they already have Israeli as an ally (the strongest in the region)

o they wanted to the United States to notice them by showing them that the US has to take
Egypt seriously
o US agrees to take Egypt as an ally

in 1979 there is a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt

o gets US friendships, money (second largest recipient of US aid in the world)
o obtains the Sinai (incredible beaches) <-- tourist attraction
o other Arab states ban Sadat and Egypt from the Arab League (known as traitors)
oil countries refuse to provide Egypt with oil
o loses support from their people, that's why Muslim Brotherhood gains a lot of strength
assassinate Sadat, then Mubarak comes to power
o power line (Muhammad Ali's line - King Faruq, Nasser, Sadat, Mubarak, 2011 Revolution,
Morsy - less than a year, Sisi - military general)
#10. 1987-1991 First Intifada
Palestinians give up on the PLO they want to take matters into their own hands
intifada means uprising
these people live in the concentration camps, and in the worst conditions possible
rock throwing uprising
o children throw stones at Israelis tanks
o this represents the unevenness of these fights between stones and tanks
o 11,000 Palestinians and 164 Israelis died
o this was televised all over the world, this gained the support of Europeans because of the
disparity
#11. 1993 Oslo Accords: Declaration of Principles
the intifada forced world leaders, Palestinian and Israeli leaders to come together and form a
tentative peace

mutual recognition between PLO and Israel (acknowledged that Israel is a legit, official state, and
Israel recognized PLO has the legitimate representation for Palestinians and not a terrorist group)
o they are accepting reduced version UN Resolution of 181
stalemate, nothing happens for the next 7 years

meet 7 years later to hammer out the details
complete, utter failure and disaster
Israelis say that (1) there will be no return for the refugees (2) most of the settlements will not be
removed from the West Bank (3) Jerusalem will be Israelis
two months after this meeting, second intifada breaks out

#13. September 2000-2005 Second Intifada


suicide bombing is popular especially in buses, malls (Palestinians now blow up Israel towns and
civilian centers and cause as much damage as possible)
the point is not to get international attention, it is to get Israeli attention
1000 Israelis are killed and 4000 Palestinians
#14. 2002 Construction of the "Separation Barrier" begins (the wall)
middle of the second intifada
idea is to physically stop Palestinian suicide bombers
Palestinians are now "walled in"
"green line" is the border from the June 1967 War (the sixth day war)

o it doesn't even follow the "green line"
o the wall itself is a problem
o the wall goes around because they want to protect the Israeli settlements
#15. 2005 Israel "withdraws" from the Gaza Strip
they dismantle the settlements on the Gaza Strip, but Israel until this day, retains the access point of
the entire Gaza Strip
controls water supply, and electrical supply for the Gaza Strip
Israel controls all access (food and medicine supplies)

Hamas did not know the kidnapping occurred, because of these 3 kidnapping, Israel attacked the
Gaza Strip and killed 2000 Palestinian (this was all an excuse to go attack Palestinians)

biggest problem: the settlements of Israelis in Palestinian land
o who goes and lives there
(1) poor Israelis - low taxes, financial incentives, new immigrants from Russia
(2) religious Israelis - people with religious conviction
what can be done?
o something if the US put pressure on Israel
special relationship
o a foot in the Middle East (oil)
