Problem 1
Consider the 3-element bar model shown in Figure 1-1.
The geometrical and material data are given in Figure 1-2.
The applied loading are: Concentrated force of 100 lb at 10 inch from
point A,and a distributed load that varies from 10 lb/1n to 100 lb/in
from B to C Use finite element method (long hand calculation)
Find the following quantities:
(a) nodal displacements
(b) reaction forces
(c) Draw a free body diagram of the bar, showing all
applied loads and reactions and show that the forces are in
equilibrium.
(d) What is the displacement at point Q which is at
middle of points C and D

Problem 2
Part A:
Consider the 16 member truss model shown in Figure 2-1.
The truss member are made of steel with E=3e7 psi. The cross sectional
areas of members CH and HI are 4 in^2. All other members are 2 in^2;
The loading at points B,C,D,F,G,and I are:
P, 2P, P,2P,2P and 4P in the direction shown, and P=2000 lb,
Joints A and E are pinned and the nodal coordinates can be obtained from
Figure 2-1. All dimensions are in inches.
(1)
Find nodal displacements and element stresses and reactions by
MASTRAN.
(2)
Show a free body of the truss with all applied loading and
reactions and show that these forces are in equilibrium.
(3)
Show equilibrium of joint F.
Part B;
Since the model of Figure 2-1 is symmetrical about the line IHC, we may
take advantage of this to solve the problem with a model with 9 elements.
Solve this model by MASTRAN and compare the solutions with Part A.

Problem 3
The simply supported beam shown in Figure 3-1 has a length of 25 inch.
The beam is subject to a downward distributed load that varies linearly
from A to B with load intensities 0 and 10 lb/in respectively. The beam
is made of steel with E=3e7 psi. The beam has circular cross section with
a 2 inch diameter.
Find deflection at point Q (at the middle of the beam)
and reactions by finite element model
(a)
(b)
(c)

Use a 1-element model, by long hand calculation.

Solve the problem use a 2-element model by MASTRAN
Solve the beam deflection analytically(**) and compare the
rotations, reactions and deflection at point Q with the FE
solutions.

** Find the beam deflection by solving beam deflection differential

equation. Look for beam defection differential equation if you do not
rember it.

Problem 4
The simply supported beam shown in Figure 4-1 has a length of 45 inch.
The beam is subject to a distributed load that varies linearly from A to
B with intensities 0 and 10 lb/in respectively. The beam is made of
steel with E=3e7 psi.
(a)
Find the deflection at point Q(at x=12.5) use a 2-element model
by MASTRAN. (If you solved the problem long hand use 1-element
model, its OK too)
(b)
Find deflection at Q use a 10element model by MASTRAN.
