6.

DISINNFECTION OF DRINGKING WATER SYSTEM LINES:

6.5.1

Proposed Looping Plan

The disinfection of the drinking water lines will be accomplished in a one loop.

6.5.2 From its experience in the field of disinfection of water line system, XXX proposes the
following procedure for disinfection of the subject water lines at the above project. The
purpose of this method is to disinfect the system from coliform bacteria and make it safe for
the purposes of use
The proposed disinfection procedure includes the following steps:
1. Preliminary water flushing
2. Disinfection
3. Draining and re-flushing with water
6.5.3
1

Method of Proceeding
Preliminary Water Flushing:

Connect the XXX disinfection pump discharge to the battery limit valve removed point using
chemical resistant hoses and valves etc. Fill water (De-Min/DI/potable water) in XXX
disinfection setup and start open flushing the water lines to get rid of loose debris which
might have introduced in the system during the construction period. Continue flushing until
the effluent water through all the utility points (e,g, at safety shower /kitchen etc.) is free from
sand, loose debris and foreign material and it looks clean.
2

Disinfection:

Prepare a chlorinating solution in XXX disinfection setup with chlorinating agent (calcium
hypochlorite) to get a concentration of 25-40ppm of chlorine. Fill the system (water line
network) with this freshly prepared chlorinating solution. Flush each outlet point with this
solution and analyze for chlorine concentration. Once the chlorine reading is stabilized at 2540ppm of chlorine minimum, keep the system locked for 24 hours.
ensure

During this period operate all the valves (by opening and closing) several times to
disinfection of the appurtenances.

After the end of this 24 hours period, the treated water in all the portions of the system
should have a minimum of 10 ppm free chlorine.
3

Draining and re-flushing with water:

After a period of 24 hours drain the system completely to waste and flush with fresh
water. Take a sample from the flushing and send for coliform bacteria test from an
independent laboratory
Note:
1. When the sample is collected, the residual chlorine level in the system should not be
more than 3 ppm.
2. Collect the sample from the lines tap only. Do not collect samples from any other valves,
hose or outlet.
If the bacteriological test fails, drain the water and repeat the process from the
beginning.

If the sample shows the absence of coliform bacteria, refill the lines with fresh water
and put in to service.
4

Acceptance:

After the cycle of disinfection, disinfection water sample will be collected and sent to
Laboratory . If the result is ok (absence of coliform bacteria in the test sample), the
disinfection works will be considered as completed and acceptable.
5

Preservation:

After water sample test results are complete, XXX will close the drinking water distribution
network and all isolation valves and protect the system from contamination.
