Maestro- The Best Manager Prelim 1

1. Considering the fact that I am a human being, and humans are primates, I am the most
intelligent primate in the farmhouse.
It is assumed here that as in the real world, humans are more intelligent that the other
primates mentioned in the question.

3. The stranger's suggestion made them race cars at maximum speeds, but whose car, is not
specified. Considering the terms of the bet remained the same, my hypothesis is that they
raced each other's cards.
The initial bet was the person to reach last would win. However, if the opposite cars are
raced, the car reaching first will be lose, and that is exactly what the driver of the opposite
car would want, i.e. his opponent's car to lose.
However, technically speaking, the question states that the bet is "the person reaching last
would keep both cars." In such a case, the hypothesized answer stands invalid, because
cars are independent of persons. This, I presume is a minute fallacy in the question itself.
Considering the above scenario, I'd say that the stranger's suggestion was them to race
each others' cars.
(Or possibly it was another suggestion which made ultimately made them realize that they
could do this (i.e. not stating the solution explicitly), as the faster the person realized the
suggestion, the faster would he go to his opponent's car. Eg. Indirectly hinting them that
they're sitting in front of each others' keys, and what could be an implication of that.
However, such indirect suggestions can be many, and enumerating those is impractical)
4. $ 12.235 billion
5. Let's start with the total number of constituencies in the country as 550. From this, we
need to subtract the number of constituencies where BP did not contest. However,
considering BJP's stature of a national party, I'd say that the same is negligible.
Now, let's assume that the population of each constituency is the same. (This can be
roughly justified stating that Delhi NCT's population is 16 million, across 7 constituencies.
Per constituency this makes 2.28 million people, and 2.28x 550 = 1254 million i.e. 1.25
billion, nearly equal to India's population)
Now, let's divide all constituencies into 3 parts. A, B and C, based on the socio
economic status of the majority people in such cities.
A will be the constituencies from tier 1 cities, B from tier 2, and C from tier 3 and villages.
Firstly, let's estimate the number of A constituencies.

Tier 1 cities will be Delhi+NCR(7+1), Mumbai(7), Bangalore(4), Chennai(3), Kolkata(6),

Chandigarh(1) and Ahmadabad(3) to make a total of 32 constituencies.
Now, it is difficult to estimate the number of B and C constituencies, but let's assume that
the number of constituencies will follow a geometric pattern, as the number will rise
significantly as one goes down the income groups. Hence, there are 114 B
constituencies, and 404 C constituencies.
Now, let the number of posters per constituency in the same group be the same (as they
have the same socio economic and infrastructure development).
Also, if the number of posters per A constituency is 100%, for B it will be only
60%, and for C it will be 20%. This has been assumed so because as you go to a smaller
constituency, the paper expenditure for posters tends to decrease because of lower
population densities, lower access to bulk printing, and cheaper alternatives such as
manual wall painting for campaigning and a more personal approach to voters.
Finally, we assume that posters are independent of the final outcome i.e. whether or not
the candidate finally won the elections.
Now, let's estimate the number of posters for one constituency of Delhi, and then
it's a matter of simple arithmetic to arrive at the actual answer.
In one constituency of Delhi, there would be about 5 markets of considerable size where
posters are pasted on walls (Malls and developed shopping centers ignored).
In case of Chandni Chowk, say there would be about 50 walls (along footpaths) of
prominent importance as far as posters are concerned ( the actual number might be more,
but they have been discounted, and the these walls will be assumed to be fully covered
with posters, hence offsetting the 2 situations.) Considering the average wall size to be
20x10 feet, and the average poster to be 2x2 feet, there can be 50 posters on each
wall. However, these will have other party posters as well. Say there is a 40% BJP + 40%
Congress +20% Regional split. This means that there will be 20 posters per wall of BJP,
making 1000x5= 5000 posters in markets in a constituency.
Apart from this, there will be posters in residential areas. For one constituency, there will
be 2.28 million people (calculated earlier) and assuming average household to be of 4
people in Delhi, there will be approximately 5 lakh households per constituency. Assuming
most of these are apartment houses in groups of 200 per colony, we have 2500 colonies in
Delhi, and if each colony has 5 entrances, and at each entrance are 25 posters (inclusive of
entrance + nearby road ), assuming the 40-40-20 rule, BJP will have 10 posters per entry,
making 25000 posters near houses (these however, will be smaller in size)
Total, we arrive at 30000 posters per constituency. There will be other posters along roads
and micellaneous areas (Say metro pillars in Delhi). Let's inflate the figure by 30% for these
unaccounted posters to arrive at 40,000 posters in a Delhi constituency.
Thus,
A cities will have 40,000x 32 = 12,80,000 posters
B cities will have 40,000x 114x 60%= 27,36,000 posters
C cities will have 40,000x 404x 20%= 32,32,000 posters
This makes a total of approximately 72,48,000 posters across the country. However, the
550 constituencies taken are for NDA (wrongly assumed earlier). If 70% of NDA
candidates are from BJP, the required proportionate answer is 50,00,000 posters
in one cycle of posters.
If posters are re-put up every month leading up to the elections, and the election frenzy is
for 3 months, the total posters put up will be 15,000,000 i.e. 15 million posters.

6.

Not only do I know the demand patterns from mine and my peers' lives, I am well
aware of what your current and potential customers want, the quality they expect, how it
should to sold to them, and what promotion appeals the most to them. Possessing a
business degree and fantastic social skills, finance and HR won't be a problem either.
Other candidates may have years' of experience, but it came the cost of an innovative
attitude, which a youth brand cannot afford to lose. I have a vision for this company. To
pave a path for it and make it the
choice of a guy and the pleasure of a girl. I see us as trend setters. As market leaders. Can
I do it? Oh Yeah.

7. No. This ban is not justified.

The rationale behind banning child labour is to promote education and let the little lives
have a childhood worth living, but in case of lack of any educational access, there won't be
a childhood anyway. Then what's the point of this radical measure.
Let us explore 2 scenarios. One, where there's not education opportunities, and a ban on
child labour exits. Second, where the ban doesn't exist.
In the first scenario, the child won't contribute to the family income, and will only be a
financial burden. On coming of age, he won't have any skills he could've gained in his early
years, and will contribute low to the family income. He won't be able to sustain his family,
and the social structure in such an income group will collapse. In the second scenario, the
difference will be that the child will be stuck in a never ending repeating cycle, and though
his situation will never improve, it will never deteriorate either.
The solution will be that instead of adopting a radical approach, firstly ensure education
opportunities for the country's children, and discourage child labour. These can happen
simultaneously. As the education is developed, only then can a smooth transition made,
and a prospective ban on child labour can be considered.
Agreed that child labour is horrible, but what would you prefer. A child working, or a child
dying of hunger?
8. Being unemployed (fired during the recession inspite of being an IIM Calcutta graduate),
coming into money won't boost the economy and give me a job, irrespective of what Modiji
says. The way to go will be entrepreneurship. However, before I dive into that, there are
certain issues I must address ASAP.
Firstly, I'll hire a lawyer to look into the legal aspects of the possession of this money.
Considering it's safe, I might need to bribe news channels/newspapers to not leak the
news. Who knows when the true owner will turn up. Let's say all this costs 5 lakh rupees.
Get money exchanged from dollars and pay the lawyer and journalists.
Now. Out of the remaining money, 100,000 dollars won't be exchanged back to rupees.
They'll be converted into Swiss Francs. I'll explain this part in the end. Out of the 900,000
dollars, i.e. 5,40,00,000 minus 5,00,000 i.e. 5,35,00,000 are available.
35 lakhs for home renovation
20 lakhs for mother's arthiritis operation
10 lakhs for personal car (i may find cheques in trains, but i'll prefer a car. thank you very
much)
50 lakhs for sister's marriage fund
20 lakhs for daughter's future education , invested in a fixed deposit
Considering I do not have any lawsuits against me, and I do not want to indulge in spoiling
my kid, or gambling, or hookers/ strip clubs ( I love my wife a lot), I have taken care of the
immediate needs of my family, and have 4 crores left.
I'll divide this into 2+2 crores for business and charity.

In the 2 crores for business, 1 crore will be spread across investments across countries and
asset classes to reduce the possibility of systematic risks as much as possible. The other 1
crore will be invested in my dream of starting up a bitcoin based startup, which will operate
as a brokerage and trading platform in the internet currency.
Considering the fact that I have a sound business plan and diversified investments, I'll use
the remaining 2 crores for charity. I'll divide it into 5 groups of 40 lakhs each to be donated
to education based NGOs in Mumbai and India; Teach for India (teachforindia.org), Make a
Difference( makeadiff.in), Pratham (pratham.org), Barefoot College India
(barefootcollege.org) and CRY (cry.org). These 40 lakhs each won't be given right away, but
spread over 10 years, and after due verification that the money being donated is being
used well. Until donated, it'll be invested in a fixed deposit.
Finally, coming back to the 100,000 dollars. Il get a secret safe made in our ancestral home
during the renovation, wherein this money will be kept safely, and no one apart from me
and my wife will be privy to it. This is for a rainy day, off the books, and away from the
knowledge of authorities. Also, it is in Swiss Francs as Switzerland is the world's safest
economy. They have never been at war, and the chances of this currency depreciating is
negligible.
