Prepare To Apply

1. Collect High School Academic Records


Applicants who are completing or have completed high school, and have not
done any post-secondary coursework
Who Must Submit

Applicants who completed less than one academic year at a non-U.S. postsecondary institution, or fewer than 15 college-level semester hours at a U.S.
regionally accredited college or university
Original transcripts and mark sheets showing all completed coursework

What To Submit

Original exam certificates or copy of the certificates attested by the appropriate


examination board. Exam certificates attested by high schools are not acceptable.
Certified copy of high school diploma, if earned
Certified literal English translation of all academic records

Criteria

The equivalent grade point average (GPA) of a B (3.0 out of 4.0) or higher

2. Collect Post-Secondary Academic Records


Who Must Submit

Applicants who have done any post-secondary coursework


Original transcripts and mark sheets showing all completed coursework

What To Submit

Copy of non-U.S. diploma, graduation certificates and degree certificates if earned,


attested by the degree-granting institution
Certified literal English translation of all academic records

Criteria

Non-U.S. post-secondary coursework: The equivalent of a B average (3.0 out of 4.0)


or higher. For applicants who attended a curriculum that distinguishes the higher
and lower division (+ and -) in the grading scale, a GPA of 2.5 (C+) is required.
Special major requirements may apply.
U.S. and non-U.S. GPA must each meet the majors requirement.

IMPORTANT NOTES
Complete educational background. Applicants must submit official academic records from every college and
universityU.S. and non-U.S.they have ever attended, even if they might not wish to transfer credits.
English translation. If academic records are issued in a language other than English, applicants must submit records
in the original language and a certified English translation. If applicants utilize U.S. translation services, the translator
must be a member of the American Translators Association.
Acceptable academic records. The determination of whether an academic record is official and acceptable rests
solely with the Office of Admissions. Specific requirements on academic records from certain countries apply.
No evaluations. Evaluations of academic records are not accepted.
No return of documents. All submitted documents become the property of the University of Houston and will not be
returned.
Misrepresentation of academic records. Applicants must not make inaccurate statements or submit false materials
in connection to their applications. Misrepresentations may lead to application denial, admission withdrawal or
rescission of awarded degrees. The determination that an application is inaccurate or contains misrepresentations
rests solely with the Office of Admissions.

3. Meet the English Language Requirement


Who Must Submit

All applicants who graduated from high school in a country other than a
recognized English-speaking country must achieve one of the following.
TOEFL iBT (www.toefl.com): A total score of 79 or higher

What To Submit

TOEFL PBT: A total score of 550 or higher


IELTS (www.ielts.org): An overall band score of 6.5 or higher
Applicants who have achieved one of the following:
High school diploma from a U.S. high school. Submit a sealed official high school
transcript showing the diploma earned. GED does not waive the requirement.

Who Are Exempt

Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, bachelors degree or higher from a U.S.


regionally accredited college or university. The applicant must submit an official
transcript showing the degree awarded. Associate of Applied Science degree does
not waive the requirement.
A degree from a recognized English-speaking country, and the Office of Admissions
considers it equivalent to U.S. high school diploma, four-year bachelors degree or
higher. Submission of the original degree or an attested copy of the degree is
required. Associate degrees from these countries do not waive the requirement.
Graduation from the University of Houston Language and Culture Center Level 6.
Attending other intensive English programs does not waive the requirement.

4. Take the SAT or ACT

Criteria

SAT: Minimum Critical Reading + Math = 1100, minimum Critical Reading = 500 and
minimum Math = 500. SAT Subject Tests are not required.

5. Prepare Supplemental Materials


The following colleges and majors have additional admission criteria:
Architecture applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a portfolio to the College of Architecture.
Music applicants must apply separately to the School of Music and audition.
Theater and Dance applicants must audition.
Honors College applicants must apply separately.

IMPORTANT NOTES
Deadlines. Completed online application, application fee, all required official academic records and required
official test scores must reach the Office of Admissions before the deadline. Students completing their applications
after the deadline will not be considered for admission.
Mailing. Due to the time it takes for items to be received by postal mail, please plan ahead and submit all
application materials in advance.

Name mismatch. The name appearing on your online application, academic records and test score reports should
match the name on your passport. Otherwise, please notify the Office of Admissions immediately.

3. Submit Your Application Materials

Apply to the University of Houston-Main Campus at www.applytexas.org.


Once submitted, the application will not be deferred.

Application fee

USD75 for international applicants. USD50 for U.S. applicants. One fee for
each application. This fee cannot be refunded or deferred.

TOEFL or IELTS scores

TOEFL scores must be sent by the testing agency directly to the University
of Houston, destination code 6870. Original IELTS Test Report Forms must
be mailed to the Office of Admissions.

SAT or ACT scores


(Mandatory for certain applicants)

SAT and ACT scores must be sent by the testing agency directly to the
University of Houston, codes 6870 (SAT) and 4236 (ACT).

4. Submit Your I-20 Documents


If you wish to receive an I-20 to apply for an F-1 visa and maintain F-1 status, please submit the following.
Letter of Financial
Backing Form

The form must be less than six months old from the date of the sponsors
signature.

Bank statement

The bank statement must be less than six months old and it must indicate a
minimum balance of USD28,600 or the equivalent.

Copy of passport

Submit a copy of U.S. visa, if applicable.

Student Address/Photo
Identification Form

You must provide a non-U.S. address.

5. Submit Supplemental Materials


The following colleges and majors have additional selection criteria:
Architecture applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a portfolio to the College of Architecture.
