Building Torat Yisrael’s Future

Building From the Inside, Too
In the last few months, this column has concentrated almost exclusively on our building
project in East Greenwich. We celebrated our November groundbreaking in an inspiring
ceremony and reception, and we’ve moved on to identify a company to begin the site
work required to begin the construction of our new synagogue building in the spring.
But a congregation is much more than a building, it is a collection of people who are
organized around shared values, vision and a sense of community. Our families and our friends enrich our
lives with warmth, joy and care. The extended family of a Jewish congregation should do all that and
more.
We are building our sense of community, of mutual caring and support, through a newly organized
committee: Yad B’Yad: Hand in Hand is our Torat Yisrael Caring Committee. People involved in Yad B’Yad
will be sending Torat Yisrael members get well cards, birthday cards, and anniversary cards. We’ll also
make calls to people in our congregation who are home alone most of the time and we’ll be offering rides
to members of our congregation who are not able to drive themselves to our services and programs.
We thank board member Marcia Slobin for volunteering to send good wishes for healing on behalf of all of
us to those of us who are ill. If you know someone in our congregation who is under the weather, or
struggling with serious illness, please leave a message for Marcia at the TY office (785-1800).
If you would like to extend a loving hand to our community through Yad B’Yad: Hand in Hand, you can
sign up on the Members’ Page of our TY website (www.toratyisrael.org) or you can contact our President,
Susan Smoller by leaving her a message at the TY office: 785-1800.
We’ve also included a sign-up form in this newsletter.
Let’s build our Torat Yisrael community from the inside, as well as the outside!

The Cohen School News
At the end of February, we
celebrate the holiday of Purim. February Calendar
When our oldest child was very 2 Regular Classes
young, Purim was the very first 6 Shabbat Yachad
holiday we celebrated together at 7 No School
the synagogue. She was a fidgety 9 Regular Classes
curious child who had a great deal of difficulty 14 No Classes
sitting still. On Purim, we thought, her 16 No Classes
questions, singing, humming, seat-shifting and 21 Regular Classes, Torat Tots
tapping won’t matter. We were correct! Dressed 23 Regular Classes
in her clown costume, noisemaker in hand, Ilana 27 Purim Megillah Reading and Party
accompanied her dad, grandparents and I into 28 Regular Classes beginning at 10:00
the sanctuary. There, she sat quietly…sort
of…through a brief evening service, anticipating March Calendar
the fun to come. In just a few minutes, the 2 Regular Classes
reading of the Megillah would begin along with 6 Shabbat Yachad
songs, parodies and even a few jokes! 7 No Classes
Throughout the years, as our family grew, each 9 Regular Classes
child experienced Purim as his/her first 14 Regular Classes
synagogue outing. In fact, I am certain that my 16 Regular Classes
children began to feel at home at Temple Torat 21 Regular Classes
Yisrael because their first experiences there were 23 Regular Classes
so family-friendly. Please join your Torat Yisrael 26 Simchat Shabbat
family this Purim for a fun-loving holiday 28 Regular Classes

Dance! Sing! Taste the hamentashen, and
celebrate with your extended family.

Librarian’s Corner by Laura Steele, Torat Yisrael Librarian

Healthy Cooking for the Jewish Home by Faye Levy

You may have noticed my predilection for cookbooks and I have added two great additions to our library
collection.

With an eye toward starting the New Year off on a more healthy foot, I will introduce you to Healthy
Cooking for the Jewish Home by Faye Levy. Healthy hasn’t typically been an adjective usually paired with
Jewish cooking, but Levy puts a distinctive California spin on notoriously rich recipes to make them
palatable to the waistline conscious. In addition to lightening classics like cholent and kugel, Levy features
many Ashkephardic fusion dishes where the healthier (Sephardic) cooking traditions restore flavor when it
is lost in the slimming down of east European Jewish (Ashkenazi) recipes. Hearty buckwheat blintzes are
filled with goat cheese and ratatouille; turkey schnitzel is served over an Alsatian sweet-sour onion
compote. Elsewhere Levy livens things up by adding New World and East Asian ingredients to old
standbys, making an Israeli salad pop with pepitas and papaya, and accompanying potato latkes for
Hannukah with baked tofu in sweet-and-sour ginger sauce. The book's first half progresses through the
year's main holidays, from Rosh Hashanah to Shavuot, providing a dozen or so modernized recipes for
each.; the second half features dishes for separate courses, almost all venturing far afield from
stereotypical Jewish food so that they could almost be from any cookbook. As a help to all of us, Levy
focuses on recipes' nutritional aspects. Anyone who has despaired of being able to reconcile healthy
eating with hearty, comforting Jewish favorites will be thrilled at Levy's demonstrations of the
contemporary possibilities for the cuisine.

I have begun to try some of the recipes and am eager to try more. I encourage you to come into the
Library and see all of the new additions to our collection.
