Fall/Winter
2014/15 Catalog
Dear Seeders,
The spring of 2014 was blessed with just enough rain at regular intervals.
We tilled in our cover crops, planted, weeded and then top dressed with organic
compost. The crops went berzerk! Last frost was early May, so our Peppers were
set out early and Tomatoes graced our salads before the fragrance of summer
mowing had the chance to remind us of picnics gone by. In the context of this
interplay, botanical delights and starry nights, we offer this fall catalog for your
gardening pleasure. May it seed the growth of your self-sufficiency in food,
medicine and happiness!
We had our challenges, of course, who doesnt? It was mid-July and my
usual flow had been diverted into numerous rivulets. I was bobbing around like a
chip of Cedar trying to decide which waterway would take me to the sea.
Hurrying out to the greenhouse, I went to grab a Gotu Kola plant that needed to
be transplanted to the garden, and in my haste stepped wonky on a concrete block.
It turned under my foot and as I fell, the corner of the block gashed deeply into
the side of my foot. It was not a wound that could be ignored, so after binding it
up (and planting the Gotu Kola), I embarked on a healing regimen that involved
three processes: Hot and cold soaks with Epsom salts, Goldenseal tincture, and
Comfrey root poultices. The Epsom salts clean the wound, the Goldenseal disinfects, and the Comfrey poultice speeds healing. It is a strange pair of bedfellows
in a way, Goldenseal being a smooth-leaved, rare and delicate plant of the forest,
and Comfrey being a rough-leaved, common and coarse plant of the open garden
and orchard. However, never was there a marriage more dynamic.
The wound, which really should have been stitched together with thread,
instead was sealed by the comforting combination of these good herbs. The
Goldenseal kept the swelling at bay, while the Comfrey root soothed the sore and
promoted growth of new tissue to fill in the gap. Reclining on my bed, foot
encased in a gooey mass, a towel strategically placed to preserve the bedsheets,
I had some time on my hands. Calling for my guitar, I played chords while the
poultice did its work. It was just what the doctor (didnt) order. This became my
routine, bandaging the foot in the morning, going about my work, and then poulticing in the afternoon. The Gotu Kola plant stretched in the sunshine and made a
flower. The Tomatoes ripened, the weeds grew with a vengeance, the wound
healed, and I soon strode, unlimping, with renewed appreciation, into the garden.

WHATS NEW
WHATS NEW
We here at Horizon Herbs have always delighted in making new offerings, highlighted in the pages of this catalog with the symbol <<NEW FOR 2015>>. First
off you might check page 13 for two new seed collections. Bouquet Garni is an
ages-old dry herb bundling technique for flavoring soups and sauces. Our new
offering of organic French Thyme is central to this formula. The Fines Herbes
seed collection will produce a delicious combination of herbs that are best
chopped fresh into scrambles, stir-fries, protein and vegetable dishes. This formula includes Chives, which is one of our new Alliums. In that vein, we are also
pleased to offer elegant Blue Solaise Leeks and the irrepressable Welsh Onion.
Aloes! Weve added 24 new species, a startling array of African succulents ranging from the dwarf Aloe (A. krapohliana) to the tallest tree Aloe (A barberae).
Zebra Aloes, Tiger Aloes, Fond-of-Stones Aloes, and even the highly sought-after
Spiral Aloe are now available. We believe that the newly updated cultivation
directions for growing Aloes from seed will be of great help, and really wish you
could have shared our delight when the Tree Aloes germinated5 days and there
they were, poking their succulent little tips right up through the white pumice.
We wanted to kiss them, but they were, alas, too small for our lips.
Check the MEDICINAL HERB SECTION for exciting listings like Osha
roots, Western Blue Flag, Western Spiderwort, Bundle Flower, Herba Stella, Hops
(yes, you can effectively grow Hops from seed!), and Wasabi. The Peony section
is up and running with the official Chinese herb P. lactiflora in the forefront. The
Ephedra section is a hidden jewel, with newly harvested organic seed of Bluestem
Ephedra (E. equisetina) and Ma-huang (E. sinica). This is just a heads-up, these
will sell out!
Check the TREE SECTION for availability of Black Goji plants and
newly harvested NEEM seed. Planting trees from seed is such a great pleasure,
especially if this can be done with children. After all, it is the children who will
most benefit from planting trees, along with the squirrels, the robins, and their
friends that variously cheep, chortle, call, crawl and whistle. Plant trees, people.
It is our best way of giving back to the Earth that which she has selflessly provided usour very life.
Beyond our wildest dreams, the Oregonians of Jackson and Josephine
County (our farms are in Josephine) recently passed a measure banning the growing of GMO crops. Hooray! It is REALLY GREAT to know that GMO Corn and
Beets are not sharing their questionable pollen with our organic crops. We extend
our thanks to all the people who worked so tirelessly to provide this safe haven!
This is to announce that Making Plant Medicine, your primary reference for herbal recipes, is now an e-book available for download to Kindle!

AFRICAN SPICES
These spices are grown by hand on a small, mixed crop spice plantation in the
midst of the jungles of Pemba (the greenest island of the Spice Islands of
Zanzibar), hand picked and cured in the sun. Although they are not certified
organically grown, they are of highest quality, and weve personally verified that
no chemicals or fertilizers are used in their planting, growing, processing, and
storage. Recent spices of highest quality offered at a very reasonable price.
MycoBlast mycorrhizal
inoculant. Mycoblast is a concentrated
soil inoculant that uses the power of beneficial fungi to create a symbiosis
between the roots of the plants and the
soil. Glomus spp., beneficial Bacillus
spp., and Trichoderma harzianum in a
base of powdered Kelp. The packet
mixes easily into one gallon of water,
which may then be used to water your
plants, helping them absorb water and
nutrients more efficiently, leaving the soil
spongy and alive. We have become
addicted to this in our growing, especially
when watering in transplants. Mycoblast
tea really helps them them take root. We
have also discovered that watering in
newly seeded flats of Astragalus and
Licorice with Mycoblast vastly improves
germination, growth and nitrogen nodulation of these choice entities.

Neem Oil Soap. What we imagined was going to be a potent medicinal soap also
turned out to be a premier all-purpose bath and hand soap. Formulated by Richo and
handmade by Bunnys Bath, this gentle yet potent bar has proven its excellence. The soap
is made of organic Olive oil, contains fragrantly circulation-stimulating oil of Rosemary,
and is preserved with a water extract of Rosemary. The active ingredient is the fixed oil
of the Neem seed, introduced in a special process whereby the oil remains potent in the
end product. Neem oil has been shown to be antifungal to athletes foot; helps clear acne;
antiparasitic to fleas, head lice and body lice.

Seed Cleaning Screens: Set of 8 precision stainless steel screens mounted in frames of
Port Orford Cedar. Each screen is 1 foot square and 3 inches deep. Handmade, these are
extremely tough and they smell excellently of Cedar. Specifically designed for sorting and
cleaning a diverse array of types and sizes of seeds, they graduate from 4 strands per inch
(i.e. 1/4 inch opening) down to 40 strands per inch (extremely fine). The graduated sizes
assist in separating viable seed from inferior seed and cleaning seeds of chaff and dust.
They will work equally well on medicinal herb seeds, flower seeds, and vegetable seeds.
The screens are also useful for removing stems from dried culinary or medicinal herbs and
for grinding dried leafy herbs into the appropriate sizes (e.g. stemless tea cut, coarse grind
for tincturing, or powder for encapsulation). These screens are only available as a set and
function best as a setonce you start to use them, youll see what we mean, and youll be
glad you have them all.

Planting dormant, live roots in the fall is simply the best way to get these much
sought after plants established in your gardens. Far from lying asleep in the soil,
the fall-planted rhizomes soon begin to dig in to their new home, sending out
feeder roots and gaining a sense of place. By the time spring rolls around, your
fall-planted live roots are ready to shoot up, leaf out, flower, and fruit from an
established and nicely acclimatized foundation. We begin shipping in September,
continuing till we get snow and the ground freezesusually mid to late
December. Although we are well-stocked, your early order assures availability.
Black Cohosh . . . . .Cimicifuga racemosa
This is the most universally adaptable of all
the Appalachian medicinals. We receive
ongoing reports from gardening friends all
over the United States who have been hugely successful in cultivating this plant from
our vigorous, weighty rootstock. A showy
favorite on the shady border, striking compound leaves give rise to tall, white flowering racemes to 5 feet. illus. above, comparison of Black and Blue Cohosh roots,

Bloodroot . . . . . . .Sanguinaria canadensis
The early spring flowers are pure white, arising from the blood-red rhizomes prior to the
unfurling of the fleshy, palmate leaves.
When transplanting, place the rhizome at the
soil surface, buried only about halfway in,
making sure the rootlets are covered with
soil. Then cover with mulch. After several
years the Bloodroot will naturalize. The sap
of the plant contains the alkaloid sanguinarine; an expectorant and anticancer agent.

GOLDENSEAL
Goldenseal . . . . . . .Hydrastis canadensis
Family: Crowfoot
(Ranunculaceae)
Woodland herbaceous perennial.
Native to the central and eastern
hardwood forests of America,
Goldenseal is one of the best
herbal medicines, being astringent and antibacterial, used for
treatment of a wide array of
wounds and internal ailments,
especially useful in treating
infections of all kinds. The herb
is insanely popular and sells
well wherever it is encountered,
be it in the herb store, farmers
market or roadside stand. We
have had a very good year on
Goldenseal seed and are eager
to move deeply discounted 10 g
packets of this vibrant seed on
to serious gardeners who would
make a smart investment in this
popular herb.
Why grow Goldenseal from seed?
Planting the seed in shadehouse, shade garden or forest bed gets the plant started
out just the same way as it would grow in nature. There are over 500 seeds in a
$29.85 packet of Goldenseal seeds, and this many roots would cost over
$1,000.00. Of course it takes a couple of years for the seedlings to grow to root
size, but this is one of those cases where a little patience may produce big profit in
the long run. Furthermore, we have found that Goldenseal roots grown from seed
actually put on more mass faster than mature Goldenseal roots planted out to the
shade garden. It appears that once the plant begins to make flowers and berries,
this is where it puts most of its effort. Growing from seed looks better and better!
When do I plant it? Thats the whole point! It is time to plant it NOW, in a
cool, moist and shady spot, buried about 1 inch in the mineral soil, tamped
securely, and covered with an inch or two of leaf mulch or moist coir. Emergence
of the healthy seedling is in the spring. Pretty easy to plant. More info at

VEGETABLE SEEDS
To Plant Late Summer to Early Spring
Standard fall vegetable culture: Because vegetables have been tamed by long human
association, most of them respond favorably to the same general cultivation scenario: sun,
soil, and rain. First, amend your garden soil by incorporating cover crops and organic compost or worm castings. Then, prepare a fine seedbed by raking out the clumps, making the
beds about 4 feet wide with 2-foot paths in between. To plant seeds, make a furrow across
the surface of the bed, sprinkle in the seeds, cover them with soil and tamp down securely.
Summer-sown seeds are best planted about twice as deep as spring-sown seeds. Try to keep
the bed evenly moist until germ. Once the seeds germinate and the seedlings have sized up
a bit, thin them to the desired spacing. Cultivate often around the vegetables, using a hoe
or better yet, your fingers. Water only in the morning, evening, or night. Water deeply twice
a week, more if the sun is particularly fierce, less if there is rain. The following vegetables
have been chosen because they are fast maturing, cold-resistant, and store well. Many of
them taste sweeter after frost. Once temperatures begin to dip, you can extend the season
by mulching heavily, providing a floating row cover or by enclosing the plants in a cloche.
Happy winter salads!

Why plant medicinal herb seeds in the fall? We estimate that 50% of temperate species
germinate most reliably when planted using standard technique in a warm greenhouse or
spring garden. But the remaining 50% do best sown OUTDOORS or in the COLD
GREENHOUSE in the fall or very early spring (and this catalog focuses largely on seeds
of this sort). Of these, some germinate relatively quickly in the fall
(e.g. Poppies and Shepherds Purse) and overwinter as a small rosette, flowering usually
in the following spring. Others simply must be sown in the fall in order to achieve germination in the spring (e.g. Elderberry, Goldenseal, Ginseng, Spikenard, Yellow Gentian).

ALOE
Aloe, the very word feels cool, smooth and healing! Perennial succulents in the Asphodel
family, these make fascinating and long-lived indoor plants, require minimal care, and tend
to produce lovely flowers at the most unexpected moment. Meanwhile, they remain readily available on windowsill or in rock garden to extract oos and ahs from visitors, or to
provide cool mucilage to assuage burns and abrasions. We now offer one of the most complete selections of Aloe seeds that can be found worldwide, and we have tested them all to
confirm viability. Starting Aloes from seed: Sow seed in regular greenhouse conditions
or indoors in a warm and light location. We checked the soil temperature of one of our germinating flats and found that the temperature was 72F, which is slightly warmer than standard room temperature. Use 2-inch or 4-inch square pots filled with potting soil composed
of 50% sifted compost and 50% fast-draining medium.(coarse, sharp sand, poultry grit or
white pumice). Plant 5 seeds or more per pot (Aloes love crowding in the seedling stage).
Place seed on surface of potting soil and cover with 1/8 inch of coarse, sharp sand or poultry grit. Then, cover with an additional 1/4 inch layer of white pumice (see page 10 this catalog). The sand holds the seed in place and the pumice shades the germinating seed and
props up the fat little seedling once it elongates. Tamp securely and water gently once daily
until germination, which occurs in 1 to 3 weeks. Keep seedlings warm and somewhat shaded. Water by misting from above. Do not bottom water or the pumice, seeds and
seedlings will float away! If seedlings bronze, then there is too much light or too much or
not enough water. Adjust environment until they green up. Grow seedlings closely together for 3 months to a year, then individuate. To plant seedling Aloes, use the same potting
soil and be sure to mulch deeply with pumice around the crown of the plant, to keep it
propped up and dry. Keep Aloes in a light window (North or Eastern facing windows are
best) or, if growing one of the cold tolerant varieties, plant outdoors in the rock garden and
take note of the minimum F. Protect from frost means the plant must be kept indoors or
brought indoors for the winter, where they will cleanse your air and assuage your blues!

Sending out plants in the fall is one of our greatest pleasures. We have
trimmed, weeded, watered, and compost tead our little charges all summer
long, and by September they are sized up and yearning to be transplanted.
Indoor plants, trees, frost-sensitive plants, pet plants, cacti, rare plants,
and fragile plants are usually best potted up right away to larger containers.
Use gallon pots for regular-sized plants, or use 3-gallon pots for trees.
Outdoor plants, herbaceous perennials, frost-hardy plants, and the more
robust herbs, woody perennials and vines can be transplanted directly to
the garden or landscape. Properly planted and cared for, such plants will
produce a substantial root system that will overwinter and serve as a powerful foundation for next years growth. Feel free to take advantage of this
fall sale, where we match our larger plants with a smaller price tag!

Family: Mint (Lamiaceae)
Holy Basil attracts good luck, an auspicious
plant to have around the house or in the
teacup. OM SHANTI OM
Tea herb from the Ayurvedic tradition that is
uplifting to the spirit and healthy for the
body.
Uses include stress reduction,
immune enhancement, promoting longevity,
improving metabolic oxygenation, increasing endurance, fighting infections, and
improving digestion. By growing different
kinds, you get a chance to appreciate the
subtle differences in growth habit, color and
taste, and determine which ones grow best
in your area. Sow seed in the spring on soil
surface and press in, then keep moist and in
the light. Germination may take up to 3
weeks. Thin seedlings and pot up once they
have achieved the second set of true leaves.
Indoor plants need at least 6 hours of sunlight daily (or grow lights) in order to prosper. Outdoor plants prefer a warm exposure
with full sun and rich, moist soil. Planting

When we learn something new about growing and using herbs, or tending and
cooking vegetables, or if we hatch some new poetry, or have an inspirational
idea, all this shows up on our Facebook page, which is updated DAILY.
Some people give us feedback that it is lke a free correspondence course
in gardening and herbalism. Others appreciate our posts for the photos. It
helps us to be closer to what we have in commonour love of gardening. We
welcome you to join us there!
