Motion (Distance) Formula
Motion problems are based on the formula
d = rt
where d = distance, r = rate and t = time.
When solving motion problems, a sketch is often helpful and a table can be used for organizing
the information.
Example:
John and Philip who live 14 miles apart start at noon to walk toward each other at rates of 3 mph
and 4 mph respectively. In how many hours will they meet?
Solution:
Let x = time walked.
r
t
d
John
3
x
3x
Philip
4
x
4x
3x + 4x = 14
7x = 14
x=2
They will meet in 2 hours.
Example:
In still water, Peters boat goes 4 times as fast as the current in the river. He takes a 15-mile trip
up the river and returns in 4 hours. Find the rate of the current.
Solution:
Let x = rate of the current.
r
t
d
down river 4x + x
15 / 5x
15
up river
4x - x
15 / 3x

Verbal Reasoning :: Logical Sequence of Words

In this type of question, some words are given. You have to arrange these words in a meaningful
order. The order may be according to age, size and need etc.
Example 1:
Arrange the following words in a meaningful order.
1. Death 2. Marriage 3. Education
4. Birth 5. Funeral
(A) 5, 1, 2, 3, 4
(B) 4, 2, 3, 1, 5
(C) 4, 3, 2, 5, 1
(D) 4, 3, 2, 1, 5

Answer is Option D
Explanation:
First of all a man is born then he takes education; after this he is married. Then after sometimes
he dies. After death the order is of Funeral. So the correct order is 4, 3, 2, 1 and 5.
Example 2:
Arrange the following words in a logical sequence.
1. Grass 2. Curd 3. Milk
4. Cow 5. Butter
(A) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
(B) 2, 3, 4, 5, 1
(C) 4, 1, 3, 2, 5
(D) 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
Answer is Option C
Explanation:
We know that cow eats grass and then gives milk. With the milk, curd is made and then from
curd, butter is made.
Hence logical sequence is Cow, Grass, Milk, Curd, Butter.
The rate of the current is 2 mph.

Verbal Reasoning :: Series Completion

Directions to Solve
Choose the correct alternative that will continue the same pattern and replace the
question mark in the given series.
1. 120, 99, 80, 63, 48, ?
A.35
B.38
C.39
D.40
Answer & Explanation
Answer: Option A
Explanation:
The pattern is - 21, - 19, - 17, - 15,.....
So, missing term = 48 - 13 = 35.

Answer & Explanation
Answer: Option D
Explanation:
The digits are removed one by one from the beginning and the end in order
alternately
so as to obtain the subsequent terms of the series.
3. 3, 10, 101,?
A.10101

B.10201

C.10202
D.11012
Answer & Explanation
Answer: Option C
Explanation:
Each term in the series is obtained by adding 1 to the square of the preceding term.
So, missing term = (101)2 + 1 = 10202.
4. In the series 2, 6, 18, 54, ...... what will be the 8th term ?
A.4370
B.4374
C.7443
D.7434
Answer & Explanation
Answer: Option B
Explanation:
Clearly, 2 x 3 = 6, 6 x 3 = 18, 18 x 3 = 54,.....
So, the series is a G.P. in which a = 2, r = 3.
Therefore 8th term = ar8-1 = ar7 = 2 x 37 = (2 x 2187) = 4374.
5. 125,80,45,20,?
A.5
C.10
Answer & Explanation
Answer: Option A
Explanation:
The pattern is - 45, - 35, - 25, .....
So, missing term = 20 - 15 = 5.

1. The total of the ages of Amar, Akbar and Anthony is 80 years. What was the total of their ages
three years ago ?
A.71 years
B.72 years
C.74 years
D.77 years
Answer & Explanation
Answer: Option A
Explanation:
Required sum = (80 - 3 x 3) years = (80 - 9) years = 71 years.
2. Two bus tickets from city A to B and three tickets from city A to C cost Rs. 77 but three tickets
from city A to B and two tickets from city A to C cost Rs. 73. What are the fares for cities B
and C from A ?
A.Rs. 4, Rs. 23
B.Rs. 13, Rs. 17
C.Rs. 15, Rs. 14
D.Rs. 17, Rs. 13
Answer & Explanation
Answer: Option B
Explanation:
Let Rs. x be the fare of city B from city A and Rs. y be the fare of city C from city A.
Then, 2x + 3y = 77 ...(i) and
3x + 2y = 73 ...(ii)
Multiplying (i) by 3 and (ii) by 2 and subtracting, we get: 5y = 85 or y = 17.
Putting y = 17 in (i), we get: x = 13.
3. An institute organised a fete and 1/5 of the girls and 1/8 of the boys participated in the same.

5. A, B, C, D and E play a game of cards. A says to B, "If you give me three cards, you will have
as many as E has and if I give you three cards, you will have as many as D has." A and B
together have 10 cards more than what D and E together have. If B has two cards more than
what C has and the total number of cards be 133, how many cards does B have ?
A.22
B.23
C.25
D.35
Answer & Explanation
Answer: Option C
Explanation:
Clearly, we have :
B-3 = E ...(i)
B + 3 = D ...(ii)
A+B = D + E+10 ...(iii)
B = C + 2 ...(iv)
A+B + C + D + E= 133 ...(v)
From (i) and (ii), we have : 2 B = D + E ...(vi)
From (iii) and (vi), we have : A = B + 10 ...(vii)
Using (iv), (vi) and (vii) in (v), we get:
(B + 10) + B + (B - 2) + 2B = 133 5B = 125

B = 25.

Verbal Reasoning :: Direction Sense Test

Introduction:
There are four main directions - East, West, North and South as
shown below:
There are four cardinal directions
- North-East (N-E), North-West
(N-W), South-East (S-E), and
South-West (S-W) as shown below:
1. At the time of sunrise if a man stands facing the east, his shadow will be towards west.
2. At the time of sunset the shadow of an object is always in the east.
3. If a man stands facing the North, at the time of sunrise his shadow will be towards his left
and at the time of sunset it will be towards his right.
4. At 12:00 noon, the rays of the sun are vertically downward hence there will be no
shadow.

Main types of questions are given below:

Type 1:
Siva starting from his house, goes 5 km in the East, then he turns to his left and goes 4 km.
Finally he turns to his left and goes 5 km. Now how far is he from his house and in what
direction?
Solution:
From third position it is clear he is 4
km from his house and is in North
direction.

Type 2:
Suresh starting from his house, goes 4 km in the East, then he turns to his right and goes 3 km.
What minimum distance will be covered by him to come back to his house?
Solution:
Type 3:
One morning after sunrise Juhi while going to school met
Lalli at Boring road crossing. Lalli's shadow was exactly to
the right of Juhi. If they were face to face, which direction
was Juhi facing?
Solution: In the morning sunrises in the east.
So in morning the shadow falls towards the west.
Now Lalli's shadow falls to the right of the Juhi. Hence Juhi is facing South.
Type 4:
Hema starting from her house
walked 5 km to reach the crossing
of Palace. In which direction she
was going, a road opposite to this
direction goes to Hospital. The road
to the right goes to station. If the

road which goes to station is just opposite to the road which IT-Park, then in which direction to
Hema is the road which goes to IT-Park?
Solution:
From II it is clear that the road which goes to IT-Park is left to Hema.
