Summary

The fourth year Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering students during summer
vacation were required to undergo an on-the-job training in any company or organization which is
really much related to their chosen field of interest with a minimum of two hundred forty hours. It
was April 11, 2013 since the trainee has started internship or the so-called on-the-job training. He
went through the Philippine Information Agency in which the Philippine Broadcasting Service is
located. Ms. Marivic Cusi, the HR staff or one of the Training Supervisor lead and take him in the
Radyo Magasin : 1278kHz , wherein he will be assigned as a Technicians assistant in the Master
Control Room until he finished the required hours of OJT.
The main goal of the trainee is to gain information and experiences in the field of technical
works behind the world of radio broadcasting as a springboard for future employment. The
assigned technicians molded the trainee to become independent in performing the assigned tasks
efficiently, learn to carry out the operation properly, experience to be a professional and adjust to
the new environment. The technicians taught the trainee about the equipments used in the
operation such as the console, rack (patch field) and computers. As a result, the trainee learned to
adjust the volumes at the station and the natural sound that airs from the radio of the listeners or
receivers, connect the reporter from other area to the station via phone patch, connecting the said
station or simply hooking up to the Mother Station, Radyo ng Bayan : 738kHz, connect or
disconnect the said station in the anchors booth, rip cds that were going to play at exact time, and
at the same time by connecting the ripped songs into the console so it will air accordingly, record a
live program and took time to edit the recordings by the Adobe audition and simultaneously log and
record the time in which any segment or program aired. The trainee realized to thoroughly use the
sense of hearing as it plays a role to obtain a better broadcast of a program.
After a month of training and real technical works exposure, the trainee is equipped with
the skills that were learned in the four corners of the Control room and his intellectual progress and
knowledge towards technology were heightened. The trainees perseverance made his personality
whole that he may be ready for better potential careers. Furthermore, the training provides a
glimpse in technical works which the trainee could apply in the future.

Introduction

Everything is always created twice, first in the mind and then in reality.
5

The knowledge of a student gained from the college professors are not enough when only
learned by pure imagination. That is why an internship or the so-called OJT ( On-the-Job Training)
is created. This serves as a way that gives students a chance to apply the lessons learned from the
school. It also aids the students to achieve relevant knowledge and skills through the actual
experience in working in the field of their profession. Thus, the workplace and the field serve as a
new venue of learning for the student.
On-the-job training is valuable where realism is essential. Students are required to
complete such hours of training. It is a particularly good way of developing technical skills and
expertise. During on-the-job training, a supervisor guides the trainee through tasks and processes
for them to know how to perform the obligation and to what standard. Typically, the supervisor
observes the trainees while they perform their duties. After observation, the observer provides the
trainees with feedback on their performance.
It is so beneficial for a company or an organization who willingly accept a student trainee
because an OJT program provides them additional manpower without expecting salary to pay
back. Student trainees can bring fresh ideas, and if even given such opportunity to speak their
minds freely, they maybe able to contribute significantly in brainstorming sessions that will possibly
help for the productivity of the company.
As for the OJT program for Electronics Engineering, the students would be trained
technically in their chosen field of interest. This provides opportunities to go through the actual
methodologies of a specific job using real tools, equipments and documents. The trainee will also
practice the ability in troubleshooting. In effect, this will certainly lead them for their professional
growth and development.
Generally, OJT program is a necessity for every student who wants to be educated
technically by the lessons they learned in the past by means of using equipments actually. Truly , it
takes an experience to enhance professionalism.

Objectives

In line with the goal of the OJT program to provide highly competent and competitive
professionals responsive to the needs of dynamic environment, the student trainee aims to:

1. To achieve a grasp of the nature, significance, or explanation behind the world of

Electronics Engineering, primarily in the field of Communication.

2. To gain experiences, relate and apply the theories and principles learned from school to
real workplace situations and problems.

3. To handle a task with dynamic responsibility that will certainly build self-confidence and self
motivation in professional growth.

4. To assists individuals in developing professional and interpersonal relationship necessary

for success in the workplace.

5. To keen knowledge and experience for future employment.

History

During World War II, the US office of war Information set up a radio station with call letters
KZSO inside a US navy submarine with the intention of sending messages and updated
information on the progress of the war against Japan. The station played a vital role and
contributed largely to the early occupation of the Philippines by the US armed forces.
This 50-watt portable radio station later found its way to the Philippines when USAFFE
soldiers landed in Lingayen Gulf during the first week of February 1945. KZSO was alongside the
American soldiers as they reached Manila. A makeshift studio was thereafter constructed in an old
warehouse of Carmelo and Bauermann on Azcarraga St. (now Claro M. Recto), beside the Far
Eastern University. The following year, KZSO-renamed KZFM-temporarily moved to the Ramon
Roces Building on Soler St. in Sta. Cruz, Manila until it was turned over to the to the Philippine
Government-under the Department of Foreign Affairs in September 1946.
The Radio Broadcasting Board, created on September 12, 1947, took charge of the
administration and operation of KZFM, which transferred its studios to the fourth floor of the Manila
City Hall building on Taft Avenue. On January 1, 1952, the Board was abolished. In its place was
established the Philippine Information Council. In compliance with a resolution approved in the
International Telecommunication Conference in Atlantic City, USA, all radio stations in the
Philippines would adopt the letter D as the first letter of its call letters. Thus KZRM became
DZFM. On July 1, 1952, the Philippine Information Council was abolished and consequently, DZFM
was placed under the Office of the President in Malacaang.
DZFM acquired a new 10kilowatt transmitter in 1958. The old 5 kilowatt was used to
established a sister station, later known as DZRM, together with the short-wave stations DUH2 and
DUB4. Thereafter, it was therefore necessary to adopt a new name for the mother entity of the
radio stations, which gave birth to the umbrella organization called the Philippine Broadcasting
Service (PBS).
In the 60s, provincial stations were established to augment the operational coverage of
PBS. During this period, DZEQ Baguio, DYMR Cebu, and DXRP Davao came into being, together
with other relay stations including DZMQ Dagupan. Other AM stations were likewise established in
8

Manila including DZCP, where the entire congressional deliberations were aired. The mid-60s also
saw the establishment of a television station under PBS using channel 10 for its telecast.
When Martial Law was declared in 1972, PBS was abolishe. On January 1, 1973, it was
resurrected as Bureau of Broadcast (BB) under the Department of Public Information.
Meanwhile, another government entity the National media Production Center (NMPC)
acquired the facilities of the voice of America in Malolos, Bulacan in 1969. The NMPC operated the
Voice of the Philippines (VOP) on both medium wave-918 kHz and short-wave 9,910 mhz
transmissions. In 1980 the NMPC obtained DWIM-FM (presently DWBR) 104.4 MHz.
The BB and the NMPC were brought under one administrative roof in 1980 when the
Office of Media Affairs (OMA) was created to provide a loose union for both networks within the
ABS-CBN complex in Bohol Avenue, Quezon City.
After the peaceful 1986 EDSA Revolution, the OMA, NMPC and BB were abolished. In
their stead came the Bureau of Broadcast Services (BBS).
At present, PBS-BBS owns and operates radio stations nationwide with DZRB Radyo ng
Bayan Manila as its flagship station.

Bureau of Broadcast Services

A Profile

The Bureau of Broadcast services (BBS), was formally created in July 1987, the result of
the consolidation of the broadcast facilities, resources and functions of three agencies earlier
abolished, namely; the Office of the Media Affairs, the national Media Production Center of the
Office of the President and, the Bureau of Broadcast of the Ministry of Public Information. The BBS
was organizes under the guidelines set by the Aquino Administration. The process involved a
complete rethinking of objectives and overhauling of various offices, strengthening of capabilities,
and the tightening of the manpower complement to the barest minimum.
The result is a compact and dynamic BBS with each employee fitting into an essential role
in his own unit, and each unit an integral part of a communications network dedicated to provide
accurate and objective information to its audiences and to undertake a communication strategy to
bring the government closer to the people.
The Bureau of Broadcast Services central office is now located at the 4 th floor of the PIA
Building along Visayas Avenue in Quezon City. It houses the four BBS Metro Manila stations
including the studios and offices as well as the transmitters for the FM station. The transmitters for
the 50-kilowatt stations are located in Polo, Valenzuela, Bulacan.
BBS has pursued its assigned task with aggressiveness heretofore unseen in government
broadcasting without, for a moment, losing sight of the basic principles of communications upon
which it is predicated truth and balanced. News productions in all BBS station have been dictated
by accuracy, clarity and objectivity. However, as a matter policy, emphasis is placed on materials
that promote public awareness of official government activities, programs and projects, including
regular Presidential pronouncements, Senate and House going-on, and virtually every single
important events in the various agencies and instrumentalities of government that address itself to
the public welfare.
News and public affairs have been, and will continue to be, the centrepiece of BBS
operations. More than 50 hours of straight news is broadcast daily over the network. On the other
hand, public affairs broadcast, though difficult to quantify as innumerable features of these exist
within various programs in almost all stations aside from the feeds emanating from the regular
conduits of information in government, may reach three to four times as much airtime as straight

10

news gets. Cultural, educational and services; Perform such other functions as may be provided by
law. Sports features round up well balanced and complimentary network programming.
Despite limited resources, BBS s increasingly becoming truly relevant to the national
development effort. It recognizes that development is change, and for change to occur, the proper
stimuli must be provided by designing and implementing communication strategies with which to
motivate desire behaviour among the people.
Thus, change for BBS, begins with it. Radio programs are steadily evaluated and
improved; personnel undergo training to enhance skills and knowledge; equipment and facilities
are fine-tuned or upgraded; future strategies are formulated and a new direction is charted.
This then, is BBS vigorous, aggressive and uncompromising in the all-important fight for
the hearts and minds of the people. It is an organization of people who believe that development
can only come about if people who believe that development can only come about if people and
government communicate freely. BBS is and will be an important voice in the universal clamour to
perpetuate democracy and sustain the atmosphere for growth and progress in this country.

NARRATIVE REPORT
April 11-12, 2013
After days of waiting, finally this time I have started my internship or the so-called on-thejob training. Early in the morning since I go
through the Philippine Information Agency in
which the Philippine Broadcasting Service is
located. Ms. Marivic Cusi, the HR staff or one of
the Training Supervisor lead and take me in the
Radyo Magasin : 1278kHz , wherein I will be
assigned as a Technicians assistant in the
Master Control Room until I finished my
required hours of OJT.

Logging in and record the time in which any

segment or program aired.

First meet with one of the technicians in DZRM named Mr. Jun Ignacio was really
intimidating. But then he welcomed me, together with my co-trainee with full of willingness and
sincere enthusiasm. He first taught us the brief history of Philippine Broadcasting Service and
16

Radyo Magasin. Then, he well elaborated and explained all the necessary principles of the
operation in AM Radio Broadcasting. As far as I understand from him and learned from my past
subject, the radio signal or the voice from the anchors booth goes into the console and then
directly transmitted to the transmitter tower, the radio signal is then converted into an information
signal wherein everybody can understand. It is said to be that the signal of an AM is more sensitive
as it is more prone to noise. Sooner or later according to him, we will go to the transmitter tower
located at Marulas, Valenzuela City.
After all his explanations, Mr. Jun Ignacio let us observed what he will do and how the
console performs. After such time doing things by himself, he eagerly let us control the live
broadcast through the console. I have learned to adjust the volumes at the station and the natural
sound that airs from the radio of the listeners or receivers. Likewise, we are asked to connect the
reporter from other area to the station via phone patch. Other thing is that we performed
connecting our station or simply hooking up to the Mother
Station, Radyo ng Bayan : 738kHz. Day after, we met
another 2 technicians namely Mr. Noriel Pineda (acting
supervisor) and Mr. JR Espedilla, they taught us how to rip
programs that we are going to play at exact time and at the
same instance by connecting the ripped songs into the
console so it will air accordingly. On the other hand, they
also taught us to record a live program. Simultaneously, we

are also assigned to log and record the time in which any

segment or program aired. I learned to thoroughly use my sense of hearing as it plays a role to
obtain a better broadcast of a program. Sounds are sensitive, we should know where and when to
limit the sound produced.
This week is only a matter of observations and quite hands on. It is not enough that I know
the equipment, I must also know its function and purpose. Thats why I should have put in my mind
the things I have learned.

April 15-19, 2013

17

It is so nice to start my duty inside the Master Control Room of Radyo Magasin to be in
front of the equipment I only used to hear during my past
subject in Communications. Since we knew the basic
purpose of a console, our second week was primarily
about hands on and putting ourselves beyond the
console. Given the fact that we cant do it alone, still
there is the guide of the assigned technicians. As I am a
part of the technical side, it is my responsibility to
perform the basic principle and use of a console.
Working in front of the console.

Just like last week, we connected some

reporters from other area via phone patch, adjust volumes, rip cds, record conversations and live
programs and hooking up to the Mother Station, Radyo ng Bayan. Mr. Jun Ignacio also taught us
how to connect or disconnect the said station in the anchors booth. The only difference from last
week is that this time, we took more time with the equipment. There is also a time when I and my
co-trainee were left alone in the Control Room and put up their trust for us to operate and
performed the console. Again at the same time, we log and record the time in which any segment
or program aired.
This week, we met another technician named Mr. Jojo Duque. For a moment, we served to
be just observers of him. We were just behind his back whenever he needed help. But days after,
he also let us performed and used the console.

NARRATIVE REPORT

April 22-26, 2013

I started my internship again this week by acting upon inside the DZRMs (Radyo Magasin)
Master Control Room. I was given the chance to get adapted on how the operation of our station is,
simply by sitting beside the console and do hands on. Just like last week, we are assigned to
connect the reporters from different agencies by means of programming the telephone and the
console. We then used to modulate the sounds produce and air from the stations or anchors
booth, and continue learning to adjust the sounds heared from the live audio streaming. We also
did the recording of live segments, and this time Mr. Noriel Pineda taught us how to edit such
recordings using the

segments that are needed to be aired
accordingly. Simultaneously, it is still a part
of our training to record and log the time
properly in which the program has been
played.
Mr. Noriel Pineda also taught me the basic operations during sign on and off
of the station. He told me that one time or whenever I want, he will let me operate it

by myself. On the other hand, the technicians also educate us about the so-called rack that
consists of a patch field wherein such cables are linked. There is also the Peak Modulation that will
control the volume and should be guided strictly to avoid low quality of sound. After all
explanations, he told me that one time I will do it by myself.
This week we encountered about 5 hours off air due to the transmitter maintenance, and
because of this I,

us to operate the console and the programs. He didn't take us for granted but he only wanted us to
be well acquainted with the equipment. We still did connecting the reporters from other areas,
program the necessary segments and songs, hooking up and to the Mother Station and limiting the
sounds that aired from the station. Aside from the console, we also took time to manifest the rack
by linking the cables to obtain a connection between the different stations.

25

I, together with my co-trainee seem to be the technicians for today. On the other hand, a
new trainee came. Since we know the operations, our supervisor assigned us to teach him about
the purpose of the console and how it performs.
April 30, 2013

So this time, I did my very best to be at the station as early as I can, so for the fruitful
reward I made it to do and know the operations on signing on
of the station. My supervisor let me do turning on the
equipment properly, and so to program the songs and
segments needed that time. It seems easy but still I need to
be familiarized first with the proper buttons and connections
so in later time I can do it only by myself. Again, we served to
be as the acting technicians today. I am so exposed with the
console so this time I know exactly what will I do. What I have

done yesterday are typically the things I did today.

The director of the Management named Mr. Tito Cruz also orient us again about the
Philippine Broadcasting Service. He also educates us by the things and trainings we have right
now. Its the first time to meet him and amazed by his highfalutin words of wisdom.

Labor day, but then I still took time to work for the
station. Although, a memo came in that we should only hook
up to the Mother Station, Radyo ng Bayan, so this means that
we have nothing to do today. But instead of wasting my time, I
do edit the recorded conversations and live segments of our
stations. I took much time in editing to have smooth and clean
records. Likewise, the technicians also let us observed in the

other stations on what they are doing and be familiarized also with their equipment.
May 2, 2013

Only one technician is assigned for today so he let me once again to operate the console
by myself, I continue to performed it with the everyday
workflow. Most of the time, he always left the station
and goes anywhere, so I feel like his responsibility was

me do all things for my professional growth.

This time, I am so exposed to the console and the patch field and I already have the
confidence that what I am doing is correct and right. With pleasure, I dont experience any mistakes
for today.

May 3, 2013

This day I served as a trainer of a trainee. The technicians gave me the opportunity to
teach the new trainee about the operations inside the Master Control Room of Radyo Magasin. I
think this is their way for them to know if I learned from the past days or not. I educate him how to
perform the console primarily. I realized that those things I have done is not easy, well everything is
a matter of learning by doing. I teach him how to connect our station from other sister stations in
the rack or patch field. He appreciated my effort as I see that he learned.
27
Teaching the new trainee.

I am assigned once again to operate the

console for long hours. And before I went out the station,

first prepared and programmed the necessary songs

and segments that will air in the evening. Then after
today, I only have about 35 hours of training to complete
this practicum.

It seems easy for me this time to perform the necessary equipments needed to operate a
radio station. But then, I still act upon beside the console, computers, and the rack that contains
the patch field with my full willingness and sincere enthusiasm. It is my
everyday work flow to connect the reporters from other places to our
station, rip cds and program the songs and segments need to be aired in
appropriate time, record and edit the live programs using the Adobe
audition, hooking up and down in our Mother station Radyo ng Bayan,
assisting the new trainee, modulate the sounds that aired in the audio
streaming and simultaneously logging in the programs and segments
accordingly.
The so-called rack,
modulating the sounds that air.
May 7, 2013
Last week, I try to be as early as I can just to see how signing on a station is but
unfortunately I didnt make it from the starting
operation. But this time, I did my best I finally used to
see personally how the signing on is operated. The
technician let me open and turn on the equipments that
will be used, and I realized it is not totally hard to do
and so simple. He also let me programmed the filler
songs that will air before the proper sign on.
So after that, Ill go back to the work flow of our
station. I took much time to assist the new trainee and
let him do the necessary works. I was also given the

chance to be at the DJs booth and see how the anchor

performs their equipment. I also assisted one of the anchors to what buttons to used and operate.
The best thing is that I became a part of a live segment and interviewed by the Disk jockey. It is so
nice to experience that before I leave the station my voice was heard on air.

This is the last day of my training in

Philippine Broadcasting Service. I said to myself
that this will be the most excellent day of my
training. I will give the best that I can be, perform
my work and duties with compliance and most of
all served my trainers and proved to them that I
am worthy of being here.

knowledge I have gained definitely stocked in my

mind and used to perform equipments that certainly enhance my technical ability. The things I have
learned are also the things that will lead me to my own professionalism. As I have said, It is my
everyday work flow to connect the reporters from other places to our station, rip cds and program
the songs and segments need to be aired in appropriate time, record and edit the live programs
using the Adobe audition, hooking up and down in our Mother station Radyo ng Bayan, assisting
the new trainee, modulate the sounds that aired in the audio streaming and simultaneously logging
in the programs and segments accordingly. Even though it is always the same things I did every
day, but I can say that this gave me the opportunity to experience how to be a technician and use
my engineering know-how.
This day also, we were given the chance to be at the transmitter site of DWBR (Business
Radio) and have been educated by Mr. Virgilio. He taught us how the operation is and what the
purpose of those towers and satellites are.
As this day ended, I already completed the 240 hours needed in my on-the-job training.

Even Im done with my required internship hours; today I still go in the Philippine
Broadcasting Service to patch up my necessary requirements before I leave. While waiting for the
documents, I took time to help and still work inside the control room of Radyo Magasin.
It is so pleasant to hear from the mouth of your trainers such words of wisdom that
certainly help me to be motivated and driven to be successful in my future career.
After I received all my documents, I bid goodbye with my trainers and supervisor and leave
the Philippine Broadcasting Service with gratitude and my head up high.

Problems Encountered
With Mr. Jun Ignacio, DZRM
Technician.
During the training, the student trainee has faced and
encountered problems regarding to such matters that goes beyond the
four corners of the control room, outside the station and the people around him. These problems
are the following with a brief explanation:

1. Lack of enough information during the trainees orientation.

-The trainee together with the others got a problem about going to the Marulas
Transmitter when stopped and asked not to go by the Training staff due to improper
33

actions of the trainees. According to her, trainees must have her approval first even though
their supervisors allowed them to visit the transmitter. Due to lack of information of the
trainees, they didnt get a chance to visit the Marulas Transmitter.

2. Marulas Transmitter maintenance.

-Since the Radyo Magasins transmitter located at Marulas, Valenzuela
encountered such struggles, the technicians are asked that it will be under maintenance
for a short while. Due to this instance, the station cannot primarily broadcasts on air and no
live programs will be expected that is why the trainee has nothing technical works to do but
to wait until the transmitter is conditioned.

3. Blackout.
-Actually, blackout may happen anytime and it cannot be avoided. The trainee
witnessed this kind of problem as it happened once around Manila and the station holds a
live program. The equipments got shut down and station is being tripped off for about 3
minutes.

4. Malfunctioning of the equipments.

-Likewise, it may be usual to any stations or company to experience
malfunctioning of the equipments. It is unexpectedly that the equipment, the computers
primarily used by the trainee got malfunctioned. At that time, the programmed songs and
segments are ready to be played on air.

5. Off air due to technical mistakes.

34

-The trainee did encounter mistake when he accidentally stopped the recorded
program in the computer that plays on air. As a result, no songs are being heard for about
a minute and this is what off air is.

Recommendation
For the said problems encountered, there are possible solutions that are highly
recommended by the student trainee:

1. About having the lack of information given by the HR or the Training staff in regards to
going in the Marulas transmitter, waivers from the office which is signed by the
supervisors, training staff and the student trainee is necessary. The training staff must

35

also orient every trainee very well about their rules and regulations to avoid
misunderstanding between them.
2. Regarding the maintenance of the Marulas transmitter, truly it cannot be prevented
and it may happen for better operation of the station. Since live programs cannot be
done in this time, the trainee suggested to try if the voice from the station can still be
heard by the listeners through the audio streaming in internet. Gladly, there is still the
chance and it is possible to be heard even the transmitter is under maintenance. So by
that time it happened, programs and segments were continually broadcast and done.
3. Blackouts may happen anytime and sometimes it is unexpected to happen. Since the
company has a generator, the station can still function and operate. But some
equipment lead to shut down and the trainee must help the technicians in assisting
them to open such equipments.
4. About the malfunctioning of the equipments, it not always happen but still the trainee
recommends to first try the equipments before using it. It is always necessary for the
technician to check every equipment if there is a problem with it to avoid unexpected
malfunctions. But sometimes, just a simple hang can be prevented.
5. Regarding off air, technical mistakes can always be the main reason. The trainee
recommends not using the computer which plays the songs and segments on air. The
user must be careful and be informed about the programmed computer.
6. Above all, the trainee highly recommends to always have the confidence to
troubleshoot all the problems. Keep in mind that for every problem there is enough
solutions.
