEATPUMP.
Establish the difference between the is-values of feed line and return lines,
in this case 36 30 = 6.
Deduct this value from 55C (maximum feed line temperature), i.e. 55 6 = 49.
Enter the new value 49 in the Service menu under HEATPUMP.

10.7 Adjustment of Room Factor

The room factor will only be displayed if a room sensor has been installed. The room factor influences the
heat curve and is adjustable from 0 (= no influcence) to 4 (= maximum influence).
For floor heating, a setting between 1-3 is recommended and for radiator heating between 2-4. Adjustment
is made in the menu Heat Curve under ROOMFACTOR.

10.8 Hot Water Production

The temperature of the warm water to the water heater is controlled by the regulating pressure
switch and cannot be adjusted.

10.8.1 Viewing the warm water temperature

To view the actual warm water temperture, do the following:
1 Press the right- or left-hand button to open the main menu INFORMATION.
The cursor will be at the OPERATION menu.
2 Press the minus (down) button to move the cursor to TEMPERATURE
3 Open TEMPERATURE by pressing the right-hand button.
4 Press the minus (down) button to move the cursor to WARMWATER.
5 Open WARMWATER by pressing the right-hand button.
A graphic representation of warm water temperatures during the last hour will be
displayed.
6 Press the left-hand button three times to return to the main menu.
The values displayed after WARMWATER represent the actual warm water temperature and in
brackets the temperature at which warm water production is allowed to start.
When the temperature falls below the starting value, warm water production will be resumed.

Thermia Atria Installation instructions 9680-56538001 - Page 49

10.9 Defrost function

Defrost is completely requirement dependent, it starts when necessary and stops when no longer needed.
During defrost, the compressor and fan stop. If heating or warm water is required when defrosting starts, it
will resume immediately after defrosting has finished.
Normally, no adjustments to the factory settings are required.
Defrosting starts as necessary according to a certain curve that refers to the outdoor temperature and the
Brine In temperature. The angle of the curve can be changed, using the 2 parameters, and therefore the
defrosting start temperature.
In the Service menu DEFROST the start time of defrost can be adjusted by changing one or both of the parameters DEFR CURVE 0 and DEFR CURVE -20. DEFR CURVE 0 is factory set at -10C, which means that when the
outdoor temperature is 0C defrosting starts when Brine In is -10C.
Defrosting stops when no longer required. This occurs by shunting out a certain temperature (DEFR
TEMPERATURE) to the outdoor unit and measuring the temperature of Brine In. Defrosting stops when Brine In
reaches set temperature of STOP DEFR. The temperature of Brine In increases as frost/ice on the outdoor unit
melts, when it reaches the stop value, the outdoor unit is free of ice.
The brine temperature that is shunted out to defrost the outdoor unit can be adjusted by increasing or
decreasing the value in DEFR TEMPERATURE and the stop temperature to be reached to complete defrosting
can be adjusted by adjusting the value in STOP DEFR.

13 Refrigerant
The compressor (refrigerant) circuit of the heat pump is charged with the refrigerant R404A.
Service and repair work on the refrigerant circuit must be carried out by certified refrigeration personnel only.
Flammability
R404A is neither flammable nor explosive.
Toxicity
Under normal circumstances, and used correctly, the refrigerant has a low level of toxicity. In spite of this, it may cause injury (even danger to
life) under abnormal conditions or if deliberately misused.
Refrigerant gases are many times heavier than air. If there is a leak of refrigerant in a small and badly ventilated room, strong concentrations
of refrigerant gas might form with resulting lack of oxygen and risk of suffocation. Therefore, the heat pump should always be placed in a
room with good ventilation.
In connection with open flame the refrigerant forms phosgene, a pungent gas that is easily recognizable by its smell already in
concentrations well below the allowed limit. In this case, evacuate the premises and air well.
Any person showing symptoms of intoxication must be moved into the fresh air immediately.
Service work on the refrigerant circuit
When repairs are made to the refrigerant circuit, no refrigerant may escape to the open air. All refrigerant must be destroyed. according to
reguoations. Draining and filling of new refrigerant is made through the service valves. For required amount of new refrigerant please refer to
the unit nameplate. If other refrigerant is used than R404A the Thermia Vrme warranty will be cancelled unless the new refrigerant was previously confirmed in writing by Thermia as being an approved replacement for R404A.
Scrapping
Before scrapping the heat pump, the refrigerant must be destroyed according to local and national health and environment regulations.
