DTMF MODULE (DUAL TONE MULTI-FREQUENCY) MODULE

When you make a call to a customer care you might have heard the voice saying press 1 to do
this, press 2 to do that and so on. When you press any key on the key pad of your phone, a computer
present on other end detects your key. The technique by which the key is detected is called DTMF
technique. Dual Tone Multi-Frequency or DTMF technique is a method for instructing a telephone
switching system of the telephone or mobile number to be dialed, or to issue commands to switching
systems or related telephone equipments.

WORKING:
When you press a key on a mobile phone or a land line you can hear a beeping sound; this beep
sound is nothing but DTMF generated. The DTMF tone is nothing but combination of two audible
frequencies. The transmitter of a DTMF signal simultaneously sends one frequency from the high-group
and one frequency from the low-group. This pair of signals represents the digit or symbol shown at the
intersection of row and column in the table.

CONSTRUCTION:
The DTMF module basically consists of three units:

1. Input unit
2. Decode unit
3. Output unit
INPUT UNIT:
The input unit of the DTMF module is basically used to receive the DTMF audio output from a
mobile phone. Here two berg strips are connected as mentioned in fig-6 (DTMF IN). An audio connector
is provided in your kit. Connect one part of that audio connector to your mobile phone and other part
with this two pin berg strip.

DECODE UNIT:
The decode unit reads the tones received from the input unit and converts (decodes) these
tones to their equivalent digital value. The digital values are the binary representation of the numbers 0,
1, 2, 3, 4 etc in the form of 0 and 1. Then these 0s and 1s are sent to the output unit.
This module requires a power supply, for which two berg strips are exposed, and which are
mentioned as POWER SUPPLY in fig6. In these two pins a convention is given as I and N, where I
stands for +ve and N stands for ve. Power to this pin should be provided by using a 3-core connector
from the motherboard.

OUTPUT UNIT:
The output unit reads data from decode unit and sends them to the DATA out pins as
mentioned in fig-6 also it sends data to the LEDs connected at the back side as shown in fig-7.
The LED-0, LED-1, LED-2 and LED-3 glow when they get a logic-1. But the LED which is mentioned
as STD (Standard Tone Detect) will glow only when a valid DTMF tone is detected.
The logic data generated, corresponding to each key press is mentioned in the given table. The
keys A, B, C and D are normally not available in general phone sets. These are generally used by the
operators to send some special commands or instructions.
