RRHoax Call Put Through To

Prime Minister Cameron

OFFICIALS are reviewing security

measures after a hoax caller pretending
to be the director of the governments
eavesdropping agency managed to get
through to Prime Minister David Cameron on the phone January 25.
Cameron ended the call when it
became clear the call, purportedly from
GCHQ director Robert Hannigan, was a
hoax, Downing Street said. No sensitive
information was disclosed.
Officials said a separate hoax call was
made earlier the same day to GCHQ,
resulting in the disclosure of a cellphone
number for Hannigan.
The mobile number provided is
never used for calls involving classified information, officials said in a
statement.
All government departments have
been alerted for similar calls and security procedures are being reviewed.

RRLondon Mayor Boris Faced

With Huge US Tax Bill

A LOT of Londoners may not be

aware their mayor
carries an American
passport as well as
a British one but
Uncle Sam is certainly aware of it.
Boris Johnson was
born in New York, and as an American
citizen, hes liable to pay American
taxes, which he has reluctantly agreed to
settle before he visits the US this month,
reports the Telegraph. A few months
ago, he insisted that he wouldnt cough
up. I think its absolutely outrageous.
Why should I? he said. I havent
lived in the United States since I was
five years old. I pay my taxes in full
in the United Kingdom, where I live
and work.
When asked why he didnt just
relinquish his American citizenship,
Johnson said it was very difficult to
give up. The capital gains tax bill the
mayor has settled related to the sale
of a London home in 2009, and while
some tax experts estimate it was around
$150,000, the Financial Times puts
it closer to $65,000. The mayor, who
will be visiting New York, Boston, and
Washington, DC, on his American trip,
is still pursuing the US Embassy for
around $12m he says it owes for London
traffic congestion charges, reports the
Guardian.

The US producer of the annual delectable is no longer using the Cadburys

Prince Andrew Speaks

Out On Underage
Sex Allegation

PRINCE ANDREW
last month publicly denied for the first time
allegations that he had
sex with an underage
teenager.
The 54-year-old royal, the Queens second
son and fifth in line to the throne, has faced
increasing pressure to respond to the accusations after the woman, identified only as
Jane Doe No 3 in court papers, named him
in documents filed with a Florida court.
The filing was part of a lengthy lawsuit
against American financier Jeffrey Epstein,
who the woman claims forced her to have
sex with prominent people, including
Prince Andrew. He is not named as a
defendant in that case, and no criminal
charges or formal allegations have been
made against him.
Buckingham Palace officials have
strongly denied that Andrew had any
sexual involvement with the woman.
I just wish to reiterate and to reaffirm the statements which have already
been made on my behalf by Buckingham
Palace, Prince Andrew said last month
during a visit to the World Economic
Forum in Davos, Switzerland. My focus
is on my work.
US lawyers representing the woman
have filed papers requesting that the prince
respond to her claims under oath. The
woman says in court papers the princes
denials are false.
The woman claims she was forced to
have sex with the royal in London, in New
York and on a private Caribbean island
from 1999 to 2002.

Feminists Cheer
As Bare Breasts
Disappear Off
Suns Page 3
Or Did They?
RR By Jill Lawless

FEMINISTS were rejoicing at the

disappearance of bare breasts from
the British tabloid The Sun though
the newspaper was not saying whether
the decision to ditch its Page 3 girls
was permanent.
The Rupert Murdoch-owned tabloid has
featured topless models on its third page
for almost 45 years, but since January 16
they have been replaced by models wearing
bras or bikinis.
The Sun declined to comment on the
change, but the Murdoch-owned Times
newspaper reported that the feature had
been dropped from the papers print edition.
It said the Sun website would continue to
feature topless models.
Murdoch bought the struggling Sun in
1969 and turned it into Britains best-selling
newspaper, a mix of patriotic flag-waving,
celebrity scandal, cheeky humor and,
critics say, sexism.
The Suns circulation has been declining
for years as people switch to digital media,
though it still sells about two million copies a day.
INTEGRAL
Page 3 was long seen as integral to the
brand, but Murdoch has recently indicated
that might be changing. The Suns Irish
edition stopped using topless models in
2013. Last year Murdoch said he found
Page 3 old-fashioned, but readers seem
to disagree.
A protest campaign led by young

women under the slogan No More Page

3 has helped put pressure on Murdochs
News Corp.
Campaigner Yas Necati said it was
about time the newspaper dropped a feature that gives the message that men make
the news for what they do, and women for
what they look like.
The Conservative-led governments
education minister, Nicky Morgan, said
the move was a long-overdue decision and
marks a small but significant step towards
improving media portrayal of women and
girls.
But former Page 3 models spoke up in
defense of topless tradition.
This isnt a triumph for feminism,
model Laura Lacole told the BBC. This
is a triumph for prudishness.
RETURNS
But, it appears the celebrations were
early, as just two days after this story broke
nationally in the UK, the Sun announced

LAST MONTH Britains main political

parties agreed to grant Scotland new tax
and spending powers to fulfill a promise
of greater autonomy made as politicians
scrambled to persuade Scots to reject independence in a recent referendum.
The plans are unlikely to satisfy hardcore Scottish nationalists, but could have
far-reaching consequences, taking Britain
toward a looser, more federated state.
In a September 18 referendum, 55
percent of Scottish voters opted to remain
in the United Kingdom, while 45 percent
voted to leave.
Since then a commission of politicians
from Scotland and the rest of Britain has
been thrashing out proposals to fulfill the
promise made by anti-independence forces
in the final weeks of the campaign, as polls
showed rising support for separation.
The plan published last month would
give the Edinburgh-based Scottish parliament, established in 1999, the power to set
income tax rates and keep the revenue in
Scottish coffers. Scotland would also gain
new control over welfare spending.
Prime Minister David Cameron said the
proposals kept a promise hed made during
the referendum campaign, that a No vote
did not mean no change.
But John Swinney, deputy leader of
Scotlands pro-independence administration, said the powers fell short of what
Scottish people wanted.
Under these proposals, less than 30
percent of our taxes will be set in Scotland
and less than 20 percent of welfare spending will be devolved to Scotland, he said.
The proposals will be introduced as
legislation in Parliament in January.
They could open a constitutional can
of worms, boosting calls for other British
regions, and even major cities, also to be
given tax-raising powers.
Cameron also promised to introduce a
contentious proposal for English votes
for English laws. It is intended to address
a quirk of Britains political system that
means Scottish lawmakers in the House of
Commons can vote on policies that only
affect England.

Fox News Guest Derided

For Saying Birmingham
Totally Muslim
RR By Sylvia Hui

A NEWS commentator who told Fox News

that Birmingham, England, is totally
Muslim has apologized for the comments,
which drew widespread online ridicule.
Steven Emerson, an American author
whose website describes him as a leading
authority on Islamic extremist networks,
told Fox News in a live broadcast last
month that in Britain there are actual
cities like Birmingham that are totally
Muslim, where non-Muslims just simply
dont go in.
Emerson, who was discussing last
months terror attacks in Paris with host
Jeanine Pirro, also claimed that in parts of
London, Muslim religious police beat
and injure anyone who doesnt dress according to Muslim religious attire.
Official figures show that the number
of Muslims in Birmingham, Britains
second-largest city, numbered at 234,411,
or 22 percent of the citys population.
That compares to 494,358 who described
themselves as Christian.
Emerson quickly tweeted an apology
saying his comments were totally inaccurate. But his comments continued to
draw derision online, spawning dozens of
humorous reactions on social media.
British Prime Minister David Cameron
told ITV News he choked on his porridge when he heard about the claims.
This guy is clearly a complete idiot,
he said.
Fox News has sine issued on-air apologies on numerous occasions.

Anita Harris, the singer

Mrs Harris and her

report in the Mail on Sunday .
The actress reportedly owes more than

This is not the first time Mrs Harris, who

In 1985 she and her husband lost all of

A spokesman for the Insolvency Service

Three US Air Bases In UK To Close

WASHINGTON The Pentagon last
month unveiled sweeping plans to consolidate its forces in Europe, taking thousands
of US military and civilian personnel out of
bases mostly in the UK and Portugal, in an
effort that will save about $500m each year.
RAF Mildenhall, RAF Alconbury and
Molesworth will all be returned to the UK
government. Off-setting some of the troop
reductions in the UK, the US has selected

The changes involve mainly Army and
Air Force personnel and facilities, and
would result in the overall reduction of
about 2,000 US workers in the UK. About
3,200 would come out of RAF Mildenhall
while about 1,200 staff would be added at
RAF Lakenheath with two squadrons of

through puddles and splash pedestrians.
Many angry walkers have contacted
police forces complaining of drenching
through drivers aiming their vehicles through
standing water.
Ironically, even police officers were cited
among the perpetrators.
Local laws say splashing comes under
Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, and
can be punished through a fixed penalty
notice.
Amazingly, six police forces had lists of
complaints involving splashing incidents.
There has been 63 reported incidents
of motorists driving through a puddle and
splashing pedestrians during a five-year
period from January 2009.
South Wales Police had 38 reported cases
of splashing, with victims as young as 10.
A police officer was forced to apologise
after driving a 4x4 through standing water,
while one pedestrian complained that a bus
driver accelerated to soak those walking on
the pavement.
While, on the more extreme side, a
van driver was given a ticket for a public
order offence after driving back and forth
through a large puddle to intentionally splash
pedestrians.
Two motorists were involved in altercations after being accused of splashing.
Mike Frisby, the Driving Instructors Association chief examiner, said motorists have
a duty of care not to splash pedestrians,
something which can be easily avoided.
He added: Its probably not widely known

The homes on the golden streets of

Londons two wealthiest boroughs are now
worth more than the entire economy of Den-

mark following huge rises in property prices

over the past year.
The houses and flats of Westminster have
a combined price tag of 120.5bn while
those in Kensington and Chelsea are valued
at 110.5bn, according to new research. The
GDP of Denmark, the worlds 35th biggest
economy, is around 222bn.
The latest data from agents Savills reveals
the vast and growing scale of the wealth tied
up in Londons residential property market.
In total, it is estimated to be worth just under
1.5trn more than the markets of Northern
Ireland, Wales, Scotland and the North of
England combined.
But Lucian Cook, director of residential
research at Savills, warned London property
was increasingly being seen as a lucrative
tax milch cow for the rest of the country,
which could be used to help close the deficit.
Stamp duty, much of it raised in London, is
already one of the Treasurys fastest growing
sources of revenue and Labour has pledged
to levy a mansion tax on homes worth more
the 2mn, nine out of ten of which are in
the capital.
He said: The extent to which housing
wealth is concentrated in the London area is
already reflected in the tax revenues it generates to central government. However, there
is a real danger in politicians over-taxing the
sector, when the real issue is the fundamental
under-supply of new housing in the capital
against a rising population.

is one of the biggest challenges for the youth
justice system.
I would say, if you look at the evidence,
some young people in our care have probably
gone through more trauma than soldiers in
Afghanistan, he said. In our focus groups, if
you say, have you seen anybody stabbed?,
everyone puts their hand up. Or, how many
people have seen somebody shot?, its well,
Ive been shot or my cousins been shot. So
they have seen trauma in their life.
The London Assemblys police and crime
committee is preparing a report on London
youth re-offending after Mayor Boris Johnson
promised a rehabilitation revolution. He
aims to cut re-offending after custody by 20
percent from a baseline rate of 70.8 percent
at the beginning of 2011. Assembly figures
show that at the end of 2012, the latest year
available, 54.5 percent of London youths who
had left jail re-offended.
A Met spokesman said youth violence fell
by 4.1 percent in 2013-14 with nearly 600
fewer victims. For adults and youths, there
were 1,300 fewer knife offences a fall of
11.5 percent.

Lights Go Out At Stars

Favourite French Restaurant

One of the capitals best loved French restaurants has closed because of the dwindling
number of regular local diners left in lights
out London.
Racine, a favourite of Bryan Ferry and
Harvey Keitel, shut its doors for the last time
in January despite a string of rave reviews
since it opened in Knightsbridge in 2002.
Owner and chef patron Henry Harris said
he had made the decision largely because of

the neighbourhoods rapidly changing character. Wealthy foreign buyers have snapped
up apartments and houses in recent years,
often leaving them empty.
The restaurant, where signature dishes
include cote de boeuf with Bearnaise sauce

Major Shake Up Of
Ambulance Roles Could Not
Be Worse Timed

The London Ambulance Service is changing the roles of more than 100 station managers in a radical attempt to halt an exodus of
staff and improve emergency response times.
Ambulance chiefs believe the plan will allow 1m to be reinvested in frontline crews
and tackle the slowest 999 responses in
the country.
The proposals come as soldiers and
police were put on standby to again drive
ambulances after unions announced further

strike action on January 29 in a NHS-wide

pay dispute.
LAS operations director Jason Killens
has proposed axing the 104 ambulance
operation manager and duty station officer
posts, replacing them with 21 group station
managers in a shake-up of the 168 middlemanager roles.
One source said the changes could not be
worse timed or more disruptive and would
hugely dilute the effectiveness of middle
managers, who play a key role in major
incidents, counsel staff and ensure broken
ambulances are fixed.
NHS latest figures revealed that London
ambulances reached 64.3 percent of the
most serious calls within eight minutes the
target is 75 percent.
Ambulance unions were set to walk out at
midday on January 29 for 12 hours, the third
day of action in protest at the one percent
pay deal. A 24-hour strike is likely to follow
on February 25.

Iraq War Inquiry Report

Delayed Until After Election
RR By Danica Kirka

THE REPORT of an inquiry into Britains

role in the Iraq war will be delayed until
after a national election in May, its chairman said, provoking dismay from politicians of all parties last month.
Sir John Chilcot, a former senior civil
servant who is heading an inquiry that began in 2009, wrote to Prime Minister David
Cameron saying that the report was being
delayed because individuals mentioned in
it need a chance to respond.
Until we have received and evaluated
responses from all those who have been
given the opportunity to respond, I cannot

give an accurate estimate for how long it

will then take to complete our work, but
it is still clear that will take some further
months, Chilcot said in the letter, released
last month.
I therefore see no realistic prospect
of delivering our report to you before the
General Election in May 2015.
Britains participation in the US-led
invasion was deeply controversial at the
time, and became more so when there
proved to be none of the weapons of mass
destruction, which had been the key argument for deposing Iraqi dictator Saddam
Hussein.

UK Arrests Man In Sony

Playstation And Xbox Attack
AUTHORITIES in Britain have arrested
an 18-year-old man accused of computer
hacking offenses related to days of disruption on Sonys PlayStation Network and
Microsofts Xbox Live services last year.
Police said last month he was also arrested in connection with false threats in
the United States a practice known as
swatting, or providing false information
suggesting that a threat exists so that police
respond with SWAT teams. Authorities
declined to say where in the United States
the alleged offense occurred.
Craig Jones, head of the police cybercrime unit that handled the arrest,
the swatting allegation involves law
enforcement forces in the United States
receiving hoax calls via Skype for a ma-

jor incident in which SWAT teams were

dispatched.
ARRESTED
The man, who was not identified, was
arrested on suspicion of unauthorized access to computer material and threats to
kill. Police seized a variety of electronic
and digital devices at the suspects home
for further investigation by specialty units.
The arrests came as Prime Minister David Cameron was in Washington to meet
with President Barack Obama to discuss
cyber threats and other issues.
Britains South East Organized Crime
Unit says it worked with the FBI in the
investigation into the alleged activities of
the man from Southport, a seaside town in
northwest England near Liverpool.

The Presidents Executive Action On

Immigration: What Does It Mean?
ON NOVEMBER 20, 2014 President Barack
Obama announced a number of administrative fixes to the enforcement and process
of US immigration law that could positively
affect noncitizen family members who do not
have lawful immigration status. There are also
numerous employment related provisions that
are not the subject of this article.
On the family based front, the Presidents
message was that the US government was going to use its resources to deport felons, not
families. After these changes in enforcement
priorities, there are three programs that could
greatly benefit undocumented immigrants
who have significant ties the US: (1) Deferred
Action for Parental Accountability (DAPA); (2)
an expansion of Deferred Action for Childhood
Arrivals (DACA); and (3) an expansion of a
stateside Provisional Waiver. If you are no
longer in lawful immigration status or never
had lawful immigration status, depending on
your circumstances, you may qualify for one
or more of these programs.
Both DACA and DAPA are nearly identical
in terms of the benefits derived from these
programs. Successful applicants for both
programs will receive relief from deportation
and a work permit for three years. If DAPA
is like DACA, it will be renewable after the
initial approval period. Additionally, there is
a possibility that DACA and DAPA recipients
can receive permission from the Department
of Homeland Security (DHS) to return home
and reenter the US without forfeiting their
newly acquired legal status. To qualify for
DAPA, the foreign national must have (1) a

US Citizen or lawful permanent resident (LPR)

child; (2) five years of physical presence in the
US; (3) not be deportation priority (including
not having certain criminal convictions); and
(4) have paid taxes. DACA requires a similar
set of considerations, except the noncitizen
must have been physically present in the US
since before the age of 16 and have graduated or be currently enrolled in high school at
the time the application is filed. Fortunately,
DACA expanded its eligibility from people who
were 31 and younger at the time of the initial
announcement to anyone at any age, so long
as they entered before turning 16. Additionally, the DACA validity period was expanded
from two to three years. It is important to
note however, receiving relief under DACA or
DAPA is not the same as having a green card
and, though unlikely, the programs could be
cancelled by future presidents.
President Obama also expanded the class
of eligible people for the stateside waiver program. Under some circumstances, marriage to
a LPR or US citizen will not enable the foreign
national to apply for a green card in the US. If
the noncitizen does not qualify to receive their
green card in the US, foreign nationals will
need to return to their home country and apply
at the consulate. Unfortunately, depending on
the circumstances of entering the US and of
the amount of time resided in the US without
permission, a noncitizen may be subject to
a 3/10 bar upon exit of the US. There is a
waiver for the 3/10 bar, but that process can
be lengthy and in some cases take up to 18
months. The significant amount of time being

separated from many foreign nationals loved

ones served as a deterrent to applying for this
waiver. Thus, in January, 2013, President
Obama announced a provisional waiver that
would allow qualified applicants to wait for
their consular interviews inside the US. One
of the biggest criticisms of the initial program
was that only foreign nationals with US Citizen
Spouses could request the waiver, though
green card holders could also request a waiver
for their spouse, if the undocumented spouse
without status was willing to wait outside the
country. Fortunately, the Obama Administration changed the rules on who can apply to
be in line with the consulate rules. Now, a US
Citizen Spouse or an LPR Spouse, whose visa
is immediately available, can file for a waiver
of the 3/10 year bar and the undocumented
spouse can remain in the US while waiting for
the green card interview at the US consulate
abroad.
Although highly controversial, through
these programs President Obama is making
strides to create an immigration system that
tries to keep families together and to give
people with deep roots in the US an opportunity to stay.

Irish Cabinet Minister

Announces Hes Gay

A SENIOR Cabinet minister in Ireland has

announced hes gay, becoming the first
openly homosexual government figure in
the history of the traditionally conservative
Catholic country.
Last months announcement on state
radio by Health Minister Leo Varadkar
received widespread praise for its straightforward honesty.
Varadkar said he decided to declare his
sexuality before several government initiatives this year to advance gay rights. These
include plans to legalize gay marriage,
permit homosexual men to donate blood,
and create greater parenthood rights for
gays in surrogate-pregnancy cases.
Varadkar made his announcement on
his 36th birthday. He says his family,
friends and many colleagues long had
known or suspected he was gay.
He said he gave his parents advance
warning because he didnt want them to
hear the news first at Sunday Mass.

British Jihadi Faces Prison

After Admitting Terrorism Acts

A BRITISH jihadi who faked his own

death faces a prison term after pleading
guilty to terrorism offenses.
Imran Khawaja had been arrested when
he tried to return to Britain last year after
attending a terrorist training camp in Syria.
His guilty plea could not be reported
until January 20 when reporting restrictions were lifted.
The 27-year-old had asked his taxidriver cousin Tahir Bhatti to pick him up
in Bulgaria and bring him back to Britain
by car.
While they were driving, his death on
the battlefield was falsely announced in
Syria by associates.
He was arrested in June last year entering Britain at the port of Dover.
They will both be sentenced next month.

A good cook book is only as good as

its poorest recipe

Julia Child

MY QUOTE this month is a segue into sharing one of my intentions in 2015, making
a sort of bucket list, but for years I have
talked about writing a cook book based on
the Union Jack recipes, I know I have had
so many requests for one. So that is my
intention, and I welcome any suggestions
or requests that you as readers might have,
I promise it will get done!!
Recently I took my daughter out for her
birthday, and we went to a new restaurant,
which is owned by a British Chef. We
werent sure what to expect but the menu
was awesome with many British items, my
daughters favourite was having Banofee Pie
and Sticky Toffee Pudding! In my choices I
had the Mulligatawny Soup, which was very
good, featuring beef, chicken and lamb in it.
Delicious, but I am a wimp when it comes to
spicy things and it caught up with me! I am
not a huge fan of curry, usually it is just too
spicy for me, but I loved my Mums version.
My family were part of the colonization in
India (British Army) back in the day and
my grandmother had given my mother the
general recipe for curry which isnt supposed to be hot and spicy but more fragrant.
I dont have her recipe for Curry powder, but
thought I would share my version of Gary
Rhodes, and an updated recipe of my soup.
Hope you enjoy it
Curry Powder:
2 tsp cumin seeds
2 tsp cardamom pods or seeds
1 Tbsp coriander seeds
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp ground turmeric
1/4 tsp ground paprika
1/4 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp ground cloves

Place the cumin, cardamom and coriander in a deep roasting pan, and roast
in 350F oven about 15-20 minutes or
until they get a nice colour. Leave to cool.
Using a processor or grinder (or mortar
and pestle if you have the strength!), and
grind to a fine powder. Shake through a
fine strainer (a tea strainer works fine if
you have one) to remove any bits, and mix
with all the remaining spices. Keep in an
airtight container. Makes about one ounce
curry powder.
This is not a quick recipe, but is worth
the time and effort.

Mulligatawny Soup

1-2 lbs chicken, (whole)

4 cups beef broth
1 sliced onion, 1 sliced carrot
1 slice celery stalk, 1/2 tsp salt
2 Tbsp butter
1 chopped onion
1 green apple, peeled, cored and chopped
1 Tbsp curry powder
2 Tbsp flour
1 Bay leaf
1/4 tsp all spice
1/4 cup cream, sour cream or yoghurt
Place chicken in a large pan, add beef
broth, onion, carrot, celery and salt, cover
and simmer for 1 hour. Remove chicken
and discard the skin and bones, put up
into small pieces or shred it, and put aside.
Strain the broth and chill 4-5 hours if possible, or overnight, then scoop up any fat
which will have risen to the top
Heat the butter in a heavy saucepan,
cook chopped onions and apple about three
minutes. Add mixed flour and curry powder
and cook one minute stirring all the time,
keeping it smooth: gradually add the broth,
bay leaf and all spice. Cover and simmer
about 45 minutes. Add the chicken pieces,
simmer for 15 minutes more, and serve with
either the yogurt, cream or sour cream on
top of the soup, or I like it mixed in the soup
This is usually served with a bowl of rice.
About 5-6-servings
I would like to wish you all a very Happy
and Healthy New Year, with good eating!!

recipes are welcomed. If you want to

IN THE thirty years I have been contributing to

Union Jack, there is one subject I have never
covered: the NHS. I have a couple of excuses
one is I am generally quite fit (touch wood)
and the second that I am no expert.
Nevertheless, the NHS is a key topic
these days as the General Election is barely
a hundred days away. All the main parties
are pledging to protect it while claiming
that the NHS is not safe in the hands of any
other party.
Frankly, I am unsure whether despite
our politicians assertions that our NHS is the
best in the world it is the envy of every other
nation on earth. In the years since the great
global financial crisis of 2008, the cutbacks
in public spending have been severe, and
this winter accident and emergency (A&E)
departments in UK hospitals have been under
the severest of pressures. Across the country
hospitals are daily being forced to turn away
all but the most serious cases.
Partly this is a demographic feature: Fifty
years ago one in eleven of us was over 65.
Today it is more like one in six. Back then a
man could expect to live to 69 and a woman
to 72. Today the life expectancy for a man
is 79.5 whilst a woman survives three years
longer.
This means that increasing numbers of
what the politicians call the frail elderly are
finding their way to emergency departments
and once here they are proving much more
difficult to get rid of.
And why?
Because the cutbacks in social service
care mean there are simply fewer people
trying to help them get back home. Thus
there are queues of ambulances waiting to
admit patients into hospitals who cannot do
this because there is nowhere to put them,
a situation that has given rise to the term,
bed-blocking. This prevents ambulances
from attending to other emergencies and
leaves treatment cubicles full of people unable to get home.
On top of that, there are fewer hospitals
with A&E departments, presumably because
they cost too much to run. Here in Ludlow we
have a building which appears to be a hospital
in name only. In the last 18 months I have
never heard of anyone being admitted to the
place. It is now designated as a Minor Injuries

Unit (MIU), whatever that may be.

Oh, I tell a lie, I did
go there once joining
a lengthy queue of
fellow elderly frails
for my flu jab.
An MIU is staffed
by trained nurses
and is a walk-in facility, a so-called selfreferral unit. It will
treat anything that doesnt require a doctor,
like burns, scratches, cuts and lacerations.
In some parts of the country, you can dial the
NHS Direct where a trained medical person

(I put it no stronger than that) will offer an

over-the-phone diagnosis and tell you if you
should go to an A&E department.
Here in south Shropshire, we have a
choice of hospitals Shrewsbury, Telford,
Kidderminster, Worcester or Hereford but
none is less than twenty miles away. My
impression is that this service has been
deliberately run down in the past two or three
years, thus placing more responsibility on the
increasingly distant general hospital.
There is another factor here which is a result of the Labour Governments negotiations
with doctors over a new contract in 2004.
I dont wish to sound too cynical but at the
expense of receiving greater remuneration
GPs had to agree to a new contract which
saw their standard hours run from eight in
the morning till eight at night on weekdays
and eight to one on a Saturday. Out of hours
services are generally run by someone other
than your own doctor. To be honest, I am
unsure who does run them (I am not an
expert) but an awful lot of people are unable
to get a doctors appointment right away so
opt to turn up at A&E.
I am not sure that extra cash alone will
solve the problems. Alone of the major par-

ties, the Liberal Democrats have pledged to

find the 8bn the NHS chief thinks the service
needs. Labour claims is will use 2bn from
a mansion tax while the Conservatives claim
that the recovering economy will do the trick.
More people are turning to A&E because
they do not want to wait for a doctors appointment. Some people are there for entirely
frivolous reasons. At the weekends, the service
is bedevilled by a vast number of (mainly)
young men and women who have spent
several hours downing quantities of alcohol.
There have been suggestions that drunks
should not be treated since their emergency
is self-inflicted. The trouble with this argument is a question of where the line is drawn.
Self-inflicted involves a value judgement.
Is a speeding motorist in a crash entitled to
treatment? What about a sportsman bust up
playing rugby? Or a smoker?
Ultimately a doctor has to treat what
s/he is presented with, regardless of its
cause. Thats my view anyway though there
are some health authorities in the country
who threaten not to treat smokers.
None of these considerations can have
much influence upon the crisis which is daily
unfolding in the UKs A&E departments. The
one thing that is clear, however, is that catastrophe has been avoided by the dedicated
men and women who work in the NHS.
The pressure they are under is intense but
the kill, good humour and selfless dedication
of our health professionals are astonishing.
Their tireless application to the unremitting
demands of caring for their fellow men and
women is utterly admirable, as revealed in
TV programmes such as 24 hours in A&E
now in its seventh series. We spent six years
looking at Kings College Hospital, now the
cameras are installed in St Georges Hospital
in Tooting.
These are professionals who will work
long beyond their contracted hours, often
going in to work on their days off.
Is it any wonder that as a country we
love our NHS, a love that is equally shared
by those who work within it? It may or may
not be the best in the world but we genuinely
believe it is and that is why it is central to
the forthcoming General Election, exactly as
it has been ever since its inception in 1948.

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

The New, Longer
Arms Of The HMRC!

IT USED to be true (with a few exceptions)

that having left the UK, your income and gains
would not be subject to UK tax. One exception
was rental income from UK property; the UK
had the first right to tax this income because
it went with where the property was situated.
And a few years back, they introduced a liability for capital gains if you were non-resident
for less than five tax years. Now we can add
something to this list from April 5, 2015,
non-residents will be taxable on gains made
on the sale of UK residential property.
This is, according to the UK government,
on the basis of fairness, sustainability and
simplicity, which isnt quite how it seems
from here!
Looking first at what they intend to do,
the gain will only be taxable on the part made
after April 5, 2015. One way to work this out
is from a valuation of the property made this
spring, so a good suggestion is therefore to
arrange to get one done. If its better for you
when you sell, the gain can be apportioned
over the whole time you own the property,
but only part from the months and years after
April 5, 2015 will be taxable. The valuation
will be helpful to enable you to decide which
approach to choose.
When getting a valuation done for this
purpose, you will obviously want a high value.
Please remember that HMRC dont have to
accept your valuation, and if they think its
unreasonable, may ask the local District Valuer
for an opinion.
After youve sold, there will be the question
of when and how to pay the tax. If you already
have dealings with HMRC, for example,
because your property has been let, you can
declare the gain on your UK tax return. Anyone
else will have to make a return to the HMRC
within 30 days of completion of the sale and
pay the estimated tax at that time.
Although you may normally want as little
to do with any tax authority as possible, this
suggests you could be much better off if you
declare some rental income in order to establish what they call an existing relationship with
the HMRC. As an example, no tax is likely to
arise from a sale in the summer of 2015, but
tax would be due in one month if you dont
have an existing relationship, or in 19 months

if you do. It isnt clear at the moment whether

all British people have an existing relationship
simply by virtue of having National Insurance
numbers and Unique Taxpayer Numbers
(UTN) that are used for filing tax returns.
You may remember that capital gains tax
is a separate tax in the UK, not part of income
tax, as it is here. Each individual has a capital
gains tax exemption each year, and for 201516 this will be 10,010.
If your taxable gain is above this figure, you
will be due to pay UK tax at 18 or 28 percent,
depending upon the amount of the gain and
any other income you have to be taxed in the
UK. Of course, you will be able to claim foreign
tax credit here for the tax you have paid in the
UK. Oh yes, the gain must be declared on your
US Tax Return as well!
The problem with this is that your US tax on
the gain will probably be at one of the much
lower rates for long-term gains 0 percent,
15 or 20 percent. In this case, your tax credit
will be limited to the amount you are actually
paying in the US on the gain. So in real terms,
you will be paying more tax on the gain simply
because the UK rates will be higher.
What to do? None of this should be treated
as specific advice and it is prefaced by the
warning that years of tax advisory work have
emphasized to me No Major Decision Should
Be Based On Tax Implications Alone! So if you
still have a family home in the UK that you
may return to it, whether it is let out or not and
you have no plans to sell, then sit tight! Get
a valuation perhaps, to cover the unexpected
event of having to sell, but thats all.
Other suggestions could include putting a
UK property in joint names if it is not already,
because couples are taxed separately in the
UK and you will get the benefit of two exemptions and lower rates. But remember that you
cant gift an asset to a anyone for only limited
purposes, so this would have implications!
Otherwise, if you want to keep an investment in the UK property market, you could
sell your residence and buy UK commercial
property yes, you read that right the
problems only apply to UK residential property!

both countries, if only because its a much better response that crying! She lives and works

A CATHOLIC priest got a standing ovation from his congregation after revealing
he is gay.
Metro reported last month that Father
Martin Dolan, who has served in Dublin
for 15 years, spoke out in support of gay
marriage during mass and added: Im
gay myself.
Community youth worker Liz OConnor
told the Irish Sun: We are all very proud

Because he has admitted that he is gay
he doesnt change the person that he was
before it.
A referendum on the issue is due in
May, and a recent poll showed that nearly
70 per cent of people in Ireland are in support of gay marriage.

UKs City Link Delivery Firm

Lays Off More Than 2,300

ADMINISTRATORS of City Link, the collapsed British parcel delivery firm, say more
than 2,300 people are losing their jobs after a bid to buy the business fell through.
Last month the company, based in Coventry, central England, announced that it was
going into administration, a form of bankruptcy.
The employees union called the timing, at Christmas, disgraceful and said workers
were being treated in a brutal, callous fashion.
Last month administrators Ernst & Young said an offer from a consortium to buy the
firm offered no money up front and significantly undervalued the assets to be acquired.
They said 2,356 employees had been laid off, while 317 were being retained to deal
with remaining parcels and help wind down the business.

THIS MONTH, February 19 to be exact, marks

the 30th Anniversary of the first broadcast of
EastEnders. Yes, 30 years since Den, Arthur
and Ali kicked in the door of Reg Coxs
bedsit and said, Cor, it stinks in ere, and
it all kicked off. Since then there has been
story after story of the tragedy and comedy of life; iconic characters and fantastic
performances; massive, attention-grabbing
whodunits that gripped the nation, and small,
quiet moments that spoke to the truth of humanity. In 30 years, EastEnders has had its
ups and downs, but it has always remained
true its core: Brilliantly written drama about
real issues, affecting real people, told in an
entertaining and often enlightening way. Over
the years it has won awards, made history
and earned a legion of faithful fans who now
lift their glasses and say, Congratulations!
Heres to 30 more!
In 30 years, a lot has changed. But some
things remain the same Phil recovers
from being shot (again) and he and reluctant
Sharon dont grass Shirley up to the old Bill,
allowing her to return to the Square. Shirley,
Mick and Tina make a discovery when they
make a surprise visit to Babes house: It
is their Mum who has dementia and been
secretly kept there by Babe all these years.
Against Babes protests, they bring her back
into the family fold where she lets slip to
confused Stan, Tina and Mick that she only
has two kids: Two daughters, no son. Linda
then finally summons the courage to tell all
what Dean did. Mick goes crazy (naturally)
and beats Dean to a pulp, and in an attempt
to halt the beat down, desperate Shirley yells,
Stop! Hes your brother!, (as if that would
matter). Mick and Linda leave the Square
Elsewhere Jane proposes to Ian and
he says, Yes! Ben is pretending to be
straight, and dating messed up Abi Denise
is fired from the Minute Mart for stealing
alcohol. Kim returns from her very long
cruise ship gig to find overwhelmed Denise,
and helpless Patrick is covered in bruises
Kat finds out it was Alfie wot started the
fire and she tosses him out (she says) for
good One by one, it seems that everyone
in the Square is finding out that Nick Cotton
is alive and staying at Dots and everyone
is keeping the secret for Dots sake. But
is that good for Dot or anyone? Ronnie,
desperate to get rid of him, takes money from
Phils safe to bribe Nick to go away for good.
Phil confronts Nick and Nick tries to get back

at him by cutting the brakes on his car. We

remember what happened the last time Nick
tried to get revenge by cutting someones
brakes (Mark Fowler)
Across the Square, because of her relationship with Max, DI Emma Summerhayes is
taken off the Lucy Beale case, but she cant
let it go after all, she is now living in the
Square, at the Brannings, amongst all the
suspects and might the killer be actually living in the same house? Suddenly something
clicks and Emma runs home rummaging
through her Lucy file and realizes she has
cracked the case. But instead of going to the
Old Bill, she instead calls the murderer to say
she knows they killed Lucy, then meets them
at the park. We cannot see the killer, only she
(and possibly the tea vendor) can. But she
tells them she is going to the police But heres
the thing: In Albert Square, one must always
keep their wits about them when stepping
into the road. Ronnie and Charlie get married
and all goes well until the reception when Phil
threatens her over the missing money. Then
she goes into labor and instead of Phil getting
into the car, she, Roxie, and Charlie do, to
rush to the hospital. Just then, texting Emma
steps into the road, and gets hit and the car
crashes through the Square gardens. Ronnie,
Charlie and Roxie are rushed to the hospital
where Ronnie delivers a healthy baby boy
while in an induced coma (just what the world
needs; a Mitchell/Cotton hybrid. Lock your
doors!) Will Ronnie wake up? We dont know.
But Emma wont. She shakes off being hit by
the car and wanders around the Square for
hours, while anyone who might be a suspect
just lets her. Eventually she starts bleeding
from her ear and is driven to the hospital (by
Max) too late and dies. But does the identity of
Lucys killer die with her? We shall see! While
she was still wandering, Emma sent that text
to the killer and we heard it ping in the phone
of someone who was standing right there,
narrowing the suspect list to nine people, and
I have to admit, I jotted down the names for
future reference and am now beside myself
because I cannot find that slip of paper! Sigh.
Ah well, on to the live Anniversary episode
where the killer will be revealed!

No, surely thats not true, I asked? Unfortunately, yes it is, Pamela said.
I immediately asked about the affect on
the shops bottom line? Pamela explained
that 25-35 percent of business is from British
candies, and pointed out the situation would
affect us and Union Jack. She explained
that many small shops across the US will
no longer be able to afford to advertise and,
worse still, not survive that bigger hit and
will probably fold. Pamela said:: As none
of us are here to make our fortunes. Just a
living, serving the British Community, barely.
In shops across the country customers are
signing petitions in protest of this nonsense.
Michael, Pamela and a customer had just
finished an interview with ABC Good Morning
America when we realised they had conflicting stories. GMA wanted to know about the
uproar in the UK regarding the change of
six to five Easter Eggs in a package and the
different taste!
In the other battle, Hershey won a law suit
against Lets Buy British a wholesaler in the
US, and after filing a similar lawsuit against
a second wholesaler, Posh Nosh, accusing
them of infringing multiple trademarks (see
UJ December issue, and at www.ujnews.
com), that company has already agreed to
stop importing British Cadbury products,
according a Hershey spokesperson.
Hershey are now forbidding businesses
from importing British chocolate, especially
Cadbury brands, basically forcing us to do
without our beloved chocolate. Most ExPats
dont buy Hershey Cadburys chocolate due
to the taste and texture. The Brits prefer UK
Cadbury, but these actions will hurt Cadbury
UK as sales to the US are stopped.
It seems Hersheys have the license from
Mondelez to manufacture and sell Cadburys
here in the US. The problem is Hersheys

Subjects on a brand which

is not British made and
tastes nothing like British
chocolate. Does Her Majesty know, has she given
her seal of approval for
Hershey to use her name
to manufacture and help
market a product thats

Has she been told that
Hershey is denying her
subjects the right to buy
the chocolate she has approved for decades? Does
she know they are marketing a different flavor than
the one she approved? Is
it OK for Hershey to flout
the Royal Seal while all the
time denying her subjects
a British made product?

as it seems it cuts into their $9bn profit, this nonsense. Its nuts. (No Cadbury Fruit and

about the British, is you dont deny them
Hersheys is The Grinch that stole Easter.
Hershey claims the products packaging their cup of tea, fish and chips, soccer, or

they are saying is Hersheys customers are
so stupid they cant tell the difference in

I spoke to Nathan Dulley, President and

doing everything to resolve this problem
but sadly, Im not too optimistic. Mondelez

Everybody has to boycott. Were not
buying them. We want them as they are. We
must stand up for our rights to buy British

A feisty young lady, Nicky Perry of the NY

Ye Olde Kings Head Shoppe spokesperson mentioned, Hersheys products are
freely available all over the UK without ANY
restrictions, unlike here where UK Cadburys
is unavailable now.
Personally, we would like to ask Hershey,
who have an estimated 40 million Americans of British decent, plus an approximate
two-million-plus immigrant citizens and
permanent residents done to piss you off so
royally? Isnt chocolate supposed to be about

Motorist Killed After Hitting

Wild Boar On Motorway

A DRIVER was killed when his car struck

a wild boar and then was hit by a truck on
a Motorway last month.
Police say the car hit the animal on the
M4 motorway in southwest England on. A
truck then slammed into the car. The cars
driver, a 47-year-old man, was killed. The
boar also died.
Wiltshire Police said that the truck
driver was treated at the scene for minor
shoulder injuries and did not require hospitalization.
Wild boar, which typically weigh

between 100 and 200lbs in adulthood,

were hunted to extinction in Britain in the
Middle Ages. They were reintroduced by
farmers several decades ago, and escaping boars have helped the species make a
comeback in the wild.
Police Sgt Steven Love said it was
quite rare for a wild boar to be on the
carriageway of the motorway. It is more
common for the police to receive calls
involving horses or deer.
He said the boar was a particularly
large wild animal and would have caused
considerable damage to any vehicle.

British Agents Allowed To

Wear Disguises At US Trial
UNDERCOVER British investigators
will be allowed to testify wearing wigs
and makeup to conceal their identities
at the upcoming US trial of an alleged
al-Qaida operative, a judge ruled last
month.
The six MI5 agents conducted surveillance on Abid Naseer while investigating a failed plot to bomb a shopping
mall in Manchester, England, in 2009.
Federal prosecutors plan to call them as
witnesses next month at the trial, also
expected to feature evidence seized
during the Navy Seal raid in 2011 that
left Osama bin Laden dead.
At a hearing in Brooklyn, US District Judge Raymond Dearie approved
the disguise request after prosecutors
told him in court papers that the officers continue to work undercover on
sensitive cases and disclosure of their
identities would pose a significant risk
to their safety.
The agents will testify using identification numbers rather than names and
wearing wigs and light makeup, neither

of which will impair the defendants or

the jurys ability to view the witnesses
facial expressions and assess their credibility and demeanor, the papers added.
Naseer, 28, was extradited in 2013
to New York City where he pleaded
not guilty to charges he was part of
a broader al-Qaida conspiracy that
included the Manchester plot and one
against New York City. Two other
witnesses expected to testify against
Naseer Najibullah Zazi and Zarein
Ahmedzay pleaded guilty in the
thwarted plot to detonate homemade
explosives in the subways.
Prosecutors claim that email account evidence shows all three men
were under the direction of the same
al-Qaida handler. They also say documents recovered during the bin Laden
raid now declassified confirm the
terror networks leadership was behind
the conspiracy.
Naseer has decided to serve as his
own attorney at the trial. Opening statements are expected in mid-February.

UK Ebola Nurse Makes Full Recovery

After Being In Critical Condition
PAULINE CAFFERKEY, the Scottish nurse who was
in critical condition
with Ebola last month,
has been discharged
from the Royal Free

after making a full
recovery.
Speaking to the
BBC in an interview aired on Saturday,
39-year-old Cafferkey said she felt like
giving up after her conditioned worsened last month, but is now very happy
to be alive.
I still dont feel 100%, I feel quite
weak, but Im looking forward to going
home, she said, adding that she was excited to return to a normal life.
Cafferkey contracted Ebola after trav-

treatment facility for Save the Children in
November. She was diagnosed with Ebola
on Dec. 29 after returning to Glasgow. She
says she has no current plans to return to
West Africa, adding, I am definitely going to give aid work a break for a while.
Cafferkey was given an experimental
drug treatment, as well as a blood plasma
from an Ebola survivor.
Cafferkeys colleagues at the Blantyre
Health Centre in South Lanarkshire, where
the recovered Ebola patient is a nurse, were
overjoyed when they heard the news.
UK Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt told the
BBC he was delighted that Cafferkey
had made a full recovery, complimenting
her selflessness and courage.
She represents the very best of NHS
values, he added.

Home Secretary
Urges Fresh Action To
Combat Anti-Semitism

BRITAINS Home Secretary Theresa May

has urged fresh action to combat anti-Semitism amid fears in the Jewish community
following the terror attacks in Paris.
May said last month the hostage siege
on the Jewish supermarket was a chilling
reminder of anti-Semitic prejudice.
Speaking at a commemoration for attack
victims, May said that she never thought
I would see the day when members of the
Jewish community in the United Kingdom
would say they were fearful of remaining
here in the United Kingdom.
May says efforts to combat anti-Semitism must be redoubled because Jews are
integral to Britain.
Without its Jews, Britain would not
be Britain, just as without its Muslims,
Britain would not be Britain without its
Sikhs, Hindus, Christians and people of
other faiths, Britain would not be Britain.

OBITUARIES

Corries Deirdre, Anne Kirkbride Dies At 60

ACTRESS Anne Kirkbride, star of Coronation Street for more than 40 years, died
last month, she was 60.
Network ITV said
Kirkbride, who played
the long-suffering,
much-married Deirdre
Barlow, died January
19 in a hospital in Manchester, England, after
a short illness.
Set in the fictional working-class community of Weatherfield, Coronation Street
has been chronicling its characters lives
since 1960, with an enduringly popular
mix of social realism, melodrama and
humour. Kirkbrides character renowned
for her oversized spectacles and romantic
travails was at the heart of some of
the soaps most dramatic story lines for
decades.
The show is so popular that when
Deirdre was wrongly imprisoned for
fraud in 1998, newspapers campaigned
for her release and Prime Minister Tony
Blair was among those who proclaimed
her innocence.
LEGENDARY
Coronation Street executive producer
Kieran Roberts said the program makers
know only too acutely how much Anne
meant to the millions of people who
watched her create the legendary character
of Deirdre Barlow.

William Roache, who played Kirkbrides onscreen husband Ken Barlow

the characters married, divorced then
remarried years later said the show had
lost one of its iconic characters.
He said Kirkbride was an impeccable
performer with superb comedy timing
and an immense gift for really heightened
drama. We had some rows over the years
as Ken and Deirdre and it was wonderful
to play those scenes opposite her.
Kirkbride is survived by her husband,
David Beckett.
Just two days after Kirkbrides death her
tributes took centre stage at the National

Television Awards as colleagues and rivals

spoke of the actress.
Tears were flowing amongh the audience at Londons O2 Arena as Bill Roache,
delivered an emotional tribute to his late
co-star.
Bill Roache said: Together with
Annes brother John and his family, David,
and her Coronation Street family, and especially Beverley Callard who was very
close to Anne in her last days weve been
deeply touched by the outpouring of love
for Anne since she passed away.
He added: I love you, Anne. Thank
you.

Former Home Secretary Leon Brittan

LEON BRITTAN, 75, died last month

from cancer.
In a statement, his family said: Leon
passed away at his home in London after
a long battle with cancer. We shall miss
him enormously. There was to be a private
funeral service for family only, and a memorial service to be announced.
Brittan was an MP for 14 years between
1974 and 1988, representing Cleveland and
Whitby and later, Richmond in Yorkshire.
He served as home secretary under
Margaret Thatchers government between
1983 and 1986, and worked at the European Commission between 1989 and 1999.
Brittan was in the news last year over

International Market (Las Vegas) Performance Food Service (Santa Cruz)

allegations he was given a dossier relating to a paedophile ring that operated in

Westminster during the time he was home
secretary. Brittan denied any wrongdoing
and maintained he handled the documents
correctly.
His family added in a statement: We
also salute his extraordinary commitment
to British public life as a Member of
Parliament, Minister, Cabinet Minister,
European Commissioner and Peer together with a distinguished career in law,
and latterly in business.

Education Minister
GREECES education minister has denounced the wording of an art history
schoolbook as monstrous because it
strays from the countrys official line
on a major dispute with Britain over
the Parthenon Sculptures.
In a chapter on neoclassicism,
the book refers to the sculptures
transportation to England. Greece
says the 5th Century BC works were
illegally removed, and has lobbied
long to reclaim them from Londons
British Museum.
Andreas Loverdos said last month
he has instructed officials to ensure
schoolchildren receive the correct
information on the removal of the
ancient works from the Acropolis 200

Loverdos said the book, published
in 2003, will be withdrawn next term.
His comments followed complaints
by the oppositions shadow education

The Singers Singer

The Life and Music
Of Matt Monro
by Michele Monro

MATT MUNRO was

admired by many well
known musicians, producers and singers like
Frank Sinatra, Sammy
Davis Jr, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Shirley Bassey, Bing Crosby,
Tony Bennett and more.
Paul McCartney said
Matt was a great artiste. Whenever I met
him he was always a pleasure to be with and I
remember him fondly. The Beatles producer
and manager George Martin was instrumental
in the success of Matt and he said that Matt
was the finest singer of ballads that I have ever
had the good fortune to produce. like that other
great one, Nat King Cole, he had the rare gift
of getting to the heart of a lyric and with his
superb voice, delivering it in such a way that it
became a personal message to his audience.
Matt Monro was from a poverty-stricken
upbringing in war torn Britain and he rose in
time to fame as a beloved entertainer. Matt was
born Terry Parsons on December 1, 1930 in
North London England to Alice and Frederick.
Terry was one of five children with three brothers and a sister. His childhood was tough as his
father passed away when he was three plus his
Mom fell ill and he was in foster care for a few
years. At the age of 14 years, he left school
and he tried a trail of various jobs yet none of
them were for very long. He had a stint in the
army as a tank driving instructor in Hong Kong.
He sang in public as a youngster and at many
local talent contests winning several. He was
so good that he got denied being in contests.
He landed a radio position for his own show
called Terry Parson Sings. Back in London,
Matt had little success and he had to take other
work like driving a bus to keep going between
singing jobs. He tried to get the publishers
attention and it did pay off. The details of his
incredible career await the reader to discover
in this biography by his own child.
The love of a daughter to be her fathers
historian is a dedication which transcends
time. Michele Monro wanted her son Max to
know who his famous grandfather was. Her
Dad was known as the Cockney Sinatra. It took
Michele 20 years to complete this project. The
45 chapters cover all the bits and pieces like
a patchwork quilt where the whole is worth
more than the sum of its pieces. Michele did
extensive research from books, periodicals and
newspapers as well as an array of photos, radio
quotes, personal interviews, plus a directory of
her fathers recordings who died of liver cancer
in 1985 at the age of 54.

ROLLS ROYCE STORY PART II

THIS MONTHS column is the promised continuation of my Rolls Royce article a couple
of UJ issues ago. The Rolls Royce was party
to the most remarkable automobile takeover
ever witnessed in the history of the motor
car The Rolls Royce/Bentley saga. The
German company Volkswagen had bought
the Rolls-Bentley Corporation from the British company Vickers by out-bidding BMW
but there was a problem. BMW owned the
rights to the Rolls Royce name but back then,
Volkswagen owned the Rolls Bentley Crewe
factory plus the famous Rolls Royce radiator
grille and the Spirit of Ecstasy emblem.
These two proud German yet fiercely
competitive companies were at an impasse.
After all, ponder this: what is a Rolls Royce
without its signature grille and Spirit of
Ecstasy mascot, and what name does one
give to a car adorned with this signature grille
and famous mascot other than Rolls Royce?
Someone clearly made a big mistake,
said Hartmuth Hoen, an analyst at Enskilda
Securities in London. Its obviously a big
mess. This mess however was to be rectified in July 1998, Ferdinand Piech, the chief
executive of VW, and Bernd Pischetsrieder,
his counterpart at BMW, appeared together
to announce the details of a deal that would
allow Volkswagen to maintain exclusive
rights to the Rolls-Royce name until the end
of 2002. Thereafter, BMW would acquire the
rights to produce a new Rolls-Royce and
Volkswagen would maintain the right to build
Bentleys. We went for a peaceful solution
rather than a long legal battle, Piech said. But
he ruefully acknowledged that I would have
preferred to keep both brands.
The deal meant that in 2003 BMW could
produce the prestigious Rolls Royce motor
cars using the famous grille and Spirit of
Ecstasy mascot. Until that time BMW withdrew their initial threat and would continue to
produce the engines used in the Rolls Royce
motor cars for Volkswagen. The new deal,
splitting brands between rival auto manufac-

Page 13

turers meant that Rolls-Royce and Bentley

would be direct competitors, produced by
different companies, for the first time in most
Britons memory. Bentleys account for 60
percent to 70 percent of Rolls-Royce Motor
Cars sales. But the Rolls-Royce name is potentially more valuable than Bentley because
it is known better globally, said Christopher
Will, an analyst at Lehmann Brothers in London. In his analysis BMW got the last laugh.
This was back in 1998 however, today,
2014 which of the two companies has been
more successful? Volkswagen with their
Bentleys or BMW and their Rolls Royces.
The initial outlay was far more expensive
for BMW as they had to start and build a
brand new facility to produce their Rollers
whilst Volkswagen retained the old famous
historical Crewe Factory for their production
of Bentley motor cars. This Crewe factory
admittedly was aging but yet retained the
infrastructure and personnel with decades
of experience of producing the finest motor
cars money could buy. The sales figures of
Bentley motor cars had always been higher
than that of Rolls Royce but it is markedly
so today, Bentley outsells Rolls Royce by
over two to one. The profit margin on each
Rolls Royce is probably higher than that of a
Bentley but there is probably not that much
difference given that the volume of Bentleys is
significantly higher than that of Rolls Royce.
So, today, monetary wise Volkswagen with
their Bentleys has certainly got the better of
BMW Rolls Royces.
As for the actual products, it has been
my opinion that BMW didnt start off too well
with their new Rolls Royce motor cars. It has
been many, many years since a Rolls Royce
motor car has lived up to its revered name,
but, I for one believed that BMW could and
would have had the ability to bring this Motor
Carriage Icon back to its former revered glory.
I know that many people would disagree
with me on this one but BMWs initial Rolls
Royce model, the 2003 Phantom was just a
little bit ordinary and a little too boxy for my
taste, it survived though and it has been, and
continues to be, their flagship model today.
In all honesty, it is a work of art, a motor
engineering perfection but, hypothetically,
would it stand up to the standards of Charles
Rolls and Henry Royce? Does this Phantom
deserve the accolade given to the 1907 Rolls
Royce Silver Ghost, with its legend The best
motor car in the World. I dont think so but a
lot of rich and famous people would disagree
with me because they bought lots of them,

pick however would be Bentley so my hat
so who am I to argue with that?
As for Volkswagen and their Bentley line is off to the boys in Crewe for continuing to
up, well they had a little more going for them make the finest motor cars in the world. Ten
than BMW in 2003 when the Rolls Royce/ years from now though, things may change
Bentley split became official. Production as I dont expect Rolls Royce to play second
had never ceased at the Crewe factory. If fiddle to Bentley for ever, if they can help it.
This RR/Bentley saga started way back
you remember, they had the license to build
both Rolls and Bentleys until that time, and in 1972 when RR got into trouble with the
build them they did. The Bentley models in development of the RB-211turbofan aero
2003 were the Arnage and the Azure. The engine. One winner that came from this
Arnage, which was identical except for the (and its a little off-topic) was myself. I was
interior to the Rolls Royce Silver Seraph then working at Joseph Lucas, not the auto
and was initially, was powered by a 4.4 litre parts division but the aerospace side of the
BMW V8; British made and sourced from company. We were working for Rolls Royce
Cosworth Engineering a then subsidiary on the RB-211 when it went belly up. Redunof Vickers. It became clear however that dancies were taking place but because I was
Volkswagen could not accept the business a former apprentice there I wasnt to be afand reputation risks associated with having fected. However one of my fellow apprentice
their rival as a long-term business partner so buddies found us a job overseas in Holland
Volkswagens response was to prepare the so we elected to get laid off with three weeks
old pushrod 6.75 litre 16 valve engines from free pay. That started my itinerant design
the Bentley Turbo R for the Arnage. Power engineering career and it has taken me half
for the Azure came from the companies own way around the world before finally ending
up in Southern California. But for RR I would
stalwart 6.75 litre V8.
The Bentleys of today rely no more to probably still be in Lancashire.
Happy Motoring
BMW power-plants, the latest Continental
models are powered by a 6-litre, 12-cylinder
engine, configured in a W formation. Unlike
The Perfect Gift a conventional 12-cylinder engine with two
banks of six (V-12), the Continentals 6-litre
engine is configured in two banks of VR six
cylinders each (2x VR6). This shortens the
W-12 engines length considerably, compared to a two-bank configuration. The W-12
produces upwards of 552 bhp. Top speed on
these latest big luxurious Continental models
is over 200mph and 0-60mph on some
models is about 3.7 seconds.

THE US should lift its ban on the import of

haggis in an attempt to tackle the countrys
obesity crisis, a Conservative peer has said.
Lord McColl of
Dulwich, a retired
professor of surgery, said American Scots were being deprived of the
wholesome food.
But Lord Winston, a leading fertility
doctor and television presenter, hit back,
saying that haggis was revolting but if
it could be used to curb obesity it should
be promoted in Glasgow first.
And Conservative peer Lord Forsyth
of Drumlean, a former Scotland secretary,
joked that former first minister Alex Salmond should be sent permanently to the
States to sort the problem out.
At question time in the House of Lords,
Tory Lord McColl called for the Government to put pressure on the American
administration to lift the ban, which has
been in place since 1971.
He told peers: The United States government is depriving 24 million American
Scots of this wholesome food which satisfies hunger very much more than the junk
food Americans consume.
This would help to deal with the
greatest epidemic they have the obesity
epidemic, which is killing millions, costing
billions of dollars and the cure is free.
Department for Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs minister Lord de Mauley said
there were two hurdles.
First the US restrictions on the import
of lamb. We are working with the US
authorities towards achieving approval
to lift those restrictions with I think good
prospects, he said.
Secondly the USs unwillingness to
recognise animal lungs as an acceptable
food stuff. In this regard the most promising
avenue in the short term is the production
of haggis omitting the inclusion of lung and
the Scottish government recognises this.
He said the former environment secretary Owen Paterson had lobbied the US
authorities during a visit last summer.

the Bulgarian, Tsvatana Pironkova 6-4, 6-0.
Four Brits competed in the singles competition, but only Andy Murray made it through
the first round. Qualifier Kyle Edmund and
James Ward did not progress. Murray beat
Indias Yuki Bhambri and then, Australias
Marinko Matosevic, both in straight sets.

Sullivans First Victory,

McIlroy Hole In One

Andy Sullivan claimed his first EuroTour victory in the South African Open at
Johannesburg, February 11. His eleven
under par 277, put him in a play-off with the
2011 Masters Champion, Charl Schwartzel
of South Africa, who looked to have had
the tournament in his pocket before some
disastrous shots on the final round. The
28-year-old from Nuneaton, took a birdie on
the first play-off hole to clinch his maiden
victory. He became the first Briton to win the
South African Open in 44 years.
Rory McIIroy put away a hole in one
during the second round of the Abu Dhabi
Championship, but it was Martyn Kaymer
who lit up the course before crashing rather
spectacularly on the final nine holes of the
tournament that concluded, January 18.
The German led by six strokes going into
the final round and was soon ten ahead of
the field, before his game imploded. Frances
Gary Stal claimed his first Euro-win with a 19
under 269, McIIroy was a stroke behind, and
Kaymer, a stroke behind him.

New Dart Champions

Scottish dart thrower Gary Anderson, won

his very first world dart championship at the
PDC event at the Alexandra Palace, December
18-January 4. It was a tense and close final
where Anderson beat 16-time former world
champion Phil Taylor 7-6, to claim the top
prize money of 250,000. Anderson beat
last years winner Michael van Gerwen of

the Netherlands, 6-3 in the semi-final, while

Taylor overcame old rival, Raymond van
Barneveld, also of the Netherlands, in the
other semi. The 44-year-old new champion,
originally from Musselburgh, becomes the
first Scot to win the PDC title. The competition drew an opening round of some eighty
throwers including representatives from over
twenty countries. Last years British Darts
Organisation (BDO) champion Steve Bunting,
who switched to the Peninsula Darts Organisation (PDC), reached the quarter-finals
before making his exit.
The BDO World Dart Championship at the
Lakeside Leisure Centre at Frimley Green,
January 3-11, saw top seed James Wilson
go out 3-1, in the first round courtesy of
Peter Sajwani of Sweden. Last years losing finalist, and second seed Alan Norris,
went out 4-3, to Darryl Fitton in the second
round. Scott Mitchell took his first BDO world
crown after a tense 7-6 win in the final over
three time winner, Martin Wolfie, Adams.
Mitchell, 44, a landscaper from the New
Forest, says the 100,000 prize money will
help him buy the new tractor he needs. Lisa
Ashton retained her womens title with a 3-1
win over Fallon Sherrock.

Sailing, Basketball and

Boxing

The Barcelona World Yachting Race,

featuring seven vessels crewed by two men
in a non-stop race around the world left Barcelona, December 31. Top British yachtsman
Alex Thomson, who has won the round the
world clipper race, and competed three times
in the Vendee Globe, finishing third in the
2012-13 race, teams up with Spaniard, Pepe
Ribes in the ocean racer, Hugo Boss. The
NBA game at the O2 Arena, London, drew a
packed house where the New York Knicks
suffered their 16th consecutive defeat as the
Milwaukee Bucks won 95-79. OJ Mayo
scored 22 points, while Brandon Knight
got 20 Deontay Wilder became the first
American since 2006, to claim a piece of
the world heavyweight crown. He beat the
Canadian, Bermaine Stiverne (24-2). after
a unanimous decision for the WBC title at
Las Vegas, January 17. It the first time Wilder
(33-0) has gone the distance, winning all
his other fights by knockouts, including a
first round demolition of Britains Audley
Harrison. Wladimir Klitscho holds the other
heavyweight crowns.

Cup Results

The third round of the FA Cup, January 2,

3, 4 and 5, witnessed Sheffield Utd, pull off

another giant killing with a 3-0 win at Loftus

Road, against premier club QPR. The second
division outfit who earlier ousted premier side
Southampton, in the quarter-finals of the
Capital One English League Cup a couple
of weeks previous, proved the better side in
London, where a goal by Marc McNulty and
a double by Jamal Campbell-Ryce sent the
Blades headlong into the next round.
The five remaining non-league clubs failed
to progress. Northern Premier side Blyth
Spartans, went two up with both goals by
Robbie Dale, at the break at Croft Park, but
Birmingham City came back in the second
half, including a brace by Wes Thomas for a
3-2 victory. Derby County left it late to beat
Conference side Southport, where a penalty
in the last minute gave them a 1-0 edge. West
Bromwich Albion slammed Gateshead 7-0
at the Hawthorns, where Saido Berahino hit
four. Crystal Palace came away with a 4-0
win after a visit to Dover Athletic, and Stoke
City doused the hopes of Wrexham 3-1.
The big guns all went through. Chelsea
beat Watford 3-0, Manchester City came
from behind at the Etihad to win 2-1 against
Sheffield Wednesday. Manchester United
won 2-0 at Yeovil Town, and Arsenal overcame Hull City 2-0 at the Emirates.
The Capital One English League Cup semifinals, first legs January 20-21, witnessed
Liverpool hold Chelsea 1-1 at Anfield. An
Eden Hazard penalty put the blues ahead in
the 18th minute, before a Raheem Sterling
equalizer in the 59th minute left the clubs all
square. An Andros Townsend penalty sixteen
minutes from time, was enough to Tottenham
a 1-0 win at White Hart Lane over Division
Ones Sheffield United.

American Soccer

The 2015 MLS season starts the first week

in March, but already the traffic across the
Atlantic is beginning to mount. Sunderland
made a swop with Toronto FC. They get
England player Jermain Defoe, and the
Canadians get Jozy Altidore. The US striker
has been playing in Europe since 2008, but
except for a bunch of goals (38) at Dutch
club AZ Alkmaar, he has failed to produce his
best form. US International Brek Shea, arrives
at Orlando City, after nearly two years with
Stoke City, and will join Brazilian star Kaka,
at the new franchise. Later, former Chelseas
utility man Frank Lampard, will head for New
York City, with Liverpools Steven Gerrard

Public Pressure Dims Soccer

Options For Convicted Rapist
RR By Gregory Katz

HES YOUNG, experienced and wants to

play but Ched Evans is also a convicted
rapist and it looks like public opinion may
prevent the forward from ever resuming
his professional soccer career.
Evans, 26, is out of prison after serving
time for raping a 19-year-old woman in
his hotel room in 2011. Yet the reaction
in Britain to his possible return to the
nations favorite sport is becoming more
and more vehement.
The high-profile case raises questions about the role of rehabilitation and
challenges conventional wisdom that a
convicted criminal who has paid for his
offense should be given a chance to work.
The situation is complicated by Evans
lack of remorse he insists he is innocent
and has never apologised.
Oldham, an English team that plays in
the countrys third-tier League One, was
considering signing Evans but changed
their mind when major sponsors Verlin
and Mecca Bingo said they would drop
the team if he joins. Also cited as a reason for the teams change of heart, were
threats against their staff and families on
social networks.Thousands have signed
an online petition opposing Evans return.
APOLOGISE
Meanwhile Evans did apologise for his
actions amidst the controversy.
I agree hes served his time but its
a very serious crime, said Kath Woodward, a professor of sociology at Britains
Open University who deals extensively
with sports issues. Remorse would go
some way toward ameliorating the situation. Its very disappointing that clubs
like Oldham are trying to get a reasonable
player cheap. It shows the management
of football doesnt understand the changing times.
She said societys attitudes toward
rape and sexual harassment have hard-

ened considerably since the days when

former heavyweight champion Mike
Tyson was able to resume his boxing
career after serving time in prison for a
1992 rape.
I can remember the idea you just
have to put up with it, its part of life,
but women now are not prepared to do
that, she said. Theres a lot of public
feeling against him coming back, a lot
of public protests. The fans genuinely
dont want it.
SENTENCE
Evans was jailed for five years in 2012
but was released in October after serving half his sentence. The former Wales
national team player said he would work
to clear his name and that he wanted to
return to soccer.
Sheffield United said in November that

Evans would train with the club, sparking

almost immediate opposition. Prominent
Britons, including Olympic gold medalist Jessica Ennis, said they would drop
their association with the club if they
signed Evans.
The pressure worked the club
changed course after 10 days and said Evans would not be training there after all.
After that, the prospect that Evans
could play overseas was raised when a
Maltese team said it would offer him a
contract. But British officials said since
Evans was a convicted sex offender this
would likely be impossible. A Ministry of
Justice statement said probation officers
would have to approve any new job and
would have to be assured of regular, faceto-face meetings, which effectively rules
out working abroad.

serious hearing. The County and City earlier
rejected Beckhams two proposals for ocean
front locations. Apparently, the people concerned with the previous negotiations have
heard nothing from Beckhams people since.

Big Clubs Feel The Heat;

Chelsea And Man City Out

The fourth round of the FA Cup, January 23-25, saw a number of Premier sides
struggle, and some of them made dramatic
and unexpected exits. At Stamford Bridge,
Chelsea were two up with goals by Gary Cahill and Ramires by the 36th minute, and the
inevitable demise of visitors Bradford City,
from the second division, seemed a formality.
But the City came charging back with a goal
just before the break, and then three nettings
in the final fifteen minutes gave them a 4-2
victory leaving an emotional Jose Mourinho
stunned. At the Etihad Stadium, Manchester
City failed to ignite against the Championships Middlesbrough, where Chelsea loanee
Patrick Bamford, put the visitors ahead eight
minutes after the break. The north-Easterners
brought Garcia Martinez, on for the final
three minutes and the substitute found the net
giving Middlesbrough a 2-0 win. At Ewood
Park, Swanseas Kyle Barkley, was sent off
after just seven minutes, leaving Blackburn
Rovers with a definite advantage. The Welsh
side went ahead however in the 21st minute,
but the Rovers leveled it two minutes later.
The Championship side would score twice in
the last twelve minutes, while the lily-whites
would drop to nine men in injury time when

Newcastle Name Carver As

Head Coach For Rest Of Season

JOHN CARVER will be confirmed as Newcastle head coach for the season.
Alan Pardews No 2 will take charge of
the team for the rest of the Premier League
season, after the clubs month-long search
for a new boss flopped.
Carver has drawn one and lost three during
his spell as caretaker boss.
He will go head to head with former boss
Pardew at Crystal Palace on February 11.
Newcastle had 80 applicants for the head
coach role, but were unable to lure their top
choices including Remy Garde, Derbys Steve
McClaren and Ajaxs Frank De Boer.

Everton Goalkeeper Howard

Out For Up To Six Weeks

EVERTON goalkeeper Tim Howard will be

sidelined for up to six weeks with a calf injury.
The 35-year-old US international initially
missed a loss at Newcastle with the injury
sustained against Stoke in an earlier game.
Hes picked up a calf injury in his left calf
and thats something that as a goalkeeper is
really unusual, Everton manager Roberto
Martinez said. It happened just kicking the
ball against Stoke.

West Brom Fires Alan Irvine,

Pulis Takes Over

PREMIER League club West Bromwich Albion

fired head coach Alan Irvine last month after
winning just one of its last nine games, saying
a change is necessary to boost its hopes of
avoiding relegation.
West Brom turned to former Stoke City
boss Tony Pulis, who returns to management
after resigning his post as Crystal Palace
boss on the eve of the 2014-15 Premier

Gylfi Sigurdsson, was red carded. Final

result; Blackburn 3, Swansea 1.

More Trauma

There was little joy at the Abbey Stadium

for Manchester United, facing Cambridge
Utd, a club just promoted from the Conference League. A record crowd of 8,000,
witnessed Louis van Gaal, rest Wayne
Rooney and Juan Mata, but the Division Two
outfit played their hearts out. A goalless tie
means the minnows will go to Old Trafford,
for a money spinning replay. Liverpool rested
Steven Gerrard, but struggled to a goalless game with the Championships Bolton
Wanderers, and fellow championship side
Fulham, pulled off a 0-0 tie away at Sunderland. A surprising result at White Hart Lane
where premier strugglers Leicester City,
produced a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Late Sport

At the Australian Open, Andy Murray

beat Portugal Joao Sousa and then Grigor
Dimitrov of Bulgaria, January 25, to reach
the quarter-finals for the sixth consecutive
year. It took the Scot three and half hours
to beat Dimitrov with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-7
(5-7) 6-3, 7-5 England continued their
warm-up for the World Cup, with a nine
wicket win over India at Brisbane. India 153
at 50 overs. England 156 (Ian Bell 88)-1 at
close. The England Lions drew their second
unofficial Test against the South Africa A
side at Bloemfontein. The Lions 260 and
402 (James Vince 152 not out)-7 at close.
South Africa A 421 (TB de Bruyn 161, Temba
Bavuma 102) Scotlands Alex Marshall,
won the singles crown at the World Indoor
Bowls Tournament at Great Yarmouth for
the sixth time.

League campaign.
Irvine becomes the second Premier
League manager to be sacked this season,
just two days after Neil Warnock was let go
by Crystal Palace.

Etoo Leaves Everton For Italy

SAMUEL ETOO has completed his free

transfer from Everton to Sampdoria.
Etoo leaves Goodison Park just five
months and 20 appearances after joining the
club following the end of a spell at Chelsea.
An Everton statement said the Cameroon
striker has signed a two-and-a-half-year
deal, but a tweet from the 33-year-old put
the length of the contract at three-and-a-half
years.

Goalkeeper Valdes Joins

United As Backup To De Gea

MAN UNITED signed former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes last month as a backup
to fellow Spaniard David de Gea.
The 32-year-old Valdes, who has been at
United training with the first team since October while rehabilitating from a knee injury,
signed an 18-month contract, with the option
for a further year.
He joins the club as the No 2 goalkeeper
and is a great addition, United manager
Louis van Gaal said.

Leeds Owner Cellino Loses

Appeal Against Disqualification

LEEDS OWNER Massimo Cellino has lost

his appeal against disqualification by the
Football League and must stand down from
his job until April.
A Professional Conduct Committee (PCC)
rejected the Italians appeal January 19 after
deciding that his tax evasion conviction in
Italy constituted a dishonest act.
Cellino was disqualified as owner in
December and is prohibited from having
anything do with Leeds until April 10.

By Ridge Mahoney
Arsenal: Santi Cazorla converted a penalty kick and Olivier
Giroud headed a clinching goal
midway through the second half
in a 2-0 Gunners win at Manchester City
that was their fifth victory in the last six
games. Alexis Sanchez netted twice in a 3-0
defeat of Stoke City to take his tally for the
season to 18.
Aston Villa: Villa went goallessfor-January and managed just one
point, a 0-0 home draw with Crystal
Palace on New Years Day. The bleak
run leaves Villa with just three wins from their
last 19 matches in all competitions. Ciaran
Clarks dismissal in a 1-0 loss at Leicester
City was Villas fifth red card this season; the
club has been hit with a 60,000 fine and
warned by the FA three times.
Burnley: In three January league
games the Clarets smashed home
seven goals and conceded the
same number. They jumped out to
a 2-0 lead at home with goals by Ben Mee and
Danny Ings in the first 16 minutes but then
collapsed in 3-2 loss to Crystal Palace. Scott
Arfield and Ings scored in a 2-1 home defeat
of Queens Park Rangers. George Boyds goal
in the 86th minute capped a remarkable game
of comebacks thrice Burnley rallied from a
goal down and Ings also netted to earn a
3-3 tie at Newcastle.
Chelsea: Oscar and Diego
Costa each hit two goals in a 5-0
pulverizing of Swansea City and
they each netted once in a 2-0 defeat of Newcastle United in which Peter Cech,
who got the start due to a hand injury suffered
by Thibaut Courtois, made four saves. They
led 1-0 at Tottenham on Diego Costas early
goal but conceded three before halftime and
despite strikes by Eden Hazard and John
Terry they never caught up in a 5-3 defeat.
Crystal Palace: Gutty onegoal league defeats of Southampton (3-2) and Tottenham (2-1,
away) lifted the Eagles to 13th
place as the mentorship of manager Alan Pardew, named in late December
to replace Neil Warnock, took hold. Dwight
Gayle and Jason Puncheon scored in both
games as Palace rallied to victory. Gayles
first goal in the defeat of Burnley was Palaces
first away goal in 453 minutes and he also
bagged the winner three minutes from time.
Everton: Steven Naismiths
glancing header enabled the
Toffees to take a point from
the defending champions in
a 1-1 draw. He scored four minutes after
Manchester City had taken the lead. Kevin
Mirallas failed to convert a penalty kick in a
0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion that
extended Evertons winless streak to eight
games. Leighton Baines had converted 15 of
his last 16 from the spot but Mirallas took this
one and banged it off the foot of the post. The
New Year started grimly with a fourth straight
defeat, 2-0 at Hull City.
Hull City: The new year began
promisingly, with a 2-0 defeat of
Everton. The Tigers won for only
the second time in their last 13
games with first-half goals 10 minutes apart.
Ahmed Elmohamady headed them in front in
the 33rd minute and shortly before halftime
Abel Hernandez befuddled the Everton
defense to set up a second goal by former
Everton striker Nikica Jelavic. But away

Elizabeth
Yarnold Wins
Skeleton World
Cup Event

ELIZABETH YARNOLD of Britain put together the fastest times in

both runs to win a skeleton World
Cup event January 16.
Yarnold clocked a combined time
of one minute, 44.24 seconds for
her second win of the season. Anja
Huber-Selbach of Germany was
.71 seconds behind in her final race
on her home track. The German is
retiring at the end of the season. It
was her first podium finish of the
season as she struggled to overcome
a back injury.
Maria Orlova of Russia finished
third, .86 seconds behind the winner.
Tina Hermann of Germany
placed sixth to retain the overall
lead halfway through the season.

defeats to West Bromwich Albion (1-0) and

West Ham United (3-0) left them in 18th place.
Leicester City: Paul
Koncheskys goal earned the
Foxes a 1-0 victory over Aston
Villa. Watching from the stands
was Andrej Kramaric, who is arriving on a
club-record transfer (9m/$13.5m) from
Rijeka. Poor finishing kept the game close;
David Nugent missed two fine chances and
shots by Matty James and Marc Albrighton
were thwarted. Danny Simpson gave away a
penalty kick to Liverpool by handling the ball
and another was called against Wes Morgan
when the ball actually hit him in the head,
yet the Foxes rallied for a 2-2 draw. Nugent
scored off the bench and Jeffrey Schlupp
also tallied.
Liverpool: Fabio Borini scored
his first Liverpool goal in almost
two years and Rickie Lamberts
clinched a victory over Aston
Villa. Martin Skrtel also hit the
post. Steven Gerrard converted two penalty
kicks but Liverpool squandered that 2-0 lead
and ended up tied with Leicester City, 2-2.
Lazar Markovic netted his first goal for the
club and it was just enough to subdue a 10man Sunderland, 1-0, at the Stadium of Light.
Manchester City: A 2-0 home
loss to Arsenal, their first defeat
at the Etihad since late August,
ended their unbeaten streak at
14 games. Fernandinhos majestic strike in
the 74th minute was matched by an Everton
equalizer in a 1-1 away draw. Frank Lampard
scored off the bench again; his winner in a
3-2 defeat of Sunderland was his 176th Premier League goal, which places him fourth
on the all-time list. City had squandered a
2-0 lead provided by Yaya Toure and Stevan
Jovetic.
Manchester United: Marouane Fellaini and James Wilson
scored as substitutes to halt
a modest four-game winless
streak in a 2-0 win at Queens Park Rangers.
Felliani came on for the second half and
after a point-blank shot by Radamel Falcao
had been saved he netted his third goal of
the season. David De Gea thwarted QPRs
attempts to equalize and Wilson struck in
stoppage time. United failed to put a shot on
target (eight shots total) in a 1-0 home loss to
Southampton. Falcaos equalizer matched a
shock early goal conceded by United at Stoke
City and the deadlock persisted in a 1-1 draw.
Newcastle United: The Magpies lost, 2-1, at Southampton
despite scoring a fortunate
equalizer. Remy Cabellas deflected through-ball was cleared right into
Yoan Gouffran, who watched in amazement
as the ball bounced off him and looped
into the net. Gouffran then missed a good
chance to put his team ahead and shortly
thereafter Newcastle conceded the winner.
John Carvers first match in charge following
the departure of Alan Pardew was a 3-3 draw
with Burnley in which the Magpies took three
one-goal leads and squandered all of them.
Steven Taylor, Jack Colback, and Moussa
Sissoko were the scorers.
Queens Park Rangers: A
Charlie Austin penalty kick wasnt
sufficient to avert a 2-1 loss at
Burnley that was Rangers recordsetting 10th straight away defeat from the start
of the season. Austin, whose goal had been
the winner when the teams met earlier in the
season at Loftus Road, also banged a shot

off the goalpost. Austin was stopped twice

from point-blank range with the score 1-0 to
Manchester United and QPR conceded again
in stoppage time in a 2-0 defeat.
Southampton: A 2-1 defeat of
Newcastle capped off a memorable month that also featured
defeats of Manchester United and
Arsenal as the Saints strengthened their claims
for a finish in the top four. Eljero Elia, a loanee
from Werder Bremen, scored his first Premier
League goals one in each half. Substitute
Dasan Tadic reacted quickest to a Graziano
Pelle shot had rebounded off the post in an
historic 1-0 win at Old Trafford. Sadio Mane
and Dusan Tadic capitalized on Arsenal errors
to score the goals in a 2-0 triumph.
Stoke City: Bojan Krkics goal
against the run of play gave Stoke
their fourth away victory of the
season, 1-0 at Leicester City. Stoke
jumped in front of Manchester United in the
second minute but could only secure a 1-1
draw. Ryan Shawcross scored against his
former team when Peter Crouch headed
Marko Arnautovics corner kick for him
to knock into the net. Mame Biram Diouf
spurned a great chance and Crouch hit the
post to leave the Potters frustrated.
Sunderland: So far Gus
Poyets magic of last season
hasnt kept his team out of
the danger zone just outside
the bottom three. But the spirit shown at the
Etihad which saw City take the points 3-2
certainly saw a point each being a fair result.
A 1-0 loss to Liverpool, and a 2-1 reverse at
Spurs made for a bad month.
Swansea City: The Swans
needed a West Ham own goal to
take a point off the Hammers at
home in a 1-1 draw. Bafetimbi
Gomis jumped to head a Gylfi Sigurdsson
corner kick across goal and it bounced into
the net off an opponent. Wilfried Bonys goal
in the second minute of stoppage time pulled
Swansea level with QPR after going down to
10 men. Wayne Routledge was dismissed for
over-reacting to a heavy tackle, but Bony a
71st-minute replacement for Sigurdsson
got the point by scoring his ninth goal of the
season, his last for the club, as it turned out.
He went to Manchester City in a 28m deal.
Tottenham: Celebrated the New
Year with an unexpected leathering
of Chelsea at the Lane. It was 4-1 at
half-time as Harry Kane continued
his scoring spree with two. Rose and
a penalty by Townsend followed, all
this after Costa put Chelsea one up. Chadli
for Spurs, and Hazard joined Terry to end a
shock 5-3 defeat for the Blues. A 2-1 defeat
at Palace didnt continue the glow of the
Chelsea win, but a 2-1 against a stubborn
Sunderland brought back smiles, only to be
beaten at home 2-1 by Leicester.
West Bromwich Albion: Manager Tony Pulis first Premier League
game in charge of West Brom saw
the Baggies beat Hull City 1-0.
Saido Berahinos goal earned Albion
just a second win in the last 11 matches. At
Everton the Baggies were unable to land a
shot on target yet emerged with a 0-0 draw.
Ben Foster saved four shots and watched a
penalty kick zip past the post.
West Ham United: The Hammers drilled Hull City, 3-0, with
second-half goals by Andy
Carroll, Morgan Amalfitano, and
Stewart Downing. Carroll tucked
away his fifth goal of the early in the second
half, substitute Amalfitano doubled the lead
by chipping the keeper, and Downing finished
sharply in the 72nd minute. Carroll scored in
a 1-1 draw with Swansea City; Diafra Sakho
hit the net to earn a identical result with
West Brom.

is Luther Burrell aching to get back into the
national side.
Welsh Fly-Half Machine Still Active
Cross the Severn Bridge and youll find
another player who is suffering from the outof-country prejudice Leicesters fly-half,
Owen Williams. The 22-year-old saw off Toby
Flood, the experienced England player and
Tigers previous fly-half who has now gone
to France. Williams has appeared 18 times
this season despite his side signing Freddie
Burns, the England No 10.
In the Welsh side, Williams faces stiff
competition from Ospreys Dan Biggar
who finished the autumn series as Warren
Gatlands first choice after the 12-6 win
over South Africa. Also in the reckoning
are Cardiff Blues Gareth Anscombe, a New
Zealand-born flyhalf who qualifies through his
mother, and team-mate Rhys Patchell. The
latter has been capped but can also play at
fullback or centre so Cardiff are keen to keep
him. One man whose Welsh career seems to
have ended is Rhys Priestland, currently with
the Scarlets but aiming to move to Bath at the
end of the season.

Ben Morgan To Miss Six

Nations

ENGLANDS preparations for the Six Nations

have been severely affected by injury to
first-choice No 8, Ben Morgan. He broke a
leg playing against Saracens in early January and will not return at least till April. The
natural replacement is Billy Vunipola with
ten caps though he has yet to serve the full
eighty minutes since he is considered a high
impact substitute.
Other men whose names are in the frame
are Nick Easter and Steffon Armitage. Easter
is now 36 doing great work for Harlequins
though he has not been summoned by Stuart
Lancaster during his tenure as coach. Armitage is based in Toulon and consequently not
considered for the national side unless there
are exceptional circumstances. He is playing
brilliantly in France so it seems obvious who
should be filling Morgans place.
Danny Cipriani returned from Australia
determined to fight his way back into the
English side. There is no doubt he is a much
more mature lad these days but he seems
unable to get into the top three of Lancasters
list. Now he is seriously considering leaving
Sale and joining the money makers in the
French Top 14.
England look well-placed with their midfield options but there is still no sign whether
Manu Tuilagi will be fit. Brad Barritt is only
just back from a lengthy lay-off while Billy
Twelvetrees has been decidedly out of form
this season. One man who is ready though

Rennie Retires

Ross Rennie, 28, who earned twenty

caps for Scotland playing as a flanker, has
announced his immediate retirement from the
game. The Bristol player, down from Edinburgh a year ago, made thirteen appearances
and scored seven tries. He has not played
since last October suffering a neurological
injury which has now ended his career. He is
yet another example of how tough the modern
game is, even for big, healthy super fit men.
The Scots have announced a four-match
World Cup warm-up with matches on consecutive Saturdays from August 15. They will
play away to Ireland and Italy, then scoot back
up to Murrayfield to play France and return
to Rome for the closing fixture with Italy on
September 5.
