Career paths for Obstetrics & Gynecologist

Ob/Gyn is just not related to just child birth only, which is too an important experience in the life
of a woman. But Ob/Gyn is slightly more than that, if you choose that as a career for yourself
you will find focusing yourself in improving womens health at all of her lifes stages.

The most prior degree in this field is of MRCOG which is considered to be as the Gold standard
degree

in this career path. MRCOG is divided into

two

parts and in future 3 which will be more


relaxing to the candidates.

Exam Format
MRCOG Part 1 exam is written based Exam that
you can give at any time soon after your
graduation but it is advised to at least prepare
for 6 months after your graduation and then
apply

for that. The exam centers are established in 30


countries and you have liberty to have exam
centre you choose it to be. From new spring
session that is in March 2015 you have 2

written based exams, each one comprising 100 SBAs and lasting 2.30 hours.

MRCOG SBAs

In SBAs weve now 1-100 questions earlier it was from 1-60. The statement is followed by five
options, it will be beneficial for you to read the statement for each option and then opt for the
answer. The Sample question for SBAs is given below
Question 1: A 24-year-old presents at 27 weeks into her second pregnancy feeling unwell, with
backache, fever and rigors. She has a temperature of 39.5C. Urinalysis shows leucocytes and
protein +++. Her blood pressure is 80/50. Which action is most appropriate?
A. Admit to ICU/HDU for intravenous antibiotics and supportive care
B. Arrange ultrasound of renal tract
C. Commence 7-day course of oral antibiotics
D. Give intramuscular steroids to promote fetal lung maturity
E. Make referral for physicians to review
Question 2: A woman presents with a short history of vaginal spotting and cramping abdominal
pain after 7 weeks of amenorrhoea. A few days earlier she had a positive result on a home
pregnancy test. The cervix is closed on examination. An ultrasound scan shows an intrauterine
gestational sac. A fetal pole with cardiac activity is seen.
What is the most likely diagnosis?
A. Complete miscarriage
B. Incomplete miscarriage
C. Inevitable miscarriage
D. Septic miscarriage
E. Threatened miscarriage

Youve to mark the answers in the answer book make sure you refer it correctly as for your ease
the options are stated in numerical or alphabetical order to avoid confusion. There is no negative
marking in the paper, so you can perform each question. Do not mark two answers for 1 question
as it will not be assessed then even if one of the options is true.
From spring session, each paper will contribute the same portion of marks to the overall total.
The distribution of marks along the subject varies from sitting to sitting. A typical distribution is
shown below, so that you have the idea that how much you have to prepare from a particular
subject.

Rules & Regulations


The exam will remain valid for 7 years, for the candidates who have passed MRCOG part 1
exam after March 2013. That eventually means that if that period expires the candidate have to re
sit in the original exam.
Candidates, who passed that exam in or before March 2013, need to attempt MRCOG part 2
within 10 years, where there are no restrictions on the period to attempt part 2 exam.
Candidates, who are not wishing to enter in UK
specialty

register, have to pass the part 2 within 10 years,

plus there

is limitation in the number of attempts in that.
