I
have
mentioned
writing
up
this
thread
for
sometime,
and
it
has
taken
a
while
because
I
wanted
to
try
multiple
ideas
and
to
make
sure
I
demonstrated
the
simplest
technique
to
you
guys.
This
is
that
technique.
What
we
will
be
accomplishing
is
an
installation
of
Windows
(I
used
win8,
you
can
use
whatever
you
like)
without
the
use
of
an
optical
drive
at
any
point
on
an
intel
based
MacBook
(Core2Duo+
recommended).
In
the
end,
you
will
have
mac
installed
on
one
drive,
and
windows
installed
in
the
other
with
a
simple
bootcamp
interface
for
dual
booting.
But
getting
to
that
stage
has
a
few
prerequisites.
I
shall
explain
them
now.
Prerequisites
Hardware
Prerequisites;
A
USB
stick
-
8gb
minimum
(pick
a
fast
one
if
possible)
A
PC
running
Windows
(7/8)
-
(or
parallels
running
windows
7/8
configured
to
take
full
control
of
USB's)
Your
mac
OS
already
installed
and
running
in
the
hard
drive
bay
(SATA0)
Your
HDD
you
want
to
install
windows
on,
installed
in
it's
OptiBay
(SATA1)
and
formatted
to
MacOS
Journaled
(Disk
Utility
is
fine
for
this)
Appropriate
screwdrivers
to
open
your
Mac
(yes,
you
will
have
to
open
it
for
this
process,
even
after
installing
the
drives)
Software
Prerequisites;
Windows
ISO
-
Whatever
build
you
want,
in
the
correct
architecture
for
your
mac
(I
use
win8
Pro
x64)
YUMI
0.0.8.3
(or
higher)
-
This
is
windows
only
software,
so
run
this
on
your
PC
or
in
your
parallels
VM
Disk
Utility
Toast
Titanium
10
(or
higher)
Bootcamp
software
and
the
latest
drivers
for
Windows
Disclaimer
Now,
if
you
can
tick
all
of
those
boxes
(and
no,
none
can
be
skipped)
then
you
are
ready
to
proceed
into
this
tutorial.
I
will
give
a
warning
before
starting
however,
this
process
involves
many
techniques
not
designed
to
work
on
MacBook's,
they
worked
for
me
but
i
offer
no
promise
that
they
will
for
you.
So
if
something
should
go
wrong,
it
is
your
responsibility,
and
yours
alone.
I
am
writing
this
as
my
account
and
as
an
outline
to
assist
others
attempting
the
same
goal.
Ready?
Not
scared
off?
Well
if
you're
sure,
let's
go!
After
this
is
partitioned,
it's
time
to
move
over
to
your
PC
(or
Parallels)
and
restore
your
Windows
ISO
to
a
USB
stick.
Now,
most
guides
I
came
across
recommended
the
"Windows
7
USB/DVD
Download
Tool"
and
you
too
are
welcome
to
try
it.
I
however,
found
that
it
will
only
work
on
a
mac
for
x32
ISO
files
(Not
on
x64)
so
I
wanted
this
guide
to
be
universal
for
any
of
us,
so
the
tool
of
choice
I
recommend
is
called
YUMI.
YUMI
download
available
HERE
YUMI
is
a
small
iteration
of
pen-drive-linux
and
will
allow
us
a
x32
bootloader
that
will
then
go
on
to
load
x32
OR
x64
installation
files.
This
is
the
key
to
bypassing
the
x64
installation
issue,
and
here
is
how
to
configure
it.
Download
it
from
the
website
as
pictured
below
Insert
your
8GB+
USB
stick
into
your
PC/Parallels
(with
full
usb
control)
and
then
open
up
YUMI.
You
will
then
need
to
select
your
USB
drive
in
step
1
of
the
software,
and
make
sure
you
tick
the
"Format"
option
following
it.
Be
very
careful
you
select
the
right
drive
to
prevent
accidental
formatting
of
important
data.
Then
in
step
2,
scroll
down
to
"Windows
Vista/7/8
Installer"
and
select
it,
then
in
step
3
of
YUMI,
select
your
windows
ISO
file.
As
pictured
below
Once
this
is
set
up,
press
next
and
let
it
do
it's
thing!
It
could
take
upwards
of
10-15
minutes
depending
on
the
speed
of
your
drive.
So
lets
use
this
time
to
finnish
the
prep
work
on
the
MacBook!
Now,
if
you
open
Bootcamp
at
this
point,
it
will
throw
an
error
and
tell
you
that
it
can't
install
without
an
optical
drive.
Pictured
below
It's
important
I
stress,
this
is
normal.
This
error
is
part
of
the
problem
with
this
process
and
why
this
tutorial
is
useful.
So
let's
close
out
of
it
for
now,
and
get
around
this
issue.
So,
logical
thinking
dictates
that
if
we
can't
have
a
physical
disk
and
that
not
having
one
in
causes
an
error,
can't
we
just
mount
the
ISO?
Well,
yes
and
no.
if
you
copy
your
ISO
file
onto
your
mac,
double
click
and
mount
it,
you
will
get
no
further.
Bootcamp
can
tell
if
you're
trying
to
fake
it
however,
bootcamp
isn't
smart
enough
to
tell
if
we're
faking
it
using
non-apple
software.
So,
using
the
Toast
Titanium
installation
you've
updated
earlier,
navigate
to
your
ISO,
right
click
(secondary
mouse
button)
navigate
to
"services"
(at
the
bottom)
then
click
"Mount
It".
Pictured
Below
If
not,
check
the
steps
so
far
to
make
sure
you
have
followed
them
correctly.
Then
re-do
any
mistakes.
If
it
has
worked,
click
continue
and
you
will
be
asked
if
you
want
to
"Download
the
latest
support
software
from
apple"
and
if
you
want
to
"Install
or
remove
windows
7"
tick
both,
download
the
software
to
somewhere
Once
you
click
next,
it
will
run
through
the
format/partition
and
then
before
you
restart
your
MacBook,
make
sure
the
YUMI
process
has
entirely
completed
and
once
it
has,
remove
the
USB
and
plug
it
into
your
MacBook
(any
USB
port
will
work).
At
this
point,
you
are
done
with
all
preparations
and
are
ready
to
move
onto
the
actual
process
of
booting
from
the
USB.
As
you
can
see
from
that
photo,
simply
disconnect
that
SATA
ribbon
cable
and
then
flip
your
macbook
back
over,
and
place
the
bottom
pannel
on
(don't
bother
screwing
it
on
-
you'll
want
to
re-attach
that
soon).
Now,
the
reason
behind
doing
this,
is
to
beat
an
error
message
that
would
otherwise
have
cropped
up
in
the
next
phase.
This
is
an
error
caused
by
Bootcamp
only
allowing
installs
of
windows
to
a
partition
of
the
Primary
HDD.
This
is
unaffected
by
weather
you
have
MacOS
on
the
drive
in
the
OptiBay
or
in
the
HDD
bay,
but
simply
by
Bootcamp
identifying
it
as
a
secondary
drive.
This
error
(when
seen)
can
not
be
passed
you
would
have
to
go
through
this
process
of
disconnecting
the
HDD
for
MacOS
sooner
or
later,
so
let's
be
ahead
of
the
process
and
speed
things
up.
Once
you
have
put
your
MacBook
right-side-up,
plug
in
the
magsafe
charger
again,
and
make
sure
the
USB
is
in
then
turn
on.
You
will
have
to
wait
at
least
20-30
seconds
before
any
signes
of
life.
Don't
worry,
this
is
normal.
But
you
will
be
rewarded
eventually
with
the
YUMI
start
screen.
Pictured
below
Then
after
clicking
Enter,
you
will
be
greeted
with
this
screen
After
again
pressing
enter
on
this
screen,
you
will
proceed
to
the
installation
of
windows!
this
is
the
first
time
you
will
see
the
fruits
of
your
labour,
so
pat
yourself
on
the
back
Now,
after
some
time
(again,
you'll
have
to
wait
a
few
seconds)
the
windows
install
window
will
pop
up
as
pictured
below.
This
is
where
you
will
have
o
select
your
drives,
and
if
(as
specified
earlier)
you
removed
the
MacOS
HDD,
it
will
allow
you
to
format
the
partition
you
named
obviously
in
the
prep
phase,
to
NTFS,
then
click
next
to
begin
the
windows
install!
As
pictured
below
Now
you
have
earned
yourself
a
rest!
let
it
do
it's
thing
and
go
have
yourself
a
cup
of
tea
or
something.
Installs
from
YUMI
USB's
are
not
quick,
I
used
a
fast
USB
and
it
still
took
ages.
But
don't
worry,
it
will
be
doing
it's
thing.
Slowly-but-surely.
Just
make
sure
you've
put
in
your
Serial
and
selected
your
native
language
then
eventually,
after
a
reboot
or
two
(remember,
on
ALL
reboots,
hold
the
option
key
down
and
select
the
windows
drive
to
boot
from
as
you
only
need
the
files
from
the
YUMI
USB
the
first
time
(but
do
leave
it
in
)
Now,
with
a
little
luck
you
should
have
a
successful
install
and
you
should
be
greeted
with
the
"Select
your
theme"
screen
on
windows
8.
As
pictured
below
Now,
going
through
the
activation
process
is
up
to
you,
and
if
you
need
advice/assistance
on
where
to
look
for
serials
if
you
don't
legally
own
your
own,
PM
me
and
if
enough
of
you
are
interested
I
will
make
a
thread
on
the
topic.
(Yes
i
know
windows
is
in
a
different
font,
it
was
every
time
I
tried
this...
no
idea
why,
dosen't
seem
to
matter)
You
are
done
make sure you install the windows utilities you downloaded earlier (you may need to put
them
on
a
USB
stick
to
see
them)
but
all
in
all,
you've
done
it
be proud!
Well
Done!
If
this
tutorial
worked
for
you,
a
thanks
is
appreciated
(it
took
DAYS
to
sort
out)
and
if
you
have
any
issues
please
ask
and
I
(or
someone
else)
I'm
sure
will
be
glad
to
assist.
Please
remember,
I
did
all
of
this
with
a
Mid
2009
Macbook
Pro.
Any
other
years
model
may
require
different
techniques,
but
I
believe
this
should
be
fairly
generic
for
most
of
you.
If
you
read
this
far
(not
sure
i
would
have!)
thanks
from
me
