In 2006, he moved to Germany to continue his flute studies at

the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Dsseldorf, studying with
Michael Faust and Andr Sebald and graduating with honors.
Since arriving in Europe, he has performed and premiered
works by several Peruvian composers in a number of German
cities, as well as in Lithuania and Latvia. Additionally, he has
had the chance to work closely with and premiere works by
composers from several other countries, such as Germany,
Spain, Korea, Russia, Latvia, Armenia and Iran.

As a composer himself, Daniel is especially interested in

exploring the innate possibilities and complexities of the

rediscover and reconfigure the relationship between Western
and non-Western elements in the music of his country, striving
to developan artistic language that is richly influenced by
contrasting yet equally ancient heritages.

Prisma
Commentary by the composer

Comentarios del autor

Prisma is strongly influenced by Andean popular music. It is

based on pentatonic scales, and includes a middle section in
the rhythm of a huayno one of the oldest and most popular
musical genres in the Americas.

Prisma is the Spanish word for prism, a device which can be

used to dispersewhite light into the colors of the rainbow.

Prisma is the clear light of a flute unfolding into a flourish of

Andean color.

colores andinos.

: breath sound (no tone)

The rhythmic figures that are written using this notehead
(starting at bar 49) imitate the typical rhythmic pattern of the
charango (a traditional small guitar-like instrument) in huayno
music. The syllables to be tongued are written on top of the
staff. The small rests that are embedded in the pattern are an
essential part of its flow. These rests will occasionally have
breath marks over them, in which case our inhalation
becomes part of the rhythmical feel of the huayno.

Towards the end of the piece, as is marked in the score, the

flutist will slowly turn around and walk off the stage while still
playing. He or she will continue playing for a while off-stage,
repeating or varying freely on the same motifs, ignoring any
applause if it comes while the flute can still be heard. Getting
farther and farther away, the flutist will stop playing when the
flutes sound has completely faded out from the stage. Then
he or she may return for the applause.

escenario. Entonces podr volver por los aplausos.
