INTRODUCTION:
1.1

The Paintronics CD-16 is a Cathodic Disbondment testing unit capable

of performing up to sixteen (16) separate tests simultaneously. All
power and metering is internal with the only external connections to the
sample bar, the platinized electrode and the reference Calomel
electrode.

OPERATING THE SYSTEM:

4.1

Turn all the channel "V Adjust" potentiometers fully counter-clockwise

and then turn them 4 full turns clockwise (note: these are ten-turn
potentiometers) .

4.2

Connect each circuit as shown in figure 2 (note: different cathodic

disbondment tests on panels or plates may require minor variations in
set-up).

4.3

Plug in the unit and turn on the main power switch, make sure that the
fine and course voltage adjustment pots are set to zero (fully turned
counter- clockwise).

4.4

Turn the function switch to calomel electrode and insert the calomel
electrode into one of the test beakers.
Note: Do not leave the calomel electrode in the test solution for
extended periods of time.

4.5

Turn on the power switch for the corresponding channel (note: a light
above each switch indicates power is "on '').

4.6

Using the course and fine potentiometers adjust the supply until the
reference potential (as measured between the calomel electrode and the
sample bar and shown on the test voltage meter) reads 1.500 volts. As
a check you should see hydrogen bubbling off of the damage site of the
sample bar (note: different cathodic disbondment tests require minor
variations in set-up potential).

4.7

Move the calomel electrode to the next sample repeating step 4.5 and
adjust the reference potential to 1.500 using the channels "V Adjust"
potentiometers (repeat this step for all the remaining channels).

4.8

Adjust the reference potential for all channels using the channel "V
Adjust" potentiometer according to the frequency required in the
specifications.

Note: If the channel "V Adjust" potentiometer

is unable to
accommodate the required adjustment inpotential, adjustment of
the system power supply may be required.

r:

Note: If a channel is unable to be set within the desired range, the leads
connected to the bar and the platenized electrode may need to be
cleaned (this can be done using emery cloth).
4.9

To measure the circuit current (as required in some specifications), turn

the function switch to the Shunt Resistor position. Press the button
labelled "Test" (one per channel) and hold down to measure the voltage
across the internal shunt resistor (this reading is shown on the Test
Voltage meter). The shunt resistor is 10 ohms, therefore divide the
shunt voltage by 10 to determine the circuit current. Repeat this step for
each channel in use.
