LETTER FROM THE TE

magazine
Are you settling into 2015?

Its hard to believe just one short month ago marked the start of a new year.
The holidays and their aftermath can be a chaotic whirlwind, paired with festive
parties and busy schedules. Its always an anticipated part of the year, but its
easy to get wrapped up in the frenzied nature of it all. January is a great time to
reflect on all that was, and all there is to come in the new year.
And then theres February: the calm after the storm. Its an interesting month,
and can be hard to characterize especially here in Wisconsin. It doesnt have
the same fresh, new quality as January, but we havent quite made it to early
spring and all that a new season brings. The bright snow has turned to slush, and
frigid temperatures are just beginning to warm up (sometimes!).
Settling into this month can feel comfortable in a positive way, but also, unfortunately, brings a sense of relaxation that has the potential to slow momentum
and drive toward recently formed New Years resolutions and goals.
The content in the following pages of Natures Pathways is fresh and new each
month, but like February, holds easy, comforting favorites that you can always
count on. Monthly staples like Healthy Kids, Healthy Pets, Herb Blurb and
Healthy Eating are among several articles that will provide new motivation and
the tools to continue the momentum that started 2015.
If one of your missions this year is to learn to self-love and self-care, pay
special attention to Self-love and the healthy ripple effect, by Emily Niesen (she
also provides a delicious recipe for Portobello Open-Faced Sandwiches in this
issue!). Are you working on becoming more organized? The emotional baggage
of clutter, by Jeanine Hanson Lewis is the perfect read to get you started.
Maybe being conscious of your health is a new goal. Weve got you covered!
Did you know snails have over 25,000 teeth? Amy Sergeant, D.D.S., offers
fun crafts for kids and more cool facts in, Childrens Dental Health Month.
In Heart work, Deb Freeman takes a more spiritual approach to health and
focuses on how to stop fear from defining you.
Were looking forward to really delving into 2015, and experiencing all February has to offer.

What is
osteopathy?

By Jed Downs

he purpose of osteopathy is to find health. In the words

of the founder of osteopathy, A.T. Still, To find health
should be the object of the doctor. Anyone can find
disease. Health is not just the absence of symptoms. From an
osteopathic standpoint, health involves the optimization of how
the body functions and interrelates. It requires action on the part
of the patient. Certainly someone who eats a crappy diet with the
plurality of calories coming from high fructose corn syrup and
trans fats and alcohol should not be considered healthy even if
they are young and free of symptoms. The same goes for people
who are sedentary or who have other lifestyle issues.
There are people who have sequelae from injury or who have
chronic diseases, or who do not optimize their ability to be healthy.
Sometimes this is on the basis of medical noncompliance, inability
to afford medications or ignorance of how to prepare healthy food.
Providers of osteopathy seek to find health in the injured, the
chronically ill and in the asymptomatic population. The principle
through which they work is that life is motion. In order to promote
health there must be balanced appropriate motion available to the
organism, in this case the human being. Motion is not just referring to range of motion. Although balanced motion about a joint
is desirable, a gymnast or dancer is not necessarily healthier than
someone who has not focused on extreme flexibility, which goes
beyond the normal populations range. People can understand the
motion of joints. There is a balance in the length of the joint capsule,
the bones are centered about the proper axis of motion, the muscles
influencing the joint are balanced in length, strength and neurological input and sensation. The blood supply must be normal. The
arteries have to be free to deliver oxygen and nutrition, the veins
have to be free to drain away wastes and make room for fresh blood
to come in. The lymphatic system has to drain away and exchange
the extracellular fluid between cell layers and organs.
Most people are not aware of other motions in the body that are
essential to health. Organs, the solid structures in your chest and
abdomen, and viscera, the hollow tubes of your gut also need to
be free to move within their appropriate cavities. To do this they
have to be able to roll off each other during breathing and movement. If this doesnt happen, their function may be impaired.

Natures Pathways | February 2015

Even the brain and its parts need to be able to move relative to the
skull bones and membranes of the skull. If not, individuals may
experience brain fog or headache.
In the days before successful drugs, traditional osteopathy was
an entire medical approach unto itself. In the 1918-1919 influenza
pandemic, the case fatality rate, the percentage of infected patients
dying from the flu is estimated to have been somewhere between 2.5
to 6 percent. Crude data collected by the American Osteopathic Association documented a case fatality rate of 0.25 percent. What they had
to offer were osteopathic mobilization techniques, which optimized
the motions of the ribs, the thoracic spine, pumped lymphatic tissue
and sinuses, and normalized motion of the diaphragm.
The efforts of the osteopaths theoretically prevented stagnation in the lungs and development of secondary pneumonia. They
enhanced drainage from the lungs so that the patients lungs did
not fill up with fluid to the point that they could not exchange
oxygen and carbon dioxide. The osteopaths of the day found and
established increased health within the sick individuals and that
made a difference in death rates from the disease by decreasing
the death rate from 25 in 1,000 to 2.5 in 1,000.
Each body part has its own movement patterns and interfaces
with adjacent structures in ways that are optimal for health and
efficient utilization of energy. In the case of the stomach, for
example, it relates to the spleen, pancreas, transverse colon, left
kidney, diaphragm and esophagus. The back of the skull and
the thoracic spine influence the autonomic nervous input to the
stomach. All should be normalized to address symptoms arising
from problems such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
or hiatal hernia.
Jed Downs, M.D., MPH, has been studying osteopathy since
1995. Formerly, he worked in occupational medicine until pursuing his passion full time at Madison Manual Medicine, 2940
Chapel Valley Road in Fitchburg. He uses osteopathic techniques
to manage consequences (pain and loss of function) of trauma
regardless of etiology, be it birth, sport, MVA, repetitive strain or living life. For
more information, call 608-512-7177, visit http://MadisonManualMedicine.

The emotional
baggage of
clutter

By Jeanine Hanson Lewis

f one of your New Years resolutions was to finally get your

home organized but you have not been able to follow through,
there may be a reason you feel defeated. Everything you own
is filled with memories, associations and stories.
You may ask yourself: Why do I have all of this? You might start
to make unwarranted judgments about yourself. You may feel the
anger of having to deal with the mess. It can be hard to address all
of the emotions that arise. Dont despair. We have all been there at
one time or another. It is just a matter of breaking it down slowly.
Perhaps you are hanging on to the unsorted boxes of belongings
from a departed family member. You may have gifts you no longer
treasure yet feel obligated to store and display. Maybe you feel you paid
too much for something and must keep it until you have somehow
wrung out its full value, or you think you just might need it some day!
If you find yourself carrying on a lengthy dialogue with all of
these things, you may be dealing with the dreaded emotional
baggage of clutter. Dealing with your feelings about your clutter
is more difficult than the physical act of sorting and organizing it.

Here are three ways to get started:

Ask for help. Ask a friend, a family member or a professional

organizer to help you. Choose someone nonjudgmental who has
no emotional attachment to your belongings, so they can help you
to make decisions faster than you can make them alone.
Help someone else. Offer your help to someone in exchange
for their help later. By being on the other end of clutter clearing
with no emotional attachment to their stuff you will gain
insight on how to make good decisions. We all learn by helping
someone else. As a professional organizer, I still learn new ways to
organize, and I go home and put these new ideas to use!
When working alone, start small. Start with creating a list
of the areas you want to organize. Then take each area on the
list and break down the organizing job into smaller tasks. Find
success quickly by starting and finishing something small such as
a kitchen or a junk drawer.
www.naturespathways.com

Dont let the emotional chatter keep you from tackling your
clutter. One woman said, It is freeing to dump the things that
remind you of promises not kept to yourself.
Tear out this sheet and give these ideas a try. This may be all you
need to crack open your hesitation to get started. This is a big
topic for many, so Ill revisit it next month with tips for making
decisions about some of your tougher belongings. For hands-on
help now, call a professional organizer.
Jeanine Hanson Lewis, owner of The Organizers, has been helping
clients clear clutter, organize, feng shui and redecorate their homes,

Learning to

By Angela Kowieski

ometimes I wonder, Why do we treat our cars better than

we treat ourselves? For instance, we change the oil in our
vehicles (or we are supposed to) every 3 months/3,000
miles, we get our brakes and shocks done when needed, and we
get a tune-up for our vehicles when necessary. All these things we

do for our cars, yet arent our bodies and overall wellness just as
important? Shouldnt we be maintaining ourselves just as much as
our vehicles? We all seem to get so wrapped up in this fast paced
world that we forget to take care of ourselves better than our
material items. We then, in turn, get burnt out, wore down and
our health deteriorates. We all know that if we took better care of
ourselves and bodies our health would overall just be better.
Doing things that make us feel happy or relaxed definitely
lowers cortisol levels in the body. This will in turn lower how
stressed you feel. Higher cortisol levels also attribute to unwanted
belly fat (that stuff we all sooo love NOT!). So please love yourself and treat yourself right. Do what you know will make you
feel great and healthy. We treat our car to an oil change every 3
months as part of its maintenance. Shouldnt that be part of our
own maintenance as well?

Here are a few ideas about how to relax or

to make you feel good:

Read a book. Something that interests you or that can pull

you in so you can forget about the stresses from your day.
Take a nice long hot bath or shower. If youre soaking in
the tub, its nice to add some sea salt or Epsom salt with nice
essential oils. Lavender is very relaxing.
Get a massage or facial. Its amazing what 1-hour of peace
and quiet with someone relaxing your whole body can do.
Get your feet rubbed! You and a partner can exchange,
but if that is not an option, get a pedicure.
www.naturespathways.com

Get some exercise. Do something that you love to do so

you will stick with it longer! Swimming, yoga, zumba, basketball, bike riding, etc. are all great options.
Take a walk with a friend. This is a great time to catch
each other up on your lives too.
Do something that expresses your emotions
creatively. Draw, paint, sing in the shower and dance in
your living room. You can then let it all out and in turn let go
of any built up emotions that may be blocking your energy.
Take a nap. We let our kids do it, so why cant we! Remember this is great maintenance.
Watch a movie or a show that you like. Something that
will make you laugh is the best.
Have a drink! Red wine has been shown to reduce cortisol
levels in the body, which will lower your stress levels and
belly fat. Just dont overdo it; too much of a good thing is too
much!
These are just a few pointers and tips. Please love yourself and
take care of yourself. You should always be thinking about selfmaintenance!

Why we love
our
pets!

By Katie Hilst, DVM

hat is love? Websters dictionary says it is a strong

affection or liking for someone or something.
Companionate love has been defined as the love we
have for our friends and family members. This love is not the
romantic type of love, but has high levels of attachment, commitment and intimacy. Our relationship with our pets can mirror a
relationship we would have with a child we cuddle our pets,
play with our pets, talk to our pets (sometimes baby talk), and
of course, we feed and take physical care of our pets. Our relationship with our pets can also give us a feeling of safety and security. Pets can comfort us when we are sad, alert us to danger, and
happily greet us when we return home. The association between
people and pets goes back a long, long time. There is an ancient
burial site in Israel from 12,000 years ago with a puppy buried
with a human, who was placed with his hand around the dog.
Over the centuries, and around the world, animals have been our
companions, helpers and protectors.
Pet companionship is beneficial in many ways. Pet owners have
been shown to have lower risk factors for cardiovascular disease,
lower blood pressure and less intense reactions to stress. Interacting with a pet can lower heart rate and blood pressure. Oxytocin,
a chemical found in our brain, has been called the neurochemical of love. It is produced in our brain when someone treats us
with kindness. Pets can trigger the release of oxytocin in our brain
when we interact with them.
So do we love our pets because they make us feel better, or do
we feel better because we love our pets? I believe we feel better
because we love our pets. Our pets teach us two very important
12

Natures Pathways | February 2015

life lessons: to live in the moment and unconditional love.

Pets are the masters of living in the moment, being present in the
here and now and enjoying what is right in front of them. They do
not worry about the future, their retirement, how they look or their
weight. They are glad to lay in the sun, chase a squirrel, eat a treat or
sniff a tree. They teach us the art of living today and enjoying what
we have instead of worrying about what we dont.
Our pets love us absolutely without judgment, no matter what we
do, what we say or how we act. They love us without any strings
attached. They love us unconditionally. They love us when we yell at
them, they love us when we pet them. Our pets see us at our worst,
and they love us. In my faith, unconditional love is how we are loved
by God, and I believe that our pets are sent to us from Heaven, to
show us how to love them and better love and treat each other.
We are drawn to our pets for companionship, protection and help.
They make us feel more calm, help lower our blood pressure and
stress levels. We feel comforted by their presence. They even trigger
feel good hormones in our brain. We love our pets because they
teach us how to live in the moment, be grateful for what we have and
how to love unconditionally. Pets make us better people.

Essential oils:
Promising help
for autism and
attention deficit
disorders

By Debbie Armstrong

ometime during the preschool years you notice your child

has stopped responding to his/her name and then oral
communication may cease or slow down. You may notice
less eye contact or social interaction. Often you will notice repetitive behaviors or nonfunctional use of toys. You may notice an
inability to stay on task or stay focused on an activity. Noise or
lights could be disturbing to your child. You or others may notice
that your child is clumsy, awkward, seems irritated by the clothes
they wear or are very picky eaters. These behaviors and more
could be the result of attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism.
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke
(NINDS) confers that autism is a spectrum disorder that is part
of a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders, which can be
typified by delays in social interaction, communication and repetitive patterns of behavior.
ADD/ADHD are also neurodevelopment disorders. They are
characterized by the inability to focus and listen to directions.
Because ADD/ADHD can be part of the autism spectrum, they can
be misdiagnosed. Both disorders have varying degrees of severity.
Many parents and researchers believe that environmental
toxins, exposure to mercury from the MMR, metals from vaccinations and other medications affect these disorders. People affected
with ADHD/ADD and autism may see improvement in some
symptoms when toxins and metals are removed from the body.
Therapeutic essential oils have the ability to detoxify and remove
metals from the body, as well as stimulate the limbic region of the
brain connected to the emotional and hormonal centers. Scientists also believe that by stimulating the limbic region of the brain
people with ADD/ADHD and autism may also see improvement
in their symptoms.
It has been proven that by inhaling these oils childrens brainwaves are able to settle into normal patterns, while improving
www.naturespathways.com

their behavior and academic performance. The American Medical

Association Journal has published a study showing these benefits.
With studies such as this there is hope for the children of our
future. Therapeutic grade essential oils have the ability to detoxify, stimulate the limbic region and oxygenate the body, which
research has found to be helpful to individuals with ADD/ADHD
and autism.

Heart
work

By Deb Freeman, CSLC, CMST

piritual holistic life coaching is heart

work. Have you ever had your heart
broken with hurt feelings? Have you
ever had your heart swell with pride or love
for yourself or someone else? Our heart is one
of the areas where we feel. When we open our
heart chakra (the bodys love energy center)
we allow that heart work to begin. If a person
really, really wants to make changes in their
life and uses a certified life coach to help them
make those changes, it is going to take work.

And the majority of that work is going to be

hurtful. You will be bringing up memories
that you have suppressed for years. The good
news is that you have already been through
the history of those memories and youre still
here! You have heard the saying, If God can
bring me to it, He can bring me through it,
right? Bringing up those memories again,
using the right tools, will help you to let them
go instead of pushing them back down and
when you can let them go, you can heal. Once

you heal, you open yourself to creating the

vibrant, healthy, happy life you deserve.
Did you know that life is about you? We
are brought up to believe that it is wrong
to put ourselves first, so we start to live
our lives how others want us to live. Do
you still say to yourself, When I grow up I
want to be _____, and you are in your 20s,
30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, etc.? Do you really know
who you are?
Fear is the only thing stopping you, and
when you are in fear, you are not connecting spiritually with love. You either resonate fear or love but cannot resonate both
at the same time. But, you can learn to
resonate at a higher level of love pushing
fear away.
Spiritual holistic life coaching can hold
your hand, help you to find your repressed
feelings that you dont even know are there,
help you to heal and find the real you. You
can learn to open your heart to not only
give unconditional love, but receive it. You
can find that your own happiness is not
dependent on someone or something else,
but has been inside of you all along. Learn
to connect with your God/higher power
center and know that you are never alone
because God/your higher power is always
within you. Learn to let go of the fear.
You can learn to self-master your life so
that your life is spiritually driven instead of
letting your ego mind become your master.
When you learn to self-master your life so

your ego becomes your servant, only then

will you realize that the self that you are
searching for will be found within you.
You can learn to self-master yourself with
self-mastery disciplines. These disciplines
include prayer, feeling your healing feelings, self-parenting visualizations, spiritual
distinction meditation and dis-creation.
When you practice these disciplines, you
will reap benefits of a self-mastered life.

The intentions for these

disciplines are:

Prayer When you are willing and

conscious of surrendering to your higher
powers with prayer, your spirit can coordinate with the universe to put everything
into order to help you consciously create
the life you want.
Feeling your healing feelings Once
you have learned the language of feelings,
your intuitive self can communicate to you.
Self-parenting visualizations Using
Self-parenting visualizations will help you to
get your emotional dependency needs met
that were not met when you were a child.
Spiritual distinction meditation This
is a key part to your self-parenting and
helps you to tell the difference between
your ego mind and your spirit so that you
can train your mind to obey your spirit.
Dis-creation In this two-step process
you will delete your old negative programing and create new positive programs.

Are you ready to do some heart work? You

do not have to do it alone. Finding the right
coach who is compassionate, understanding,
and has all the tools to help you get through
it, can help you to find the real you, and help
you to live the life you dream of living as you
learn to self-parent yourself.

For the love

of
a dog

By Kris Leaver

hose who have loved and lost a special pet know the heartache and grief when they pass. Why am I hurting so much?
you may ask. Moira Anderson Allen, M.Ed, has written a
pamphlet called Ten Tips on Coping with the Loss of Your Pet. In it,
she answers some poignant questions and suggests ways to express
feelings and memories in poems, stories or letters to your pet. The
following is an excerpt from my husbands Tribute to our Rudi:
She was born somewhere within Dodge County, orphaned at a
young age and living on the concrete floor of some basement in
a home near Hustisford, WI. Friends of Animals advertised her
for sale, and to acquire her we paid $17. She was of no particular
pedigree that we could tell. The local veterinarian said her parents
were probably Doberman and German Shepherd. She was, to us,
simply a mutt. We named her Rudabella or Rudi for short.
Rudi loved sharing the couch with her Momma, often turning
on her back to better extend her paws to be rubbed. We often teased
her that her paws smelled like Fritos. It was a ritual for Rudi to know
when her Momma was coming home from school. If Momma was
late, there would be some whining, but eventual glee with her arrival.
Then the ritual would be to grab her squeaky toys, lie on her back, feet
up in the air, squeaking away to celebrate Mommas return.
When Tyson, our daughters Doberman would visit, Rudi reluctantly accepted him. At first, there was some snarling and showing
of the teeth. Eventually when Tysons presence became permanent,
the snarling and all such episodes faded away, and Rudi and Tyson
became best friends. We would often visit the area dog park. Tyson
ran laps and went nuts over birds, but Rudi would just meander
with a distinct smile as to say thanks, this is the day the Lord has
made. We feel Rudi was a gift from God and showed us so many of
His qualities. She was faithful, loyal, trustworthy, showing unconditional love as a companion, a solace in difficult times.
Rudi was born around October 1994. She had lived well past
her expected date to leave us. Now her nights were fraught with
16

Natures Pathways | February 2015

restlessness, and all signs indicated she was in increasing pain.

Four days before Rudi died, she was given a tranquilizer to help
her sleep at night. That almost did her in. We took her to the vet
and IVs were used to clean the sedation from her system. An overnight at the vets and we picked her up the next morning. Rudi was
so happy to see us. A ride home and she could hardly wait to have
the door of the van open. She was happy to be home!
Up until the end, Rudi did what she thought would please us.
On her last day she went out to do her thing, even though she
could hardly walk anymore. Her last meal consisted of chicken,
ice cream, scrambled eggs and beer. While she did not want to
eat much at the end, we believed that she did it just for us. Rudi
died Tuesday, July 28, 2009 in the arms of her two faithful pack
members. She was nearly 15 years old.
For people who have never loved a dog, this makes no sense. If
you have loved a dog as we loved our Rudi, this is the way to deal
with the grief and the hole that she left within our hearts and our
home where we used to see her. The Scriptures only give us clues
about the eternal resting place for our Rudi. But we believe she
is enjoying all that heaven offers, lying on her back upside down
with squeaky toys, catching Frisbees in midair, and maybe enjoying a little beer now and then.
Rudi, we love you and we miss you, as we often told you in your
last months and days of your life, you were simply the best!

Kayaking:
A metaphor
for peace
and
healing

By Kristie Konsoer

reast cancer survivors dont understand the word no.

Weve heard it too many times. The cold gray sky said
to stay inside. A steady mist fell. It definitely was not the
warm, sunny, end of July day everyone expected while at our
retreat. It was, however, our kayaking day on Lake Superior. The
weather would not stop us instead it would make us stronger.
Everyone agreed to go. Each of us had faced cancer and screamed
No! at it with all our might. A little rain would not interfere with
our plans.
Kayaking was a structured activity and part of our learning to
be a part of nature to do something physical, something spiritual, to listen to the water and to listen to ourselves. Kayaking
encompasses all of these and more.
Lake Superior is a place of story and spirit, along with the
islands that make up the Apostle Islands. Our guide took us to a
beautiful inlet on Madeline Island that eventually led out to the
much larger lake. The tranquility was beautiful even on a rainy
cold day. The inlet protected us from strong wind and rocking
waves. Each of us was about to write more of our own personal
cancer story upon the Lake Superior water.
A steady stillness surrounds you when youre in your kayak and
on the water. The oar slices through the water silently and your
kayak soundlessly skims across the water. You are submerged but
not submerged - on the surface but not on the surface. A kayak puts
you in the moment more than any other activity I can imagine.
There is a peaceful oneness with the water. The rhythm of
paddling along with the inhaling and exhaling of all that fresh air
creates a kind of meditative state.
Kayaking changes perspective. You see everything from the
middle, not from the shore. You have control over where your kayak
ventures to and at what pace. There is empowerment in a kayak.
Kayaking heals. Cancer, surgeries, treatments and medications
had taken their toll on our bodies and our spirits. Fear creeps in.
www.naturespathways.com

It can settle in and eat away at your hope. Yet, water has its own
purification and renewal powers. Water replaces fear with hope
and life. Water trickled down from the oar and onto your legs.
The mist coming down, sideways, from every direction cleansed
spirits. Kayaking connected the healing aspects of physical,
emotional and spiritual together. Every stroke made me feel more
powerful and farther away from cancer.
When there is a storm, kayakers are supposed to raft up to
come together and hold on to the ropes of each others kayaks and
ride out the storm. You dont try to paddle anywhere. You just stay
together. The point is to make yourself bigger for large boats to see
you and to rescue you. However, theres another point, too. In lifes
struggles, dont you want to raft up so you can help one another
through the storms? You do. The concrete becomes another part
of the metaphor.
After about an hour, our group came together to assess our
progress and make decisions. One kayak was filling up with water
and in constant need of the hand pump. The mist had changed
into rain. We headed back in silence to reflect on our experience.
Kayaking proved to me once again I could conquer my fears.
Not just conquer, but actually excel in this new experience. Every
inch of me was soaked, yet I felt fantastic! I was stronger both
inside and out.
Once out of the water I started to shiver. Yet I knew this was not
the toughest part of my retreat. The toughest part for me was earlier
that morning as I took an emotional risk when I shared scary parts
of my cancer story with my fellow retreatants, most people of whom
I had known for a couple days, who are now friends.
I will paddle on in the warmth and sunshine. I may paddle
again in the cold and rain. I can do anything. I am a survivor.

Childrens
Dental Health
Month

By Amy Sergeant, D.D.S.

ebruary is Childrens Dental Health

Month. Help your children enjoy the
dentist by discussing proper dental
care and having them perform fun dentalrelated activities. Here are some fun dental
facts to share with the entire family as well
as some dental craft ideas to help involve
your children in their dental care.

Did you know:

Tooth decay is the second most

common disease in the United States,

next to the
common cold.
If you dont floss,

you miss cleaning 40 percent of your tooth surfaces.

We buy 14 million gallons of toothpaste every year!
An average American will use 14
inches of dental floss every year.
An average American spends 38.5 total
days brushing teeth over a lifetime.
According to the Academy of General

Dentistry, the average person only

brushes for 45 to 70 seconds a day.
The recommended amount of time is
two to three minutes.
More than 300 types of bacteria make
up dental plaque.
The hardest tissue in the body is the
enamel covering our teeth.

Teeth are made out of calcium, mineral salts and phosphorus.

The soreness you feel when you burn your mouth on mozza-

rella cheese has a name pizza palate.

Say cheese! The calcium and phosphorous found in cheese is

healthy for your teeth. It reduces the pH level in plaque and

re-mineralizes the enamel.
If youre right handed, you will chew your food on your right
side and vice versa.
In 200 AD, the Romans used a mixture of bones, eggshells,
oyster shells and honey to clean their teeth. In the middle
ages, people believed that dogs teeth boiled in wine made an
excellent mouth rinse for tooth decay prevention.
The average human produces 25,000 quarts of saliva in a lifetime enough to fill two swimming pools.
An elephants tooth can weigh over 6 pounds and measures
one foot across.
Dogs have 42 teeth, cats have 30 teeth, pigs have 44 teeth,
snails have over 25,000, and an armadillo has 104 teeth.
Just like finger prints, tooth prints are unique to each
individual.
A tooth that has been knocked out starts to die within 15
minutes, but survives longer if placed in milk or in your
mouth.
Replace your toothbrush after the flu, cold or other viral
infections to prevent re-infection.
There are 10-12 teaspoons of sugar in a single can of soda.
More than 51 million hours of school are lost each year by
children due to dental-related illness.
An average person has 32 teeth. That number includes 4
wisdom teeth. We have 8 incisors, 4 canines, 12 molars and 8
pre-molars.

Try these simple but fun crafts with your little ones:

Make a smile.
Draw an open mouth shape on paper, outline the mouth with

pink glue (gums), and stick white beans onto the glue (teeth).

white paper strip to make teeth. Glue one tooth at a time in
the center of the lips, and you have a nice smiling face.
Make a collage using pictures of mouths cut out of magazines.

Self-love and
the healthy
ripple
effect

By Emily Niesen

ven if Valentines Day is just a Hallmark holiday or you lack

a date on February 14, the month of February is a great
time to reevaluate self-care and self-love. No matter what
your status or point of view of the holiday is, we all could use a
little improvement in this area. Lets explore some fun and healthy
ways to do this. I think youll be surprised about what a little selflove will do to your overall well-being.

Reflect and forecast

For this activity you will need a pen and piece of paper. Make
three columns. In the first column, list all of your accomplishments of 2014 and thus far in 2015. Write them down, no matter
how small. If you struggle with this, take it one month at a time.
Look back at your calendar and emails. Still struggling? Try to
look at it through someone elses eyes. Someone that is not so
judgmental. In the second column, write a to-do list for the rest
of the year. To help narrow it down, take a moment and think of
two to three people in your life who depend on you and/or you

& Well-Being

consider a close friend. What do you want to do this year that

makes you a better person for them? For yourself? Turn those
wants into intentions and write them down on your list. Dont
make this more difficult than it is; the first three people that pop
into your head are most likely the people to consider for this exercise. The first items that come to your mind for who you want to
be or what you want to do should go down on paper as intentions.
Narrow these intentions down to manageable tasks. For example,
be a loving wife is a huge, overwhelming task. However, if you
break it down into action items like, make husbands favorite
meal once a week and schedule an out of town weekend getaway
in the spring, these items are now goals that can be accomplished
and with excitement. In the third column, write down everything
youre doing right now or that you have to do this year that you
no longer want to do, regardless of whether or not its practical to
let go of right now or the fear of letting someone down. What do
you want to stop doing? For each item, write a plan for how you
will stop doing it or not do it ever. Be patient, some items might be
easy to cross off; others might take some time and thought to plan
your just say no attack. Give yourself permission to not need a
reason. Keep this list somewhere where you can look and edit it
as often as needed.

ts so easy to get caught up in negative assumptions and

conversations. Make an effort not to make assumptions of
others and situations. Escape from negativity when you can.
There are so many positive actions you can take instead.
An optimistic attitude works wonders. Happy people have more
energy to do meaningful and helpful things for themselves and
others. Be mindful in everyday activities. Play and laugh. Thank
those that help you and be grateful for the little things.
Healthy, happy people take care of themselves. They are smarter
about what they eat, how they exercise and when they need to
rest. Its OK to slow down once in a while and just observe.
Its important to perhaps make a did list of what was accomplished rather than always focusing on what it is we need to do. Prioritize your needs from your wants. Simplify instead of making things
so complicated when its not necessary. Reserve time for yourself to
be yourself and really enjoy life, people and all the world has to offer.
Lets make a commitment to be good to ourselves by choosing
to have a more positive attitude. We will be stronger, live longer

The music of
what happens:
Going with the
flow to capture
the
luck of the Irish

By Cecilia Farran

great diaspora is dated to 2500 BC, more or less, as a

wave of exuberant people swept westward across Europe
and eventually the British Isles. We call them the Celts.
They were recklessly in love with the powers of life and death and
intoxicated with an energy greater than themselves. Skilled in art,
they rejoice in the beautiful and symbolize their cosmic beliefs in
twinning zoomorphic designs.
Their wisdom and cosmology comes down to us today carried
worldwide on a second diaspora fueled by the Irish Great Hunger
in the mid-nineteenth century. Their exuberant passion for life is
called the luck of the Irish. Worldwide the annual ritual of St.
Patricks Day on March 17 calls souls yearning to capture, through
revelry, that illusive and delightful consciousness that produces
the luck of the Irish.

The luck of the Irish

An ancient Irish legend from the Celtic Fenian myth cycle tells of Finn
McCool (yes, that is actually his name) and his band of hearty men.
Finn and his men are discussing what each considers to be the
most beautiful sound in the world. Some believe it is the ring of a
strong sword on a shield, the belling of the stag in the forest, the

whispering of a lovers bliss. They ask Finn And you chief, what
do you think? Ah, answers Finn, the music of what happens.
That is the finest sound of all.

The music of what happens

Ah yes. The music of what happens. Living in the moment with

the flow of time. Let us look at what that entails.
ALL IS ONE

Connected by a conscious spirit that inhabits all things, all matter

is united and flows as one being possessing infinite aspects of
consciousness.
SHAPE CHANGING

With one consciousness, all forms of being become interchangeable.

Capable of accessing the oneness and thus being able to shape shift
from one physical form to another, a being can take on the attributes
of the consciousness appropriate to that form. Celtic lore is filled with
the stories of shape changers. It is said that St. Patrick himself, invoking the prayer known as The Deers Cry transformed himself and his
band of men into a herd of deer, thus escaping the pursuit of an enemy.

DUALITY IS AN ILLUSION

The Celts shun a belief in duality for it introduces judgment,

which introduces the concept of more than and less than. A belief
that begins to tamper with the concept and flow of oneness in all.
TIME IS FLUID AND CIRCULAR

To the ancients, time was marked by the movement of the

heavens cyclical and fluid. Even today the Irish are a people
of a natural flow, seeming to know how to work with time, place
and situation; partnering with these forces, allowing them to be,
rather than attempting to use or harness them. It is the magic
that one feels on a trip to Ireland, the luck of the Irish as events
evolve and all fall together at precisely the right time and place.
CREATIVE HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS

A glorious creative center lies within each of us; a belief in the

immense creative power of the human consciousness to go out
from itself and enter the nature of things.
From this springs the Irish love of riddle, the symbology of
words, a nimble shape shifting of the mind. Theirs is a psychic

benefit me!) This is a way to cleanse your mind and body. No

Did you know you can cleanse your relationships and career
as well? Creating more positive relationships and crowding out
those that dont support our desires often make us healthier than
any expensive food detox, green-juice program out there. Having
high-quality relationships help to upgrade our lives. The kale chips
and quinoa might have a greater effect if we clean up our relationships or find friends who truly care about us. The same goes for
our careers. More than half of our waking hours are spent working.
It is a huge part of our lives, yet how many of you complain every
day about your job? How many of you blame weight gain on long
days sitting at your desk, stress-eating and picking up fast food for
dinner due to lack of time for a homemade meal? Today, society
does allow you to find the work you love and to love the work you
find. Dont believe me? Start making a list of everything you do
or would like to do during free time. Ask yourself which of those
activities you would spend eight hours doing daily.
You see, February isnt just for Cupid and the romantics out
there. The exercises in this article are meant to help kick start

Needleless
acupuncture
for
kids

By Kathryn Coppola

eedle-less acupuncture might seem like an oxymoron

at first glance. How can you do acupuncture without
needles? Easy. Let me explain a bit of background on the
technique called Shonishin without needles, used for kids.
Shonishin is a Japanese word sho means little, ni means children and shin means needle. It is a highly refined therapy specifically used for infants and children to strengthen their respiratory,
digestive and immune systems. Kids have a lot of vital energy, are
continually growing, learning and developing. This means that
they dont need a lot of stimulation at acupuncture points and
channels in order to receive the benefit.
A typical Shonishin treatment involves gentle stimulation
from rubbing, pressing or tapping of various acupuncture points
with special copper and stainless steel tools. Most children enjoy
coming in for treatment, and find the session relaxing and play
like. Parents are often able to hold their child during the treatment;
however, most children enjoy playing and squirming around.
When it comes to treating kids, it might not look like a lot is happening; however, since their systems change so quickly, less is often more.
Treatments usually take only 5-15 minutes of actual treatment time.

Common conditions treated by

Shonishin include:
Coughs
Asthma
Allergies
Eczema
Colic
Fever
Constipation
Diarrhea
Bedwetting
Sleep disorders
Hyperactivity
Recurrent infections
Symptoms from vaccinations

Shonishin treatments work best when provided preventatively

or at the first sign of symptoms. Chronic conditions also greatly
benefit from Shonishin treatments; however, they might require
more frequent sessions. Shonishin treatments are a safe, effective, noninvasive way to boost your childs immune system and
strengthen his or her overall constitution.
While winters flus and colds are still being passed around the
classroom and before springs allergies appear, bring your child
in to strengthen his or her bodys own healing mechanisms. Give
your child a step up when it comes to naturally fighting the viruses
going around with needleless acupuncture.

Timely
prod

By Don Neviaser

ou may not have a choice as to when or how you die, but

you can decide daily the way in which you live, a truth that
is never more apparent or fully appreciated than when
death is imminent. But in a sense, isnt death always imminent?
Arent we all, in essence, terminally ill infected by biological
processes that will eventually diminish and end our life through
the inescapable passage of time? Not to mention the potential for
premature death.
Yet it is because of the variable time that you have the privilege, opportunity and power to choose how you will live each day
and hence directly affect the quality of the time you do have! You
can decide daily what path you will walk into the future, and ultimately the memories you will have to look back on.
The only final destination in life is death; it is the quality of
the journey there that is life. When death draws nigh, it is only
through the caliber of your memories and the level of contentment, forgiveness and peace in your heart that you will know
whether your trip was a success.
So stop putting off all your unfulfilled intentions! There are no
second chances to enjoy the gift of life, and each day gone, is gone
for good. There really is no better time than the present to take
action, and only you can make your dreams happen inch by
inch, moment by moment, if need be. Every new day is a fresh
opportunity to start anew and decide whether you are going to
truly live and enjoy your life, discover all your potential, or simply
lose it all to time and inaction!
If you feel resistant to what I put forth here, or if it awakens
something meaningful deep within you, I would like you to seriously consider a few questions: Wouldnt you honestly prefer to
live and die with a fulfilled, happy heart and spirit, rather than
only being able to look back and wonder what might have been
or why you wasted so much time worrying instead of acting? In
fact, how does your true heart really want to be able to look back
at your one and only shot at life?
Doesnt the possibility that you may end up wallowing in
www.naturespathways.com

self-disappointment, desperately longing for one more chance

to do something differently or take a mulligan on some decision that left you empty, bother you? What about all the people
you may have met and enjoyed, all the friends, lovers and
experiences?
The question you really need to ask yourself is whether you are
truly comfortable with the possibility of wasting such an incredible gift that is life. If you are not, then what are you going to
do to prevent that from happening and when are you going to
begin? Today? Maybe right now? Hey, its your life and totally your
call. Live it or lose it! Oh, and dont forget to be an organ donor
because this end of which I speak may well visit you sooner than
you ever imagined. What? Im just sayin

Aquarius Equal,
different and a
team player
Dates: Jan. 22 Feb. 21
Ruled by: Uranus
Element: Air

By Barry Kerr

New Moon chart, Feb. 8, 5:46 pm

hough true for everyone, the following information will

feel more relevant to you if your sun, north node, Chiron
and/or a group of other planets are in Aquarius on your
birth chart.

What is Aquariuss intention?

Last month, Capricorn invited us to step boldly into the world

and manifest our visions. Now, Aquarius is here to show us this is
always a team effort. Uranus, ruler of freedom and individuality,
prompts our intuitive awareness toward seeing ourselves objectively, as part of a greater organism of humanity. Oh, Aquarius!
What now?
Our inner Aquarius/Uranus knows, intuitively, that the authority of the status quo is temporary to the understandings of our

limited senses, changing as consciousness evolves. Thus, we

strive for the ideal, often feeling rejected or weary when the
world doesnt get it. We know, in our hearts, that we are all in
this together, as equals. Aquariuss spiritual intention is to teach
us how to remain true to our unique vision while blending in with
others, collectively.
Through Aquarius, we learn objectivity, equality, group participation and serving humanitarian causes. We learn to relate to
others as whole individuals, not just their functions, recognizing
them as special, just like us. We learn to share our intuitive and
unconventional ideas with others and encourage them to do the
same. This further taming of our ego creates friendships, camaraderie and belonging. We begin to experience the oneness of
humanity as an extension of self.

Our unconscious Aquarius, in a misguided attempt to feel the

belonging, may yield too quickly to peer pressure, thus losing
individual will, waiting for others to prompt our decisions and
actions. Or in fear of belonging, we may run away from confrontations, detach from emotional situations, aloof and waiting
endlessly for more information.

What needs healing and growth?

Our Aquarius ego can often feel like an outsider, estranged by

the rest of humanity, feeling very different, like something is
wrong with us, with no place in the world. For comfort, we might
purposefully try to stand apart by being contrary, eccentric or
rebellious, thus feeling in control of our aloneness. Yet our innate
drive for connection keeps us trying to belong. Instead of real,
intimate friendships, humanitarian causes or technological webs
might dominate our social life.
From this position as outsider, we are forced to look at the world
more objectively, to discover why we feel alienated, and eventually
see a much bigger picture of our place in the world. Our intuition
informs us of how the outer world reflects the complexity of our
inner being and we gradually feel more integrated and connected
to others and to the whole. Eventually, the synergy of human spirit
feels like home.

What can I do this month?

To heal and evolve your Aquarian self, pay attention to how well
you do in groups. Do you strive to understand the group, or do
you insist on getting your own way? Can you follow your own
heart and still work with a team, or do you do whats expected in
order to feel you belong? Do you treat others as whole and special
or do you only see them as serving a particular function? Do you
honor your intuition? Are you open to creating win/win situations? In a world that falls short of your ideals, can you still feel
your loving connection to humanity and know you have a place?

Additional support (current planetary transits)

Mercury will be retrograde (backward) in Aquarius from Jan. 21

to Feb. 12. This will keep your mind focused on group endeavors
and innovative changes in your life. Meanwhile, Venus and Mars
advance into Pisces, bringing soulfulness to your relationships and
desires. In late February, as Venus and Mars merge on the cusp of
Pisces/Aries, romantic passion could evolve into mystical bliss.
The new moon is on Feb. 18. The moon and sun, joined right on
the cusp of Pisces, and nearby Neptune, will call to your spiritual
heart your longing for divine oneness. With Saturn squaring
(90 degrees) this in Sagittarius, this longing may seem to conflict
with your duty to reality, but you will know otherwise. Under this
new moon, set your intention by the next full moon to experience
the reality of the oneness of your soul with another. Venus and
Mars will certainly be doing their part.

Rediscovering the
natural beauty of
wood with sustainable,
nontoxic, zero-VOC
natural waxed finishes
.....................................................
By Jonas A. Zahn

This is one of a four-part series on natural,

nontoxic, eco-friendly wood finishes. Look
for the next installment in next months
issue, at www.naturespathways.com or

n the process of building a sustainable and eco-friendly casket company,

weve had to learn a lot about ecofriendly wood finishes. Weve learned how
to achieve a wide variety of beautiful wood
finishes without using harmful chemicals.
Most of our learning has been a matter
of rediscovering the historic techniques
mastered by 16th century English craftsmen. In this article well briefly cover the
history, chemistry and useful techniques
for achieving natural waxed finishes.
Waxes have been used for centuries to
seal and protect wood surfaces. Waxes are
effective sealers and provide durable and
protective coating. Conventional manufacturing has shifted to varnishes and polyurethane finishes that can be applied with
spray techniques, whereas wax finishes

require some elbow grease and patience
to get comfortable with the technique. In
general, waxes must first be applied in a
circular motion with an applicator pad,
cloth, brush or sponge. Within a minute or
two, wipe the wax in the same direction as
the wood grain. And finally, buff the wax
to a shine once the wax has begun to cure
or dry.
Buffing a wax finish takes some getting
used to. You can buff waxed wood surfaces
with a soft lint-free cotton cloth, a polyester
auto-buffing cloth or even an old polyester
T-shirt or slacks. I prefer polyester because
it is mildly abrasive and not absorbent. The
trick is in the timing and pressure. Buff too
soon and you will smear the wax around.

Wait too long and the wax will be too hard

to buff to a nice shine. Buff lightly with the
same pressure youd pet your cat or dog.
Let the rag do the work. The more expert
you get at applying the wax, the longer you
will be comfortable waiting to buff some
experts wait hours to buff after application.
Multiple coats can be applied to build up a
thick protective finish.
My favorite wax is clear carnauba wax.
Carnauba wax is made by pressing the
leaves of a palm tree. This wax is what is
used to make M&Ms chocolate candy
shells, lipstick and automotive polish. It is
available in bars, flakes and paste. The bars
and flakes are either pure or blended with
beeswax. The paste form maintains the

classified as either a low-volatile organic

compound (VOC) or VOC product. Once

applied and the solvent has evaporated, the
finished wood is 100 percent free of VOCs
(important for making childrens toys or
furniture). You can make your own wax
paste with carnauba wax flakes and orange
oil solvent or lemon juice.
There is a newly patented wax product
produced exclusively by the Real Milk
Paint Company. This wax is a proprietary
blend of walnut oil, carnauba wax and
beeswax. They offer two colors: Warm
Black and Chestnut Brown. These ingredients polymerize with exposure to the air
to form a tight-sealing, almost plastic-like
surface. Water will bead up on this surface

cloth in ultra-thin coats and let dry 24
hours. Then buff lightly with steel wool for
a very smooth, shiny surface. Apply multiple coats to your liking.
All of these topcoat finishes can be
layered for added protection, but not in
any order. Finishes that require a porous
surface must be applied first before others
that seal the surface. For example, we often
use milk paint, then tung oil, then wax. Wax

A CARBON-NEGATIVE COMMITMENT

10 MILLION TREES
Northwoods Casket Company owner Jonas Zahn
promises sustainability to future generations
By Rebecca Bentz

THE AVERAGE PERSON takes more than

600 million breaths in his or her lifetime. Those
600 million will soon be a little easier, thanks to
Jonas Zahn, who is pledging his own impressive number: 10 million trees.
Zahn is founder of Northwoods Casket
Company, a Beaver Dam-based business
that creates sustainable caskets from locally
sourced and environmentally friendly materials. For each casket Northwoods crafts, Zahn
has pledged to plant 100 trees. That means
the company will need to craft 100,000
caskets to achieve the 10 million tree mark.
This is no lofty aspiration; for Zahn, it is a
very real, personal mission.
Our commitment to plant 10 million trees
is much more than a goal. It is a commitment, a promise. It is a promise I have made
to my children and the state of Wisconsin,
he explains. I have every bit of confidence
that we will achieve this.
His pledge echoes through his and
his companys actions: Zahn is drafting a
30

Natures Pathways | February 2015

memorandum of understanding in relation

to his tree-planting goal that he will share
with the Wisconsin Department of Natural
Resources and the state legislature.
All 10 million trees will be planted in
accordance with the Wisconsin Department
of Natural Resources Urban Forestry initiative. (An urban forest is all of the trees and
other vegetation in and around a community essentially, the plant life found in the
locations where the majority of Wisconsins population lives, works and makes its
carbon footprint.) This means Northwoods
isnt seeding row upon row of plantation
pines; its working to replenish the specific
native tree species the state DNR has identified as needed to create a diverse tree
population. Diversified forests mean less of
a chance that large numbers of trees will die
from unexpected diseases and pests.
These efforts are already being recognized. Last year, Zahn and Northwoods Casket
Company received an Innovations in Urban

FAST FOREST FACTS

Wisconsin is home to 85 native
tree species.
The state boasts 184 Tree Cities
USA; thats the third-highest
ranking in the nation!
Did you know that the trees found
in your town or community can
provide economic benefits? The
Wisconsin DNR estimates that
well-managed urban forests
pay back nearly three times the
cost to plant and maintain them.
The benefits include improved
air quality, increased real estate
values, water runoff mitigation
and energy savings.
Wisconsins urban areas (towns,
cities and other communities)
contain an estimated 27 million
trees.

Forestry award from the DNR, which lauded

the creation of Zahns unique tree-planting and
reforestation project.

THE ROOTS
Zahn hasnt always been in the casket-crafting
business. He studied civil and environmental
engineering in college and afterward became
what he characterizes as a serial entrepreneur. He worked in high-tech startup companies for the past 20 years, including one
recently acquired by IBM.
Zahn eventually craved a new direction in
his career one outside of high-tech, one
not focused on technology. He chose casketmaking specifically for this reason, as well as
the challenge of breaking into the surprisingly
monopoly-dominated industry.
While the careful craftsmanship of Northwoods caskets is dear to Zahn, the green
and sustainable messaging [and] building a
social entrepreneurial-focused company is
something thats a personal passion of mine.
It brings me great joy to write out paychecks
to people who really are committed to what
we do and how we do it. We dont have to
build this business on the backs of labor, he
explains. Im doing this to prove that we can
build a sustainable business: one that isnt

focused on profits, but focused on creating

good work for good people here in Wisconsin and doing something right by the environment. We can do that and make money.
Zahn explains that as a craft business
rather than a manufacturer, Northwoods
Casket Company is able to keep sustainability and eco-friendliness at the core of
its business. Rather than mass production,
Northwoods focus is always on quality and
environmental stewardship.

A BLOSSOMING MISSION
I get teased, mostly by my dad, that were a
tree-planting company and we craft caskets to
fund such operations which is partially true.
Zahn is on a mission to leave the earth
better than when he arrived. For him,
carbon-neutral isnt good enough: He
aspired to make Northwoods a carbonnegative company meaning the business
removes more carbon dioxide from the planets atmosphere than it adds.
Zahns already able to cross this goal off
his to-do list.
We are a truly carbon-negative company
probably by a factor of 10x already. And
we are a profitable company, and we are
growing, he says.

The 100 tree seedlings planted per casket

offset Northwoods carbon footprint in just
one year. And those trees continue to give
for many years after that, Zahn explains.
Zahn and the other individuals who make
up Northwoods Casket Company are truly
living and breathing their passion for locally
grown sustainability and environmentalism.
And theyll be doing so for millions more trees.
Businesses dont exist to make money.
Thats like saying we exist to breathe: No.
We make money to exist, like we breathe to
exist, Zahn says. The reason why we exist
is so I can plant 10 million trees for the next
generation and the generation after that.

PLANT IT FORWARD
Pledge to include a casket or cremation
urn made by Northwoods Casket Company
as part of your end-of-life plan and theyll
plant 100 trees in Wisconsin next spring or
fall through their Plant it Forward campaign.
Is sustainability and providing for future
generations important to you? Feel great
about planning responsibly and seeing the
environment grow for future generations.

A SUSTAINABLE LIFE

More about Northwoods Casket Company

Where you are laid to rest at the end of
your journey in this life can have a definite
impact on the environment.
The construction of a typical steel casket
adds approximately 2,000 pounds of
carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Hardwood casket construction is a little better,
at 1,600-1,700 pounds. That equates to
approximately six to 10 days of the average
family households carbon footprint, Northwoods Casket Company owner Jonas Zahn
explains.
Zahns company crafts affordable,
sustainable burial caskets for individuals
who want to make one of their final decisions in life an environmentally-conscious
one. Depending on the product, crafting a
Northwoods casket adds 50 to 200 pounds
of carbon dioxide to the air a tenth the
typical amount.
Very, very important to me and core to
our business is sustainability, eco-friendliness [and] nontoxic products. So, green
in every way that you can measure: from
www.naturespathways.com

local sourcing of woods to air drying our

woods. All of our finishes are 100 percent
nontoxic, 100 percent [volatile organic
compound]-free.
Northwoods 30 different products are
actively represented in a third of Wisconsins 600 funeral homes; however, individuals may request a Northwoods casket
through any funeral home in the state and
receive it with same- or next-day shipping.
The company also sells through funeral
homes in some neighboring states and
through third-party carriers to far-flung
corners of the country.
The company offers many styles in a
wide range of prices, with something for
every family. Northwoods crafted caskets
are suitable for burial or cremation and can
even be customized.
But perhaps the best part of purchasing a
Northwoods Casket is knowing that youve
made an environmentally conscious decision and have left 100 Wisconsin trees as
part of your legacy.

s 2015 shaping up to be your best year ever? Do you have

certain people that contribute to your life getting back on
track or who make your life amazing? Have you been in
contact with people who bring a warm glow to your heart over
the holiday season? I recently traveled to Australia, and connected
with people who I have not seen for 10-20 years. I am amazed
and comforted by these connections and curious about how these
friends and family members have shaped my life.
Connections old and new are a powerful force in our lives and
can be taken for granted. It is my intention in 2015 to be grateful and proactive for the incredible connections in my life. My
intention is to feel blessed, supported, encouraged and inspired by
new and lifelong connections. This may seem like a simple intention or goal, and it is! Like many things in life, we know intellectually what to do and how to do it yet there is a disconnect with
having knowledge and converting it into action! If we have some
sort of accountability and plan, the likelihood of making any sort of
change is so much higher!
Here is an acronym I use to turn knowledge and intentions into

God Bless

action. APPS! Here is what my intention to connect with people

in 2015 would look like:
ACCOUNTABILITY. My husband will keep me accountable by

checking in with me at the end of each week.

PROGRAM. I will connect over the Internet or in person with

five people every week. I want to start this program on the 1st of
January 2015.

PRACTICALITY. Although five seems like an awesome number,

I know that with my hectic schedule, this may not be practical. I

know that three is a lot more likely and a more achievable number
to start with. I also recognize that the 1st may be unlikely as I will
have been traveling, so the 12th of January will have a higher rate
of success than the 1st!
SUPPORT. I will get my friend Carrie to support me by sending

a text message to me on Thursdays, as a reminder of my intention

to connect with 3 people per week.
After writing this brief plan and letting my accountability and support
people know my intentions, I feel confident this new habit will become
a regular part of my life. What are some intentions or goals you would
like to achieve in 2015? Who are people in your life that you trust,
respect and know will support you in your endeavors of change? How
will you feel when you reach your goals? I wish you all the support and
encouragement in the world. May 2015 be the year that you embrace
change and become the person you dream of being.

What is
hyperbaric
oxygen
therapy?

By Kendall Riggs

yperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is gaining more and

more recognition for its wide array of physiological benefits, which have been demonstrated through cutting-edge
research and clinical trials. All over the world, individuals of all
walks and ages have reported increased quality of life from receiving HBOT in conjunction with other therapies that relate to specific
conditions. Hundreds of published studies have shown a measured
amelioration for a substantial amount of medical indications and
new research continues to provide efficacy.
For cancer patients, cancer thrives in low-oxygen environments and HBOT has been shown to increase the oxygen levels
to cancerous areas to help decrease tumor volume and aggressiveness. Currently, physicians are using HBOT as an adjunct therapy
to enhance other cancer therapies such as chemotherapy and radiation. The Food and Drug Administration recognizes HBOT as a
means of decreasing the damage to the skin and bone from being
irradiated, which has helped a substantial amount of individuals.
With respect to stroke patients, neurons surrounding the site of
the injury can remain dormant due to lack of oxygen and blood
flow. HBOT has been shown to provide the brain with more
oxygen to decrease the inflammation at the site of the injury, and
revitalize dormant brain cells to enhance recovery and promote
the repair process. This evidence transcended to children affected
with cerebral palsy as new evidence verified HBOTs therapeutic
role in increasing gross and fine motor function.
As more research concerning HBOT for increased brain activity
has been published, a substantial number of professional athletes are
using portable home chambers to promote enhanced recovery from
intensive training and their respected contests. Over 450 NFL players
alone are currently using hyperbaric therapy to help curtail the
damage caused by head injuries players frequently suffer from. Additionally, reports from medical staff have claimed marked improvements in brain scans compared to players that dont utilize HBOT.
There are several other indications that HBOT has been shown
to help, including Parkinsons disease, diabetes, heart disease,
www.naturespathways.com

oxidative stress, chronic fatigue, post-traumatic stress disorder,

arthritis, multiple sclerosis and more. With inflammation being
the hallmark of most indications, oxygens natural and powerful
anti-inflammatory effects transcend to a wide range of conditions
and helps serve as one of the primary reasons for HBOTs increasing influence within the medical community.
With the increasing number of individuals desiring HBOT,
even just for general health, more clinics around the world are
implementing chambers. Currently, there is a hyperbaric clinic
in Madison that treats patients of all ages to which patients have
experienced symptomatic relief to some degree.
The Wisconsin Integrative Hyperbaric Center is offering 10 free
sessions to qualifying individuals within the month of February.
This opportunity is to provide individuals with the chance to experience HBOT for themselves and experience what so many people
are talking about. All individuals are required to have a prescription
from their physician before any treatments can be administered.
For more information, call the Wisconsin Integrative Hyperbaric Center at

Fevrier:
Le mois
de
lamour

By Kathy Bryant

ith February being la mois de

lamour (the month of love),
its a good time for anyone,
single or spoken for, to work on healing
the issues of the heart. So, while you and
your sweetie may be getting ready for the
special date come the 14th, prepare your
heart even more by clearing the clutter
that may have accumulated over the past
year or longer.

Single? Even better. Treat yourself to

some special me time and get rid of those
blasted blues this time of year may exacerbate. First, lets find out why the heart is so
important besides that it pumps blood
to every organ of our body.
Anahata, the heart chakra, is Sanskrit
for unhurt, unstruck, unbeaten. It is the
non-physical sound that vibrates without
beginning or end. The heart chakra is the

meeting place for the upper and lower

chakras assimilating and healing those
energies and allowing them to flow freely
through the body.
When the heart chakra is in balance, we
are quick to forgive, demonstrate compassion, unconditional love and trust among
other positive actions. Our relationships
are fulfilling, we trust implicitly though
selectively, we believe in something greater

than ourselves and, make decisions from

our higher self we follow our heart.
When it is out of balance we may have
difficulty in relationships, lack discipline,
be afraid of being hurt, be in or have been
in emotionally or physically abusive relationships, or feel abandoned.
We might also have issues with our
physical body such as developing asthma,
manifest blood problems such as anemia,
malaria or lymphoma; we may have problems with our thymus, our circulatory
system or breasts. Upper back and shoulder issues are also indications of a closed
or partially blocked anahata.

Cest what?

What does that mean for us? It gives us

a place to start the healing we all need.
When we understand what is holding us
back, we can begin unlocking the secrets
that have kept us from healing. With the
heart, it begins when we look at our relationships: with our self, or others. First, ask
yourself if youve recently experienced any
of the above symptoms (not all-inclusive).
Try to look at it from all angles. If youre
stuck on something, ask your angels or
higher power for help. Most importantly,
do not beat yourself up about things that
have taken a while to work through, or that
you didnt realize until now.
Crystals and gemstones can be powerful

tools to amp up the healing energy and

bring clarity and wisdom into the process.
How do you know which one to choose?
Look at the color of the chakra. This is a
good indicator of what color crystal to
choose. It is not by any means a hard and
fast rule, but gives you a place to start. The
heart chakra is seen as green, pink, or green
with a pink center. Emeralds, rose quartz,
green calcite and pink petalite are just a few
of the crystals you can use. I recommend
going to a store and choosing one versus
ordering over the Internet. Stones choose
you many times and when they do, they
can be that much more effective. The same
is true for just wearing or surrounding
yourself with the colors green and pink (for
guys, salmon and Packers green).

Food for lamour

Love your heart even more by eating the

right foods. Green leafy vegetables, such as
spinach, broccoli, cabbage, kale and celery,
and spices like, sage, cilantro and parsley
will all add beneficial healing to the heart
chakra. Dont like your vegetables? Try
them in a smoothie. There are several
books you can buy for recipes. If youre not
sure which one to choose, pick one up at
your local library.
Still not feeling the amore? Give Valentines Day cards to your neighbors, friends
and coworkers. Studies show that acts of

Chronic pain
affects your
quality of life
Ease your pain and watch
your relationships flourish!

By Sonya Sullins

any things can affect our ability to connect well in a

relationship romantic or otherwise. February brings
us Valentines Day. Whether you love this day and see
it as a reminder to share your feelings of love and affection, or see
it as an annoying a Hallmark holiday, the fact remains that you
will undoubtedly be likely to reflect upon the quality of your most
significant relationship (or lack thereof).
Chronic pain doesnt just hurt your body, it hurts your emotions
too. It can impact your mood, your memory, your relationships
and your overall quality of life. Negative emotions will only make
pain worse and, in turn, cause depression and other emotional
problems. To avoid this vicious cycle, find a pain management
therapy that is effective and minimizes both the physical and
emotional impacts of chronic pain.

Here are just some of the ways chronic pain

can affect your life

Pain and depression. Constant aches and pains can cause frustration, anger, anxiety and depression. If these emotions persist,
its important to take action. Distract yourself from constant pain
and brighten your mood by doing activities you love.
Pain and self-esteem. Pain can make it hard to perform well at
work, makes exercise a painful chore and makes even daily tasks
a struggle. Such limitations cause some pain sufferers to get down
on themselves or to view their chronic pain as a sign of weakness
or a personal defect. Dont go down that road. Manage your pain
before your self-esteem has diminished so that you can believe in
yourself and connect with others.
Pain and loneliness. When youre in constant pain, the last
thing you want to do is attend the company party, the neighbors
36

Natures Pathways | February 2015

backyard barbecue or even small gatherings with your closest

friends and family. Dont let pain drive you into social isolation
and make you feel lonely. To stay socially connected, focus on the
quality, not quantity, of friendships. Nurture ties with a handful
of close, supportive friends versus a vast network of more superficial acquaintances.
Pain and relationships. When you hurt all the time, its tough
to complete household chores, take care of the kids, contribute
financially or fully participate in normal family activities. Sexuality and intimacy can also take a hit from chronic pain. Frustration, resentment and communication breakdowns can occur
especially when a spouse doesnt understand or sympathize with
your condition.
Pain and fatigue. Pain is exhausting. A sore back, achy hip or bad
knee can steal your sleep, send your stress levels skyrocketing and
drain your motivation to exercise. Reduce fatigue by integrating the
right self-care measures into your pain management plan.

Fight pain with bioelectrotherapy

Your body is made up of energy centers, which bring vital life

energy to every organ. Bio electrotherapy uses micro current
frequencies that match the exact abnormal frequencies that
www.naturespathways.com

Bio electrotherapy is safe,

non-invasive and highly effective
in treating chronic pain.
are present in the damaged tissue so that those frequencies are
neutralized, allowing normal frequencies within the cells to be
restored. When this happens you are able to experience remarkable improvement in pain, inflammation and function. Bio electrotherapy is safe, non-invasive and highly effective in treating
chronic pain. It also does not contradict or interfere with any
other pain management therapies you may already be using.
If you are suffering from chronic pain, you realize the challenges
that come with it the fear of saying goodbye to the closeness and
connection you desire, the exhaustion and the short temper you feel
when doing easy things are hard because they hurt. Give yourself,
and your loved ones, a special gift the gift of a pain-free you! Stop
hurting and merely existing and start truly loving living!

The art of
belonging

By Barry Kerr and Kristine Gay

o you ever feel like a stranger in a strange land? Given

all the craziness on planet Earth, it might be comforting to know you dont belong here, like maybe you come
from a more functional alien planet. That would explain everything, right? Yet, even if that were true, youd still be feeling a bit
alone, like an outsider who doesnt belong.
Its a common feeling for most of us, one that comes and goes.
Even surrounded by friends and family we can feel alienated and
alone. The goodhearted intentions of those around us just dont
seem to meet the deep and meaningful connections for which
we long. This can show up in any number of ways. A political
conversation can feel flat and go awry because the other people
seem to lack a vision for what is possible and become pessimistic.
We might share a deep and personal spiritual insight with a close
friend or family member, only to find they cannot comprehend it,
or perhaps even dismiss it. It typically involves choosing to keep a
positive mood and conscious outlook when those around you fall
into cynicism, blame and complaint.
For those of us striving to spiritually grow and evolve and apply
our life lessons to change the day-to-day quality of our lives, the
above experiences can happen frequently; its inherent to being in
this world. However, there comes a time to notice whether these
types of life flattening non-connections with those around us have
become the dominant norm in our life. Do our dear old, lifelong
friends and family really see us anymore? Or do we have to sort
of step down the frequency of our thoughts and feelings in order
to maintain some kind of familiar bond? Would they tolerate us if
we expressed who we really authentically are?
Its a basic principle of human energy dynamics that people
who think more positive thoughts and choose more self-responsible feelings tend to unintentionally provoke discomfort in
less positive people around them. Misery loves company, they
say. And one of the ways our culture buys into that notion is by
confusing compassion and empathy with collusion and commiseration. Most of us were taught that to be a good friend or loved
38

Natures Pathways | February 2015

one means that when our friend is whining and complaining, our
role is to join in. Try offering an enlightened and consciousnessraising perspective at such a time and were likely to be accused
of not caring or worse, being a traitor. Weve probably all been on
either side of that equation and an occasional lapse can be harmless. However, when it becomes an ongoing pattern that defines
the relationship(s), perhaps its time to question the relationship.
Does it serve either party anymore?
Virtually everyone who journeys toward living more
consciously is going to reach one or more times in life when we
have to question all of our closest relationships. If we are to take
charge of the quality of our life, we must be willing to let go of
or diminish all of our closest relationships. Family may require
some contact, but we must redefine and create new boundaries.
Friends, on the other hand, are our family of choice, so its up to
us to choose. It doesnt require an absolute end. We can continue
to love and care about our people, just not give them as much time
and attention. If we still spend some time with them, but remain
true to our self, they may lose interest in spending more time with
us. Happily, sometimes old friends and family grow in the same
direction as we do, and the relationship evolves.
Making these powerful choices is really the best way to love
and respect others. Sometimes it feels sad to end relationships,
but when we do it, we open ourselves to new ones, and if we are
then living our lives more authentically, more consciously, we
attract similar souls. With these news friends, we share a common
vision and thus feel more seen, more understood. As we surround
ourselves with kindred spirits, we begin to feel once again that we
belong, perhaps still in a strange world, but not as a stranger.

I have
a
dream

By Omar

HERES MY VERSION of Martin Luther Kings dream: To create

wellness destinations in Madison and other hub cities, including

Appleton and Milwaukee, for millions of people.
Humanitys social problem-solving abilities lag appallingly behind
our technical prowess. Isnt it paradoxical that we confront such
disarray at our most affluent moment in history? As world citizens, we have everything needed to address nagging ecological,
economic, personal, political and social problems.
In the U.S. alone, food insecurity touches 17.6 million U.S.
households 1 in 7!
Ive personally seen the melting of glacial ice and believe it
contributes to heat waves, wildfires, floods and droughts.
Single parents head 13.7 million households, and raise 22
million children.
My dream is for people to playfully experience wellness retreats
in Madison and elsewhere. Well teach and learn with each other
how to improve how we feel, function, and solve problems, and
thereby prepare to influence effective action.
For years Ive sought to: think globally, act locally! When under
extreme stress and duress a story to share another day I
was falling apart, forced to shift personal focus from worldimproving action to salvage energy levels, and learned to solve
an array of physical, mental and emotional challenges for myself
and others. After 39 years of doing this, its time to broaden my
horizons in 2015!
Rich benefactors are desired, not required; the World Wide
Web is our first tool!
Upon spending thousands of hours compiling World Census
Summaries (WCS) to help people identify where and how many
people live within an easy drive to any location on the planet,
lets suppose that thousands of hubs will emerge where people
can visit collectives of wellness professionals, engaging in positive actions.
www.naturespathways.com

My dream is for people

to playfully experience
wellness retreats in
Madison and elsewhere.
Our prevailing conscious crisis afflicts everyone. Wellness is
our key to saving ourselves and our planet. Madison is one place
to pioneer the dream. There are others too: Appleton, Chicago,
Green Bay, Milwaukee, New York, the Twin Cities, etc.
More than 161 cities, towns and villages are within a three-hour
drive of Madison. With WCS, its easy to compile a list of nearby
locations around any emerging hub listing counties, town and
city zip codes, populations, distances and driving times.
Next steps: To improve personal energies by 10 to 50 percent. It
will then be easy to find extra hours to contemplate your next steps.
Stay tuned for an exciting year!
Omar of Omars Touch Therapy in Madison has, for 39 years, sought
to continually improve world-class therapeutic treatments, blending
50 or more modalities into mind, body spirit sessions. In 2015, he
embraces a larger dream to interact with dreamers, healers and
progressives worldwide. For more information, visit omarstouch.com,

Pet sensitivities
demystified
Tackle the irritations affecting
your animal friend
.....................................................................

et sensitivities are on the rise, yet

many pet owners may be unaware of
what is specifically impacting their
four-legged family members. With a host
of potential allergens and other irritants
possibly affecting your pet, it is crucial to
understand the source so you can mitigate
the negative effect it may be having on your
animals health and overall well-being.
Here are three common sources of sensitivities that may be affecting your cat or

dog, along with suggested remedies to help

your pet lead a healthier (and happier) life.

Outdoor pollutants

The great outdoors is often a major source

of allergens and irritants, which can be
linked to sensitivities. Just like humans,
pets can be impacted by seasonal, plantbased allergies. Pollens and grasses are
common sources during the warm spring
and summer months.

and take note if a reaction may be correlated with a particular season. If you are
concerned, you might consider a trip to
the vet to help determine your best course
of action.

Food

Food can also cause sensitivities. Michele

Dixon, a specialist in pet health and
nutrition at pet food company Petcurean,
agrees.
Food sensitivities are increasingly prevalent in pets such as cats and dogs, she
says. If you suspect your pet may be suffering from a food-related intolerance, try
replacing their food with one that is geared
towards their specific dietary needs.

Indoor allergens

Perhaps less of a perceived threat, indoor

allergens such as dust mites and mold
spores can also take their toll. Cleaning
your floors and carpets regularly to minimize the dust that has accumulated is one
method for decreasing the risk of these
issues.
By closely monitoring your pets exposure to indoor and outdoor allergens, and
keeping an eye on how they react to the
food they eat, you can help ensure your
pet thrives.

Adventures in
self-awareness
Allowing for the nature of death

By Nikki Cohen-Wichner, MS, LMFT

Dying is more than a set of problems to be solved. The nature of dying

is not medical, it is experiential. Dying is fundamentally a personal
experience, not a set of medical problems to be solved. Dr Ira Byock

was surrounded by death this holiday season four deaths

that represent the gamut of dying and mourning experiences.
From the sudden death of a young man caused by a car accident and another young mans tragic death following a decade
battling what became a terminal mental illness, to the loss of a
woman in mid-life after a brief yet courageous battle with brain
cancer and the death of an octogenarian through the peace-giving
death that can follow a long journey through Alzheimers, I have
been given the painful yet blessed opportunity to reflect upon
how our culture allows, or doesnt allow, for the nature of death.
Death is a natural part of life for all creatures on Earth, yet as

42

Natures Pathways | February 2015

humans moved away from the individuals reliance on hunting,

gathering or farming for survival, there has also been an increasing struggle to accept the nature of death. The struggle to accept
death and its process as a natural part of life seems to stem from
the fact that caring for the dying and the dead has become more a
part of our cultures industry than its communal experience.
Few people have had the sacred experience of caring for a loved
one as they die; fewer have been present during a death and far
fewer have helped prepare their loved one after death. Some of
you may feel unsettled even reading this; Im sorry if my directness is unsettling. Im a farm girl and had the sacred experience
of caring for my father in our home with hospice support until he
died peacefully in his own bed.
I was grateful when the nurses who helped us care for dad asked
if we wanted to help wash and change his clothes after he died.
Slowly massaging my dads back one last time allowed time for
a prayer of gratitude for the fact he spoke so directly about his
wishes and for the courage to walk beside him on his final journey.
Take a moment to ask yourself: How prepared are you to face
the loss of your independence? How prepared are your loved
ones to make decisions that honor your wishes for end of life
care and post-death handling of your estate and personal matters,
such as funeral and burial plans, dissemination of your personal
belongings, and guardianship of your children and/or pets? How
prepared are you to 100 percent represent the wishes of your loved
one without your own opinions overshadowing the decisionmaking process if youre granted durable power of attorney?
Have conversations taken place that will allow all involved to
truly honor the wishes of the person who can no longer make
fully independent decisions? We live in not only an aging society,
www.naturespathways.com

but also a society in which medical technology prolongs life

often with a result that leaves people less capable of making their
own decisions. It is critical to have these conversations far earlier
in life than generations before us.
These conversations arent easy for anyone, including physicians who specialize in fields with high mortality rates such as
oncology. According to a Coping with Cancer study, two-thirds
of the terminal cancer patients in the study reported having had
no discussion with their doctors about their goals for end-oflife care, despite being, on average, just four months from death.
Statistics from this study may lead you to pause for a moment
and ponder the benefits of such conversations.
The third who had such conversations with their physicians
were far less likely to undergo cardiopulmonary resuscitation, be put on a ventilator or end up in an intensive care
unit.
Two-thirds of those who had such conversations enrolled in
hospice.
Hospice patients suffered less, were physically more capable,
and were better able, for a longer period, to interact with others.
Six months after the patients died their family members
were much less likely to experience persistent major
depression.
I have supported clients and their families through such conversations with their healthcare teams. The patient seems to have
more of a peaceful end-of-life journey with a higher level of
feeling in control despite inherent losses. Ive also witnessed a far
healthier mourning process among those left behind, with open
expressions of gratitude for the hard yet helpful conversations.
Atul Gawande, a surgeon, public-health researcher and staff
writer for The New Yorker stated, We must have breakpoint
discussions with patients, a systematic series of conversations
to sort out when they need to switch from fighting for time
to fighting for the other things that people valuebeing with
family or travelling or enjoying chocolate ice cream. Few people
have such discussion, and there is good reason for anyone to
dread these conversations. They can unleash difficult emotions.
People can become angry or overwhelmed. Handled poorly, the
conversations can cost a persons trust. Handled well, they can
take real time.
Next month Ill explore how to ensure that such conversations
are handled well.

LISTENING AND LIVING FROM THE HEART continued from page 41

physical bodies the reactions to life, so its hard not to listen to

the gut. We may find that we misinterpret some of the feelings
that we experience and react ineffectively.
We are evolving into new beings as we shift to the heart reaction. We are merging the gifts of the mind and the gut and
creating an all-encompassing way to move through life. The
heart holds the ability to honor empathy and compassion. Your
intuition can guide you from the heart, bringing in the feelings
from the gut while listening to the mind and guidance from the
divine. Uniting in the heart gives an opportunity to take a step
back and see from a place of love. We know love on many levels,
the amazing gift we can feel and share that invisibly shifts our
whole journey as humans.

So how can the practice of listening and living

from the heart come into our daily lives?
Open your heart to receive and listen through meditation
Give yourself time to transition gracefully to this new way of
living by taking a few minutes each day to sit quietly and open
your heart. This may bring up many things for you, such as visual
reflection or emotions, but allow the process to work. Be quiet and
listen with your intent to open your heart. The answers and sensations that come may astound you and you will carry them with
you into the world. Take time to recognize the difference between
your desires and the message you hear and feel within. Allow
yourself to give compassion to you first and love your own heart.
Share your hearts wisdom with others
As you move through your day there is no doubt that there will be
potential obstacles and irritations. This is your time to put what you
have experienced firsthand into action! The lines may be long or
traffic may be delayed and youre already running late. The mind
may bring up that first judgment and the gut may be agitated, but
the heart sends compassion or patience to those involved, including you, in that situation. The openness that you felt for yourself,
the message you heard from the heart can be sent to others. The
ripple effect that this has is something to experience firsthand and I
encourage you to try it. Think of it as an experiment in love.
There are undoubtedly gifts to the mind and gut reactions; this
though is a personal soul challenge to break out of the muscle
memory and share your love. It starts with you and your own path
before it can be shared with others. Your love and intuition are your
guides, so take a moment or step back in your perspective, whatever
your practice may be and listen and live from the heart.

Fostering
your
intention

By Kathy Milanowski, Karuna Reiki Master Teacher

he development of your intention may have several

avenues. It may be for you, a loved one, or for a client.
Frequently, a client will come into the sanctuary for a
treatment needing clarity in formulating their intention for the
session. In fact, many have repeatedly said that it is the hardest
part of the entire treatment process and may even shy away from
the session before it even begins. This saddens me because there is
no reason for it. We all get to that spot in life and only need gentle
reminders on how to reconnect with our higher self, or just create
the space for them to reconnect.
Lets start with the basics on how to create that space. If you are
the facilitator then you need to develop and cultivate your trusting link to yourself first.
STEP ONE: Develop a sacred space in your physical surround-

ings, a space that makes you feel good. Trust in yourself. You can
do it! Now you just created something quite special to you. After
developing this you can carry that image and that feeling with you
anywhere you go.
STEP TWO: Connect with yourself. Like any other type of exer-

cise, repetition builds and strengthens you. Most of us are not

raised to believe that our etheric bodies need exercise too. Comfort
yourself and whom youre working with. Compassion works well
unlocking those doorways and it develops the trust between the
two of you. After trust is developed, fear has no power.

What is your intention for this healing session? After that trust
has ignited, you will get an answer.
The soul, our higher self mantra: I am a clear and perfect channel.
I am the light divine. I am divine trust. I am divine love and
design, I am divinity. I am the soul and you are loved dearly.
Namaste.
There are workshops available to guide you on the path of
manifesting your intention. Please inquire by email: beautyofcompassion@gmail.com.

STEP THREE: Center yourself. Take the time to relax and focus

your attention toward your heartbeat. A meditation works wonders.

To do this with another, use comforting and compassionate conversation and then go into a simple meditation with your client.
STEP FOUR: Develop the intention. Individually or with a client,

Bromelain
Ananas comosus L.
(pineapple plant)

romelain, or pineapple extract, is a mixture of enzymes

found in the pineapple plant. Pineapple is native to the
Americas but is now grown throughout the world in tropical and subtropical regions. Historically, natives of Central and
South America used pineapple for a variety of ailments, such as
digestive disorders.
Currently, bromelain is used as a dietary supplement for nasal
swelling and inflammation, osteoarthritis, cancer, poor digestion
and muscle soreness. Topical (applied to the skin) bromelain is
used for wounds and burns.
Bromelain is obtained from the stem or fruit of the pineapple.
It is sold in the form of a powder, cream, tablet or capsule, and it
may be used alone or in combination with other ingredients.

How much do we know?

There have been several studies on the use of bromelain for nasal
swelling and inflammation and for removing dead skin from
burns. Little research has been done on other uses of bromelain.

What have we learned?

A systematic review of the evidence indicates that bromelain is

helpful in relieving symptoms of acute nasal and sinus inflammation when used in combination with standard medications.
Research in human and animal studies has found that topical
bromelain preparations may help remove dead skin from burns.
However, not enough evidence exists to show whether topical
bromelain helps to treat burns and other wounds.
There is conflicting evidence about whether bromelain, alone
or in combination with other ingredients, is helpful for osteoarthritis and for muscle soreness after exercise.
There is not enough evidence to determine if bromelain is effective for the other conditions for which it has been used, including
cancer and gastrointestinal problems.
A National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)-funded research is examining bromelain for
inflammatory conditions and asthma.

What do we know about its safety?

There have been some reports of gastrointestinal problems,

increased heart rate and menstrual problems in people who have
taken bromelain orally.
Allergic reactions may occur in individuals who are sensitive or
allergic to pineapples or who may have other allergies.

Natures gift:
Sacred breath of
life or pranayama
Part II Meditation leads to
personal transformation

By Ken-Adi Ring

n the January issue, I spoke of pranayama or energy of the atom.

You were introduced to a simple yet powerful technique of
breathing used in Vipassana or mindfulness meditation. Utilizing this sacred breath as an important tool for calming and healing is
also known as pranayama in yoga. Pranayama refers to extension and
embracing of the life force or, literally, the breath. Vipassana refers to
insight. The spiritual life force, prana, is infinitely wise and the breath
actually breathes you whether youre awake or asleep. It is a vehicle
for self-realization. You dont have to think about the energy of the
atom in every cell. This same energy drives the cosmos. There are
over 50 types of pranayama available and taught around the world.
Weve established that the way you breathe affects your quality
of life and can be a tool for wellness. Breathe take a long
leisurely breath right now. See. Conscious breathing techniques
access better health and self-awareness and heightened states
of consciousness are available. Meditation is useful for moving
beyond distractions and toward peace. How can our breath have
an impact upon our health and awareness? It leads to life-giving
deep vitality and even sacred experiences. Through breath work,
a major tool for meditation, a practitioner can overcome fear, heal
illness and experience the divine.
For our purpose, we will use the above mentioned technique or
doorway known as Vipassana. Prominent credit goes to Buddhist
Indian master S.N. Goenka for advancing Vipassana (mindfulness)
meditation here in the late 20th century. My first experiences with
meditation were my first yoga classes in the 1970s, followed by teaching. Then I attended a 10-day, Goenka Vipassana meditation for 10
hours a day, a silent retreat in Texas in 1995 in one of three Vipassana
centers. Popularity has since increased, and now there are nearly a
dozen centers around the country. (The nearest is in Rockford, Illinois.) Mindfulness meditation is also promoted and taught by others,
most notably, Jon Kabot-Zinn, making it more available for students
in the west since the 1990s. His recent feature on the prominent TV
www.naturespathways.com

news program 60 Minutes gave it even more of a boost.

Considering the way we breathe and learning to utilize the
breath as a change agent for your life is easy. It is not meant to be
hard; Deepak Chopra encourages us by inferring that no special
place or time is necessary, you can start practice anywhere and
at any time. The western mind is often busy and in such a hurry,
and it is good to just meditate when you can though its best after
getting up in the morning, starting your day calm and integrated.
You can also do it on the bus to work or school, at lunch, in the
late afternoon after a busy day, or at night before bed. Or one can
do walking meditation, aware of each step, watching the breath.
15-20 minutes is a good timeframe. It can sometimes take 5 to
10 minutes for even experienced meditators to settle in. Find a
comfortable place to sit. Sitting up straight is important for the
spine. Then simply watch the breath as it inspires-respires. No
effort needed. Even if you are disabled or infirm, do the best you
can with what you have the breath will guide you and help
you become strong. Eventually your own innate wisdom from
watching the breath will bring you to a comfortable practice and
schedule suitable for you; this process cannot be forced. Relax into
it. Simply watch the breath. The wisdom is in the breath. Let it
take you to that wisdom in you as you practice. In the book The
Miracle of the Breath, Andy Caponigro says, The spiritual life
force that dwells in your breath is infinitely wise.
More sincere and serious change can be achieved as you evolve
your practice. Serious breath work/meditation, abdominal breathing, watching every aspect nostrils, belly rising and falling
and consistency are key elements. Incorporating these elements
will become a natural outcome of mind/body awareness as you go.
With perseverance and commitment come lasting results deepening the experience. Do not feel disheartened if the earth doesnt
move, just keep it up. In a few days or weeks of dedication you

Depression,
anxiety and
seasonal mood
changes

By Carrie Decker, ND

ith the winter in full force, shorter days, less fresh air
and cold temperatures forcing us to take shelter inside
our homes, diminished emotional stability and altered
mood issues are common. For individuals who experience a chronically lower mood, this may edge them further toward depression.
For others, the slight tendencies to an anxious response become a
daily struggle, and sleep or relationship problems result from this.
Fortunately there are many things which can be done to support the
mood and rejuvenate the body so it is ready for another summer.
In the winter the body needs more energy to keep it warm, and
digestion may be compromised because of this. Taking more time
to cook and preparing foods that are more warming will nurture
our internal energy. Warming foods include things that have been
cooked for longer times: root vegetables and spices such as ginger
and turmeric. Beverages, which enhance warmth such as turmeric
and ginger tea with coconut milk, will bring warmth to the body

48

Natures Pathways | February 2015

and digestive system. Avoiding things that are cold or uncooked

will support digestive tone as well.
Exercise is supportive to a healthy mood as it releases endorphins.
Endorphins are hormones which make your body feel good, and
decrease your perception of pain. Getting regular exercise and fresh
air also helps the body to have improved appetite and sleep. Exercise
helps boost self-esteem, and also supports healthy metabolism and
cardiovascular health. Moving the body improves circulation, and for
people who are chronically chilly or old this is helpful.
Fish oil contains essential fatty acids (also known as omega-3s),
which are necessary (essential!) for the body as we are not able
to produce them. The parent fatty acid for omega-3 production
is alpha-linolenic acid; however, this is not efficiently converted
into the forms of omega-3s found in fish oil (EPA and DHA),
making these nutrients in supplement or food form also essential.
Omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory and support cellular
membrane fluidity. Both of these mechanisms may be important
for maintaining a healthy mood and emotional balance.
Vitamin D is converted to the active form in the skin by sunlight
exposure, and the portion of the ultraviolet spectrum (UVB)
necessary for this is not present in winter. This causes supplemental vitamin D to be necessary. An alternate option would be the
usage of a specialty sun lamp which provides the UVB wavelength
necessary for vitamin D synthesis. However, as this may also lead
to sunburn and damage associated with the development of skin
cancer, one must use caution with such exposure.
Probiotics are something which most people have heard of, and
tend to think of as exclusively affecting digestive health. But probiotics have been shown to have an effect on metabolism, immune
system function, inflammation, allergies, skin conditions, as well
as mood. The effect of probiotics tends to be something that occurs
www.naturespathways.com

over a long period of time. Supporting the body on a daily basis

with a quality probiotic year round (altering the specific type every
couple of months) will support overall health as well as mood.
B vitamins support the body in many ways, and in the context of
mood, are important for synthesis and conversion of amino acids into
neurotransmitters. Methylated forms of B12 and folate are important for supporting the bodys processes of methylation essential
for DNA transcription and all aspects of metabolic function. Poor
ability to methylate due to genetic variations is common, and such
individuals may be predisposed to anxiety and or depression as well
as other common disease conditions. By providing these nutrients in
methylated forms, physiology as a whole is better supported.
In addition to each of these things, it is important to remember
that companionship and connection to others also is important.
Finding ways to include community and connection by attending a
class, community activity or other activity with group involvement
will benefit health and the heart in many ways. Giving and receiving
hugs promotes the release of oxytocin, a hormone which has many
actions in the body, including that of reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of connectedness and trust. Do consider this and each
of these things as you support your mood this winter season!

ATURES GIFT: SACRED BREATH OF LIFE OR PRANAYAMA

will feel results as you are led deeper into mind/body wisdom.
Eventually, conscious intentional deep breathing and accessing the diaphragm or our sacred belly will help you evolve your
practice. Allow the diaphragm to extend down into the visceral
area of the belly. It is an important part of entering into the zone
of quieting the mind as we have an internal embrace of the body
with breath. Distractions such as thoughts, body discomforts
and even an itch will fade away with practice. Feel free to adjust
yourself. Remember, prana is the energy of the atom. Embrace it
as it always embraces you.
Meditation positively affects respiration, circulation, cardiovascular, digestion, metabolism, endocrine, lymph, nervous and immune
systems, as well as calming and enlightening the body/mind. Meditation benefits stress-related disorders and impacts sleep disorders.
It improves autonomic functions and relieves symptoms of asthma
and other respiratory issues. Steady practice is transformational
and develops a steady mind, clears the mind for enhanced perception, strengthens willpower and sound judgment, while extending
healthy life. Daily practice evokes a profound experience of selfawareness leading to nirvana, which is beyond body.

Madison Manual Medicine

Meet Dr. Jed Downs

adison Manual Medicine was established in 2011. My

wife and I moved to the area to be close to family.
Concomitantly, I decided to break from traditional
medical practice and pursue osteopathic manipulative medicine
full time. In my practice as an occupational medicine physician, I had ethical dilemmas of varying import. The first was that
many people had ongoing pain complaints post injury that did
not respond satisfactorily to standard medical practice of injections, medications and exercise protocols. There were injured
workers who pursued surgical corrections that occasionally left
them in a worse condition than before surgery. Starting in 1995, I
introduced myself to osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM).
The skills of OMM gave me greater insight into mechanisms of
ongoing pain and discomfort due to improper body function that
was different than pain due to anatomic injury. These problems
could often be corrected or minimized with nothing more technical and nothing less amazing than human touch and guidance.
There were other ethical issues. Many times the injured worker
had simply aggravated a pre-existing condition that was secondary to prior injury, birth trauma, postural habits, obesity or other
factors that were not work related. The workers compensation
systems goal is that people be able to return to work in their preinjury capacity. Many times, once broken, the person couldnt be
returned to health without addressing the pre-existing condition.
The workers compensation system does not work well with this
continuum of care. Moreover, primary insurance does not kick in
if a problem is considered to be work related.
There are other problems providing OMM within the insurance
framework. What insurers reimburse is determined by cookie
cutter, CPT codes. There are 9 different regions of the body that
50

Natures Pathways | February 2015

can be coded for OMM reimbursement. The more areas treated,

the higher the reimbursement. If I worked on a patients needs
of the day, I might treat 2 or I might treat 9 different areas in an
extended time block. As the resource being utilized is the time
spent on application of skills in treatment, I objected to the pressure to code fraudulently or to get poorly paid. After 20 years,
my solution was to move outside of the insurance company
constraints and try to offer osteopathic services at a reasonable
price as simply as possible.
The list of conditions treatable by osteopathy is huge but not infinite. Its not appropriate for cancer patients when fighting active
disease. It can be appropriate as a comfort measure if someone is
on hospice status. It will not repair major anatomic tears, such as
ACL tear of the knee or a fully torn rotator cuff muscle. It is often
contraindicated if there are clinical signs of bleeding.
I decided that if I was going to provide osteopathic care I needed
to get as skilled as possible at the craft. I had applied to fellowships
within the USA to obtain training in get American certification
and training. As an MD I was precluded from qualification. I
instead pursued traditional osteopathic training in Canada. The
Canadian training qualifies me to practice in Europe, Australia,
New Zealand and is recognized by the World Osteopathic Health
Organization.

Finding
the
mirror

By Jennifer M. Warner, MSE, LPC
and Holistic Psychotherapist

irroring occurs all the time in our lives. The expectation of others changing while we do not is not going to
work. Therefore, the aspects of ourselves are reflected
in others. It is often the things we dont like in others that will
show us the things that we dont like about ourselves. These are
the things that we have difficulty accepting as true. We often deal
with these negative feelings or judgments by projecting them onto
another. This is done mostly unconsciously or without awareness.

Some questions to be asked of oneself to assist in

finding the mirror are:

1. What aspect of myself is this person reflecting back to me?

2. What am I afraid of seeing in that persons behavior?
3. What is the fear that I am acting in the same way either with

this person or others?

4. What is the lesson I am to learn? Could it be self-love,

acceptance, compassion or being authentic?

5. What role does this person serve for me?

Remember that the person who is causing upset in your life isnt
random, as there is something there for you to learn. You can use
these lessons as a way to assist you in discovering what you have
yet to heal in your life.

Lastly, thank them (not necessarily in person) but from your heart
for what they have taught you about yourself and the relationship.
When we do this kind of work a shift occurs in which we are more
easily able to release the person, conflict and event energetically and
thus change or alter the dynamic. This isnt just a gift to yourself, but
to that person, that relationship, and to the rest of the universe. When
we make the choice to heal, we assist in the healing of all.
This helps us move toward being a heart-centered world. When
we come from the heart, we are offered an opportunity to evolve
all of humanity. We are moving from a separateness mentality to
an interconnected one as we are not separate. Remember you are
in charge of your journey!
Jennifer M. Warner, MSE, LPC, is a Holistic Psychotherapist,
Avatar Master, and Reiki practitioner who uses holistic and experiential therapies to empower individuals, couples, and families

Ways to clear the mirror

Acceptance is key! Can you accept the role that this person has
played, along with their actions to help you learn this lesson?
Can you accept their role in your life without any judgment? Can
you allow yourself to let go of any anger toward this person who
assisted in you learning the lesson? Can you allow the person to
be who they are and appreciate them just the way they are? Its not
about trying to control anothers behavior or actions.

Dance/Movement Classes
Our dance/movement classes utilize the eight fundamental movement patterns that human beings are
programmed to move through from 0 to 12 months.
These developmental movement patterns wire the
central nervous system, laying the foundation for
sensory-motor development and lifelong learning.
Working through these movement patterns may
correct flaws in a persons perceptual process and
reorganize the central nervous system to better develop proprioception, balance, attention, memory,
eye-tracking, behavior, sensory integration and motor skills. Neurological re-patterning coordinates all
parts of the brain and body for emotional, social and
cognitive balance. Register today for one or more
classes! For more information, call 608-577-5733 or
